Improved Photovoltaic Self-Consumption in Residential Buildings with Distributed and Centralized Smart Charging of Electric Vehicles
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electric vehicles, electricity consumption, photovoltaics, residential buildings, self-consumption, smart charging
The integration of photovoltaic (PV) and electric vehicle (EV) charging in residential buildings has increased in recent years. At high latitudes, both pose new challenges to the residential power systems due to the negative correlation between household load and PV power production and the increase in household peak load by EV charging. EV smart charging schemes can be an option to overcome these challenges. This paper presents a distributed and a centralized EV smart charging scheme for residential buildings based on installed photovoltaic (PV) power output and household electricity consumption. The proposed smart charging schemes are designed to determine the optimal EV charging schedules with the objective to minimize the net load variability or to flatten the net load profile. Minimizing the net load variability implies both increasing the PV self-consumption and reducing the peak loads. The charging scheduling problems are formulated and solved with quadratic programming approach... [more]

Variability in Measured Real-World Operational Energy Use and Emission Rates of a Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: carbon dioxide emissions, carbon monoxide emissions, cold start, hydrocarbon emissions, light duty gasoline vehicle, nitrogen oxides emissions, portable emission measurement system
Compared to comparably sized conventional light duty gasoline vehicles (CLDGVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) may offer benefits of improved energy economy, reduced emissions, and the flexibility to use electricity as an energy source. PHEVs operate in either charge depleting (CD) or charge sustaining (CS) mode; the engine has the ability to turn on and off; and the engine can have multiple cold starts. A method is demonstrated for quantifying the real-world activity, energy use, and emissions of PHEVs, taking into account these operational characteristics and differences in electricity generation resource mix. A 2013 Toyota Prius plug-in was measured using a portable emission measurement system. Vehicle specific power (VSP) based modal average energy use and emission rates are inferred to assess trends in energy use and emissions with respect to engine load and for comparisons of engine on versus engine off, and cold start versus hot stabilized running. The results show th... [more]

Adaptive Droop Gain-Based Event-Triggered Consensus Reactive Power Sharing in Microgrids
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: adaptive droop gain, communication, consensus control, ETCP, microgrid, reactive power sharing
This paper proposes an adaptive droop gain-based consensus approach for reactive power sharing in microgrids (MGs) with the event triggered communication protocol (ETCP). A multi-agent system-based network is constructed to establish the communication with distributed generators (DGs) in MGs. An ETCP is proposed to reduce the communication among agents to save resources and improve system reliability, as the communication is only needed when the event triggered condition is fulfilled. A stability analysis is conducted to guarantee the existence of the equilibrium point and the freeness of the Zeno solution. Moreover, an adaptive droop gain is designed to reduce the impact of imbalanced feeder impedances. Four case studies are conducted to verify the effectiveness and performance of the proposed method. The simulation results show that the ETCP-based approach is capable of achieving power sharing consensus, communication reduction and shifting the information exchange mode based on the... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: electric pump, engine thermal management, fuel economy, Model Predictive Control, spark-ignition engine
Improvements in internal combustion engine efficiency can be achieved with proper thermal management. In this work, a simulation tool for the preliminary analysis of the engine cooling control is developed and a model-based controller, which enforces the coolant flow rate by means of an electrically driven pump is presented. The controller optimizes the coolant flow rate under each engine operating condition to guarantee that the engine temperatures and the coolant boiling levels are kept inside prescribed constraints, which guarantees efficient and safe engine operation. The methodology is validated at the experimental test rig. Several control strategies are analyzed during a standard homologation cycle and a comparison of the proposed methodology and the adoption of the standard belt-driven pump is provided. The results show that, according to the control strategy requirements, a fuel consumption reduction of up to about 8% with respect to the traditional cooling system can be achie... [more]

The Influence of the Injected Water on the Underground Coalbed Methane Extraction
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hydraulic fracturing, intrinsic permeability, methane adsorption, permeability evolution, relative permeability, water saturation
The increasing demand on coal production has led to the gradually increase of mining depth and more high methane mines, which bring difficulties in terms of coalbed methane (CBM) extraction. Hydraulic fracturing is widely applied to improve the production of CBM, control mine gas, and prevent gas outbursts. It improves coal bed permeability and accelerate desorption and migration of CBM. Even though the impacts of hydraulic fracturing treatment on the coal reservoirs are rare, negative effects could not be totally ignored. To defend this defect, the presented work aims to study the influence of water filtration on coal body deformation and permeability evolution. For this purpose, a simulation based finite element method was developed to build a solid-fluid coupled two-phase flow model using commercial software (COMSOL Multiphysics 5.4). The model was verified using production data from a long strike borehole from Wangpo coal mine in Shanxi Province, China. Several simulation scenarios... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Adsorption, inactive mass, mass ratio, resorption, specific thermal mass, thermal mass
The thermal masses of components influence the performance of many adsorption heat pump systems. However, typically when experimental adsorption systems are reported, data on thermal mass are missing or incomplete. This work provides original measurements of the thermal masses for experimental sorption heat exchanger hardware. Much of this hardware was previously reported in the literature, but without detailed thermal mass data. The data reported in this work are the first values reported in the literature to thoroughly account for all thermal masses, including heat transfer fluid. The impact of thermal mass on system performance is also discussed, with detailed calculation left for future work. The degree to which heat transfer fluid contributes to overall effective thermal mass is also discussed, with detailed calculation left for future work. This work provides a framework for future reporting of experimental thermal masses. The utilization of this framework will enrich the data av... [more]

Predicting Frequency, Time-To-Repair and Costs of Wind Turbine Failures
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Bayesian updating, Machine Learning, maintenance, reliability, wind turbine
Operation and maintenance (O&M) costs, and associated uncertainty, for wind turbines (WTs) is a significant burden for wind farm operators. Many wind turbine failures are unpredictable while causing loss of energy production, and may also cause loss of asset. This study utilized 753 O&M event data from 21 wind turbines operating in Germany, to improve the prediction of failure frequency and associated costs. We applied Bayesian updating to predict wind turbine failure frequency and time-to-repair (TTR), in conjunction to machine learning techniques for assessing costs associated with failures. We found that time-to-failure (TTF), time-to-repair and the cost of failures depend on operational and environmental conditions. High elevation (>100 m) of the wind turbine installation was found to increase both the probability of failures and probability of delayed repairs. Furthermore, it was determined that direct-drive turbines are more favorable at locations with high capacity factor (more... [more]

A Review on the Potential of Forest Biomass for Bioenergy in Australia
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Australia, bioenergy, biomass energy potential, emission, forest biomass
The use of forest biomass for bioenergy in Australia represents only 1% of total energy production but is being recognized for having the potential to deliver low-cost and low-emission, renewable energy solutions. This review addresses the potential of forest biomass for bioenergy production in Australia relative to the amount of biomass energy measures available for production, harvest and transport, conversion, distribution and emission. Thirty-Five Australian studies on forest biomass for bioenergy are reviewed and categorized under five hierarchical terms delimiting the level of assessment on the biomass potential. Most of these studies assess the amount of biomass at a production level using measures such as the allometric volume equation and form factor assumptions linked to forest inventory data or applied in-field weighing of samples to predict the theoretical potential of forest biomass across an area or region. However, when estimating the potential of forest biomass for bioe... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active and reactive power control, performance evaluation, power coupling, power distribution lines, power electronics converters, power generation control
This work presents a concise methodology for the calculation of assessment indexes regarding the coupling between active and reactive power control observed on distribution level converters. First, the reader is introduced to the concept of power coupling; when, where and how it appears in power control of converters. A brief summary of the theory and formulation behind it is also included, together with relevant literature. Then, the methodology for the assessment of active and reactive power control performance of any grid-connected converter is presented. The impact of small control disturbances during a testing procedure is monitored, analyzed and converted to meaningful indexes, so that the type and level of coupling is quantified without putting the converter or the grid at risk. The efficiency of the methodology to assess the type and level of coupling is verified experimentally. This is done by assessing several power control approaches with different level of decoupling effici... [more]

Noise Immunity Analysis and Improvement of dq Frame Based Open-Loop Phase Detection Scheme
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: coordinate transformation, noise immunity, open-loop phase detection (OPD), voltage phase
To improve the noise immunity of a dq frame based open-loop phase detection (OPD) under high-frequency noise grid conditions, this paper develops a detailed model to quantitatively evaluate the phase detection error and noise immunity. It is found that the OPD behaves differently in terms of noise immunity when the dq frame is in different angle positions with the grid voltage. When the grid voltage coincides with the d axis, the high-frequency noise has the smallest impact on the phase detection accuracy, and the OPD thus has the strongest noise immunity. Inspired by this conclusion, an improved OPD algorithm is proposed in this paper, which can effectively reduce the phase detection error by fine-tuning the rotation angle of the dq frame to ensure that the angle between the voltage vector and d axis is always close to 0. The improved OPD algorithm has a fast and precise character to detect the phase information with less error and is flexible for application. Under heavy noise grid c... [more]

Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: HVDC, maintenance, missing energy export, offshore wind energy, transmission system, voltage source converter (VSC)
For the grid connection of offshore wind farms today, in many cases a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) connection to the shore is implemented. The scheduled maintenance of the offshore and onshore HVDC stations makes up a significant part of the operational costs of the connected wind farms. The main factor for the maintenance cost is the lost income from the missing energy yield (indirect maintenance costs). In this study, we show an in-depth analysis of the used components, maintenance cycles, maintenance work for the on- and offshore station, and the risks assigned in prolonging the maintenance cycle of the modular multilevel converter (MMC). In addition, we investigate the potential to shift the start date of the maintenance work, based on a forecast of the energy generation. Our findings indicate that an optimized maintenance design with respect to the maintenance behavior of an HVDC energy export system can decrease the maintenance-related energy losses (indirect maintenance co... Non-Contact Measurement and Analysis of Trapped Charge Decay Rates for Cable Line Switching Transients
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: cable, field mill, overvoltage, sheath voltage limiter, SVL, transient, trapped charge
During reclosure of 275 kV cable circuits used for voltage control, excessive overvoltages were observed on the network. Such events cause onerous and costly failures. Transient simulations have shown that the normal voltage on its own cannot generate such excessive switching overvoltages. Initial investigations by the network operator pointed towards trapped charge on the unearthed as the cause of the failures. Measurement of these trapped charge voltages and their slow decay without interfering with the charge has, to the author’s knowledge, not been done before in an operational substation. This work introduces a technique to measure trapped charge at a 275 kV substation using the Electrostatic Field Mill. Since the electric field is a proxy measurement of surface voltage, field mills can also be used to measure voltage. In this paper, an on-site substation measurement setup using an electrostatic field mill has been developed for the non-contact measurement of trapped charge voltag... [more]

Investigating the System Behaviors of a 10 kW Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) Prototype Using Plunger Pump and Centrifugal Pump
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: centrifugal pump, organic Rankine cycle (ORC), plunger pump, pressure drop, system generating efficiency, temperature utilization rate
Based on a 10-kW organic Rankine cycle (ORC) experimental prototype, the system behaviors using a plunger pump and centrifugal pump have been investigated. The heat input is in the range of 45 kW to 82 kW. The temperature utilization rate is defined to appraise heat source utilization. The detailed components’ behaviors with the varying heat input are discussed, while the system generating efficiency is examined. The exergy destruction for the four components is addressed finally. Results indicated that the centrifugal pump owns a relatively higher mass flow rate and pump isentropic efficiency, but more power consumption than the plunger pump. The evaporator pressure drops are in the range of 0.45−0.65 bar, demonstrating that the pressure drop should be considered for the ORC simulation. The electrical power has a small difference using a plunger pump and a centrifugal pump, indicating that the electric power is insensitive on the pump types. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CFD numerical simulation, cross flow water turbine, transition turbulence model, unsteady analysis
In this study, three-dimensional transient numerical simulations of the flow around a cross flow water turbine of the type H-Darrieus are performed. The hydrodynamic characteristics and performance of the turbine are investigated by means of a time-accurate unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier−Stokes (URANS) commercial solver (ANSYS-Fluent v. 19) where the time dependent rotor-stator interaction is described by the sliding mesh approach. The transition shear stress transport turbulence model has been employed to represent the turbulent dynamics of the underlying flow. Computations are validated versus previous experimental work in terms of the turbine efficiency curve showing good agreement between numerical and experimental values. The behavior of the power and force coefficients as a function of turbine angular speed is analyzed. Moreover, visualizations and analyses of the instantaneous vorticity iso-surfaces developing at different blade rotational velocities are presented including a... [more]

Subject: Information Management
Keywords: acoustic emission, condition monitoring, diagnosing, drillship, mud pumps, valve damage
Although mud pumps are vital components of a drilling rig, their failures are frequent. The identification of technical condition of these high-pressure piston pumps is difficult. There are no reliable criteria for the assessment of mud pump condition. In this paper, faults of the pump valve module are identified by means of acoustic emission (AE) signals. The characteristics of these signals are extracted by wavelet packet signal processing. This method has been verified by experiments conducted on a NOV (National Oilwell Varco) -made triplex 14-P-220 mud pump (mounted in the drillship). The results show that the wavelet packet signal processing method can effectively extract the frequency band energy eigenvalues of the signals. Besides, some operational problems associated with high pressure piston mud pumps are presented. A non-invasive method for diagnosing the technical condition of such pumps is being developed at the Maritime University of Szczecin.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: FA, fly-ash-based geopolymer, geopolymer elasticity, GGBFS, mechanical properties, UPV
Geopolymers are considered to alternatives to Portland cement, providing an opportunity to exploit aluminosilicate wastes or co-products with promising performances in the construction sector. This research is aimed at investigating the strength of fly-ash-geopolymers of different ages. The effect of granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) as a partial replacement of fly ash (FA) on the tensile (ft) and compressive strength (fc), as well as the modulus of elasticity, is investigated. The main advantage of the developed geopolymer mixes containing GGBFS is their ability to set and harden at room temperature with no need for heating to obtain binding properties, reducing the energy consumption of their production processes. This procedure presents a huge advantage over binders requiring heat curing, constituting a significant energy savings and reduction of CO2 emissions. It is found that the development of strength strongly depends on the ratio of fly-ash to granulated blast furnace slag.... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: three-port bidirectional converter, three-winding coupled inductor
This study proposes a novel three-port bidirectional converter with a three-winding coupled inductor and applies it to a photovoltaic (PV) system to step up the PV system output to a dc bus or dc load while charging the battery. When the PV output is insufficient, battery voltage is stepped up to the dc bus voltage, and when the dc bus has excess energy, it is stepped down to charge the battery. Thus, a three-port bidirectional high step-up/step-down converter is achieved. A three-winding common core coupled inductor is designed and implemented in the converter, and a full-wave doubler circuit is used on the high-voltage side to achieve a high step-up effect. Power switches and diodes in the circuit are shared to achieve bidirectional operation. The output capacitors recover secondary-side leakage inductance energy in the step-up mode, and the third winding can be used to recover primary-side leakage inductance energy to reduce the voltage spike on switching in order to improve the con...
