Harmonic Transfers for Quantifying Propagation of Harmonics in Wind Power Plants

In this paper, primary and secondary emissions in wind power plants are studied by using transfer admittance and current transfer functions between turbines and the public grid. The use of such transfer functions allows harmonic propagation studies without knowledge of the emission from individual turbines or the background voltage distortion. The transfer functions are calculated for one synthetic and one existing wind power plant, and results are discussed. Primary emission, secondary emission from other turbines and secondary emission from the public grid are shown to be of the same order of magnitude. Furthermore, the paper addresses the impact of turbine converter modelling, public grid impedance and the change in the aggregation exponent with frequency on the propagation. All three are shown to have a significant impact and should be considered. The main challenge for future studies is in obtaining relevant models for turbine impedance versus frequency.

Cash Flow Optimization for Renewable Energy Construction Projects with a New Approach to Critical Chain Scheduling

This study concerns the use of the critical chain method to schedule the construction of renewable energy facilities. The critical chain method is recognized as a useful project management tool, transforming a stochastic problem of uncertainty in activity durations into a deterministic one. However, this method has some shortcomings. There are no clear principles of grouping non-critical activities into feeding chains. Another ambiguity is sizing the feeding buffers with regard to the topology of the network model and the resulting dependencies between activities, located in different chains. As a result, it is often necessary to arbitrarily adjust the calculated sizes of feeding buffers before inserting them into the schedule. Evaluation of Subsurface Heat Capacity through Oscillatory Thermal Response Tests

Two methods are currently available to estimate in a relatively short time span the subsurface heat capacity: (1) laboratory analysis of rock/soil samples; (2) measure the heat diffusion with temperature sensors in an observation well. Since the first may not be representative of in-situ conditions, and the second imply economical and logistical issues, a third option might be possible by means of so-called oscillatory thermal response tests (OTRT). By using text mining techniques, this study identifies the topics of sustainable consumption that are important during the COVID-19 pandemic. An Application Programming Interface (API) streaming method was used to extract the data from Twitter. A total of 14,591 tweets were collected using Twitter streaming API. The objectives of the study are to identify (1) the topics users tweet about sustainable consumption and (2) to detect the emotion-based sentiments in the tweets. Forecasting Natural Gas Spot Prices with Machine Learning

The ability to accurately forecast the spot price of natural gas benefits stakeholders and is a valuable tool for all market participants in the competitive gas market. In this paper, we attempt to forecast the natural gas spot price 1, 3, 5, and 10 days ahead using machine learning methods: support vector machines (SVM), regression trees, linear regression, Gaussian process regression (GPR), and ensemble of trees. These models are trained with a set of 21 explanatory variables in a 5-fold cross-validation scheme with 90% of the dataset used for training and the remaining 10% used for testing the out-of-sample generalization ability. The results show that these machine learning methods all have different forecasting accuracy for every time frame when it comes to forecasting natural gas spot prices. However, the bagged trees (belonging to the ensemble of trees method) and the linear SVM models have superior forecasting performance compared to the rest of the models.

This study investigated how, through knowledge calibration and a causal path model, psychological distance can explain the level of satisfaction with nuclear energy policy. The investigation used multiple regression analysis and path analysis to explore relationships among variables. Data from 1056 adults revealed that more knowledge-calibrated individuals have more positive attitudes toward nuclear energy policy. In addition, the psychological distance influences policy satisfaction by mediation of perceived risk of nuclear energy. This study aimed to increase the understanding of the dynamic of satisfaction with and acceptance of nuclear energy policy among stakeholders. A Novel Tripod Concept for Onshore Wind Turbine Towers

Thermomagnetic energy harvesters are one form of technology that can be effectively used to extract energy from low grade heat sources, without causing damage to the environment. In this study, we investigated the output performance of our previously designed thermomagnetic heat engine, which was developed to extract thermal energy by exploiting the magnetocaloric effect of gadolinium. The proposed heat engine uses water as the heat transfer fluid, with heat sources at a temperature in the range 20−65 °C. Although this method turned out to be a promising solution to extract thermal energy, the amount of energy extracted through this geometry of thermomagnetic engine was limited and depends on the interaction between magnetic flux and magnetocaloric material.
