March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: Bern Carbon Cycle model, climate change, climate impacts of agriculture system, climate modelling, climate policy, emission accounting, global temperature change potential, global warming potential, greenhouse gas emissions, impulse response function
Complex relations link climate change and agriculture. The vast majority of the studies that are looking into the quantification of the climate impacts use the Global Warming Potential (GWP) for a 100-year time horizon (GWP100) as the default metrics. The GWP, including the Bern Carbon Cycle Model (BCCM), was proposed as an alternative method to take into consideration the amount and time of emission, and the fraction of emissions that remained in the atmosphere from previous emission periods. Thus, this study aims to compare two methods for GHG emission accounting from the agriculture sector: the constant GWP100 and the time dynamic GWP100 horizon obtained by using the BCCM to find whether the obtained results will lead to similar or contradicting conclusions. Also, the effect of global temperature potential (GTP) of the studied system is summarized. The results show that the application of the BCCM would facilitate finding more efficient mitigation options for various pollutants and... [more]
Decomposition Analysis of the Carbon Emissions of the Manufacturing and Industrial Sector in Thailand

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbon emissions, decomposition, manufacturing sector, Thailand
Since the 1990s, CO2 emissions have increased steadily in line with the growth of production and the use of energy in the manufacturing sector in Thailand. The Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index Method is used for analysing the sources of changes in CO2 emissions as well as the CO2 emission intensity of the sector in 2000−2018. On average throughout the period, both the amount of CO2 emissions and the CO2 emission intensity increased each year relative to the baseline. The structural change effect (effect of changes of manufacturing production composition) reduced, but the intensity effect (effect of changes of CO2 emissions of individual industries) increased the amount of CO2 emissions and the CO2 emission intensity. The unfavourable CO2 emission intensity change came from the increased energy intensity of individual industries. The increased use of coal and electricity raised the CO2 emissions, whereas the insignificant change in emission factors showed little impact. Therefore, the stu... [more]

Keywords: alternate energy, bio-oil, cobiomass, cotton gin trash, hydrocarbon, microalgae, pyrolysis
Microalgae has proven potential for producing products that are accepted as an alternate energy source. An attempt is made to further improve the efficiency of pyrolysis in terms of product yields and characteristics by adding cotton gin trash and cattle manure as a mixed feedstock (cobiomass). A statistically significant number of treatments were made by mixing different amounts of cotton gin trash and cattle manure with microalgae (Nannochloropsis oculata). These treatments were pyrolyzed at different temperatures (400 to 600 °C ) and product yields and characteristics were analyzed. The pyrolysis of cobiomass resulted in higher yield for bio-oil and char as compared to microalgae alone. An operating temperature of 500 °C was found to be the best suitable for high bio-oil yield. The high heating values (hhv) of bio-oil were observed to be maximum at 500 °C and for syngas and char, the heating value slightly increased with further increase in temperature. Comparatively, the bio-oil (3... [more]
Earth-Cooling Air Tunnels for Thermal Power Plants: Initial Design by CFD Modelling

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: air-cooling systems, climate change, cooling systems, power plants, water scarcity, zero water use
Climate change and the increase of the consumption of energy resources are expected to further strain anticipated water stress scenarios. The operation of existing thermal plants depends greatly on their cooling capacity, for which large amounts of water are withdrawn and consumed. Dry-cooling systems, on the other hand, do not require water, but they are less efficient and more expensive relative to conventional water-based systems, because of their dependency on the ambient temperature. This paper introduces the new idea of replacing water-based cooling systems in thermal power plants with earth-cooling air tunnels. Based on the concept of existing earth-air heat exchangers, the system takes advantage of the low and relatively constant underground temperature for cooling ambient air before it is introduced in the air condenser of the plant. In this work, we present an initial design of such an open-loop system for a 20 MW concentrated solar power plant. A sensitivity study of both ge... [more]
A New Method for Peer-to-Peer Energy Exchange in Distribution Grids

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distribution system, microgrids, Nash equilibrium, peer-to-peer energy exchange, power optimization
In this paper, distribution-level peer-to-peer energy exchange is proposed that allows increased matching between load and generation nodes. Contributions of the proposed improved matching system between the local load and generation nodes aim at making efficient use of unused power generation, reducing the cost of electrical energy for consumers, and assisting utility companies by reducing transmission line congestion. The proposed system for matching the load and generation nodes consists of a financial layer and technical layer. In the financial layer, nodes with an excess of energy provide a price to sell energy, while the nodes needing energy bid on a price to purchase energy. A market-clearing mechanism using pool clearing is applied to determine a final price for peer-to-peer exchange. The technical layer determines the connection of energy transfer between the generation and load nodes while considering the distance, power flow constraints, and specified time windows. The propo... Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: acetic acid, Eucalyptus urograndis, hemicellulose, hydrolysate, Rhodotorula toruloides, single cell oil
Microbial oil is a potential substitute for vegetable oils in the biodiesel industry. Efforts to obtain cheap carbon sources for the cultivation of lipid-producing microorganisms comprise an active research area. This work aimed to extract the hemicellulose fraction from Eucalyptus uograndis and to use its hydrolysate as a carbon source for Rhodotorula toruloides (an oleaginous yeast) cultivation for microbial oil production. Hemicellulose hydrothermal extractions were performed at different temperatures, times, and ratios of solid to liquid (S/L). Temperature and time showed a stronger effect on the solubilization of hemicellulose. Hemicellulose extraction at 155 °C, 195 min, and an S/L ratio of 1/2 resulted in a hydrolysate with a xylose content of 37.0 g/l. R. toruloides cultivation in this hydrolysate showed that initial pH had a strong influence on cell growth. At an initial pH of 6.2, cells grew to 6.0 g/l of biomass with a lipid content of 50%. Therefore, we believe that E. urog... [more]

Keywords: buildings, EnergyPlus, heat pumps
Dynamic energy modelling of buildings is a key factor for developing new strategies for energy management and consumption reduction. For this reason, the EnergyPlus software was used to model a near-zero energy building (Smart Energy Buildings, SEB) located in Savona, Italy. In particular, the focus of the present paper concerns the modeling of the ground source water-to-water heat pump (WHP) and the air-to-air heat pump (AHP) installed in the SEB building. To model the WHP in EnergyPlus, the Curve Fit Method was selected. Starting from manufacturer data, this model allows to estimate the COP of the HP for different temperature working conditions. The procedure was extended to the AHP. This unit is a part of the air-handling unit and it is working as a heat recovery system. The results obtained show that the HP performance in EnergyPlus can closely follow manufacturer data if proper input recasting is performed for EnergyPlus simulations. The present paper clarifies a long series of mi... [more]

Keywords: non-intrusive load monitoring, the identification of appliances states, the identification of appliances types
Non-intrusive load monitoring, a convenient way to discern the energy consumption of a house, has been studied extensively. However, most research works have been carried out based on a hypothetical condition that each electric appliance has only one running state. This leads to low identification accuracy for multi-state electric appliances. To deal with this problem, a method for identifying the type and state of electric appliances based on a power time series is proposed in this paper. First, to identify the type of appliance, a convolutional neural network model was constructed that incorporated residual modules. Then, a k-means clustering algorithm was applied to calculate the number of states of the appliance. Finally, in order to identify the states of the appliances, different k-means clustering models were established for different multi-state electric appliances. Experimental results show effectiveness of the proposed method in identifying both the type and the running state... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, gas hydrates, in situ Raman spectroscopy, methane, molar ratio
We report an experimental study for the investigation into the suitability of hydrate formation processes for the purification of methane (CH4) from carbon dioxide (CO2) at a sub-cooling temperature of 6 K and a pressure of 4 MPa. The experiments were conducted in a stirred batch reactor. Three different initial CH4/CO2 mixtures with methane fractions of 70.1 mol%, 50.3 mol%, and 28.5 mol% were tested. The separation efficiency was quantified by measuring in situ via Raman spectroscopy the ratios of CH4/CO2 in the gas mixture, the liquid water-rich phase before hydrate formation, and the solid hydrate phase after the onset of the hydrate formation. The results indicated that the main separation effect is obtained due to the preferential dissolution of CO2 into the liquid water-rich phase before the onset of the hydrate formation.

Keywords: energy harvesting, LiPo batteries, self-discharge, storage devices, super-capacitors
This paper aims to study the limitations and performances of the main energy storage devices commonly used in energy harvesting applications, namely super-capacitors (SC) and lithium polymer (LiPo) batteries. The self-discharge phenomenon is the main limitation to the employment of SCs to store energy for a long time, thus reducing efficiency and autonomy of the energy harvesting system. Therefore, the analysis of self-discharge trends was carried out for three different models of commercial SCs, describing the phenomenon in terms of self-discharge rate and internal resistance. In addition, physical interpretations concerning the self-discharge mechanism based on the experimental data are provided, thus explaining the two super-imposed phenomena featured by distinct time constants. Afterwards, the dependence of self-discharge phenomenon from the charging time duration (namely, SCs charged at 5 V and then kept under charge for one or five hours) was analyzed; by comparing the voltage dr... Keywords: Koelreuteria paniculata biodiesel, non-edible feedstock, Optimization, physicochemical characterization, transesterification
Biodiesel is a clean and renewable fuel, which is considered as the best alternative to diesel fuel, but the feedstock contributes more than 70% of the cost. The most important constituent essential for biodiesel development is to explore cheap feedstock with high oil content. In this work, we found novel non-edible plant seeds of Koelreuteria paniculata (KP) with high oil contents of 28−30 wt.% and low free fatty acid contents (0.91%), which can serve as a promising feedstock for biodiesel production. KP seed oil can convert into biodiesel/fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) by base-catalyzed transesterification with the highest biodiesel production of 95.2% after an optimization process. We obtained the optimal transesterification conditions, i.e., oil/methanol ratio (6:1), catalyst concentration (0.32), reaction temperature (65 °C), stirring rate (700 rpm), and reaction time (80 min). The physico-chemical properties and composition of the FAME were investigated and compared with minera... [more]

Lithium iron orthosilicate (LFS) cathode can be prepared via the polyol-assisted ball milling method with the incorporation of carbon derived from eggshell membrane (ESM) for improving inherent poor electronic conduction. The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern confirmed the diffraction peaks without any presence of further impure phase. Overall, 9 wt.% of carbon was loaded on the LFS, which was identified using thermogravimetric analysis. The nature of carbon was described using parameters such as monolayer, and average surface area was 53.5 and 24 m2 g−1 with the aid of Langmuir and Brunauer−Emmett−Teller (BET) surface area respectively. The binding energy was observed at 285.66 eV for C−N owing to the nitrogen content in eggshell membrane, which provides more charge carriers for conduction. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images clearly show the carbon coating on the LFS, the porous nature of carbon, and the atom arrangements. From the cyclic voltammetry (CV) curve, the ra... Keywords: bioenergy, breeding, chlorophyll, genetics, high-throughput phenotyping, maize and rice, quantitative genetics, senescence, stay-green
In this review, we present a comprehensive revisit of past research and advances developed on the stay-green (SG) paradigm. The study aims to provide an application-focused review of the SG phenotypes as crop residuals for bioenergy. Little is known about the SG trait as a germplasm enhancer resource for energy storage as a system for alternative energy. Initially described as a single locus recessive trait, SG was shortly after reported as a quantitative trait governed by complex physiological and metabolic networks including chlorophyll efficiency, nitrogen contents, nutrient remobilization and source-sink balance. Together with the fact that phenotyping efforts have improved rapidly in the last decade, new approaches based on sensing technologies have had an impact in SG identification. Since SG is linked to delayed senescence, we present a review of the term senescence applied to crop residuals and bioenergy. Firstly, we discuss the idiosyncrasy of senescence. Secondly, we present... [more]

Keywords: criteria, Energy, Exergy, maximum power, ratios, recovery, waste heat
Waste heat recovery is an actual goal. The best way to valorize waste heat is to use it directly with the appropriate level of temperature. If the temperature level is insufficient, many reverse machine configurations are available in order to obtain the appropriate conditions (the most known are heat pumps and heat transformers). Finally, the remaining unused heat could be converted to any noble form of energy (mechanical, electrical essentially). We propose here to examine, with a new point of view, the thermomechanical conversion limit of waste heat. This limit corresponds to adiabatic conversion for an endo-reversible Carnot engine, with a perfect thermal contact at the atmospheric sink (supposed infinite). The Carnot−Chambadal model version is applied to latent and sensible heat recovery cases. The results associated with these two cases differ fundamentally. Comments are provided on the two studied cases, and new criteria to characterize the corresponding waste heat recovery are... [more]

Keywords: community-based trust funds, green credit guarantee scheme, green finance, green investment, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The lack of long-term financing, the low rate of return, the existence of various risks, and the lack of capacity of market players are major challenges for the development of green energy projects. This paper aimed to highlight the challenges of green financing and investment in renewable energy projects and to provide practical solutions for filling the green financing gap. Practical solutions include increasing the role of public financial institutions and non-banking financial institutions (pension funds and insurance companies) in long-term green investments, utilizing the spillover tax to increase the rate of return of green projects, developing green credit guarantee schemes to reduce the credit risk, establishing community-based trust funds, and addressing green investment risks via financial and policy de-risking. The paper also provides a practical example of the implementation of the proposed tools.

Keywords: combined heat and power plant, cost of down-regulation, flexibility, real-time deep down-regulation market
The issue of real-time deep down-regulation ancillary service has received increasing attention in the Northeast of China. Participation of combined heat and power plants with multitype units and flexible heating devices in the market is investigated. This paper establishes a model of feasible operating region and the coal consumption function for the combined heat and power plant. An internal optimal dispatch model and the minimum overall electric power output model for the plant satisfying a given heat load are presented. Furthermore, the models of total cost for down-regulation and average cost for deep down-regulation in two levels are established. These models are validated based on the realistic data of the plant in the Northeast of China. In case studies, the influence factors and change rules of the minimum electric power output, the total cost, and the average cost of plants are analyzed.

Keywords: anthocyanins, dye, efficiency, mortiño, sensitizer, solar cells
Photovoltaic energy presents environmental advantages; however, these advantages are limited by the cost of manufacturing solar cells and in many cases, scarce or dangerous materials are incorporated. Therefore, the use of natural dyes from mortiño (Vaccinium floribundum) as sensitizers in solar cells is proposed. The dyes were extracted by maceration in acidified methanol (HCl, citric acid and trifluoroacetic acid TFA) and were characterized by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Thin-Layer Chromatography (TLC) and spectrometric methods (UV-Vis, IR and MS-MALDI). The construction and characterization of cells were in standard conditions. The study confirms that pigments in mortiño are flavonoids of the anthocyanidin group as: cyanidin-3-galactoside, and cyanidin-3-arabinoside. The efficiency of solar cells was between 0.18−0.26%; the extraction with TFA in methanol leads to the best performance. Although they have low power conversion efficiency, mortiño dyes could be an al... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: energy management, global optimization, lowest instantaneous energy costs, oil–electric–hydraulic hybrid system
For the oil−electric−hydraulic hybrid power system, a logic threshold energy management strategy based on the optimal working curve is proposed, and the optimal working curve in each mode is determined. A genetic algorithm is used to determine the optimal parameters. For driving conditions, a real-time energy management strategy based on the lowest instantaneous energy cost is proposed. For braking conditions and subject to the European Commission for Europe (ECE) regulations, a braking force distribution strategy based on hydraulic pumps/motors and supplemented by motors is proposed. A global optimization energy management strategy is used to evaluate the strategy. Simulation results show that the strategy can achieve the expected control target and save about 32.14% compared with the fuel consumption cost of the original model 100 km 8 L. Under the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) working conditions, the energy-saving effect of this strategy is close to that of the global optimizati... [more]

Keywords: buildings, data driven, demand prediction, electricity demand, thermal demand
There is great interest in data-driven modelling for the forecasting of building energy consumption while using machine learning (ML) modelling. However, little research considers classification-based ML models. This paper compares the regression and classification ML models for daily electricity and thermal load modelling in a large, mixed-use, university building. The independent feature variables of the model include outdoor temperature, historical energy consumption data sets, and several types of ‘agent schedules’ that provide proxy information that is based on broad classes of activity undertaken by the building’s inhabitants. The case study compares four different ML models testing three different feature sets with a genetic algorithm (GA) used to optimize the feature sets for those ML models without an embedded feature selection process. The results show that the regression models perform significantly better than classification models for the prediction of electricity demand a... [more]

Close-packed contra-rotating vertical-axis turbines have potential advantages in wind and hydrokinetic power generation. This paper describes the development of a numerical model of a vertical axis turbine with a torque-controlled system using an actuator line model (ALM). The developed model, coupled with the open-source OpenFOAM computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, is used to examine the characteristics of turbulent flow behind a single two-bladed vertical-axis turbine (VAT). The flow field containing the turbine is simulated by solving the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations with a k - ω shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model. The numerical model is validated against experimental measurements from a two-bladed H-type wind turbine. Turbine loading is predicted, and the vorticity distribution is investigated in the vicinity of the turbine. Satisfactory overall agreement is obtained between numerical predictions and measured data on thrust co... [more]

Keywords: diesel engine, Moore–Glasberg loudness, sharpness, sound evaluation, sound improvement
Traditional acoustic evaluation of a diesel engine generally uses the A-weighted sound pressure level (AWSPL) and radiated sound power to assess the noise of an engine prototype present in an experiment. However, this cannot accurately and comprehensively reflect the auditory senses of human subjects during the simulation stage. To overcome such shortage, the Moore−Glasberg loudness and sharpness approach is applied to evaluate and improve the sound quality (SQ) of a 16 V-type marine diesel engine, and synthesizing noise audio files. Through finite element (FE) simulations, the modes of the engine’s block and the average vibrational velocity of the entire engine surface were calculated and compared with the test results. By further applying an automatically matched layer (AML) approach, the engine-radiated sound pressure level (SPL) and sound power contributions of all engine parts were obtained. By analyzing the Moore−Glasberg loudness and sharpness characteristics of three critical s... [more]

This study presents the further development of the TU Wien dual fuel mechanism, which was optimized for simulating ignition and combustion in a rapid compression expansion machine (RCEM) in dual fuel mode using diesel and natural gas at pressures higher than 60 bar at the start of injection. The mechanism is based on the Complete San Diego mechanism with n-heptane extension and was attuned to the RCEM measurements to achieve high agreement between experiments and simulation. This resulted in a specific application area. To obtain a mechanism for a wider parameter range, the Arrhenius parameter changes performed were analyzed and updated. Furthermore, the San Diego nitrogen sub-mechanism was added to consider NOx formation. The ignition delay time-reducing effect of propane addition to methane was closely examined and improved. To investigate the propagation of the flame front, the laminar flame speed of methane−air mixtures was simulated and compared with measured values from literatur... [more]

This study adopts a multi-disciplinary optimization design method based on an approximation model to improve the comprehensive performance of axial-flow pump impellers and fully consider the interaction and mutual influences of the hydraulic and structural designs. The lightweight research on axial-flow pump impellers takes the blade mass and efficiency of the design condition as the objective functions and the head, efficiency, maximum stress value, and maximum deformation value under small flow condition as constraints. In the optimization process, the head of the design condition remains unchanged or varies in a small range. Results show that the mass of a single blade was reduced from 0.947 to 0.848 kg, reaching a decrease of 10.47%, and the efficiency of the design condition increased from 93.91% to 94.49%, with an increase rate of 0.61%. Accordingly, the optimization effect was evident. In addition, the error between the approximate model results and calculation results of each r... [more]

Keywords: Gompertz model, numerical analysis, photovoltaic system performance, power output prediction, satellite-derived global horizontal irradiance
A simple yet accurate photovoltaic (PV) performance curve as a function of satellite-based solar irradiation is necessary to develop a PV power forecasting model that can cover all of South Korea, where more than 35,000 PV power plants are currently in operation. In order to express the nonlinear power output of the PV module with respect to the hourly global horizontal irradiance derived from satellite images, this study employed the Gompertz model, which is composed of three parameters and the sigmoid equation. The nonphysical behavior of the Gompertz model within the low solar irradiation range was corrected by combining a linear equation with the same gradient at the conjoint point. The overall fitness of Linear-Gompertz regression to the 242 PV power plants representing the country was R2 = 0.85 and nRMSE = 0.09. The Gompertz model coefficients showed normal distributions and equivariance of standard deviations of less than 15% by year and by season. Therefore, it can be conjectur... [more]

Keywords: carbon emission reduction, four-stage model, passenger demand, residents’ trip survey, urban rail transit
There are increasing traffic pollution issues in the process of urbanization in many countries; urban rail transit is low-carbon and widely regarded as an effective way to solve such problems. The passenger flow proportion of different transportation types is changing along with the adjustment of the urban traffic structure and a growing demand from passengers. The reduction of carbon emissions brought about by rail transit lacks specific quantitative research. Based on a travel survey of urban residents, this paper constructed a method of estimating carbon emissions from two different scenarios where rail transit is and is not available. This study uses the traditional four-stage model to forecast passenger volume demand at the city level and then obtains the basic target parameters for constructing the carbon emission reduction model, including the trip origin-destination (OD), mode, and corresponding distance range of different modes on the urban road network. This model was applied... [more]
