February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: drilling platform, leakage and diffusion, polluted water, remediation strategies, underwater oil spill, VOF
An oil spill accident will cause serious harm to marine ecology and the environment. Rapid response and effective prevention methods are required to minimize the damage of oil spill accidents. The critical problems that marine emergency rescue teams face are when the spilled oil reaches the sea surface, the extent of the spilled oil, and how far they are from the drilling platform. However, there is no reliable model to predict the diffusion distance of spilled oil. Accurately predicting the diffusion characteristics of underwater spilled oil can provide timely and accurate information for the treatment of oil spill accidents and guide the correct implementation of emergency treatment. In this paper, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method was used to establish a two-phase flow model for the diffusion of a submarine oil spill. The volume-of-fluid (VOF) technique was implemented to track the interface between oil−water phases. The effects of different parameters on leakage and dif... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aggregates, asphalt, discrete element method, flights shape, rotary dryer
Thedistribution of aggregates in the cross-section of the drum, in the case of equipment used for the production of asphalt mixtures, essentially influences the performance of rotary dryers. In the research carried out in this article, the optimization of the distribution of particles in the active region of the drum was pursued by modifying the geometric shape of the flights, taking into account at the same time the influence of the technological parameters of operation such as drum rotation speed and drum filling degree. The studies were performed using the discrete element method (DEM), and the obtained results revealedthat flight geometry strongly influences drying efficiency. The efficiency of rectangular double-angled type flights is strongly influenced by the drum rotation speed, especially at high levels of filling degree (20%), with the mass of aggregates exposed to drying increasing by 41.11% when drum rotation speed increases from 10 rpm to 15 rpm. Similarly, hook-type fligh... [more]
Comparative Study on Snowflake Dendrite Solidification Modeling Using a Phase-Field Model and by Cellular Automaton

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: crystal morphology, crystallization process, dynamic simulation, modeling analysis
Dendrite is among the most frequently observed structures during the solidification process. Different dendrite morphologies caused by environmental conditions can affect the physical properties of materials. The formation of snowflakes can generate various morphologies under different conditions, and is used in this work as an example. Simulation technologies provide insight into the correlation between a resulting morphology and its impact parameter, including the phase-field method (PF) and cellular automaton (CA). The PF method is derived from thermodynamic functions and kinetic equations, while the CA model is established by interaction rules between subsystems. It is difficult to solve the PF method due to the coupled differential equations, wherein the actual physical parameters are included. The CA model is conceptually simple and computationally efficient; however, the physical meaning of the parameters is absent. In this work, an example of snowflake formation is considered b... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Discrete Element Method, semi-dry pulping, straw breakage, Tavares model, twin-screw pulping
Rice straw is waste material from agriculture as a renewable biomass resource, but the black liquor produced by straw pulping causes serious pollution problems. The twin-screw pulping machine was designed by Solidworks software and the straw breakage model was created by the Discrete Element Method (DEM). The model of straw particles breakage process in the Twin-screw pulping machine was built by the Tavares model. The simulation results showed that the highest number of broken straw particles was achieved when the twin-screw spiral casing combination was negative-positive-negative-positive and the tooth groove angle arrangement of the negative spiral casing was 45°−30°−15°. The multi-factor simulation showed that the order of influence of each factor on the pulp yield was screw speed > straw moisture content > tooth groove angle. The Box-Behnken experiment showed that when screw speed was 550 r/min, tooth groove angle was 30°, straw moisture content was 65% and pulping yield achieved... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, conjugate heat transfer, data-driven, film cooling, gas turbine
Cooling structures of gas turbine blades have become more complex to achieve a better cooling effect. Therefore, heat transfer analysis tools with higher accuracy and efficiency are required to verify the effectiveness of cooling designs and continuously improve the design. In this work, a data-driven method is combined with a decoupled conjugate heat transfer analysis. The analysis object is a typical air-cooled gas turbine first-stage vane with film cooling, impingement cooling, and pin-fin cooling. In addition, a conventional 3-D conjugate heat transfer simulation of the vane was executed for contrast. Results show that this method shortens the time of the heat transfer analysis process significantly and ensures accuracy. It proves that the data-driven method is effective for the evaluation of a modern gas turbine cooling design and is an improvement compared to the traditional three-dimensional heat transfer analysis method.

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: pore structure, pre-damage, self-healing, superabsorbent polymer
Cracks in concrete structures reduce bearing capacity, durability, and safety. This paper reveals the effect of superabsorbent polymers (SAP) on the self-healing property of pre-damaged concrete based on mechanical properties tests, mercury intrusion porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectrometer. The experimental results show that SAP reduces the mechanical properties of the SAP-modified concrete under the same W/C ratio, but a small amount of SAP can improve the later strength under the 0.35 W/C ratio. The addition of SAP increased the volume of small capillary pores (100 μm) and significantly reduced the former with an increase in age. The SEM-EDS analysis indicates that the water released by SAP promotes the formation of C-S-H gel. AFt in the cracks is the main reason for self-healing, and the addition of CO2 to produce calcium carbonate is another one. Furthermore, this study finds that SAP-modified concrete has the best self-healing effect and the d... [more]
Toward Net-Zero: The Barrier Analysis of Electric Vehicle Adoption and Transition Using ANP and DEMATEL

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: ANP, DEMATEL, electrical vehicle transition, multi-criteria decision making, SDG 12
Global greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced to achieve net-zero carbon emissions. One of the solutions for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is the adoption and transition from conventional vehicles to electrical vehicles (EVs). Previously, most research on EVs have been from a consumer adoption perspective, few of them are from industry transition and consumer adoption perspectives simultaneously. This also highlights the importance of SDG 12 (responsible for consumption and production). Additionally, the analyses were mostly obtained using one methodology and demonstrated only by weighting without relationships among factors. To consider the problem of adoption and transition, a systematic method should be developed. Therefore, this study intends to identify, prioritize, and display the relationship between EV adoption barriers from an automotive industry perspective using an analytic network process (ANP) and the decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL)... Zheng Shu, Yong Qi, Pingya Luo, Tongwang Wang
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: offshore platform, oil repellent polymers, rapid dissolution, super-gravity factor, super-gravity rapid dissolution
The long dissolution time and large dispensed volumes of oil repellent polymers in offshore oil fields lead to a great increase in the volume and number of dissolution and maturation tanks in the polymer formulation system. However, there is limited space and load-bearing capacity at the offshore platform and only a small space is available for the dispensing system. To further optimize the polymer dispensing system and reduce its floor space, the super-gravity technology may be considered as a way to speed up the dissolution of the polymer. The mechanism of super-gravity rapid dissolution was investigated by establishing mathematical models and with indoor experiments. The effects of filler pore size and super-gravity factor on polymer dissolution time and solution viscosity were investigated using the super-gravity rapid dissolution device, then combined with established graded forced stretching devices for field magnification experiments. The results indicated that the super-gravity... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cyanobacterial, pyrolysis, sediment resources, sponge city, water storage materials
Nitrogen, phosphorus, and metals’ pollutants discharged from industrial sources eventually accumulate in lake sediment, hence increasing the difficulty of sediment treatment and disposal. In this work, the water storage ceramsite is prepared from dredged lake sediment and cyano-bacterial powder. The effects of pyrolysis temperature and cyanobacterial sediment on the porosity of ceramsite were investigated. The results showed that the pyrolysis of organic matter and the de-composition of compounds or salts can produce gas, causing a rich pore structure inside the ceramsite. When the temperature increased to 1150 °C, vitrification would collapse the pore structure inside the material. At the cyanobacterial-to-sediment ratio of 3:7, the porosity and water absorption of the material could reach 81.82% and 92.45% when the pyrolysis temperature was 500 and 1050 °C, respectively. The internal macropore structure of ceramsite improved the water absorption performance, and the mesoporous struct... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: activation, capacitive deionization, carbon aerogel, desalination, electro-sorption
In this study, carbon aerogels (CAs) were synthesized by the sol-gel method, using environmentally friendly glucose as a precursor, and then they were further activated with potassium hydroxide (KOH) to obtain activated carbon aerogels (ACAs). After the activation, the electrochemical performance of the ACAs was significantly improved, and the specific capacitance increased from 19.70 F·g−1 to 111.89 F·g−1. Moreover, the ACAs showed a stronger hydrophilicity with the contact angle of 118.54° compared with CAs (69.31°). When used as an electrode for capacitive deionization (CDI), the ACAs had not only a better diffuse electric double layer behavior, but also a lower charge transfer resistance and intrinsic resistance. Thus, the ACA electrode had a faster CDI desalination rate and a higher desalination capacity. The unit adsorption capacity is three times larger than that of the CA electrode. In the desalination experiment of 100 mg·L−1 sodium chloride (NaCl) solution using a CDI device... [more]

Keywords: flow chemistry, neural network algorithm, PLS, reactor design, reactor stability
This paper proposes a milli-reactor design method incorporating reactor runaway criteria. Based on Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulation, neural networks are applied to obtain the optimal reactor structure according to the target reaction requirements. Varma’s theory, the critical Nusselt number for stable operation of the flow reactor, is derived. Keywords: glutaric acid, high sulfur diesel, hydrogen peroxide, malonic acid, oxidative desulfurization, succinic acid
From the perspective of pollution, economics, and product quality, it is very important to find an efficient way to minimize the sulfur content of petroleum products such as gasoline and diesel. In this work, an effective, inexpensive, and simple oxidative desulfurization system based on hydrogen peroxide activation by three dicarboxylic acids which have different carbon numbers (i.e., malonic acid, succinic acid, and glutaric acid) was utilized for the desulfurization of a real diesel sample with high organic sulfur-containing compounds. The desulfurization process was based on the oxidation of sulfur compounds in diesel fuel to the corresponding sulfones followed by acetonitrile extraction of the sulfones. To select the optimal experimental conditions, the effects of several parameters, including temperature, catalyst H2O2 dosages, and treatment time, were investigated. The results showed that the developed system was effective in desulfurizing real diesel fuel with high sulfur conte... [more]

Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: agroindustrial waste, extraction kinetics, phenolic compounds, potato peel, ultrasonic vibrations
As an agroindustrial waste product, potato peels contain valuable phenolic compounds that can be extracted before they are sent to the landfill. Based on previous work, this study focused on determining the efficacies of phenolic compound extraction from potato peels using conventional shaking extraction (CSE) and both direct ultrasound-assisted extraction (DUAE), and indirect ultrasound-assisted extraction (IUAE). The yield curve associated with each extraction method was measured and characterized. The maximum yield of phenolic compounds and its dependence on processing parameters were evaluated. The applicability of the Peleg model for describing the yield curve was evaluated. Based on the Peleg model, a recovery ratio was defined to calculate its corresponding extraction rate. This extraction rate, combined with the yield, can be used for describing the efficacy of an extraction method. Our results indicate that the ultrasound-assisted extraction methods were capable of extracting... [more]

Keywords: acceleration signal, composite modulus of pavement structure, excitation force, excitation frequency, finite element model, jumping
Pavement structure bearing capacity is an important evaluation parameter in pavement design, construction, maintenance management, and reconstruction, and is generally expressed by the pavement deflection value. Some of the current road bearing capacity detection equipment have high detection accuracy, but the detection speed is slow, they cannot achieve real-time continuous detection; and some detection speeds are fast, but the measurement accuracy is easily affected by the pavement roughness and vehicle vibration. Moreover, the detection result is the pavement displacement, which cannot directly reflect the comprehensive modulus of the pavement structure. In this paper, firstly, a two-stage jump mechanical model of “machine-pavement” system is established in order to develop a device that can simulate the real driving load and continuously test the bearing capacity of pavement structure, and the main factors affecting the acceleration response of vibrating drums were determined throu... Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbon nanotubes, dsDNA, electroanalysis, phospholipid nanoparticles, phospholipid nanosystems, screen-printed electrodes
The effect of phospholipid nanoparticles with different contents of phosphatidylcholine (PhNP80 and PhNP100) on dsDNA was studied by means of the electrochemical method. Changes in the electrochemical behavior of heterocyclic bases guanine, adenine and thymine in the range of potentials of 0.2−1.2 V in the presence of PhNPs were used for the assessment of the binding mechanism of the ligand−DNA interaction. Comparative analysis of the effect of PhNPs with different contents of phosphatidylcholine showed a more pronounced effect on the dsDNA of the PhNP100 nanosystem. From the obtained experimental data on the decrease in the amplitude of the nucleobases’ electrochemical oxidation currents, the electrochemical coefficient of the toxic effect was calculated as the ratio of the electrooxidation currents of dsDNA and dsDNA in the presence of phospholipid nanoparticles. PhNP80/100 (up to 11.4 mg/mL) does not influence dsDNA, PhNP80/100 (14.3−28.5 mg/mL) has a moderate toxic effect on dsDNA,... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: barite, barium sulfide, carbothermal reduction, compaction
Barium sulfide is an important intermediate in the manufacture of ceramics, glass, plastics, and pharmaceutical products. This substance is traditionally obtained by carbothermal reduction of barite (barium sulfate) in the presence of a carbon-containing reducing agent, mainly coal. Herein, it is demonstrated that compaction of the charge before the carbothermal reduction significantly enhances the conversion of barium sulfate to sulfide due to an increase in the contact time of carbon monoxide with barite in a compact sample in comparison with a powder sample. In the presence of NaOH as a catalyst, the degree of conversion of barium sulfate in a compact sample was 0.95−0.97 upon roasting at 1150 °C for 65 min, while in a powder sample this value did not exceed 0.6. Furthermore, charge compaction reduced the conversion activation energy (136 vs. 264 kJ mol−1), which could be a tool for reducing the energy intensity of obtaining barium sulfide from its sulfate.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: complex product system, data envelopment analysis, efficiency evaluation, parallel manufacturing, solid waste recycling
Accurate production efficiency evaluation can assist enterprises in adjusting production strategies, improving production efficiency, and, thereby, weakening environmental impacts. However, the current studies on production efficiency evaluation do not accurately consider interactions inside the production system in parallel production processes. Based on the concept of the manufacturing service, this paper describes the production process of a complex product system (CoPS) with a manufacturing service chain. An efficiency calculation model based on the triangular intuitionistic fuzzy number−solid waste recycling−super-efficiency data envelopment analysis (TIFN-SWR-SDEA) is proposed under the consideration of the internal parallel structure of the production system on the example of solid waste recycling. Additionally, the technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) method and the entropy weight method were combined to determine the proportion of solid waste... [more]

Keywords: carbon tax, global warming, Particle Swarm Optimization, power system dispatch
Traditional economic dispatch methods, which are used to minimize fuel costs, have become inadequate because they do not consider the environmental impact of emissions in the optimization process. By taking into account the horizon year load and carbon taxes, this paper examines the operation and dispatch of power units in a power system. The objective function, including the cost of fuels and the cost of carbon taxes, is solved by the modified particle swarm optimization with time-varying acceleration coefficient (MPSO-TVAC) method under operational constraints. Based on different load scenarios, the influences of various carbon taxes for the dispatch of units are simulated and analyzed. The efficiency and ability of the proposed MPSO-TVAC method are demonstrated using a real 345KV system. Simulation results indicate that the average annual CO2 emissions are 0.36 kg/kwh, 0.41 kg/kwh, and 0.44 kg/kwh in 2012, 2017 and 2022, respectively. Subject: Environment
Keywords: adaptive grid environment, binomial crossover, Differential Evolution (DE), multi-objective optimization, mutation
Differential Evolution (DE) has been extensively adopted for multi-objective optimization due to its efficient and straightforward framework. In DE, the mutation operator influences the evolution of the population. In this paper, an adaptive Grid-based Multi-Objective Differential Evolution is proposed to address multi-objective optimization (ad-GrMODE). In ad-GrMODE, an adaptive grid environment is employed to perform a mutation strategy in conjunction with performance indicators. The grid reflects the convergence and diversity performance together but is associated with the user-specified parameter “div”. To solve this problem, we adaptively tune the parameter “div”. Among the DE mutation strategies, “DE/current-to-best/1” is applied extensively in single-objective optimization. This paper extends the application of “DE/current-to-best/1” to multi-objective optimization. In addition, a two-stage environmental selection is adopted in ad-GrMODE, where in the first stage, one-to-one sel... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: 4E decision criteria, COVID-19 pandemic, emergency material distribution, multi-criteria decision
In emergency rescue operations, it is very important for emergency management to arrange emergency materials scientifically and reasonably according to emergency needs. However, the decision criteria for emergency material distribution are often diverse, coupled with the lack of information acquisition due to the suddenness and development complexity of disasters, which makes the scientific decisions about emergency material distribution face great challenges. This paper proposes a multi-criteria decision optimization model of emergency material distribution under uncertainty that combines the 4E criteria of performance evaluation (economic criterion, efficiency criterion, effectiveness criterion and equity criterion). Then, the solution method of the multiple decision criteria model is designed. Finally, a case study of emergency medical material distribution during COVID-19 in China was conducted for model verification. The results show that different decision criteria have an import... Keywords: biosolid fuel, hydrothermal carbonization, laboratory-scale, pilot-scale, solid fuel, waste wood
Increases in energy demand and waste are a major cause of natural resource depletion and environmental pollution, and technology capable of processing waste to convert it into energy is required to mitigate this issue. Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is an example of this technology that can convert waste into energy, and various studies have been conducted using it for fuel conversion. This study focused on the production of a solid fuel equivalent to coal for power generation through HTC processes using waste wood. Unlike previous work, which consists only of laboratory-scale HTC experiments, we confirmed scalability through pilot-scale HTC experiments. Overall, it was possible to convert waste wood into HTC solid fuel with a calorific value of over 27,000 kJ/kg through the pilot plant HTC process. Additionally, heavy metal and hazardous substance analyses proved that it can be used as a biosolid fuel.

Keywords: guide vane, inter-vane flow, numerical simulation, pump-turbine, torsional self-excited vibration
Guide vanes (GVs) are installed between the runner and the stay vanes for flow guidance and discharge regulation in reversible pump-turbines. The unstable torsional self-excited vibration of the guide vane (GV) may occur when running at small guide vane opening angles during the transient operations involving pump flow. In addition, the double-stage radial vanes may induce complex flow in the vanes and influence the stability of torsional self-excited vibration of the guide vane. In this study, numerical simulations were conducted at small guide vane opening angles in pump mode for two different guide vanes based on the three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. The flow regime with a deflection was formed on the trailing edge with a circle in the vaneless region that rotated reversely against the runner rotation when operating at smaller guide vane opening angles for both of the two guide vanes. Based on this, the coupling simulations based on the CFD method with a s... [more]
