Models of Transverse Vibration in Conveyor Belt—Investigation and Analysis
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: conveyor belt, laboratory and in-service tests of conveyor components, noise emissions, transverse vibrations
The transverse vibration frequency of conveyor belts is an important parameter describing the dynamic characteristics of a belt conveyor. This parameter is most often identified from theoretical relationships, which are derived on the basis of an assumption that the belt is a stationary elastic string. Belt vibrations have a number of analogies to other tension member systems, such as, for example, power transmission belts. Some research findings suggest that in the case of a limited length of the belt section, a more accurate description of its vibration can be obtained with a beam model rather than with a string model. Experimental research has so far mostly revolved around measurements of stationary belts. This article presents the results of vibration measurements performed for a moving belt and obtained for various operating parameters of the conveyor, as well as for several configurations of the distance between idler supports. The analysis was conducted on a moving steel-cord be... [more]

Driving Factors for the Spatiotemporal Heterogeneity in Technical Efficiency of China’s New Energy Industry
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: DEA model, GTWR model, new energy industry, spatiotemporal heterogeneity, technical efficiency
The new energy industry (NEI) is key to achieving a clean and low-carbon economy. Improving its technical efficiency, a factor reflecting the ability of an enterprise or industry to produce maximum economic outputs from a given set of inputs and production technologies, is vital for the healthy development of the NEI. Nevertheless, due to the fragmentation of industry data, it is still difficult to accurately measure the technical efficiency of China’s NEI and understand the driving factors behind it. Based on the panel data derived from 17,457 observations on new energy enterprises in 29 Chinese provinces during 1998 and 2013 (latest data available), this paper uses data envelopment analysis (DEA) and geographically and temporally weighted regression (GTWR) for the first time to investigate the spatiotemporal characteristics and driving factors of the technical efficiency of China’s NEI. The results show that the technical efficiency of China’s NEI was relatively low and increased mod... [more]

Investigation and Improvement of Standard External Lightning Protection System: Industrial Case Study
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Electricity & Electrical Devices
Keywords: ATP/EMTP, grounding system, lightning, lightning protection system, rolling sphere method, surge protective device
In this study, the lightning protection system and grounding system of one plant of the petrochemical industry were investigated, evaluated, and improved. The methods used in this study were rolling sphere and angle protection methods. The grounding system of the building under study was modeled and simulated using ATP/EMTP (Alternative Transient Program/Electromagnetic Transient Program) software. The results show that the external lightning protection system of the prilling tower studied does not adhere to IEC 62305 and IEC 1024-1-1 standards. Moreover, the grounding configuration of the DCS building was not appropriate for protecting sensitive equipment inside. Lightning causes an enormous potential difference between lightning ground rods in the grounding system. Additionally, disabling the existing surge protective device (SPD) causes an increase in the magnitude of Ground Potential Rise at the DCS building. Improvement of the lightning protection system of the prilling tower and... [more]

The Effect of Lighting on Crime Counts
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: crime, lighting, robbery
The influence of lighting on crime was investigated by considering the effect of ambient light level on crimes recorded in three US cities for the ten-year period 2010 to 2019. Crime counts were compared for similar times of day, before and after the biannual clock change, therefore employing an abrupt change of light level but without an obvious intervention such as improving road lighting in an area. The results suggest a significant increase in robbery during darkness, confirming previous studies. The results also suggest darkness leads to an increase in arson and curfew loitering offenses, and to a decrease in disorderly conduct, family offences (non-violent) and prostitution. Future research investigating the effectiveness of improved street lighting should consider that this may not be beneficial for all types of crime.

Shading and Masking of PV Collectors on Horizontal and Sloped Planes Facing South and North—A Comparative Study
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: horizontal and sloped plane PV deployments, masking losses, row masking, row shading, shading losses
With the increase in PV system installations, the available free land and rooftops for these systems may become scarcer, and therefore sloped fields facing the north may be utilized for that purpose. In deployments of PV collectors in multiple rows, either on horizontal or sloped planes, the second and subsequent rows are subject to two effects: shading and masking. Both effects reduce the electric energy generated by the PV systems. Multiple rows of collectors are deployed on horizontal planes and on sloped planes facing south, and literature on the topic has been published. No literature deals analytically with deployments of PV fields on north-facing slopes in the northern hemisphere, to the best of our knowledge. The present study develops explicit analytical expressions for the shadow height and length cast on a collector row by a row in front in multiple-row PV systems installed on slopes facing north. In addition, analytical expressions are developed for row spacing and sky view... [more]

Pandemic of Childhood Myopia. Could New Indoor LED Lighting Be Part of the Solution?
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: circadian lighting, daylighting, dopamine, indoor lighting, myopia
The existence of a growing myopia pandemic is an unquestionable fact for health authorities around the world. Different possible causes have been put forward over the years, such as a possible genetic origin, the current excess of children’s close-up work compared to previous stages in history, insufficient natural light, or a multifactorial cause. Scientists are looking for different possible solutions to alleviate it, such as a reduction of time or a greater distance for children’s work, the use of drugs, optometric correction methods, surgical procedures, and spending more time outdoors. There is a growing number of articles suggesting insufficient natural light as a possible cause of the increasing levels of childhood myopia around the globe. Technological progress in the world of lighting is making it possible to have more monochromatic LED emission peaks, and because of this, it is possible to create spectral distributions of visible light that increasingly resemble natural light... Cascade-Type Pole-Zero Cancellation Output Voltage Regulator for DC/DC Boost Converters
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Electricity & Electrical Devices
Keywords: active damping, DC/DC power converter, output voltage regulator, pole-zero cancellation
This paper presents a novel output voltage regulator in the cascade structure under the consideration of both the parameter and load uncertainties. It leads to the first-order closed-loop inner and outer loop dynamics in the low-pass filter form by the pole-zero cancellation through the active damping injection, which is the main contribution of this study. Moreover, it is proved that the active damping injection level determines the disturbance rejection capability of the closed-loop system. A 3-kW DC/DC boost converter confirms the actual advantages from these two contributions.

This paper presents the concept of one possible but unconventional implementation of a Low Pressure Tube Transport (LPTT) system for a network with station-to-station distances of 300 km, based on the use of circular tunnels in which modular vehicles consisting of three interconnected functional segments move on wheels with airless tires. The physical limitations associated with high-speed vehicle travel in tunnels are presented. The reasons for the expected inconvenience in the travel system, compensated by short travel times, are justified. Assumptions for the use of locomotion, safety, and passenger segments in the construction of a vacuum modular vehicle are presented, as well as systems to ensure the efficient conversion of serial traffic in tunnels to parallel traffic in station areas. Schemes of station construction and traffic organization in the station area are presented, as well as assumptions for a number of systems increasing the safety of vehicle traffic used in emergency... Flow Pattern and Resistance Characteristics of Gas−Liquid Two-Phase Flow with Foam under Low Gas−Liquid Flow Rate
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Monitoring
Keywords: flow pattern, gas–liquid flow rate, resistance
To reduce the cost of arranging air foam flooding equipment at each wellhead, a method of establishing centralized air foam flooding injection stations is proposed. The flow pattern and resistance characteristics of air foam flooding mixtures in different initial conditions are studied. Experimental results indicate that the probability density function of stratified flow is obtained by comparing stainless steel and transparent pipes. If the gas−liquid ratio is kept constant, then the shape of the probability density function remains unchanged in both stainless steel and transparent tubes. Meanwhile, the flow pattern under the gas−liquid ratio is determined by comparing the image recognition results with the probability density function, and a formula for calculating the resistance and pressure drop of the gas and liquid two-phase flow in the horizontal and upward pipes is established. Compared with the experiments, the error results of the calculation are small. Thus, the proposed equ... [more]

Effect of Floating Metallic Particles in Pre-Breakdown and Breakdown Characteristics of Oil Transformer under DC Voltage
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Electricity & Electrical Devices
Keywords: corona inception, electric field, floating metal particle, oil insulation breakdown
Contaminants in transformer oil insulation can float when meeting several conditions. Then, the presence of floating contaminants affects the electrical characteristics of oil insulation. Therefore, the pre-breakdown (corona) and breakdown characteristics due to metallic floating particles in transformer oil insulation would be investigated. This test used DC high voltage stress. A 56 Ω resistor was connected to the oscilloscope to detect the corona currents. The camera was used to capture the images of corona light emission. In addition, the electric field between the electrode and particles was simulated. The variables were the particle size, including its shape, and the distance between the particles and the grounded electrode. The experimental results show that the average value of corona inception and breakdown was inversely proportional to the size of floating particles. The peak value of corona current was directly proportional to the particle size. The lowest breakdown voltage... [more]

Perceived Lighting Uniformity on Pedestrian Roads: From an Architectural Perspective
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: architectural lighting, exterior lighting, light distribution, lighting, pedestrian, qualitative method, road lighting, street lighting, uniformity, urban space
Lighting uniformity is a key factor in traffic safety, and it could even result in energy savings for light installations. However, highly uniform horizontal road lighting for motorized vehicles may not be optimal for pedestrian roads. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the way in which pedestrians experience road lighting uniformity. Accordingly, we employed a qualitative approach to examine pedestrian road lighting uniformity. Visual analyses were used to exemplify and discuss the perceived uniformity. The case studies were performed on three pedestrian roads with similar light installations. The results show that the experience of road lighting uniformity differs substantially between the three roads. Based on the case studies, there are many aspects that need to be considered beyond the light falling on the horizontal surfaces. This study suggests that the visual experience of road lighting uniformity for pedestrians is difficult to estimate with photometric values because the... [more]

Financial Development, Financial Inclusion and Primary Energy Use: Evidence from the European Union Transition Economies
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: bootstrap Granger causality test, financial development, financial institutions access, Lagrange multiplier bootstrap cointegration test, primary energy use
The main objective of the research is to analyze the impact of financial sector development indicators and financial institutions access on primary energy use based on a sample of European Union transition members over 20 years period (1996−2017) through panel cointegration and causality tests that allow for cross-section dependence. The causality analysis revealed that the direction of the causality among financial development indicators, financial institutions access, and primary energy use varied among the countries. On the other side, panel cointegration coefficients disclosed that the financial development index positively affected the primary energy use, but private credit did not have a significant effect on the primary energy use. Furthermore, financial institutions’ access had a significant negative impact on primary energy use. However, country-level cointegration coefficients indicated that the financial development index positively affected the primary energy use in Bulgari... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: Absorption, benzene, dichloromethane, ionic liquids, volatile organic compound
A novel complex absorbent composed of polyethylene glycol 200 (PEG200) and ionic liquids (ILs) was prepared for the absorption of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as dichloromethane (DCM) and benzene. We prepared complex absorbents composed of [EMIM][Cl], [BMIM][Cl], [HMIM][Cl], [BMIM][BF4], [BMIM][PF6], [BMIM][NTF2], and PEG200, respectively, and studied the absorption properties of these six complex absorbents for DCM and benzene. The results show that under the optimized situation, the absorptivity of [HMIM][Cl]−PEG200 complex absorbent for DCM is 85.46% in the first 5 min, and 87.15% for benzene. No obvious decay in the absorptivity of [HMIM][Cl]−PEG200 for DCM and benzene was observed in five cycles, indicating an impressive regeneration performance. Furthermore, the mechanism of ionic liquid absorption for VOC is explored by thermodynamic analysis and quantum chemical calculations. The theoretical calculation results show that the [HMIM][Cl]−DCM interaction is stronger than... [more]

A Methodology for Evaluating Driving Styles in Various Road Conditions
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: aggressive driving, driver behavior, driving profile, road safety
For many institutions, it is important to evaluate a given driving technique as safe or unsafe based on measurable vehicle movement parameters. The paper constitutes a part of studies aimed at establishing a method of parameter-based evaluation of drivers in various road conditions, in other words, to create a so-called ‘driver profile’. The tests were carried out on a 650 km route, on four varying road types. Longitudinal and lateral acceleration values are used to evaluate the driving style. An analysis is presented of the impact of the type and shape of road on acceleration values. The results demonstrate that the same driver, when driving the same vehicle on an expressway, an inter-urban road or in urban traffic, will move with various acceleration values. A detailed analysis of acceleration values and distributions was conducted. Interesting conclusions were drawn after excluding the so-called ‘smooth driving’ sections, by acceleration ranges of −0.5 to 0.5 m/s2 from the analysis.... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: efficiency, flow dividers, hydrostatic drivetrains
The efficiency of a skid-steer, all-wheel drive, multiple-axle vehicle with a hydrostatic drivetrain equipped with low-speed motors when it operates on soft terrain was studied. A flow divider enables a single pump to simultaneously power more than one motor circuit with different pressures in each. It prevents kinematic discrepancy and improves vehicle mobility. There are two types of flow divider: spool type and gear type, where each type has its own set of performance characteristics, such as flow range, pressure drop, accuracy and application parameters. In the present work, the influence of the characteristics of both types of flow divider on overall vehicle driveline efficacy is described.

Such a definition is established and theoretically justified by the theory of electromagnetic fields. This article uses the methodology of this theory, in particular, a method for power balance estimation in electromagnetic fields based on Maxwell’s equations, as well as methods for the analysis of running and standing electromagnetic waves based on the theory of reflection, propagation and transmission of plane harmonic waves. The research considers the regularities of standing electromagnetic waves in the space of inter-substation zones of electric traction systems, which occur due to the incomplete reflection of incident waves from the contact wire and metal parts of the... Promoting Effect of Ultra-Fine Bubbles on CO2 Hydrate Formation
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, induction time, memory effect, nanobubble
When gas hydrates dissociate into gas and liquid water, many gas bubbles form in the water. The large bubbles disappear after several minutes due to their buoyancy, while a large number of small bubbles (particularly sub-micron-order bubbles known as ultra-fine bubbles (UFBs)) remain in the water for a long time. In our previous studies, we demonstrated that the existence of UFBs is a major factor promoting gas hydrate formation. We then extended our research on this issue to carbon dioxide (CO2) as it forms structure-I hydrates, similar to methane and ethane hydrates explored in previous studies; however, CO2 saturated solutions present severe conditions for the survival of UFBs. The distribution measurements of CO2 UFBs revealed that their average size was larger and number density was smaller than those of other hydrocarbon UFBs. Despite these conditions, the CO2 hydrate formation tests confirmed that CO2 UFBs played important roles in the expression of the promoting effect. The ana... [more]

Keywords: ground electrodes, ground resistance values, surge arrester, v-i characteristics
This paper presents impulse tests results on a zinc oxide (ZnO) surge arrester connected to four ground electrodes, with its resistance values ranging from 17 Ω to 104 Ω. It has been noted that when in series with various ground resistance values, the voltage−current characteristics of the zinc oxide (ZnO) surge arrester are far from the one tested using a common grounding, which is a standard measurement method described in IEC 60060-1. This paper clarifies the relationship between the surge arrester with various ground electrodes and its performance when tested with a common practice, based on IEC 60060-1. The tests carried out on a 15 kV ZnO surge arrester, under high-impulse conditions by field measurements, provide important information on the characteristics and ability of the surge arrester to adequately function in various ground electrodes.
