A Data-Mining Approach for Wind Turbine Fault Detection Based on SCADA Data Analysis Using Artificial Neural Networks
Annalisa Santolamazza, Daniele Dadi, Vito Introna.
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: artificial neural networks, condition monitoring, Fault Detection, gearbox, generator, predictive maintenance, wind turbine.
Wind energy has shown significant growth in terms of installed power in the last decade. However, one of the most critical problems for a wind farm is represented by Operation and Maintenance (O&M) costs, which can represent 20−30% of the total costs related to power generation. Various monitoring methodologies targeted to the identification of faults, such as vibration analysis or analysis of oils, are often used. However, they have the main disadvantage of involving additional costs as they usually entail the installation of other sensors to provide real-time control of the system. In this paper, we propose a methodology based on machine learning techniques using data from SCADA systems (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition). Since these systems are generally already implemented on most wind turbines, they provide a large amount of data without requiring extra sensors. In particular, we developed models using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to characterize the behavior of some o... [more]
Participatory Impetus for and Forms of Citizens’ Co-Owned Power Plants: Cases from Higashi-Ohmi, Japan
Hui-Tzu Huang, Rüdiger Glaser.
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: co-owned power plant, energy transition, participation, regional currency.
Citizen-led local participation is considered the key to a successful energy transition, and citizens’ co-owned power plants are an alternative and representative form of local participation. The extent to which citizens’ co-owned power plants can embody “locality, democracy, participation, energy autonomy, poverty reduction, and energy justice” has led to many controversial discussions. In response to these meaningful questions, this study argues for the focus to return to the impetus and driving forces of local participation in energy. This study proposes six possibilities for the impetus of local energy participation and the types of participation they may create. In the case analysis of the Higashi-Ohmi Model, in addition to the compound disaster of the 11 March 2011 earthquake and the transformation of the Japanese power grid, the driving factors depend on the self-consciousness of local promoters who insist on independence from policy influence. By linking local networks to discu... [more]
Fast Pyrolysis of Cellulose by Infrared Heating
Takashi Nomura, Hinano Mizuno, Eiji Minami, Haruo Kawamoto.
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cellulose, fast pyrolysis, glycolaldehyde, infrared heating, levoglucosan.
The fast pyrolysis of cellulose produces levoglucosan (LG), but secondary pyrolysis reactions tend to reduce the yield. The present study assessed the fast pyrolysis of cellulose by infrared (IR) heating under nitrogen flow. Because the nitrogen was not efficiently heated, gaseous LG was immediately cooled, resulting in a maximum yield of 52.7% under optimized conditions. Slow nitrogen flow and a high IR power level provided a greater gas yield by raising the temperature of the cellulose, and the formation of CO could be used as an indicator of the gasification of LG. Glycolaldehyde (GA) was the major byproduct, and the GA yield remained relatively constant under all conditions. Accordingly, GA was not a secondary product from the LG but was likely produced from the reducing ends of cellulose and other intermediate carbohydrates. The pyrolysis of cellulose proceeded within a narrow region of carbonized material that absorbed IR radiation more efficiently. The bulk of each cellulose sam... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: gas hydrates, ice, kaolinite clay, methane, nonclathrated water, Phase Equilibria, pore water, porous media, thermodynamic calculations.
Natural gas hydrates (primarily methane hydrates) are considered to be an important and promising unconventional source of hydrocarbons. Most natural gas hydrate accumulations exist in pore space and are associated with reservoir rocks. Therefore, gas hydrate studies in porous media are of particular interest, as well as, the phase equilibria of pore hydrates, including the determination of equilibrium pore water content (nonclathrated water). Nonclathrated water is analogous to unfrozen water in permafrost soils and has a significant effect on the properties of hydrate-bearing reservoirs. Nonclathrated water content in hydrate-saturated porous media will depend on many factors: pressure, temperature, gas composition, the mineralization of pore water, etc. In this paper, the study is mostly focused on the effect of hydrate-forming gas pressure on nonclathrated water content in hydrate-bearing soils. To solve this problem, simple thermodynamic equations were proposed which require data... [more]
Evaluation of Wave Energy Location by Using an Integrated MCDM Approach
Chia-Nan Wang, Yih-Tzoo Chen, Chun-Chun Tung.
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: FANP, fuzzy multicriteria decision making, fuzzy theory, multicriteria decision making model, optimization analysis, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, Sustainability, WASPAS, Wave Energy.
In recent years, sudden global energy demand has led to the gradual exhaustion of fossil fuel, the world’s main energy resource. With the negative impact of fossil fuel on the environment, governments and organizations have increased R&D funding on renewable energy resources such as solar and wave energy. Vietnam has a great potential for developing wave energy projects owing to the presence of a long coastline and vast ocean. Choosing an optimal location for wave-based power plant projects is a multicriteria decision that requires understanding the quantitative and qualitative elements for assessing the balance of factors when trying to reach the most accurate result. This study proposes a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) model, fuzzy-analytic hierarchical process (FAHP), and weighted aggregated sum product assessment (WASPAS) in evaluating potential wave energy stations at the Vietnamese coastline. The authors identify all criteria and sub-criteria affecting the wave power plant... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: drying of the transformer, oil-paper insulation, synthetic ester.
This research was carried out during the realization of a project with the aim of developing a method of drying cellulose insulation in power transformers by using synthetic ester. Unfortunately, during the drying process, the ester is systematically contaminated with mineral oil, which reduces its water absorption. Information on the oil concentration in the mixture is needed in two cases: when deciding how to treat the mixture, and during the treatment. The article presents two methods: (1) based on the measurement of the mixture density, and (2) based on the measurement of a capacitor immersed in the mixture. The most important scientific achievement of the work is the proof, by way of experiment, of the existence of a relationship between the concentration of mineral oil and (1) the density of the mixture, and (2) the capacity of the capacitor immersed in it. These relations are presented in the form of equations for which the error calculus showed that the uncertainty of measureme... [more]

Lukasz Macyszyn, Cezary Jedryczka, Adam Myszkowski.
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: magnetic gear, mechanical efficiency, precession gear, transmitted torque analysis.
Gears are common and important components of many types of propulsion systems applied in mechanical engineering. The aim of this paper is to present the mechanical design and performance analysis of a novel two-stage magnetic precession gear (MPG). The main advantage of the proposed design is the ability to obtain higher transmission ratios than other currently known magnetic gear types. A detailed analysis of the performance of the MPG was carried out employing a developed numerical model of the magnetic field in the proposed gear. The MPG model is based on the finite element method (FEM) and allows determining the relations between the torque acting on the main components of the gear, load angles, and air-gap lengths. To validate the developed FEM model, the prototype of an MPG with a 1/144 gear ratio was built and tested. The experiments were also focused on determining the mechanical efficiency as well as the influence of rotational speed and lengths of air gaps on the maximum load... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bulbous bow, calculation of fluid dynamics—CFD, fishing vessels in service, fuel consumption and exhaust gases content, reduction of the vessel’s resistance.
Protection of marine environment and reduction of GHG emissions are currently imperative criterion for ship design. For ships in service, including fishing vessels powered by internal combustion engines, options of retrofitting are sought to reduce their hydrodynamic resistance and fuel consumption. One such possibility is the addition of a simple-shape bulbous bow, which can be installed at low cost to upgrade a fishing vessel. We present an analysis of the effect that the bulbous bow has on fishing vessel resistance across the whole range of speeds at which the entire work cycle of the vessel is carried out. The resistance was calculated using a calculation of fluid dynamics (CFD) method for the actual size of the vessel. We show that it is possible to develop such a bulbous bow for which the resistance of fishing vessel with a bulbous bow is going to be lower than that of an unmodified shape. For the modified shape of the fishing vessel, fuel consumption, amount and composition of e... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Alternative Fuels, aviation fuel, e-fuel, fischer–tropsch, power-to-liquid, power-to-x, renewable fuel, sustainable fuel, synthetic fuel, synthetic kerosene.
Synthetic fuels play an important role in the defossilization of future aviation transport. To reduce the ecological impact of remote airports due to the long-range transportation of kerosene, decentralized on-site production of synthetic paraffinic kerosene is applicable, preferably as a near-drop-in fuel or, alternatively, as a blend. One possible solution for such a production of synthetic kerosene is the power-to-liquid process. We describe the basic development of a simplified plant layout addressing the specific challenges of decentralized kerosene production that differs from most of the current approaches for infrastructural well-connected regions. The decisive influence of the Fischer−Tropsch synthesis on the power-to-liquid (PtL) process is shown by means of a steady-state reactor model, which was developed in Python and serves as a basis for the further development of a modular environment able to represent entire process chains. The reactor model is based on reaction kineti... [more]

Keywords: IoT sensors, Lora parser, LoRaWAN/Sigfox gateway, multi-agent system (MAS), parallel management, smart parking.
Smart Parking is essential for any future smart cities due to the tremendous growth of the car fleet. Such infrastructures require a certain amount of equipment. Indeed, smart parking integrates a lot of actors, to manage the parking its equipment must be managed accordingly. Here, is proposed a distributed architecture to manage them by collecting efficiently their data. Two types of data relating to the parking must be collected: those coming from the deployed equipment in the parking and those coming from the internet due to remote users. Thus, a system of two main servers based on the multi-agent concept is proposed. This system manages the parking platform. The first server is dedicated to the parking equipment data collection (Processing Server−PS). The second server (Processing Web Server−PWS) collects the users’ online data such as reservation, and it is responsible for pricing policies, and receive post-processed data from the Processing Server. The parking equipment integrate... [more]

Mirosław Szyłak-Szydłowski.
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: biostabilization, mechanical biological treatment, odor, olfactometry.
As a result of compounds’ transformation in the waste biostabilization phases, there is an increase in odor nuisance and health problems among people exposed to odorants. Linking the odor concentration to the degree of waste biostabilization may be an important tool for the assessment of individual technological variants of biostabilization. The study aimed to link the odor emissions to the biostabilization degree in individual process variants that differed in the inoculum. The tests were carried out on inoculated windrows on the waste mechanical-bological treatment open site. Odor concentrations were measured during the entire seven-week process of biostabilization (weeks 1−7) and compared with kinetics parameters of organic compounds’ decomposition. The olfactometric tests showed the necessity of using the preparation to reduce the value of odor concentration. Research proved that the decrease of odor concentration values could be useful to indicate the particular phases of biostabi... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: biohydrogen, environmental biotechnology, Fermentation, green energy, liquid food waste, solid food waste.
The constant increase in the amount of food waste accumulating in landfills and discharged into the water reservoirs causes environment pollution and threatens human health. Solid and liquid food wastes include fruit, vegetable, and meat residues, alcohol bard, and sewage from various food enterprises. These products contain high concentrations of biodegradable organic compounds and represent an inexpensive and renewable substrate for the hydrogen fermentation. The goal of the work was to study the efficiency of hydrogen obtaining and decomposition of solid and liquid food waste via fermentation by granular microbial preparation (GMP). The application of GMP improved the efficiency of the dark fermentation of food waste. Hydrogen yields reached 102 L/kg of solid waste and 2.3 L/L of liquid waste. The fermentation resulted in the 91-fold reduction in the weight of the solid waste, while the concentration of organics in the liquid waste decreased 3-fold. Our results demonstrated the pote... Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: analysis of variance, Energy Efficiency, energy poverty, energy supply, financial risk, household, tax.
The purpose of the study is to assess the level of energy supply to the population of the Eastern Europe, Caucasus, and Central Asian (EECCA) countries, taking into account their financial risk and energy efficiency for households as potential socially vulnerable consumers. The research methodology is based on three approaches to determining the energy poverty of the population, as well as the integral index of energy supply to socially vulnerable segments of the population. Based on the results of the three approaches to assessing the level of energy supply to the population of EECCA countries, it has been revealed that its critical indicators are found in Armenia, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Ukraine. The multivariate analysis of variance has revealed that, in all EECCA countries, both financial risk and energy efficiency levels have a significant impact. In Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Russia, financial risk has the greatest impact on the level of energ... [more]

Keywords: auto-rickshaw, backward-facing model, dynamic programming, energy management strategy, forward-facing model, fuel economy, hybrid electric vehicle, multi-objective optimization, rule-based control.
Millions of three-wheelers in large cities of Asia and Africa contribute to the already increasing urban air pollutants. An emerging method to reduce adverse effects of the growing three-wheeler fleet is hybrid-electric technology. The overall efficiency of a hybrid electric vehicle heavily depends on the power management strategy used in controlling the main powertrain components of the vehicle. Recent studies highlight the need for a comprehensive report on developing an easy-to-implement and efficient control strategy for hybrid electric three-wheelers. Thus, in the present study, a design methodology for a rule-based supervisory controller of a pre-transmission parallel hybrid three-wheeler based on an optimal control strategy (i.e., dynamic programming) is proposed. The optimal control problem for minimizing fuel, emissions (i.e., HC, CO and NOx) and gear shift frequency are solved using dynamic programming (DP). Numerical issues of DP are analyzed and trade-offs between optimizin... [more]

Keywords: FEM, flow boiling, heat transfer coefficient, mini-channel, Picard method, time-dependent, Trefftz functions.
The intensification of heat transfer using two-phase boiling flow in mini-channels is widely used to dissipate the high heat fluxes in miniaturized electronic devices. However, the process itself is not fully recognized and still requires experimental studies and developing computation methods appropriate for them. The main aim of this work was the mathematical modeling of time-dependent heat transfer process in FC-72 flow boiling in a mini-channel heat sink with five parallel mini-channels of 1 mm depth. Channels have an asymmetrically heated wall while its outer temperature was measured by infrared thermography. The opposite wall of the mini-channels was transparent, helping to record flow patterns due to a high-speed digital camera. The objective of the numerical calculations was to determine the heat transfer coefficient on the wall-fluid contact surface from the Robin boundary condition. The problem was solved using methods based on the Trefftz-type functions. Three mathematical m... [more]

In Wha Jeong, Tae Hyun Sung.
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dc-link voltage balance, one-cycle control, reactive power compensation, static VAR compensator.
This paper presents a new multilevel one-cycle control (OCC) technique for a five-level diode-clamped multilevel converter (DCMC)-based static VAR compensator (STATCOM). The OCC algorithm in combination with multi-carrier level-shifted PWM control is used in the proposed five-level DCMC-based STATCOM. The automatic dc link voltage balance is simply realized by four voltage compensators presented as the part of the OCC controller. In this paper the OCC principle of a two-level converter-based STATCOM is reviewed and extended to the five-level DCMC-based STATCOM. The proposed multilevel OCC control method of the five-level DCMC-based STATCOM in steady-state and dynamic operation modes is verified by simulation and experimental results.

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: flux distribution, optical modelling, radiation homogenizer, ray tracing simulations, solar furnace optimization.
Solar radiation homogenizers are multi-mirror devices that try to reshape the solar radiation distribution coming from a concentrator, so that, after passing through the homogenizer, the light flux becomes as much evenly distributed as possible. The optical behavior of these multi-reflective devices is complex and still ill-understood. The geometry of the concentrator defines the features of the concentrated flux and then the characteristics of a particular homogenizer must be chosen according to the envisaged use. In this work, we developed and used optical ray-tracing software to investigate how the homogenizer’s optical output is affected by the following homogenizer’s characteristics: (i) Number of reflecting surfaces; (ii) total length; (iii) position (relative to focal plane); and (iv) tilt angle (inclination) of reflecting surfaces. The obtained results provide valuable information for the use of these optical devices and may contribute to the development of more efficient strat... [more]

Keywords: distorted voltage, Finite Set Position, harmonics components, Model Predictive Control, One-Cycle Fourier filter, PLL.
This work introduces a new method for computing the angular position of the voltage of the grid—based on a finite set of angles—in the condition of failures in the distribution systems, as symmetrical and asymmetric voltage sags, unbalance, harmonic distortions, and frequency changes. This method is inspired in the model predictive control finite control set principles. In this way, the proposal employs the One-Cycle Fourier filter (OCF) to estimate the positive sequence of the voltage vector into the stationary αβ-frame. The positive sequence voltages extracted from this filter is then handled by an algorithm that is implemented by a finite position set (FPS) for estimating the phase angle. In this way, the minimized cost function chooses the optimal angular position while using the predicted behavior of the grid voltage vector elements in dq frame. The structure, called One-Cycle Fourier Finite position Set Phase Locked Loop (OCF-FS-PLL), here is a composition of the OCF and the FPS.... [more]

Caiyang Wei, Theo Hofman, Esin Ilhan Caarls.
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: co-design, component sizing, continuously variable transmission, convex programming, electric vehicle, Energy Efficiency, optimal control.
For an electric vehicle (EV) with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), a novel convex programming (CP)-based co-design method is proposed to minimize the total-cost-of-ownership (TCO). The integration of the electric machine (EM) and the CVT is the primary focus. The optimized system with co-design reduces the TCO by around 5.9% compared to a non-optimized CVT-based EV (based on off-the-shelf components) and by around 2% compared to the EV equipped with a single-speed transmission (SST). By taking advantage of the control and design freedom provided by the CVT, the optimal CVT, EM and battery sizes are found to reduce the system cost. It simultaneously finds the optimal CVT speed ratio and air-flow rate of the cooling system reducing the energy consumption. The strength of co-design is highlighted by comparing to a sequential design, and insights into the design of a low-power EV that is energy-efficient and cost-effective for urban driving are provided. April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bankruptcy of the household, decision-making, economics of family, finance, financial energy, financial health, forecasting, insolvency of consumers, Polish households, Taiwanese households.
This paper examines the usefulness of statistical methods in forecasting the financial energy of households. The study’s objective is to create the innovative ratios that combine both financial and demographic information of households and implement them in the forecasting models. To conduct this objective, six forecasting models are developed using three different methods—discriminant analysis, logit analysis, and decision trees separately for households in Poland and Taiwan. Such a research approach will answer the question whether the implementation of constructed ratios can increase effectiveness of the forecasting model and its’ versatility between different economic regions. The research relies on four samples of households—two learning samples and two testing samples (one for each country) consisting of 2400 households from both countries. This study is one of the first attempts in the literature globally to develop forecasting models based on ratios constructed with a combinati... [more]

Keywords: automatically controlled pressure regulator, Energy Efficiency, energy savings, flexible production systems, product mix.
During pneumatic control system design, the critical value for choosing the appropriate pneumatic actuator is the weight of the workpiece. In the case of flexible production systems, which are the core part of the Industry 4.0 (I4.0) concept, the weight of the workpieces is often variable, since the crucial feature of this kind of production is its ability to deal with variable parts. Therefore, in order to deal with the variable weight of parts, a pneumatic actuator is chosen according to the heaviest part. However, according to another I4.0 principle, energy efficient operation of machines, the previous criteria for choosing a pneumatic actuator is energy efficient only when handling the heaviest part. In all other cases, operation of the pneumatic actuator is suboptimal in terms of energy efficiency. Aiming to solve this problem, this paper considers the possibility of using a new pressure regulator instead of traditional manually adjusted pressure regulators. This regulator provide... [more]
