April 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bioethanol, high gravity fermentation, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, very high gravity fermentation
Yeasts were isolated from four potential sources, sweet sorghum juice, sugar cane juice, grapes and rambutan. The 27 yeast isolates were tested for their ethanol tolerance (15% v/v of ethanol) and ethanol fermentation performance in a synthetic ethanol production medium (200 g/L of total sugar). Only five isolates, SCJ04KKU, SCJ07KKU, SCJ09KKU, SCJ14KKU and SSJ01KKU could tolerate 15% ethanol and produce ethanol at levels higher than 55 g/L. The ethanol production efficiency from sweet sorghum juice under high gravity (HG, 200 and 240 g/L of total sugar) and very high gravity (VHG, 280 g/L of total sugar) conditions of the five isolates was tested. Saccharomyces cerevisiae NP01 and S. cerevisiae ATCC4132 were used as reference strains. The results showed that the SSJ01KKU isolate gave the highest ethanol production efficiency under all conditions. Ethanol concentration (PE), yield (YP/S) and productivity (QP) values were 98.89 g/L, 0.50 and 1.18 g/L·h, respectively, with sugar consumpt... [more]

April 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: AC–DC combined voltage, creepage discharge, oil–paper insulation, OS-ELM, pattern recognition
The recognition of the creepage discharge development process of oil−paper insulation under AC−DC combined voltage is the basis for fault monitoring and diagnosis of converter transformers; however, only a few related studies are available. In this study, the AC−DC combined voltage with a ratio of 1:1 was used to develop a recognition method for the creepage discharge development process of an oil−paper insulation under a cylinder−plate electrode structure. First, the pulse current method was used to collect the discharge signals in the creepage discharge development process. Then, 24 characteristic parameters were extracted from four types of creepage discharge characteristic spectra after dimensionality reduction. Finally, based on the online sequential extreme learning machine (OS-ELM) algorithm, these characteristic parameters were used to recognize the development stage of the creepage discharge of the oil−paper insulation. The results showed that when the size of the sample train... [more]
Natural Radioactivity in Thermal Waters: A Case Study from Poland
Chau Nguyen Dinh, Jakub Nowak
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: natural radionuclides, radioactivity, recreational bathing, thermal waters, utilisation
A natural radioactivity in thermal water was investigated based on 19 selected thermal waters from Poland. The analysed results show that the radionuclides’ concentrations in the study waters vary over a wide range. The temperature of the waters varies from above 20 °C to above 80 °C. The waters are characterised by different mineralisation, chemical compositions, and belong to different hydrochemical types. There is a good correlation between the water temperature and the depths of the aquifer formations occurrence, suggesting the thermal energy originates from the thermal geogradient. The concentration of radium is well correlated with the water mineralisation. The ratio of radium activity (226Ra/228Ra) in groundwater relates not only the ratio of uranium activity to that of thorium (238U/232Th) in aquifer formation, but also depends on the physical and chemical water properties. Based on the concentration of radon and its transport model, the radiation exposures due to inhalation of... [more]

Zerong Li, Lei Yuan, Guodong Sun, Junchen Lv, Yi Zhang
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: brine, Carbon Dioxide, CO2 geological storage, diffusion coefficient
CO2 diffusion coefficient plays a crucial part in saline aquifers for the CO2 storage and the safety of long-term sequestration. Therefore, it is particularly important to measure the diffusion coefficient accurately. As far as we know, there are currently no CO2 brine diffusion data in real cores under reservoir temperature and pressure conditions. In this paper, a study on the CO2 diffusion coefficient diffused in a brine-saturated Berea core along the radial direction was conducted at temperatures of 313.15 K to 373.15 K and pressures of 8 MPa to 30 MPa. On account of the experimental results, the effect of permeability, NaCl concentration, temperature and pressure on the CO2 diffusivity is analyzed. The results in this study indicate that the diffusion coefficient increases with increasing permeability, pressure and temperature and decreases with increasing NaCl concentration. However, the relationship between pressure and the diffusion coefficient is not linear. As the pressure gr... [more]
Blue-Light Levels Emitted from Portable Electronic Devices Compared to Sunlight

April 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: blue light hazard, electronic device emission, indoor light, sunlight
Over recent years, a technological revolution has taken place in which conventional lighting has been replaced by light emitting diodes (LEDs). Some studies have shown the possibility that blue light from these artificial sources could have deleterious effects on the retina. Considering that people spend a non-negligible time in front of screens from computers and mobile phones, the eyes receive blue light of different intensities depending on the source. Nevertheless, any study about the visual and non-visual effects of blue light must consider precise measurements taken from actual artificial sources. For this reason, we have analyzed the spectral emission of 10 different electronic devices and weighted them according to the hazard caused by blue light to the eyes, comparing the results with solar radiation simulated with a radiative transfer model. The maximum spectral irradiance of the measured electronic devices at 10 cm from the detector was located between 440 nm and 460 nm. The... [more]
Kinematics Measurement and Power Requirements of Fruitflies at Various Flight Speeds
Hao Jie Zhu, Mao Sun
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: forward flight, fruitfly, insect, kinematics, power requirement
Energy expenditure is a critical characteristic in evaluating the flight performance of flying insects. To investigate how the energy cost of small-sized insects varies with flight speed, we measured the detailed wing and body kinematics in the full speed range of fruitflies and computed the aerodynamic forces and power requirements of the flies. As flight speed increases, the body angle decreases and the stroke plane angle increases; the wingbeat frequency only changes slightly; the geometrical angle of attack in the middle upstroke increases; the stroke amplitude first decreases and then increases. The mechanical power of the fruitflies at all flight speeds is dominated by aerodynamic power (inertial power is very small), and the magnitude of aerodynamic power in upstroke increases significantly at high flight speeds due to the increase of the drag and the flapping velocity of the wing. The specific power (power required for flight divided by insect weigh) changes little when the adv... [more]

April 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DC–AC inverter, DC–AC power conversion, fundamental frequency staircase modulation, PWM modulation technique, T-Type inverter, unequal dc voltage supplies
This research proposes a four-level T-type inverter that is suitable for low-power applications. The presented topology outranks other types of inverters in terms of a smaller number of semiconductor devices, absence of passive components such as clamping diodes and flying capacitors, low switching and conduction losses, and high efficiency. The proposed topology is free from voltage deviation and unbalanced voltage occurrences that are present in other multilevel converters having clamping diodes or flying capacitors. The proposed inverter can extend to N levels using unequal dc-link voltage sources for medium-voltage application. The inverter employs the simple fundamental frequency staircase modulation technique. Moreover, this paper presents a current commutation strategy to prevent the occurrences of short circuit and minimizing the number of required switching devices and switching transitions, resulting in improving the efficiency of the inverter. This paper also analyses the th... [more]

April 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: centrifugal, compressor, recirculation, stall, surge, turbomachinery, unstable flows
Unstable flow structures cause inevitable energy losses in all power energy systems, including turbomachines. In this study, a set of analyses was conducted with the use of spectral maps on the pressure signals obtained from an industrial centrifugal compressor. The spectral maps provide one a detailed visualization of the flow conditions present in the machine along the performance curve and to distinguish the flow phenomena present prior to the surge. The method accuracy is especially useful in detecting the inlet recirculation. The study was conducted at four impeller rotational speeds with varying loads imposed by a valve at the outlet. At each speed, the machine experienced different stages of unstable flow conditions prior to the surge. Five main frequency peaks that appeared in all cases were identified and discussed. The surge was observed at all impeller speeds. At lower ones, however, it appeared at higher valve closures. At higher speeds, the surge was much more intense. The... [more]

April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: Al/PTFE, expansion dynamics, fast photography, laser-produced plasma, modified laser-assisted pulsed plasma thruster, three stages expansion process
To study the plasma plume expansion dynamics of nanosecond laser ablating Al/PTFE, the Al/PTFE propellant was prepared by a molding sintering method and the rapid expansion process of the plasma plume was photographed using fast photography technology. The effects of the proportion of Al, laser energy and ambient pressure on plasma plume expansion dynamics are analyzed. The results show that the plume expansion process of laser ablating Al/PTFE plasma can be divided into three stages and this phenomenon has not been reported in the literature. The Al powder doped in PTFE will block part of the laser transmission into the propellant, thus reducing the laser absorption depth of the propellant. In the case of short pulse laser ablation, the reaction rate between Al and PTFE is optimal when the reductant is slightly higher than the oxidant. As the laser energy increases, the light intensity of the plasma becomes stronger, the plasma size becomes larger and the existence time of plasma beco... [more]

Keywords: bit error rate, block bi-diagonalization-based precoding, multiple-input-multiple-output, phase noise, shot noise, thermal noise, visible light communication
Visible Light Communication (VLC) is a promising field in optical wireless communications, which uses the illumination infrastructure for data transmission. The important features of VLC are electromagnetic interference-free, license-free, etc. Additionally, Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) techniques are enabled in the VLC for enhancing the limited modulation bandwidth by its spectral efficiency. The data transmission through the MIMO-VLC system is corrupted by different interferences, namely thermal noise, shot noise and phase noise, which are caused by the traditional fluorescent light. In this paper, an effective precoding technique, namely Block Bi-Diagonalization (BBD), is enabled to mitigate the interference occurring in the indoor MIMO-VLC communications. Besides, a Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) is used to modulate the signal before transmission. Here, the indoor MIMO-VLC system is developed to analyze the communication performance under noise constraints. The perf... [more]
Thermodynamic Features of the Intensive Formation of Hydrocarbon Hydrates
Anatoliy M. Pavlenko
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: gas hydrates, gas pressure, gas temperature, phase transformations
This paper presents the results of a study on the influence of pressure and temperature of the gas−water medium on the process of hydrocarbon gas hydrate formation occurring at the phase interface. Herein, a mathematical model is proposed to determine the optimum ratios of pressure, gas temperatures, water, and gas bubble sizes in the bubbling, gas ejection, or mixing processes. As a result of our work, we determined that gas hydrate in these processes is formed at the gas−water interface, that is, on the boundary surface of gas bubbles. Moreover, there is a gas temperature range where the hydrate formation rate reaches its maximum. These study findings can be used to optimize various technological processes associated with the production of gas hydrates in the industry.

Keywords: Genetic Algorithm, kinetics, liquefied petroleum gas, nickel catalyst, pre-reforming, propane
Pre-reforming of propane was studied over an industrial nickel-chromium catalyst under pressures of 1 and 5 bar, at a low steam to carbon molar ratio of 1, in the temperature range of 220−380 °C and at flow rates of 4000 and 12,000 h−1. It was shown that propane conversion proceeded more efficiently at low pressure (1 atm) and temperatures above 350 °C. A genetic algorithm was applied to search for kinetic parameters better fitting experimental results in such a wide range of experimental conditions. Power law and Langmuir−Hinshelwood kinetics were considered. It was shown that only Langmuir−Hinshelwood type kinetics correctly described the experimental data and could be used to simulate the process of propane pre-reforming and predict propane conversion under the given reaction conditions. The significance of Langmuir−Hinshelwood kinetics increases under high pressure and temperatures below 350 °C.
Defining and Quantifying Intermittency in the Power Sector
Daniel Suchet, Adrien Jeantet, Thomas Elghozi, Zacharie Jehl
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electricity, intermittency, Nuclear, solar, Wind
The lack of a systematic definition of intermittency in the power sector blurs the use of this term in the public debate: the same power source can be described as stable or intermittent, depending on the standpoint of the authors. This work tackles a quantitative definition of intermittency adapted to the power sector, linked to the nature of the source, and not to the current state of the energy mix or the production predictive capacity. A quantitative indicator is devised, discussed and graphically depicted. A case study is illustrated by the analysis of the 2018 production data in France and then developed further to evaluate the impact of two methods often considered to reduce intermittency: aggregation and complementarity between wind and solar productions.

Keywords: anaerobic digestion, hemp, hurds, inflorescences, pretreatment
Industrial hemp stands out as a promising candidate for clean and sustainable biomass-to-bioenergy systems due to its multipurpose, high biomass yield and resource efficiency features. In this study, different hemp biomass residues (HBRs) were evaluated as a potential feedstock for renewable biomethane production through anaerobic digestion (AD). The biochemical methane potential (BMP) of the raw and pretreated fibers, stalks, hurds, leaves and inflorescences was investigated by means of batch anaerobic tests. The highest BMP was obtained with the raw fibers (i.e., 422 ± 20 mL CH4·g VS−1), while hemp hurds (unretted), making up more than half of the whole hemp plant dry weight, showed a lower BMP value of 239 ± 10 mL CH4·g VS−1. The alkali pretreatment of unretted hurds and mechanical grinding of retted hurds effectively enhanced the BMP of both substrates by 15.9%. The mix of leaves and inflorescences and inflorescences alone showed low BMP values (i.e., 118 ± 8 and 26 ± 5 mL CH4·g VS... [more]

Keywords: adaptive driving strategy, bidirectional full-bridge LLC resonant converters, synchronous rectifier
In this study, an adaptive driving method for synchronous rectification in bidirectional full-bridge LLC resonant converters used in railway applications is proposed. The drain to source voltage of the synchronous rectifier is utilized to detect the conduction of the body diode, and a suitable driving signal for synchronous rectification is generated accordingly. The proposed driving scheme is simple and can be realized using a low-cost digital signal processor (DSP). According to the experimental results, which averaged 0.4625% and 1.097%, improvement can be observed under charging and discharging mode, respectively.

Keywords: big data (BD), distributed systems (DS), hadoop, message passing interface (MPI), singular value decomposition (SVD), spark
The problem of analyzing a big amount of user data to determine their preferences and, based on these data, to provide recommendations on new products is important. Depending on the correctness and timeliness of the recommendations, significant profits or losses can be obtained. The task of analyzing data on users of services of companies is carried out in special recommendation systems. However, with a large number of users, the data for processing become very big, which causes complexity in the work of recommendation systems. For efficient data analysis in commercial systems, the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) method can perform intelligent analysis of information. With a large amount of processed information we proposed to use distributed systems. This approach allows reducing time of data processing and recommendations to users. For the experimental study, we implemented the distributed SVD method using Message Passing Interface, Hadoop and Spark technologies and obtained the r... [more]

Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: fatty acids, freshwater microalgae, growth kinetics, heavy metal, Micractinium pusillum, Mucidosphaerium pulchellum, photosynthesis, toxicity
Heavy metals have adverse effects on microalgae metabolism and growth. Photosynthesis and lipid profile are quite sensitive to heavy metal toxicity. The impact of hexavalent chromium—Cr(VI) on photosynthesis and lipid accumulation in Mucidosphaerium pulchellum and Micractinium pusillum exposed to different concentrations (0−500 μg L−1) was investigated for 11 days. A significant (p < 0.05) increase in lipid content was observed with increasing Cr(VI) concentration. However, growth was suppressed at higher concentrations exceeding 100 μg L−1. Addition of Cr(VI) in the cell culture medium showed a negative effect on quantum yield (Fv/Fm), and a photosynthetic inhibition of >65% was noted in both species at 500 μg L−1. However, the lipid gravimetric analysis presented inner cell lipid content up to 36% and 30% of dry weight biomass for M. pulchellum and M. pusillum, respectively. The fatty acids profiles of both microalgae species showed higher levels of hexadecenoic acid as well as ω3... [more]

Keywords: ant algorithm, k-means, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), simulated annealing
With the constant growth of requirements to the quality of infocommunication services, special attention is paid to the management of information transfer in wireless self-organizing networks. The clustering algorithm based on the Motley signal propagation model has been improved, resulting in cluster formation based on the criterion of shortest distance and maximum signal power value. It is shown that the use of the improved clustering algorithm compared to its classical version is more efficient for the route search process. Ant and simulated annealing algorithms are presented to perform route search in a wireless sensor network based on the value of the quality of service parameter. A comprehensive routing method based on finding the global extremum of an ordered random search with node addition/removal is proposed by using the presented ant and simulated annealing algorithms. It is shown that the integration of the proposed clustering and routing solutions can reduce the route sear... [more]

Keywords: drilling fluids, filter-cake removal, fluid loss, formation damage, lost circulation
Industry testing procedures such as ANSI/API 13B-1 describe a method for measuring fluid loss and studying filter-cake formation against a medium of either a filter paper or a porous disc, without giving information about potential formation damage. Considering the thickness of the discs, it may also be possible to extend the method to gain an insight into aspects of formation damage. A new experimental set-up and methodology was created to evaluate changes to the porous discs after HTHP testing to generate insight into signs of formation damage, such as changes in disc mass and permeability. Such measurements were enabled by placing the disc in a cell, which allowed for reverse flow of fluid to lift off the filter-cake. Experiments were conducted with different drilling fluid compositions to evaluate the use of the new methodology. The first test series showed consistent changes in disc mass as a function of the additives applied into the fluid. The data yield insights into how the di... [more]

Keywords: bioethanol, cellulosic sugars, enzymatic hydrolysis, eucalyptus bark, hydrolysate, kraft pulp
The pulp and paper industry faces an emerging challenge for valorising wastes and side-streams generated according to the biorefinery concept. Eucalyptus globulus bark, an abundant industrial residue in the Portuguese pulp and paper sector, has a high potential to be converted into biobased products instead of being burned. This work aimed to evaluate the ethanol production from E. globulus bark previously submitted to kraft pulping through separate hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF) configuration. Fed-batch enzymatic hydrolysis provided a concentrated hydrolysate with 161.6 g·L−1 of cellulosic sugars. S. cerevisiae and Ethanol Red® strains demonstrated a very good fermentation performance, despite a negligible xylose consumption. S. passalidarum, a yeast known for its capability to consume pentoses, was studied in a simultaneous co-culture with Ethanol Red®. However, bioethanol production was not improved. The best fermentation performance was achieved by Ethanol Red®, which provided a... [more]

Keywords: double heterogeneity, PSM, resonance treatment, VHTR
For the resonance treatment of a very high temperature reactors (VHTR) fuel with the double heterogeneity, an extension of the pin-based pointwise energy slowing-down method (PSM) was developed and implemented into DeCART. The proposed method, PSM-double heterogeneity (DH), has an improved spherical unit cell model with an explicit tri-structural isotropic (TRISO) model, a matrix layer, and a moderator for reflecting the moderation effect. The moderator volume was analytically derived using the relation of the Dancoff factor and the mean chord length. In the first step, the pointwise homogenized cross-sections for the compact was obtained after solving the slowing down equation for the spherical unit cell. Then, the shielded cross-section for the homogenized fuel compact was generated using the original PSM. The verification calculations were performed for the fuel pins with various packing fractions, compact sizes, TRISO sizes, and fuel temperatures. Additionally, two fuel block probl... [more]

Keywords: deterministic channel model, diffraction effect, microcell, millimeter wave, three-dimensional ray launching method
Deterministic channel models, such as the three-dimensional (3D) ray launching method, can yield wireless channel parameters. In the non-line-of-sight (NLOS) propagation, the outdoor 3D ray launching method that considers diffraction effects is more accurate than the one that does not. While considering the diffraction effect, obtaining the diffraction point is challenging. This paper proposed a method for determining diffracted rays using the receiving sphere method in 3D ray launching. The diffraction point is determined using the shortest distance method between two straight lines, and the signal loss from the transmitting to receiving antennas is obtained. Furthermore, experiments on a millimeter wave in a microcell scenario were performed. The test results of the wireless channel parameters were compared with theoretical calculations. The results obtained via the 3D ray launching method that only considers the specular reflection and direct rays agree with the experimental results... [more]

Keywords: diffusion flame, laminar flame, magnet–flame interaction, paramagnetic oxygen
The combustion characteristics of laminar biogas premixed and diffusion flames in the presence of upward decreasing magnetic fields have been investigated in this study. The mechanism of magnet−flame interaction in the literature, in which magnetic fields change the behaviors of laminar flames due to the paramagnetic and diamagnetic properties of the constituent gases, is examined and the results are as follows. The magnetic field has no noticeable effect on premixed flames due to low oxygen concentration of the mixed gas at the injection and the relatively high flow momentum. However, due to the diffusion nature of diffusion flames and paramagnetic property of oxygen in ambient air, oxygen distributions are subjected to the gradient of magnetic flux, thus shortening the height of diffusion flames. Results also show that the flame volume is more strongly varied than flame height. Altered oxygen distributions result in improved combustion and higher flame temperature. In the case of cur... April 26, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cloud computing, hedonic factors, perceived risk, user experiences, utilitarian factors
This study provides insights into the initial and post-adoption of cloud computing services by integrating information technology adoption, social influence, trust, security, and information systems quality theories. Social influence, hedonicity, and automaticity are hedonic predictors of user satisfaction with cloud computing services. Perceived risks, trust in the provider, and system quality are utilitarian predictors of user satisfaction with cloud computing services. The Partial Least Squares (PLS) was employed to test eight hypotheses on the causal relationships between the variables. Six out of eight hypotheses were supported. Hedonic factors appear to have more influence than the utilitarian factor of increasing user satisfaction with cloud computing services in the school setting. The findings lead to both theoretical and practical implications for improving the initial and post-adoption of cloud computing services.

Keywords: building retrofit, façade, Mediterranean climate, solar passive technologies
Worldwide, buildings have been presented as one of the main energy consumers and, for that matter, there is an increased tendency to invest in policies and measures that promote more efficient buildings. Among the chosen strategies, the need to promote the use of passive solutions and retrofit the existing building stock is often pointed out. Portuguese building stock has proven to be obsolete in terms of thermal comfort, which can directly affect the energy demand for climatization purposes. Considering the great solar availability in the country, when compared to other European locations, building retrofit with solar passive technologies can be a suitable solution. This paper aims to review studies on the application of solar passive technologies to retrofit façades in the Mediterranean climate context, with a special focus on Portugal. Four retrofit passive solar technologies were reviewed, namely glazing, sun shading, sunspaces and Trombe wall technologies.
