March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: isolation dc-dc converter, LLC resonant converter, series-connected devices, solid-state-transformer (SST)
This paper describes the design of a Series-Connected Device based on a fixed−frequency LLC resonant converter (SCDLLC). Isolation of the dc-dc converter like the LLC resonant converter is used for the stability of the high voltage system such as a solid-state-transformer (SST). The series-connected devices driving method is one of the methods applicable to a high voltage system. When driving series-connected devices, an auxiliary circuit for voltage balancing between series-connected devices is required, which can be simply implemented using a passive element. In this paper, LLC converter design with balancing circuits configured in parallel with a device is provided, and both the simulations and experiments were performed.

Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: microbial fuel cell, wastewater treatment, wood industry wastewater
Microbial fuel cell (MFC) has the potential to become a promising sustainable technology of wastewater treatment. Usually, the investigations on MFCs are aimed at maximized power production in the system. In this article, we focused on the optimization of wood industry wastewater treatment in MFC, in combination with municipal wastewater as a source of microorganisms. We investigated the influence of different external resistance (2000 Ω, 1000 Ω, 500 Ω, and 100 Ω) on power density and wastewater treatment efficiency (chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal) in 1-month MFC operation time. We found that the highest COD removal was for MFCs under R = 1000 Ω after 22 days of MFC operation, while the highest current density was obtained for the lowest applied resistance. The results imply that wastewater treatment parameters such as resistance and time of MFC operation should be a subject of optimization for each specific type of wastewater used, in order to maximize either wastewater treatmen... Agriculture affects both the quantity and the quality of water available for other purposes, which becomes problematic, especially during increasingly frequent severe droughts. This requires tapping into the resources that are typically neglected. One such resource is a by-product of anaerobic digestion, in which moisture content typically exceeds 90%. Application of hydrothermal carbonization process (HTC) to this residue could partially remove organic and inorganic material, improve dewatering, decrease the overall solid mass, sanitize the digestate, change its properties, and eliminate problems related with emissions of odors from the installation. However, a significant gap still exists in terms of the dewatering of the hydrochars and the composition of the effluents. This work presents results of experimental investigation focused on the removal of organic compounds from the HTC effluent. Results of qualitative and quantitative analysis of liquid by-products of HTC of the agricult... [more]

Keywords: field-programmable gate array, finite set-model predictive control, model-based design, voltage source inverter, Xilinx system generator
Finite set-model predictive control (FS-MPC) is used for power converters and drives having unique advantages as compared to the conventional control strategies. However, the computational burden of the FS-MPC is a primary concern for real-time implementation. Field programmable gate array (FPGA) is an alternative and exciting solution for real-time implementation because of the parallel processing capability, as well as, discrete nature of the hardware platform. Nevertheless, FPGA is capable of handling the computational requirements for the FS-MPC implementation, however, the system development involves multiple steps that lead to the time-consuming debugging process. Moreover, specific hardware coding skill makes it more complex corresponding to an increase in system complexity that leads to a tedious task for system development. This paper presents an FPGA-based experimental implementation of FS-MPC using the system modeling approach. Furthermore, a comparative analysis of FS-MPC i... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: Belgium, energy system modelling, energy transition, EnergyScope, multi-sectors
Different scenarios at different scales must be studied to help define long term policies to decarbonate our societies. In this work, we analyse the Belgian energy system in 2035 for different carbon emission targets, and accounting for electricity, heat, and mobility. To achieve this objective, we applied the EnergyScope Typical Days open source model, which optimises both the investment and the operation strategy of a complete energy system for a target year. The model includes 96 technologies and 24 resources that have to supply, hourly, the heat, electricity, mobility, and non-energy demands. In line with other research, we identify and quantify, with a merit order, different technological steps of the energy transition. The lack of endogenous resources in Belgium is highlighted and estimated at 275.6 TWh/y. It becomes obvious that additional potentials shall be obtained by importing renewable fuels and/or electricity, deploying geothermal energy, etc. Aside from a reduction of the... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: co-combustion, coal waste, environmental and economic efficiency, municipal solid waste, thermal power plant, waste petroleum oil
Combustion characteristics were studied experimentally for single droplets of fuel slurries based on wet coal processing waste with municipal solid waste components (cardboard, plastic, rubber, and wood) and used turbine oil. We established the ignition delay time for three various groups of fuel compositions in motionless air at 600−1000 °C. The minimum values are 3 s, and the maximum ones are 25 s. The maximum temperatures in the droplet vicinity reach 1300 °C during fuel combustion for compositions with 10% of used oil. The combustion temperatures of fuel compositions without oil are 200−300 °C lower. The concentrations of anthropogenic emissions in flue gases do not exceed those from dry coal combustion. Adding used oils to composite fuels reduces the concentrations of dioxins and furans in flue gases when municipal solid waste in the fuel burns out due to high combustion temperatures. Based on the experimental research findings, we have elaborated a strategy of combined industrial... [more]

Keywords: brushless drive, efficiency, industrial application, permanent magnet motor, synchronous motor
The global decarbonization targets require increasingly higher levels of efficiency from the designers of electrical machines. In this context, the opportunity to employ magnetic or semi-magnetic wedges in surface-mounted permanent magnet machines with fractional-slot concentrated winding has been evaluated in this paper, with the aim to reduce the power losses, especially in the magnets. Since an analytical calculation is not sufficient for this evaluation, finite element methods with two different software have been employed, by using a model experimentally validated on a real motor. The effects of wedges with different values of permeability and different magnetization characteristics have been evaluated on flux density, back electromotive force, and inductances, in order to choose the more suitable wedge for the considered motor. Furthermore, a new wedge consisting of different portions of materials with different magnetic permeability values is proposed. The effects of both conven... [more]

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Machine Learning, nonlocal effects, turbulence modeling
Reynolds-stress closure modeling is critical to Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) analysis, and it remains a challenging issue in reducing both structural and parametric inaccuracies. This study first proposes a novel algebraic stress model named as tensorial quadratic eddy-viscosity model (TQEVM), in which nonlinear terms improve previous model-form failure due to neglection of nonlocal effects. Then a data-driven regression model based on a fully-connected deep neural network is designed to determine the TQEVM coefficients. The well-trained data-driven model using high-fidelity direct numerical simulation (DNS) data successfully learned the underlying input-output relationships, further obtaining spatial-dependent optimal values of these coefficients. Finally, detailed validations are made in wall-bounded flows where nonlocal effects are expected to be significant. Comparative results indicate that TQEVM provides improvements both for the stress-strain misalignment and stress an... [more]

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: buck-boost converter, energy storage system, fault ride-through capability, hybrid
This work presents a fault ride-through control scheme for a non-isolated power topology used in a hybrid energy storage system designed for DC microgrids. The hybrid system is formed by a lithium-ion battery bank and a supercapacitor module, both coordinated to achieve a high-energy and high-power combined storage system. This hybrid system is connected to a DC bus that manages the power flow of the microgrid. The power topology under consideration is based on the buck-boost bidirectional converter, and it is controlled through a bespoke modulation scheme to obtain low losses at nominal operation. The operation of the proposed control scheme during a DC bus short-circuit failure is shown, as well as a modification to the standard control to achieve fault ride-through capability once the fault is over. The proposed control provides a protection to the energy storage systems and the converter itself during the DC bus short-circuit fault. The operation of the converter is developed theor... [more]

Keywords: anode dehydration, cathode pore blockage, cold start, failure mode, polymer electrolyte fuel cell
In this study, the cold-start failure processes of a polymer electrolyte fuel cell have been investigated numerically for different initial membrane water content λ 0 and the startup current densities I 0 . The result shows that the failure of the cell cold-start process is mostly attributed to the anode dehydration when the cell operates with relatively large current density. However, the failure is dominated by the cathode pore blockage when the cell starts with relatively high initial membrane water content. Corresponding maps for the classification of startup failure modes are plotted on the λ 0 − I 0 plane with different startup temperatures. Three zones, including the anode dehydration, the cathode pore blockage, and the ambiguous region, can be observed. They can be distinguished with different startup failure mechanisms. The anode dehydration zone is expanded as the cell startup temperature drops due to the weakening of the membrane water back-dif... [more]

Keywords: Li ion, lithium ion, sintering, solid state electrolyte, thermal conductivity
The electrolyte is one of the three essential constituents of a Lithium-Ion battery (LiB) in addition to the anode and cathode. During increasingly high power and high current charging and discharging, the requirement for the electrolyte becomes more strict. Solid State Electrolyte (SSE) sees its niche for high power applications due to its ability to suppress concentration polarization and otherwise stable properties also related to safety. During high power and high current cycling, heat management becomes more important and thermal conductivity measurements are needed. In this work, thermal conductivity was measured for three types of solid state electrolytes: Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO), Li 1.5 Al 0.5 Ge 1.5 (PO 4 ) 3 (LAGP), and Li 1.3 Al 0.3 Ti 1.7 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP) at different compaction pressures. LAGP and LATP were measured after sintering, and LLZO was measured befo... [more]

Keywords: ocean mixed layer, offshore wind resource, prediction model, sea surface temperature, weather research forecasting, wind power production
An atmosphere−ocean coupled model is proposed as an optimal numerical prediction method for the offshore wind resource. Meteorological prediction models are mainly used for wind speed prediction, with active studies using atmospheric models. Seawater mixing occurring at sea due to solar radiation and wind intensity can significantly change the sea surface temperature (SST), an important variable for predicting wind resources and energy production, considering its wind effect, within a short time. This study used the weather research forecasting and ocean mixed layer (WRF-OML) model, an atmosphere−ocean coupled model, to reflect time-dependent SST and sea surface fluxes. Results are compared with those of the WRF model, another atmospheric model, and verified through comparison with observation data of a meteorological mast (met-mast) at sea. At a height of 94 m, the wind speed predicted had a bias and root mean square error of 1.09 m/s and 2.88 m/s for the WRF model, and −0.07 m/s and... [more]

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: network partition, photovoltaic generation, zonal scheduling, zonal voltage control
The penetration of photovoltaic (PV) outputs brings great challenges to optimal operation of active distribution networks (ADNs), especially leading to more serious overvoltage problems. This study proposes a zonal voltage control scheme based on multiple spatiotemporal characteristics for highly penetrated PVs in ADNs. In the spatial domain, a community detection algorithm using a reactive/ active power quality function was introduced to partition an ADN into sub-networks. In the time domain, short-term zonal scheduling (SZS) with 1 h granularity was drawn up based on a cluster. The objective was to minimize the supported reactive power and the curtailed active power in reactive and active power sub-networks. Additionally, a real-time zonal voltage control scheme (RZVC) with 1 min granularity was proposed to correct the SZS rapidly by choosing and controlling the key PV inverter to regulate the supported reactive power and the curtailed active power of the inverters to prevent the ove... Keywords: formation and decomposition, gas reservoir, natural gas hydrate, prediction method, sensitivity influence
In recent years, the exploitation and utilization of offshore oil and gas resources have attracted more attention. In offshore gas reservoir production, wellbore temperature and pressure change continuously when water-bearing natural gas flows upward. The wellbore temperature is also affected by the low-temperature sea water. The combination of temperatures and pressures controlled by the upward flow, and cooling from the surrounding seawater frequently leads to the conditions of temperature and pressure for hydrate formation. This can lead to pipeline blockage and other safety accidents. In this study, we utilize mathematical models of hydrate phase equilibrium, wellbore temperature, wellbore pressure to study hydrate formation and decomposition in offshore gas reservoir production. Numerical solution algorithms are developed and numerical solutions are validated. The sensitivity influence of different parameters on the regions and regularities of hydrate formation and decomposition i... [more]

Keywords: ECMS, EMS, equalization, hybrid system, switch network
Environmentally friendly and pollution-free fuel cell/lithium battery hybrid vehicles have received the attention of the community in recent years. It is imperative for fuel cell/lithium battery hybrid vehicles to use the energy management strategy (EMS) to distribute the output power of each power source to improve fuel economy and system life. In practical application, inconsistency of battery pack will lead to security hazard and capacity degradation. However, few EMS take the inconsistency of battery pack into account. Also, the current battery equalization strategy rarely discusses how to perform the equilibrium process while meeting the power demand of vehicle. To solve these issues, a novel equalization energy management strategy (EEMS) based on the switch network is proposed at first. Then, a switched energy management strategy (SEMS) that switches between the EEMS and the equivalent consumption minimization strategy (ECMS) is proposed and implemented in the fuel cell/lithium b... Keywords: battery life, electric vehicles, electric vehicles, hybrid energy storage system, supercapacitor
A battery/supercapacitor hybrid energy storage system is developed to mitigate the battery degradation for electric vehicles. By coordinating the battery and supercapacitor, the proposed system avoids using the large bidirectional DC/DC. The conversion of electrical energy into acoustic energy in an electrical motor through electromagnetic, mechanical, or acoustic platforms is illustrated through numerical computations of magnetic forces, mechanical deformation, and acoustic noise. The magnetic forces were computed through 2D electromagnetic finite element simulation, and the deformation of the stator due to these forces was calculated using 3D structural finite element simulation. Finally, boundary element-based computation was employed to calculate the sound pressur... [more]

Keywords: 3ω method, nanofluids, temperature gradient, thermal conductivity
In this study, the 3ω method was used to determine the thermal conductivity of nanofluids (ethylene glycol containing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)) with temperature gradients. The thermal modeling of the traditional 3ω method was modified to measure the spatial variation of thermal conductivity within a droplet of nanofluid. A direct current (DC) heater was used to generate a temperature gradient inside a sample fluid. A DC heating power of 14 mW was used to provide a temperature gradient of 5000 K/m inside the sample fluid. The thermal conductivity was monitored at hot- and cold-side 3ω heaters with a spacing of 0.3 mm. Regarding the measurement results for the hot and cold 3ω heaters, when the temperature gradient was applied, the maximum thermal conductivity difference was determined to be 3% of the original value. By assuming that the thermo-diffusion of MWCNTs was entirely responsible for this difference, the Soret coefficient of the MWCNTs in the ethylene glycol was cal... [more]

Keywords: complex networks, network theory (graphs), systems interaction, power industry, power system security
In this paper, a case study is conducted based on the real data obtained from the local Distribution System Operator (DSO) of electrical energy. The analyzed network represents connections and high-voltage switchgears of 110 kV. Selected graph parameters—vertex degree distribution, the average vertex degree, the graph density, network efficiency, the clustering coefficient, the average path length, and the graph diameter were examined, taking into account that in the analysis, some nodes were removed due to the different failures. For each failure, the possible effects on network parameters were tested. As a final result, it was shown that in the analyzed case, the removal of only five nodes could cause a significant (almost four times) fall of graph efficiency. In turn, this means that the whole analyzed network cannot be considered as a fault-tolerant.
