March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: Energy Storage, F-factors, mathematical optimization, security of supply, security standards
The ongoing electrification of the heat and transport sectors is expected to lead to a substantial increase in peak electricity demand over the coming decades, which may drive significant investment in network reinforcement in order to maintain a secure supply of electricity to consumers. The traditional way of security provision has been based on conventional investments such as the upgrade of the capacity of electricity transmission or distribution lines. However, energy storage can also provide security of supply. In this context, the current paper presents a methodology for the quantification of the security contribution of energy storage, based on the use of mathematical optimization for the calculation of the F-factor metric, which reflects the optimal amount of peak demand reduction that can be achieved as compared to the power capability of the corresponding energy storage asset. In this context, case studies underline that the F-factors decrease with greater storage power capa... [more]

This paper analyzes and quantifies the relationship between industrialization, energy systems, and carbon emissions. Firstly, it forecasts the global and regional industrialization trends under Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) and Shared Socioeconomic Pathway2 (SSP2) scenarios. Then, it projects the global and regional energy consumption that aligns with the industrialization trend, and optimizes the global energy supply system using the Model for Energy Supply Strategy Alternatives and their General Environmental Impact (MESSAGE) model for the industrial sector. Moreover, it develops an expanded Kaya identity to comprehensively investigate the drivers of industrial carbon emissions. In addition, it employs a Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index (LMDI) approach to track the historical contributions... [more]
A Lifetime-Enhancing Method for Directional Sensor Networks with a New Hybrid Energy-Consumption Pattern in Q-coverage Scenarios
Song Peng, Yonghua Xiong
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cluster head selection, energy consumption, inter-cluster communication, network lifetime, Q-coverage, sensing direction scheduling
An important issue in directional sensor networks (DSNs) is how to prolong the network lifetime in Q-coverage scenarios where each target point may have different coverage requirements. When the Q-coverage requirement is met, it is an effective way to maximize the network lifetime by controlling energy consumptions. Unlike the existing results where only the sensing energy consumption is considered, this paper proposes a new hybrid energy consumption pattern, which reflects the reality of energy consumptions more closely. In such a pattern, both sensing and communication energy consumptions are considered. By combining scheduling and clustering technologies to control these two kinds of energy consumptions in each round, a new lifetime-enhancing method (NLEM) is devised to prolong the network lifetime. First, a sensing direction scheduling algorithm for Q-coverage is proposed to make different sensing direction sets meet the coverage requirement of each target point. Then, a new cluste... [more]

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: aerogel, thermal annealing, transient building physical properties
Nowadays, the usage of thermal insulation materials is widespread not only in the building sector but also in the vehicle industry. The application of fibrous or loose-fill insulation materials like glass wool or mineral wool as well as aerogel is well known. Aerogel-based materials are among the best solid materials for thermal insulation available today; they are prepared through a sol−gel process. For building walls, the glass-fiber-enhanced types are the frequently used ones. They are prepared by adding the liquid−solid solution to the fibrous batting, which is called a sol−gel process. In the present paper, the changes in the most important building physical properties of aerogel blankets after thermal annealing are presented. The samples were subjected to isochronal heat treatments from 70 to 210 °C for 24 h. The changes in the thermal conductivity were followed by Holometrix Lambda heat flow meter, and differential scanning calorimetry results were also recorded. From the measur... [more]

Keywords: brushless DC motor, classification, deep networks, long short-term memory networks, neural networks, stator, vibrations
In this research, electric motors faults and their identification is reviewed. Brushless direct-current (BLDC) motors stator fault identification using long short-term memory neural networks were analyzed. A proposed method of vibration data acquisition using cloud technologies with high accuracy, feature extraction using spectral entropy, and instantaneous frequency and standardization using mean and standard deviation was reviewed. Additionally, model training with raw and standardized data was compared. A total model accuracy of 97.10 percent was achieved. The proposed methods could successfully identify the motor stator status from normal, to loss of stator winding imminent and arcing, and lastly to open circuit in stator winding—motor needing to stop immediately—by using gathered data from real experiments, training the model and testing it theoretically.

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: constitutive model, gel, non-Newtonian fluid, pressure drop, temperature, temperature-dependent viscosity
In general, rheological properties of gelled fuels change dramatically when temperature changes. In this work, we investigate flow and heat transfer of water-gel in a straight pipe and a tapered injector for non-isothermal conditions, which mimic the situations when gelled fuels are used in propulsion systems. The gel-fluid is modeled as a non-Newtonian fluid, where the viscosity depends on the shear rate and the temperature; a correlation fitted with experimental data is used. For the fully developed flow in a straight pipe with heating, the mean apparent viscosity at the cross section when the temperature is high is only 44% of the case with low temperature; this indicates that it is feasible to control the viscosity of gel fuel by proper thermal design of pipes. For the flow in the typical tapered injector, larger temperature gradients along the radial direction results in a more obvious plug flow; that is, when the fuel is heated the viscosity near the wall is significantly reduced... March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: co-digestion, flexible biogas production, food waste, Modelling, sewage sludge
This paper explores the feasibility of flexible biogas production by co-digestion of food waste and sewage sludge based on experiments and mathematical modeling. First, laboratory-scale experiments were carried out in variable operating conditions in terms of organic loading rate and feeding frequency to the digester. It is demonstrated that biogas production can achieve rapid responses to arbitrary feedings through co-digestion, and the stability of the anaerobic digestion process is not affected by the overloading of substrates. Compared with the conventional continuous mode, the required biogas storage capacity in flexible feeding mode can be significantly reduced. The optimum employed feeding organic loading rate (OLR) is identified, and how to adjust the feeding scheme for flexible biogas production is also discussed. Finally, a simplified prediction model for flexible biogas production is proposed and verified by experimental data, which could be conveniently used for demand-orie... [more]

Keywords: bio-solar house, heating, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, simulation model, ventilation
The need for heating and cooling in traditional housing is becoming increasingly disadvantageous regarding high energy costs. But what is more concerning is the impact on our environment. The main goal of this paper is studying the prospects of using renewable energy for heating and cooling houses through an integrated bio-solar system in order to solve the energy scarcity problem. For this purpose, a simulation model for a bio-solar house made from different materials (walls made of bricks with straw bales and a roof made of concrete with straw bales) was developed successively in accordance with the energy balance and renewable energies such as biogas and solar energy were applied. This approach enabled an enhancement of the main factors affecting the performance of a building in terms of saving energy. The model was able to predict the energy requirements for heating and cooling of houses, the energy gained by a solar collector and by a biogas digester as well as the energy requirem... [more]
Determination of the Required Power Response of Inverters to Provide Fast Frequency Support in Power Systems with Low Synchronous Inertia

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: critical time, fast power reserve, frequency nadir, low inertia grids
The decommissioning of conventional power plants and the installation of inverter-based renewable energy technologies decrease the overall power system inertia, increasing the rate of change of frequency of a system (RoCoF). These expected high values of RoCoF shorten the time response needed before load shedding or generation curtailment takes place. In a future scenario where renewables are predominant in power systems, the ability of synchronous machines to meet such conditions is uncertain in terms of capacity and time response. The implementation of fast power reserve and synthetic inertia from inverter-based sources was assessed through the simulation of two scenarios with different grid sizes and primary reserve responses. As main results it was obtained that the full activation time for a fast power reserve with penetration above 80% of inverter-based generation would need to be 100 ms or less for imbalances up to 40%, regardless of the synchronous response and grid size, meani... Keywords: agricultural biomass, biofuel, mechanical durability, physicochemical properties
This paper presents an analysis of selected qualitative characteristics of pellets produced from rape straw obtained from cultivations subjected to different fertilization treatments and from mixtures of straw selected for testing with crude glycerol obtained as a by-product from biodiesel production. The assessment focused on the following qualities of the obtained pellets: Moisture content, mechanical durability, heating value and main elements, that is, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulphur, chlorine and oxygen. The obtained results indicated that the different treatment regimens applied in spring rape cultivations had a significant impact on the physicochemical qualities of the straw. In terms of the heating value, traditional fertilization with multi-component fertilizer (NPK) yielded slightly lower chemical parameters (lower carbon content and heat of combustion) than in the case of straw obtained from the control sample and from the plot fertilized with digestate. Furthermore, in... [more]

Keywords: maximum power point tracking, partial shading, pattern search method, solar power system
This article presents a method for the Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) of a Photovoltaic (PV) panels array with partial shading, applying an Improved Pattern Search Method (IPSM). The method is simulated in PSIM @ and then implemented in hardware in the loop system, emulating the PV array on an industrial computer (Speedgoat) that allows real-time emulations and the IPSM is applied in an Arduino DUE. The experiments were carried out with TP245S-20/WD, KYOCERA KC200GT, YINGLY SOLAR JS65, and MSX60 photovoltaic panels. The results are the proper MPPT with changes in partial shading over time, inducing the increase and decrease of the maximum power point. The results obtained are the search for the global maximum power point in a matrix of panels in which, due to partial shading, it might have several local maximum power points, and thanks to the IPSM algorithm, it always manages to find the global maximum power point. Finally, the results are compared with other methods where... [more]

Keywords: composite sinusoidal waveform charging, direct digital synthesis, lithium-ion battery, pulse width modulation
To address the defects in lithium-ion battery lifespan, this paper proposes a composite waveform generation strategy that offers capacity-recovering effect. Based on digital architecture, this study exploits direct digital synthesis (DDS) to generate data, which are then processed in an analog-to-digital converter to produce a predefined voltage waveform signal. In the process, an arbitrary waveform is converted to digital voltage waveform signal through pulse width modulation (PWM) technology, thus realizing waveform generation through DDS. Subsequently, analog-to-digital conversion is accomplished by going through a buck circuit, resulting in a composite sinusoidal waveform that is used to charge the battery with a recovering effect. This paper comprises an introduction of effective waveforms for capacity recovering, methods of generating composite sinusoidal waveforms, and an example of the application of composite sinusoidal waveform generation. The waveform produced by the circuit... [more]

Keywords: coke formation, GHSV, S/C ratio, Steam Reforming, Toluene
Identifying the suitable reaction conditions is key to achieve high performance and economic efficiency in any catalytic process. In this study, the catalytic performance of a Ni/Al2O3 catalyst, a benchmark system—was investigated in steam reforming of toluene as a biomass gasification tar model compound to explore the effect of reforming temperature, steam to carbon (S/C) ratio and residence time on toluene conversion and gas products. An S/C molar ratio range from one to three and temperature range from 700 to 900 °C was selected according to thermodynamic equilibrium calculations, and gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) was varied from 30,600 to 122,400 h−1 based on previous work. The results suggest that 800 °C, GHSV 61,200 h−1 and S/C ratio 3 provide favourable operating conditions for steam reforming of toluene in order to get high toluene conversion and hydrogen productivity, achieving a toluene to gas conversion of 94% and H2 production of 13 mol/mol toluene.

Keywords: accuracy correction, lithium-ion battery, SOH estimation, XGBoost
SOH (state of health) estimation is important for battery management. Since the electrochemical reaction inside LIBS (lithium-ion battery system) is extremely complex and the external working environment is uncertain, it is difficult to achieve accurate determination of SOH. To improve the accuracy of SOH estimation, we propose a SOH estimation method for lithium-ion battery based on XGBoost algorithm with accuracy correction. We extract several features, including average voltage, voltage difference, current difference, and temperature difference, to describe the aging process of batteries. Due to the higher prediction accuracy and generalization ability of ensemble learning algorithm, the XGBoost model is established to estimate the SOH of lithium-ion battery. Then, the estimation values are corrected by Markov chain. Compared with the methods by XGBoost, random forest, k-nearest neighbor algorithm (KNN), SVM, linear regression, our proposed method shows an accuracy improvement by 10... [more]

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: gas turbine engine, multiphase flow, particle deposition, turbine blade
Particle deposition tests were conducted in a turbine deposition facility with an internally staged single-tube combustor to investigate the individual effect of the gas temperature and angle of attack. Sand particles were seeded to the combustor and deposited on a turbine blade with film-cooling holes at temperatures representative of modern engines. Fuel-air ratios were varied from 0.022 to 0.037 to achieve a gas temperature between 1272 and 1668 K. Results show that capture efficiency increased with increasing gas temperature. A dramatic increase in capture efficiency was noted when gas temperature exceeded the threshold. The deposition formed mostly downstream of the film-cooling holes on the pressure surface, while it concentrated on the suction surface at the trailing edge. Deposition tests at angles of attack between 10° and 40° presented changes in both deposition mass and distribution. The capture efficiency increased with the increase in the angle of attack, and simultaneousl... [more]

Keywords: district cooling (DC), district heating (DH), expert opinion survey, low temperature district heating (LTDH)
Among the available solutions for building heating and cooling, district heating (DH) and district cooling (DC) systems are considered some of the best options since they can ensure a better control of pollutant emissions and greater efficiency than individual systems. Nevertheless, improvements are needed to increase their sustainability and reliability. The so-called “low temperature district heating” (LTDH) concept has been introduced in recent years in an attempt (i) to reduce the distribution heat losses through a temperature decrease in the DH network, (ii) to favor the integration with renewable energy sources, and (iii) to create the conditions required for the development of future smart energy systems. However, many concerns have been raised about its implementation in both existing and new systems. For this reason, this paper aims to identify the stakeholders’ ranking of the barriers against LTDH system development and implementation over the next few years. Aiming to this,... [more]

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: backward injection, compound angle, film cooling, gas turbine
Backward injection film cooling holes were studied to improve film cooling effectiveness using simple cylindrical holes, and this principle was applied to an actual gas turbine. Although film cooling effectiveness was improved using a backward injection film cooling hole, the backward flow of combustion gas from the backward injection cooling hole was one of the major reasons for cracks in the hot components. To prevent cracks and backward flow in the backward injection film cooling hole, this study changed the inlet compound angle of the backward injection film cooling hole. Numerical analysis using CFX v. 17.0 was performed to calculate the flow characteristics and film cooling effectiveness of backward injection film cooling. Aa a result, the effect of the inlet compound angle of the backward injection film cooling hole was confirmed to prevent the backward flow, which increased upon increasing the inlet compound angle. This study shows that the backward flow and cracks in the backw... [more]

Keywords: Bayesian hyper-parameter optimization, fault diagnosis, gradient boosting algorithm, LightGBM, maximum information coefficient
It is widely accepted that conventional boost algorithms are of low efficiency and accuracy in dealing with big data collected from wind turbine operations. To address this issue, this paper is devoted to the application of an adaptive LightGBM method for wind turbine fault detections. To this end, the realization of feature selection for fault detection is firstly achieved by utilizing the maximum information coefficient to analyze the correlation among features in supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) of wind turbines. After that, a performance evaluation criterion is proposed for the improved LightGBM model to support fault detections. In this scheme, by embedding the confusion matrix as a performance indicator, an improved LightGBM fault detection approach is then developed. Based on the adaptive LightGBM fault detection model, a fault detection strategy for wind turbine gearboxes is investigated. Palm oil is one of the most consumed oils, one of whose refining steps is the removal of pigments and other substances using bleaching clay as adsorbent. Worldwide production of this oil was 70 million tons in 2017, requiring 1 t of clay to produce 1000 t of refined oil. The residual bleaching clay, having an oil fraction (12.70%) rich in phenolics, carotenoids and tocopherols, was extracted in this study with ethanol to obtain an antioxidant-rich palm oil bleaching extract (POBE), with the aim of using it as a natural antioxidant source. The POBE antioxidant capacity determined by the DPPH method corresponded to a 20.29% inhibition of radical formation. The POBE was also tested for its potential to enhance oxidative stability of passion fruit, pracaxi and Brazil nut oils used as reference oils, and compared to common synthetic antioxidants (tert-butylhydroquinone and propyl gallate), either separately as controls or in mixtures with them. Besides the increased oxidative stability of t... [more]

Improving energy recycle is an important way to save energy resources and preserve the global environment. Chemical heat pump (CHP) is a technology for saving energy, which utilizes chemical reactions to store thermal energy such as waste heat and solar heat, then release it to provide heat for heating/cooling/refrigeration. For a practical CHP, it is necessary to find cheaper and more stable supply materials. In order to evaluate the possibility of calcium oxide from natural Ofunato natural limestone including impurities, we compare Ofunato limestone with Kawara natural limestone and Garou natural limestone from Japan. These calcium oxides worked as a reactant for CaO/H2O/Ca(OH)2 CHP by repeated hydration/dehydration reaction cycle experiments in a thermogravimetric analyzer. As a result, Ofunato CaO exhibits a high hydration reaction rate after decarbonization at 1223 K for 5 h. The reactivity increased by the repeated hydration reaction although the first hydration rate was low. Fur... [more]

The solar thermochemical fuel pathway offers the possibility to defossilize the transportation sector by producing renewable fuels that emit significantly less greenhouse gases than conventional fuels over the whole life cycle. Especially for the aviation sector, the availability of renewable liquid hydrocarbon fuels enables climate impact goals to be reached. In this paper, both the geographical potential and life-cycle fuel production costs are analyzed. The assessment of the geographical potential of solar thermochemical fuels excludes areas based on sustainability criteria such as competing land use, protected areas, slope, or shifting sands. On the remaining suitable areas, the production potential surpasses the current global jet fuel demand by a factor of more than fifty, enabling all but one country to cover its own demand. In many cases, a single country can even supply the world demand for jet fuel. A dedicated economic model expresses the life-cycle fuel production costs as... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: deterministic optimization algorithm, global optimization, implicit model solution, metaheuristic optimization algorithm, partial shading, photovoltaic array, series–parallel
The implicit model of photovoltaic (PV) arrays in series-parallel (SP) configuration does not require the LambertW function, since it uses the single-diode model, to represent each submodule, and the implicit current-voltage relationship to construct systems of nonlinear equations that describe the electrical behavior of a PV generator. However, the implicit model does not analyze different solution methods to reduce computation time. This paper formulates the solution of the implicit model of SP arrays as an optimization problem with restrictions for all the variables, i.e., submodules voltages, blocking diode voltage, and strings currents. Such an optimization problem is solved by using two deterministic (Trust-Region Dogleg and Levenberg Marquard) and two metaheuristics (Weighted Differential Evolution and Symbiotic Organism Search) optimization algorithms to reproduce the current−voltage (I−V) curves of small, medium, and large generators operating under homogeneous and non-homogen...
