Pelletization of Post-Harvest Tobacco Waste and Investigation of Flue Gas Emissions from Pellet Combustion

The paper presents the results of the pelletization (agglomeration) tests of post-harvest tobacco waste as a feedstock for fuel pellet production. The experiment was conducted on a prototype pelleting−briquetting device with a flat matrix. The influence of the tobacco waste moisture content (17, 21 and 25wt.%) and the rotational speed of the agglomerating rolls (120, 170 and 220 rpm) on the power demand and on the pellet’s kinetic durability and density were determined. It was found that the moisture content has a significant impact on the pellet’s density but slightly affects its kinetic durability. The obtained pellets were characterized by a high density above 1000 kg·m−3 and kinetic durability above 97%. In order to examine the exhaust composition, the obtained pellets were combusted in a 25 kW fixed great boiler. High amounts of CO, SOx, NO and HCl were obtained, which suggests that the selection of a different technology for tobacco waste pellet combustion should be made.

Relationships between Dynamic Elastic Moduli in Shale Reservoirs

Sonic log compressional and shear-wave velocities combined with logged bulk density can be used to calculate dynamic elastic moduli in organic shale reservoirs. We use linear multivariate regression to investigate modulus prediction when shear-wave velocities are not available in seven unconventional shale reservoirs. Using only P-wave modulus derived from logged compressional-wave velocity and density as a predictor of dynamic shear modulus in a single bivariate regression equation for all seven shale reservoirs results in prediction standard error of less than 1 GPa. By incorporating compositional variables in addition to P-wave modulus in the regression, the prediction standard error is reduced to less than 0.8 GPa with a single equation for all formations. Study on the Relationship between BO−LID and LeTID in Czochralski-Grown Monocrystalline Silicon

Most research about Light and elevated Temperature Induced Degradation (LeTID) is focused on multicrystalline silicon (mc-Si). In this work, the degradation kinetics of Czochralski-grown monocrystalline silicon (Cz-Si) induced by light at an elevated temperature were studied in detail. The lifetime evolutions over time during (1) light soaking (LS), (2) dark annealing−light soaking (DA−LS), and (3) DA−LS cycling experiments were analyzed. Ratios of the capture coefficients for the electrons and holes (k-values) were used to characterize the possible defects responsible for degradation. We found that the behavior of degradation and recovery under light soaking with or without a dark annealing treatment was mostly like boron−oxygen (BO)-related degradation but gave k-values from 19 to 25. A new methodology of determination of the theoretical and actual working volume of a hydraulic motor based on the characteristics of the delivered flow rate into hydraulic motor vs. the rotational speed at a constant pressure drop in the working chambers is described in this paper. A new method of describing the delivered flow rate into a motor per one shaft revolution as a nonlinear function of the pressure drop in the motor working chamber is proposed. The influence of the flowmeter location in the measurement system on the result of the theoretical and actual working volume calculation is described. It is shown that, in order to assess the energy losses (volumetric and mechanical) in the motor, the actual working volume must be a polynomial function (third degree) of its pressure drop in the working chambers. An Efficient Mine Ventilation Solution Method Based on Minimum Independent Closed Loops

In this paper, according to the analysis of optimum circuits, we present an efficient ventilation network solution based on minimum independent closed loops. Our main contribution is optimizing the circuit dividing strategy to improve the iteration convergence and the efficiency of a single iteration. In contrast to a traditional circuit, a minimum closed loop may contain one or more co-tree branches but fewer high-resistance branches and fan branches. It is helpful in solving the problem of divergence or slow convergence for complex ventilation networks. Moreover, we analyze the dividing rules of closed loops and improve the dividing algorithm of minimum independent closed loops. In this study, four ammonium hydroxide ionic liquids (AHILs) with varying alkyl chains were evaluated for their kinetic hydrate inhibition (KHI) impact on pure carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) gas hydrate systems. The constant cooling technique was used to determine the induction time, the initial rate of hydrate formation, and the amount of gas uptake for CH4-AHILs and CO2-AHILs systems at 8.0 and 3.50 MPa, respectively, at 1 wt.% aqueous AHILs solutions. Aware of the difficulties in combating non-technical losses (NTLs) in Brazil, the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) established tolerable limits for the percentage of non-technical losses to each Brazilian distribution utility. The prestrike phenomenon in vacuum circuit breakers (VCBs) is interesting but complicated. Previous studies mainly focus on the prestrike phenomenon in single-break VCBs. However, experimental work on prestrike characteristics of double-break VCBs cannot be found in literature. This paper aims to experimentally determine the probabilistic characteristics of prestrike gaps in a double-break VCB consisting of two commercial vacuum interrupters (VIs) in series under direct current (DC) voltages. As a benchmark, single-break prestrike gaps were measured by short-circuiting one of the VIs in a double break. This paper deals with the problem of inserting a temperature sensor in the neighbourhood of a chip to monitor the junction temperature. If the sensor is not in the middle of the heat source, the recorded temperature can be quite different from the chip temperature we are mainly interested in. For the steady state temperature, it is rather easy to introduce a correction factor. For the transient behaviour of the temperature, there is a tremendous difference between the chip and the sensor temperature, which cannot be neglected if the temperature is used as a parameter to change, for example, the clock frequency in order to improve the throughput.

Influence of the Fuel/Oxidant Ratio on the Elaboration of Binary Oxide Catalyst by a Microwave-Assisted Solution Combustion Method

Three series of binary metal oxide catalysts containing Ni, Cu, or Co oxides were prepared, fully characterized and tested in CO oxidation. The catalysts, with a constant transition metal loading of 10 wt%, were prepared from metal nitrates and urea mixtures by a microwave-assisted solution combustion method. Biocrude Production from Wheat Straw at Sub and Supercritical Hydrothermal Liquefaction

In this study, hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of wheat straw (WS) in sub (350 °C) and supercritical (400 °C) water with and without alkali catalyst was performed to investigate the potential of WS for the production of biocrude. The influences of temperature and catalyst were studied for the HTL products. Results showed that maximum biocrude yield (32.34 wt. %) with least solid residue (4.34 wt. %) was obtained at subcritical catalytic condition, whereas the carbon content was slightly higher in biocrude at supercritical. The higher heating value (HHV) for biocrude is around 35 MJ/kg for all four conditions. The major compounds in biocrude were observed as ketones, alcohols, acids, and hydrocarbons. Enhancing Performance of a Piezoelectric Energy Harvester System for Concurrent Flutter and Vortex-Induced Vibration

This paper proposes a novel and efficient energy harvester (EH) system, for capturing simultaneously flutter and vortex-induced vibration. There exists a coupling effect between flexible spring energy harvester (FSEH) and cantilever beam energy harvester (CBEH) in aerodynamic response and output characteristic. Many prototypes of the harvester were manufactured to explore the coupling effect in a wind tunnel. The experimental results demonstrate that FSEH is mainly subjected to flutter-induced vibration and CBEH undergoes vortex-induced vibration. Disturbance of FSEH first takes place, a limited oscillation cycle then occurs, and chaos ultimately happens as airflow velocity increase. This article presents the effectiveness of bispectrum analysis for the detection of the rotor unbalance of an induction motor supplied by the mains and a frequency converter. Two diagnostic signals were analyzed, as well as the stator current and mechanical vibrations of the tested motors. The experimental tests were realized for two low-power induction motors, with one and two pole pairs, respectively. Impact of Pretreatment on Hydrothermally Carbonized Spruce

Upgrading biomass waste streams can improve economics in wood industries by adding value to the process. This work considers use of a hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) process for the residual feedstock after lignin and hemicelluloses extraction. Batch experiments were performed at 200−240 °C temperatures and three hours residence time with an 8:1 biomass to water ratio for two feedstocks: Raw spruce and spruce after lignin extraction. The proximate analysis and heating value showed similar results for both feedstocks, indicating that the thermochemical conversion is not impacted by the removal of lignin and hemicelluloses; the pretreatment processing slightly increases the heating value of the treated feedstock, but the HTC conversion process produces a consistent upgrading trend for both the treated and untreated feedstocks. Preferences for Nuclear Power in Post-Fukushima Japan: Evidence from a Large Nationwide Household Survey

Utilizing the data of a large nationwide household survey conducted in 2014, we investigate public preferences on nuclear power in Japan after the Fukushima nuclear accident and the role of four sets of factors: (1) household/individual socioeconomic characteristics, (2) psychological status, (3) geographical aspects, and (4) Fukushima accident-related experiences. The preferred energy mix, according to the averaged responses from the survey, includes 0.59 for renewables, 0.29 for fossil fuels, and 0.12 for nuclear—much more skewed towards the renewables than the actual national share of renewables of less than 0.2. Male, older, unmarried, less educated, high-income people, and government party supporters have a preference towards a higher share of nuclear power, except if they live near nuclear power plants. The experience of blackout and aversion to nuclear power during the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 lowers the share of nuclear power in the preferred mix.

This paper addresses the analysis of the applicability of water as a working fluid for the new adsorptive heat transformation (AHT) cycle "Heat from Cold" (HeCol). The cycle proposed for cold countries operates at the ambient temperature below 0 °C. In this work, an aqueous solution of calcium chloride is proposed instead of liquid water to prevent the ice formation in the evaporator and condenser. The proposed water-based cycle is compared with the common methanol-based HeCol one in terms of the specific useful heat generated per cycle. The effect of the CaCl2 solution on the cycle boundary pressures and its useful heat is studied both theoretically and experimentally. This approach can be extended to other adsorptive heat transformation cycles working at an evaporator or condenser temperature below 0 °C.

Partial Discharge Measurements in a High Voltage Gas Insulated Transmission Line Insulated with CO2

This paper uses practical experimentation to analyse the effect of replacing SF6 with pure CO2 in conventional gas insulated transmission line sections by studying partial discharge measurements taken with applied voltages up to 242 kV (rms). The results can also help in understanding the properties of new alternative gas mixtures which can be utilised with a ratio of up to and over 95% CO2. The experiments undertaken involved filling a gas insulated line demonstrator with 3 bars of CO2 and applying voltages up to 242 kV in both clean conditions and particle-contaminated enclosure conditions. Methane Oxidation Efficiency in Biofiltration Systems with Different Moisture Content Treating Diluted Landfill Gas

This study investigates the influence of moisture content on the potential oxidation efficiency of methane (CH4) of biofiltration systems treating landfill gas containing high oxygen concentrations. Column tests filled with compost with different moisture contents (20%, 30%, and 40%) loaded with different methane flows were set up on a laboratory scale. Power-Efficient Driver Circuit for Piezo Electric Actuator with Passive Charge Recovery

Piezoelectric actuation is a promising principle for insect-scaled robots. A major concern while utilizing a piezoelectric actuator is energy loss due to its parasitic capacitance. In this paper, we propose a new concept to recover the charge stored in the parasitic capacitance; it requires only three additional lightweight passive components: two diodes and a resistor. The advantages of our concept are its small additional mass and simple operating procedure compared with existing charge recovery circuits. We provided a guideline for selecting a resistor using a simplified theoretical model and found that half of the charge can be recovered by employing a resistor that has a resistance sufficiently larger than the forward resistance of the additional diode. Increasing the Sensitivity of the Method of Early Detection of Cyber-Attacks in Telecommunication Networks Based on Traffic Analysis by Extreme Filtering

The paper proposes a method for improving the accuracy of early detection of cyber attacks with a small impact, in which the mathematical expectation is a fraction of the total, and the pulse repetition period is quite long. Early detection of attacks against telecommunication networks is based on traffic analysis using extreme filtering. The algorithm of fuzzy logic for deciding on the results of extreme filtering is suggested. The results of an experimental evaluation of the proposed method are presented. They demonstrate that the method is sensitive even with minor effects. In order to eliminate the redundancy of the analyzed parameters, it is enough to use the standard deviation and the correlation interval for decision making.
