The Effect of Lighting on Crime Counts

The influence of lighting on crime was investigated by considering the effect of ambient light level on crimes recorded in three US cities for the ten-year period 2010 to 2019. Crime counts were compared for similar times of day, before and after the biannual clock change, therefore employing an abrupt change of light level but without an obvious intervention such as improving road lighting in an area. The results suggest a significant increase in robbery during darkness, confirming previous studies. The results also suggest darkness leads to an increase in arson and curfew loitering offenses, and to a decrease in disorderly conduct, family offences (non-violent) and prostitution. Future research investigating the effectiveness of improved street lighting should consider that this may not be beneficial for all types of crime.

A Review of Reduction Methods of Impact of Common-Mode Voltage on Electric Drives

In this survey paper, typical solutions that focus on the reduction in negative effects resulting from the common-mode voltage influence in AC motor drive applications are re-examined. The critical effectiveness evaluation of the considered methods is based on experimental results of tests performed in a laboratory setup with an induction machine fed by an inverter. The capacity of a common-mode voltage level reduction and voltage gradient du/dt limitation is discussed to extend motor bearings’ lifetime and increase motor windings’ safety. The characteristic features of the described solutions are compared and demonstrated using laboratory results.

Shading and Masking of PV Collectors on Horizontal and Sloped Planes Facing South and North—A Comparative Study

Cascade-Type Pole-Zero Cancellation Output Voltage Regulator for DC/DC Boost Converters

This paper presents a novel output voltage regulator in the cascade structure under the consideration of both the parameter and load uncertainties. It leads to the first-order closed-loop inner and outer loop dynamics in the low-pass filter form by the pole-zero cancellation through the active damping injection, which is the main contribution of this study. Moreover, it is proved that the active damping injection level determines the disturbance rejection capability of the closed-loop system. To reduce the cost of arranging air foam flooding equipment at each wellhead, a method of establishing centralized air foam flooding injection stations is proposed. The flow pattern and resistance characteristics of air foam flooding mixtures in different initial conditions are studied. Experimental results indicate that the probability density function of stratified flow is obtained by comparing stainless steel and transparent pipes. If the gas−liquid ratio is kept constant, then the shape of the probability density function remains unchanged in both stainless steel and transparent tubes. Financial Development, Financial Inclusion and Primary Energy Use: Evidence from the European Union Transition Economies

The Absorption Performance of Ionic Liquids−PEG200 Complex Absorbent for VOCs

A novel complex absorbent composed of polyethylene glycol 200 (PEG200) and ionic liquids (ILs) was prepared for the absorption of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as dichloromethane (DCM) and benzene. We prepared complex absorbents composed of [EMIM][Cl], [BMIM][Cl], [HMIM][Cl], [BMIM][BF4], [BMIM][PF6], [BMIM][NTF2], and PEG200, respectively, and studied the absorption properties of these six complex absorbents for DCM and benzene. The results show that under the optimized situation, the absorptivity of [HMIM][Cl]−PEG200 complex absorbent for DCM is 85.46% in the first 5 min, and 87.15% for benzene. No obvious decay in the absorptivity of [HMIM][Cl]−PEG200 for DCM and benzene was observed in five cycles, indicating an impressive regeneration performance. A Methodology for Evaluating Driving Styles in Various Road Conditions

For many institutions, it is important to evaluate a given driving technique as safe or unsafe based on measurable vehicle movement parameters. The paper constitutes a part of studies aimed at establishing a method of parameter-based evaluation of drivers in various road conditions, in other words, to create a so-called ‘driver profile’. The tests were carried out on a 650 km route, on four varying road types. Longitudinal and lateral acceleration values are used to evaluate the driving style. An analysis is presented of the impact of the type and shape of road on acceleration values. The results demonstrate that the same driver, when driving the same vehicle on an expressway, an inter-urban road or in urban traffic, will move with various acceleration values. A detailed analysis of acceleration values and distributions was conducted. The efficiency of a skid-steer, all-wheel drive, multiple-axle vehicle with a hydrostatic drivetrain equipped with low-speed motors when it operates on soft terrain was studied. A flow divider enables a single pump to simultaneously power more than one motor circuit with different pressures in each. It prevents kinematic discrepancy and improves vehicle mobility. There are two types of flow divider: spool type and gear type, where each type has its own set of performance characteristics, such as flow range, pressure drop, accuracy and application parameters. This paper is an evaluation of the common macro-economic, micro-economic, and social factors affecting households’ financial situations. Moreover, the author’s objective was to develop a fuzzy logic model for forecasting fluctuations in the number of nonperforming consumer loans in a country using the example of Poland. This study represents one of the first attempts in the global literature to develop such a forecasting model based on macro-economic factors. The findings confirm the usefulness of the proposed innovative approach to forecasting the volume of household insolvencies in a country.

Oxytetracycline Adsorption from Aqueous Solutions on Commercial and High-Temperature Modified Activated Carbons

The aim of the work was to evaluate the possibility of using commercial and modified activated carbons for the removal of oxytetracycline from aqueous solutions. The kinetics and statics of adsorption as well as the effect of the activated carbon dose and solution pH on the efficiency of the oxytetracycline adsorption were analyzed. Based on the study of oxytetracycline adsorption isotherms, the activated carbons were ranked in the following order: F-300 > WG-12 > Picabiol > ROW08 > WACC 8 × 30 > F-100 > WAZ 0.6−2.4. The most effective activated carbons were characterized by large specific surfaces. The best matching results were obtained for: Redlich−Peterson, Thot and Jovanovic models, and lower for the most frequently used Freundlich and Langmuir models. Promoting Effect of Ultra-Fine Bubbles on CO2 Hydrate Formation

When gas hydrates dissociate into gas and liquid water, many gas bubbles form in the water. The large bubbles disappear after several minutes due to their buoyancy, while a large number of small bubbles (particularly sub-micron-order bubbles known as ultra-fine bubbles (UFBs)) remain in the water for a long time. In our previous studies, we demonstrated that the existence of UFBs is a major factor promoting gas hydrate formation. We then extended our research on this issue to carbon dioxide (CO2) as it forms structure-I hydrates, similar to methane and ethane hydrates explored in previous studies; however, CO2 saturated solutions present severe conditions for the survival of UFBs. Analysis of Zinc Oxide (ZnO) Surge Arrester Connected to Various Ground Electrodes

This paper presents impulse tests results on a zinc oxide (ZnO) surge arrester connected to four ground electrodes, with its resistance values ranging from 17 Ω to 104 Ω. It has been noted that when in series with various ground resistance values, the voltage−current characteristics of the zinc oxide (ZnO) surge arrester are far from the one tested using a common grounding, which is a standard measurement method described in IEC 60060-1. This paper clarifies the relationship between the surge arrester with various ground electrodes and its performance when tested with a common practice, based on IEC 60060-1. The tests carried out on a 15 kV ZnO surge arrester, under high-impulse conditions by field measurements, provide important information on the characteristics and ability of the surge arrester to adequately function in various ground electrodes.

Influence of Masks Protecting against SARS-CoV-2 on Thermal Comfort

Due to the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, most countries have tightened their public health policies. One way to limit the spread of the virus is to make mouth and nose cover compulsory in public spaces. The article presents the impact of wearing masks on the perception of thermal comfort. The following masks were analysed: FFP2, cotton, medical, PM2.5, half-face protective shield plastic and full-face protective shield plastic. The research was carried out for two scenarios of an ambient temperature: −20 and 30 °C. A thermal manikin was used for the tests. In the case of when a temperature equals 20 °C, the dry masks increase comfort, both general and local, while wet masks reduce comfort. On the other hand, at 30 °C, only wet masks do not increase discomfort. In addition, moist masks require less heat flux to achieve a certain skin temperature. However, it should be remembered that it is not advisable to wet the masks from the health point of view.

The Thermodynamic and Kinetic Effects of Sodium Lignin Sulfonate on Ethylene Hydrate Formation

Hydrate-based technologies (HBTs) have high potential in many fields. A Simplified Model of a Surge Arrester and Its Application in Residual Voltage Tests

A simplified and accurate model of a surge arrester used in the residual voltage test is proposed in this paper. With the help of a genetic algorithm, the measured impulse current and residual voltage waveforms are utilized to determine circuit parameters of the proposed model and the generation circuit precisely. The technique starts from the circuit parameter determination using the preliminary experimental data with a lower current peak than that specified by the standard. From the determined model and with the help of the genetic algorithm, the circuit parameters and the charging voltage to obtain the specified current peak and the residual voltage can be estimated accurately.
