Experimental Determination of CO2 Diffusion Coefficient in a Brine-Saturated Core Simulating Reservoir Condition

CO2 diffusion coefficient plays a crucial part in saline aquifers for the CO2 storage and the safety of long-term sequestration. Therefore, it is particularly important to measure the diffusion coefficient accurately. As far as we know, there are currently no CO2 brine diffusion data in real cores under reservoir temperature and pressure conditions. In this paper, a study on the CO2 diffusion coefficient diffused in a brine-saturated Berea core along the radial direction was conducted at temperatures of 313.15 K to 373.15 K and pressures of 8 MPa to 30 MPa. On account of the experimental results, the effect of permeability, NaCl concentration, temperature and pressure on the CO2 diffusivity is analyzed. The results in this study indicate that the diffusion coefficient increases with increasing permeability, pressure and temperature and decreases with increasing NaCl concentration. Blue-Light Levels Emitted from Portable Electronic Devices Compared to Sunlight

Over recent years, a technological revolution has taken place in which conventional lighting has been replaced by light emitting diodes (LEDs). Some studies have shown the possibility that blue light from these artificial sources could have deleterious effects on the retina. Considering that people spend a non-negligible time in front of screens from computers and mobile phones, the eyes receive blue light of different intensities depending on the source. Nevertheless, any study about the visual and non-visual effects of blue light must consider precise measurements taken from actual artificial sources. Kinematics Measurement and Power Requirements of Fruitflies at Various Flight Speeds

Energy expenditure is a critical characteristic in evaluating the flight performance of flying insects. To investigate how the energy cost of small-sized insects varies with flight speed, we measured the detailed wing and body kinematics in the full speed range of fruitflies and computed the aerodynamic forces and power requirements of the flies. As flight speed increases, the body angle decreases and the stroke plane angle increases; the wingbeat frequency only changes slightly; the geometrical angle of attack in the middle upstroke increases; the stroke amplitude first decreases and then increases. Unstable Flow Structures Present at Different Rotational Velocities of the Centrifugal Compressor

Unstable flow structures cause inevitable energy losses in all power energy systems, including turbomachines. In this study, a set of analyses was conducted with the use of spectral maps on the pressure signals obtained from an industrial centrifugal compressor. The spectral maps provide one a detailed visualization of the flow conditions present in the machine along the performance curve and to distinguish the flow phenomena present prior to the surge. The method accuracy is especially useful in detecting the inlet recirculation. The study was conducted at four impeller rotational speeds with varying loads imposed by a valve at the outlet. A Study on the Plasma Plume Expansion Dynamics of Nanosecond Laser Ablating Al/PTFE

To study the plasma plume expansion dynamics of nanosecond laser ablating Al/PTFE, the Al/PTFE propellant was prepared by a molding sintering method and the rapid expansion process of the plasma plume was photographed using fast photography technology. The effects of the proportion of Al, laser energy and ambient pressure on plasma plume expansion dynamics are analyzed. The results show that the plume expansion process of laser ablating Al/PTFE plasma can be divided into three stages and this phenomenon has not been reported in the literature. The Al powder doped in PTFE will block part of the laser transmission into the propellant, thus reducing the laser absorption depth of the propellant. Thermodynamic Features of the Intensive Formation of Hydrocarbon Hydrates

This paper presents the results of a study on the influence of pressure and temperature of the gas−water medium on the process of hydrocarbon gas hydrate formation occurring at the phase interface. Herein, a mathematical model is proposed to determine the optimum ratios of pressure, gas temperatures, water, and gas bubble sizes in the bubbling, gas ejection, or mixing processes. As a result of our work, we determined that gas hydrate in these processes is formed at the gas−water interface, that is, on the boundary surface of gas bubbles. Moreover, there is a gas temperature range where the hydrate formation rate reaches its maximum. These study findings can be used to optimize various technological processes associated with the production of gas hydrates in the industry.

Propane Pre-Reforming into Methane-Rich Gas over Ni Catalyst: Experiment and Kinetics Elucidation via Genetic Algorithm

Pre-reforming of propane was studied over an industrial nickel-chromium catalyst under pressures of 1 and 5 bar, at a low steam to carbon molar ratio of 1, in the temperature range of 220−380 °C and at flow rates of 4000 and 12,000 h−1. It was shown that propane conversion proceeded more efficiently at low pressure (1 atm) and temperatures above 350 °C. A genetic algorithm was applied to search for kinetic parameters better fitting experimental results in such a wide range of experimental conditions. Power law and Langmuir−Hinshelwood kinetics were considered. It was shown that only Langmuir−Hinshelwood type kinetics correctly described the experimental data and could be used to simulate the process of propane pre-reforming and predict propane conversion under the given reaction conditions. The significance of Langmuir−Hinshelwood kinetics increases under high pressure and temperatures below 350 °C.

Defining and Quantifying Intermittency in the Power Sector

The lack of a systematic definition of intermittency in the power sector blurs the use of this term in the public debate: the same power source can be described as stable or intermittent, depending on the standpoint of the authors. This work tackles a quantitative definition of intermittency adapted to the power sector, linked to the nature of the source, and not to the current state of the energy mix or the production predictive capacity. A quantitative indicator is devised, discussed and graphically depicted. A case study is illustrated by the analysis of the 2018 production data in France and then developed further to evaluate the impact of two methods often considered to reduce intermittency: aggregation and complementarity between wind and solar productions.

Exploring the Biomethane Potential of Different Industrial Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) Biomass Residues

Industrial hemp stands out as a promising candidate for clean and sustainable biomass-to-bioenergy systems due to its multipurpose, high biomass yield and resource efficiency features. In this study, different hemp biomass residues (HBRs) were evaluated as a potential feedstock for renewable biomethane production through anaerobic digestion (AD). The biochemical methane potential (BMP) of the raw and pretreated fibers, stalks, hurds, leaves and inflorescences was investigated by means of batch anaerobic tests. The highest BMP was obtained with the raw fibers (i.e., 422 ± 20 mL CH4·g VS−1), while hemp hurds (unretted), making up more than half of the whole hemp plant dry weight, showed a lower BMP value of 239 ± 10 mL CH4·g VS−1. The alkali pretreatment of unretted hurds and mechanical grinding of retted hurds effectively enhanced the BMP of both substrates by 15.9%. In this study, an adaptive driving method for synchronous rectification in bidirectional full-bridge LLC resonant converters used in railway applications is proposed. The drain to source voltage of the synchronous rectifier is utilized to detect the conduction of the body diode, and a suitable driving signal for synchronous rectification is generated accordingly. The proposed driving scheme is simple and can be realized using a low-cost digital signal processor (DSP). The Effect of Chromium on Photosynthesis and Lipid Accumulation in Two Chlorophyte Microalgae

Heavy metals have adverse effects on microalgae metabolism and growth. Photosynthesis and lipid profile are quite sensitive to heavy metal toxicity. The impact of hexavalent chromium—Cr(VI) on photosynthesis and lipid accumulation in Mucidosphaerium pulchellum and Micractinium pusillum exposed to different concentrations (0−500 μg L−1) was investigated for 11 days. A significant (p < 0.05) increase in lipid content was observed with increasing Cr(VI) concentration. However, growth was suppressed at higher concentrations exceeding 100 μg L−1. The Fundamental Principles and Standard Evaluation for Fluid Loss and Possible Extensions of Test Methodology to Assess Consequences for Formation Damage

Combustion Characteristics of Small Laminar Flames in an Upward Decreasing Magnetic Field

The combustion characteristics of laminar biogas premixed and diffusion flames in the presence of upward decreasing magnetic fields have been investigated in this study. The mechanism of magnet−flame interaction in the literature, in which magnetic fields change the behaviors of laminar flames due to the paramagnetic and diamagnetic properties of the constituent gases, is examined and the results are as follows. The magnetic field has no noticeable effect on premixed flames due to low oxygen concentration of the mixed gas at the injection and the relatively high flow momentum. However, due to the diffusion nature of diffusion flames and paramagnetic property of oxygen in ambient air, oxygen distributions are subjected to the gradient of magnetic flux, thus shortening the height of diffusion flames. Enhancing User Experiences with Cloud Computing via Improving Utilitarian and Hedonic Factors

This study provides insights into the initial and post-adoption of cloud computing services by integrating information technology adoption, social influence, trust, security, and information systems quality theories. Social influence, hedonicity, and automaticity are hedonic predictors of user satisfaction with cloud computing services. Perceived risks, trust in the provider, and system quality are utilitarian predictors of user satisfaction with cloud computing services. The Partial Least Squares (PLS) was employed to test eight hypotheses on the causal relationships between the variables. Six out of eight hypotheses were supported. Hedonic factors appear to have more influence than the utilitarian factor of increasing user satisfaction with cloud computing services in the school setting. The findings lead to both theoretical and practical implications for improving the initial and post-adoption of cloud computing services.

Building Façade Retrofit with Solar Passive Technologies: A Literature Review

Portuguese building stock has proven to be obsolete in terms of thermal comfort, which can directly affect the energy demand for climatization purposes. Considering the great solar availability in the country, when compared to other European locations, building retrofit with solar passive technologies can be a suitable solution. This paper aims to review studies on the application of solar passive technologies to retrofit façades in the Mediterranean climate context, with a special focus on Portugal. A Review of Heat Recovery in Ventilation

The purpose of the article was to present information on heat recovery in ventilation systems and to highlight what has not been sufficiently researched in this regard. A lot of information can be found on methods and exchangers for heat recovery in centralized systems. Decentralized, façade systems for cyclical supply and exhaust air have not been sufficiently researched. It is known that these devices are sensitive to the influence of wind and temperature, hence heat recovery may be ineffective in their case. The literature describes the aspect of heat recovery depending on the location in climatic zones, depending on the number of degree days (HDD). Attention was also paid to the risk of freezing of heat recovery exchangers. The literature review also showed the lack of a universal method for assessing heat recovery exchangers and the method of their selection depending on the climate.

The Impact of Oil Price Shocks on National Income: Evidence from Azerbaijan

This study investigates the influence of oil price shocks on GDP per capita, exchange rate, and total trade turnover in Azerbaijan using the Structural Vector Autoregressive (SVAR) method to data collected from 1992 to 2019. The estimation results of the SVAR method conclude that oil price shocks (rise in oil prices) affect GDP per capita and total trade turnover positively, whereas its influence on the exchange rate is negative in the case of Azerbaijan. According to results of this study, Azerbaijan and similar oil-exporting countries should reduce the dependence of GDP per capita, the exchange rate, and total trade turnover from oil resources and its prices in the global market. Therefore, these countries should attempt to the diversification of GDP per capita, the exchange rate, and other sources of total trade turnover.

A flow−particle interaction solver was developed in this study. For the basic flow solver, an improved divergence-free-condition compensated coupled (IDFC2) framework was employed to predict the velocity and pressure field. In order to model the effect of solid particles, the differentially interpolated direct forcing immersed boundary (DIIB) method was incorporated with the IDFC2 framework, while the equation of motion was solved to predict the displacement, rotation and velocity of the particle. The hydrodynamic force and torque which appeared in the equations of motion were directly evaluated by fluid velocity and pressure, so as to eliminate the instability problem of the density ratio close to 1. In order to effectively evaluate the drag/lift forces acting on the particle, an interpolated kernel function was introduced. The present results will be compared with the benchmark solutions to validate the present flow−particle interaction solver.
