Carrier-Phase-Shifted Rotation Pulse-Width-Modulation Scheme for Dynamic Active Power Balance of Modules in Cascaded H-Bridge STATCOMs
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active power balance, carrier rotation, carrier-phase-shifted, cascaded H-bridge, multilevel converter, static synchronous compensator
In the medium-voltage power distribution system, cascaded H-bridge (CHB) static synchronous compensators (STATCOMs) are widely utilized to solve power quality issues by injecting the controlled reactive current into the system. The carrier-phase-shifted (CPS) pulse-width-modulation (PWM) scheme is preferred for CHB-STATCOMs, because it can minimize the compensating current distortion and realize the relative active power balance among the H-bridge modules. This paper reveals the influence of the carrier phase difference on the module active power balance, and proposes a carrier rotation technique with a CPS-PWM scheme to address this drawback. The rotation rules were analyzed, and the rotation time was especially designed to enhance the robustness of the system. With the proposed method, the natural dynamic active power balance of each module could be achieved, and the capacitor voltage could maintain balance without the individual capacitor voltage control or the auxiliary circuits in... Comparative Analysis of Energy Consumption between Green Building Certified and Non-Certified Buildings in Korea
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: G-SEED, green building certification, LEED, site energy use intensity
Although interest in and the importance of green building certification have increased, it is difficult to determine how much less energy the buildings actually consume after obtaining sustainability related certification, such as LEED in the USA, and G-SEED in Korea. Focusing on building energy evaluation, we compared and analyzed the energy evaluation items of LEED and G-SEED. In addition, from the Korean public data portal site, this study investigated the annual site energy consumption (electricity and gas) per floor area of non-residential buildings that obtained G-SEED certification in Korea. The energy consumption of non-certified general buildings was compared with the energy consumption of certified buildings. As a result of examining 84 samples of this study, non-residential buildings with G-SEED certification showed energy use intensity that was at least (35.5 to 48.9)% lower than that of uncertified buildings.

Kinetic Characterization of Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Apple Pomace as Feedstock for a Sugar-Based Biorefinery
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: biomass pre-treatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, kinetics, waste biomass
The enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose from biomass feedstock in the sugar-based biorefinery chain is penalized by enzyme cost and difficulty to approach the theoretical maximum cellulose conversion degree. As a consequence, the process is currently investigated to identify the best operating conditions with reference to each biomass feedstock. The present work reports an investigation regarding the enzymatic hydrolysis of apple pomace (AP). AP is an agro-food waste largely available in Europe that might be exploited as a sugar source for biorefinery purposes. A biomass pre-treatment step was required before the enzymatic hydrolysis to make available polysaccharides chains to the biocatalyst. The AP samples were pre-treated through alkaline (NaOH), acid (HCl), and enzymatic (laccase) delignification processes to investigate the effect of lignin content and polysaccharides composition on enzymatic hydrolysis. Enzymatic hydrolysis tests were carried out using a commercial cocktail (Cellic... [more]

Biomass Thermochemical Conversion via Pyrolysis with Integrated CO2 Capture
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biomass, CaO solid sorbent, Carbon Dioxide Capture, chars, Hydrogen, physicochemical structure, pine wood, pyrolysis, Syngas
The presented work is focused on biomass thermochemical conversion with integrated CO2 capture. The main aim of this study was the in-depth investigation of the impact of pyrolysis temperature (500, 600 and 700 °C) and CaO sorbent addition on the chemical and physical properties of obtained char and syngas. Under the effect of the pyrolysis temperature, the properties of biomass chars were gradually changed, and this was confirmed by examination using thermal analysis, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and porosimetry methods. The chars were characterised by a noticeable carbon content (two times at 700 °C) resulting in a lower O/C ratio. The calculated combustion indexes indicated the better combustible properties of chars. In addition, structural morphology changes were observed. However, the increasing pyrolysis temperature resulted in changes of solid products; the differences of char properties were not significant in the range of 500 to 700 °C. Syngas was analysed... Lignocellulosic Ethanol in a Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Obligation System—A Case Study of Swedish Sawdust Based-Ethanol Production
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: economic performance, Ethanol, GHG emissions, life cycle assessment, lignocellulosic biomass, political incentives
A greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction obligation system has been implemented in the Swedish road transport sector to promote the use of biofuels. For transportation fuel suppliers to fulfil this obligation, the volume of biofuel required decreases with decreasing life cycle GHG emission for the biofuel, linking lower GHG emission to higher economic value. The aim of this study was to investigate how the economic competitiveness of a Swedish emerging lignocellulosic-based ethanol production system would be influenced by the reduction obligation. The life cycle GHG emission for sawdust-based ethanol was calculated by applying the method advocated in the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED II). The saving in GHG emissions, compared with fossil liquid transportation fuels, was 93% for a potential commercial production system in southern Sweden. This, in turn, will increase the competitiveness of sawdust-based ethanol compared to the mainly crop-based ethanol currently used in the Swedis... [more]

A Multicriteria Methodology to Select the Best Installation of Solar Thermal Power in a Family House
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: cost analysis, domestic hot water, energy consumption, environmental analysis, Solar Panels
Solar thermal power is nowadays one of the trendiest topics in the construction industry, and it represents a valuable energy source of heating that reduces energy consumption. As solar panels produce heating during the day and consumers demand calefaction during the whole day, we use standby tanks (for domestic hot water) and buffer tanks (for heating) for storage. The latest developments improved the efficiency and useful life while reducing the volume of tanks. So, the presented research work deals with analyzing the solar thermal power in a family house. This work presents a method to create a decision support system to compare solar energy systems in houses from economical, technical, availability, and environmental concerns. The weights of the criteria selected considering the analytical hierarchy process are computed. Parameters required for energy production calculations (location, temperature, etc.) and energy consumption (inhabitants, outdoor temperature, etc.) are summarized... [more]

Optimization of Electric Energy Sales Strategy Based on Probabilistic Forecasts
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: electricity market, probabilistic forecast, quantile regression, strategy optimization, value at risk
In this paper we propose an optimization scheme for a selling strategy of an electricity producer who in advance decides on the share of electricity sold on the day-ahead market. The remaining part is sold on the complementary (intraday/balancing) market. To this end, we use probabilistic forecasts of the future selling price distribution. Next, we find an optimal share of electricity sold on the day-ahead market using one of the three objectives: maximization of the overall profit, minimization of the sellers risk, or maximization of the median of portfolio values. Using data from the Polish day-ahead and balancing markets, we show that the assumed objective is achieved, as compared to the naive strategy of selling the whole produced electricity only on the day-ahead market. However, an increase of the profit is associated with a significant increase of the risk.

Regulated Emissions of Biogas Engines—On Site Experimental Measurements and Damage Assessment on Human Health
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biogas composition, biogas plant, engine emissions, health impact assessment
Despite biogas renewability, it is mandatory to experimentally assess its combustion products in order to measure their pollutants content. To this purpose, the Authors selected six in-operation biogas plants fed by different substrates and perform an on-site experimental campaign for measuring both biogas and engines exhausts composition. Firstly, biogas measured compositions are compared among them and with data available in literature. Then, biogas engines’ exhaust compositions are compared among them, with data available in literature and with measurements obtained from an engine characterised by the same design power but fuelled with natural gas. Finally, the Health Impact Assessment analysis is used to estimate the damage on human health caused by both biogas and natural gas engines emissions. Results show that biogas causes a damage on human health three times higher than the natural gas one. But, this approach does not consider biogas renewability. So, to include this important... [more]

Safe and Secure Control of Swarms of Vehicles by Small-World Theory
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: autonomous vehicle, complex networks, platoon control, small world theory, swarm behavior
The present paper investigates a new paradigm to control a swarm of moving individual vehicles, based on the introduction of a few random long-range communications in a queue dominated by short-range car-following dynamics. The theoretical approach adapts the small-world theory, originally proposed in social sciences, to the investigation of these networks. It is shown that the controlled system exhibits properties of higher synchronization and robustness with respect to communication failures. The considered application to a vehicle swarm shows how safety and security of the related traffic dynamics are strongly increased, diminishing the collision probability even in the presence of a hacker attack to some connectivity channels.

Investigation of Novel Composite Materials for Thermochemical Heat Storage Systems
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: composite pellets, heat storage materials, seasonal heat storage, thermochemical heat storage
Increasing energy prices make space heating more expensive every year in The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) member countries. Thermochemical heat storage systems (THSS) can be used to reduce residential energy consumption for space heating and to control humidity. Utilizing compressed thermochemical pellets as heat storage materials is a way to increase volumetric energy storage capacity and to improve the performance of the THSS. In this work, expanded natural graphite (ENG), activated carbon (AC), strontium bromide, and magnesium sulphate were mixed in different mass ratios and compressed under applied pressures in a range of 0.77 to 5.2 kN⋅mm−2 to form composite pellets with a diameter of 12 and 25 mm, respectively, and a thickness from 1.5 to 25 mm. These pellets were characterized using thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. Enhanced Flexible Algorithm for the Optimization of Slot Filling Factors in Electrical Machines
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: electrical motors, filling factor optimization, magnetic wire, optimization algorithm, sot filling factor, windings
The continuous development in the field of industrial automation and electric mobility has led to the need for more efficient electrical machines with a high power density. The improvement of electrical machines’ slot filling factors is one of the measures to satisfy these requirements. In recent years, this topic has aroused greater interest in the industrial sector, since the evolution of the winding technological manufacturing processes allows an economically sustainable realization of ordered winding arrangements, rather than random ones. Moreover, the manufacture of electrical machines’ windings must be preceded by an accurate design phase in which it is possible to evaluate the maximum slot filling factor obtainable for a given wire shape and for its dimensions. For this purpose, this paper presents an algorithmic approach for the evaluation of maximum slot filling factors in electrical machines under an ideal geometric premise. In particular, this algorithm has a greater degree... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: air pre-heater, circulating fluidized bed boiler, fly ash, Hg emission, particulates control device system
Mercury (Hg) emissions from coal-fired power plants are of increasing concern around the world. In this study, field tests were carried out to understand the Hg emission characteristics and its migration behaviors in a commercial CFB boiler unit with the electricity generation capacity of 25 MW. This boiler is equipped with one electrostatic precipitator (ESP) and two fabric filters (FFs) in series for removing particulates from the flue gas. The EPA 30B method was used for simultaneous flue gas Hg sampling at the inlet of the ESP and the outlet of the second FF. The Hg mass balance in the range of 104.07% to 112.87% was obtained throughout the CFB unit by measuring the Hg contents in the feed fuel, the fly ash and the bottom ash, as well as in the flue gas at the outlet of the particulate control device (PCD) system. More than 99% of Hg contained in the feed fuel was captured by the fly ash, whilst less than 1% of Hg was remained in the bottom ash or the flue gas after passing the PCD... [more]

Impact of Phase Locked Loop with Different Types and Control Dynamics on Resonance of DFIG System
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: doubly fed induction generator, phase locked loop, phase margin, resonance
In recent years, the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) operates in a weak grid, rather than a strong grid due to the high proportion of wind energy into the power grid. The impedance interaction between the DFIG system and series and parallel compensated weak grid might cause the subsynchronous resonance (SSR) and high frequency resonance (HFR) in the DFIG system, respectively. Phase locked loop (PLL) is a popular grid synchronization technique, and the high bandwidth PLL can cause resonance at middle frequencies in the DFIG system. However, the impact of PLL types and their controller dynamics on the resonance in the DFIG system are not adequately researched. The impact of the PLL controller with different types, such as synchronous reference frame (SRF) and Lead/Lag PLL, is studied in this paper to fill this gap. Additionally, an improved PLL is proposed, which can guarantee the high phase margin and decrease the likelihood of the resonance at middle frequencies in the DFIG syste... [more]

Assessment of Grid-Connected Wind Turbines with an Inertia Response by Considering Internal Dynamics
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: DC link voltage control, inertia provision, virtual synchronous machine
This paper presents a small-signal analysis of different grid side controllers for full power converter wind turbines with inertia response capability. In real wind turbines, the DC link controller, the drivetrain damping controller and the inertial response might present contradictory control actions in a close bandwidth range. This situation might lead to reduced control performance, increased component stress and non-compliance of connection agreements. The paper presents an analysis of the internal wind turbine dynamics by considering different grid-side converter control topologies: standard current control used in the wind industry, standard current control with inertia emulation capabilities and virtual synchronous machines. Comments are made on the similarities between each topology and the negative effects and limits, and possible remedies are discussed. Finally, the conclusion poses that the inclusion of a DC link voltage controller reduces the ability of a converter to respo... [more]

Unified Methodology to Identify the Potential Application of Seasonal Sorption Storage Technology
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: composite sorbents, operating conditions, seasonal thermal storage
In this study, the definition of a new methodology for a preliminary evaluation of the working boundary conditions under which a seasonal thermal energy storage (STES) system operates is described. The approach starts by considering the building features as well as the reference heating system in terms of solar thermal collectors’ technology, ambient heat sinks/source, and space heating distribution systems employed. Furthermore, it is based on a deep climatic analysis of the place where the STES needs to be installed, to identify both winter and summer operating conditions. In particular, the STES energy density is evaluated considering different space heating demands covered by the STES (ranging from 10% up to 60%). The obtained results demonstrate that this approach allows for the careful estimation of the achievable STES density, which is varies significantly both with the space heating coverage guaranteed by the STES as well as with the ambient heat source/sink that is employed in... Keywords: annual energy production, CECO, mooring system, offshore structure, sloped WEC, spar, tension leg platform, Wave Energy
Offshore locations present significant amounts of wave energy and free sea space, which could facilitate the deployment of larger numbers of wave energy converters (WECs) in comparison with nearshore regions. The present study aims to find a suitable design for an offshore floating version of CECO, a sloped motion WEC. For this purpose, a new design methodology is proposed in this paper for identifying and assessing possible floating configurations of CECO, which consists of four distinct set-ups obtained by varying the type of main supporting structure and the mooring system. Two options are based on spar designs and the other two on tension leg platform (TLP) designs. Based on outcomes of time-domain numerical calculations, the aforementioned configurations were assessed in terms of annual wave energy conversion and magnitude of mooring loads. Results indicate that a TLP configuration with an innovative mooring solution could increase the annual energy production by 40% with respect... [more]

Lab-Supported Hypothesis and Mathematical Modeling of Crack Development in the Fluid-Soaking Process of Multi-Fractured Horizontal Wells in Shale Gas Reservoirs
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fracture, gas, Modelling, shale, shut-in, soaking
The objective of this study is to develop a technique to identify the optimum water-soaking time for maximizing productivity of shale gas and oil wells. Based on the lab observation of cracks formed in shale core samples under simulated water-soaking conditions, shale cracking was found to dominate the water-soaking process in multi-fractured gas/oil wells. An analytical model was derived from the principle of capillary-viscous force balance to describe the dynamic process of crack propagation in shale gas formations during water-soaking. Result of model analysis shows that the formation of cracks contributes to improving well inflow performance, while the cracks also draw fracturing fluid from the hydraulic fractures and reduce fracture width, and consequently lower well inflow performance. The tradeoff between the crack development and fracture closure allows for an optimum water-soaking time, which will maximize well productivity. Reducing viscosity of fracturing fluid will speed up... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energetic complementarity, image processing algorithms, resource maps, solar energy, wind energy
Solar and wind energy systems, without storage, cannot satisfy variable load demands, but their combined use can help to solve the problem of the balance between generation and consumption. Energetic complementarity studies are useful to evaluate the viability of the use of two or more renewable energy sources with high variability in a specific interval of time in a determined region. In this paper, the monthly energetic complementarity study of solar and wind resources of Colombia is carried out. A novel approach to conduct the study is proposed. A dataset with the average monthly solar radiation and wind speed values is obtained from high-resolution images of renewable resources maps, using image processing algorithms. Then, the dataset is used to calculate the energetic complementarity of the sources employing the negative of the Pearson correlation coefficient. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: finned-tube gas cooler, Modelling, supercritical carbon dioxide, thermohydraulic performance
This paper investigates the thermohydraulic performance of finned-tube supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) gas coolers operating with refrigerant pressures near the critical point. A distributed modelling approach combined with the ε-NTU method has been developed for the simulation of the gas cooler. The heat transfer and pressure drop for each evenly divided segment are calculated using empirical correlations for Nusselt number and friction factor. The model was validated against test results and then used to investigate the influence of design and operating parameters on local and overall gas cooler performance. The results show that the refrigerant heat-transfer coefficient increases with decreasing temperature and reaches its maximum close to the pseudocritical temperature before beginning to decrease. The pressure drop increases along the flow direction with decreasing temperature. Overall performance results illustrate that higher refrigerant mass flow rate and decreasing finned-... [more]
