Renewable energy production is gaining importance in the context of global climate changes. However, in some countries other aspects increasing the role of renewable energy production are also present. Such a country is Ukraine, which is not self-sufficient in energy supply and whose dependency on poorly diversified import of energy carriers regularly leads to political tensions and has socio-economic implications. Production of agricultural biogas seems to be a way to both slow down climatic changes and increase energy self-sufficiency by replacing or complementing conventional sources of energy. Resonant Combustion Start Considering Potential Energy of Free-Piston Engine Generator

Free-piston engine generators without a crank mechanism are expected to be used in series hybrid vehicles because of their lower losses. The series hybrid system requires a low starting thrust because the engine frequently starts depending on the battery state. This study clarifies the effectiveness of the constant thrust resonance starting method that utilizes the compression pressure of the engine and the spring thrust. The piston must pass the combustion starting point with a predetermined speed to start combustion. Herein, we present a thrust setting method that uses the energy state diagram to optimize the velocity at the combustion start point. A simulation is performed assuming output when mounted on a vehicle. Consequently, the simulation results show that the maximum thrust can be reduced by more than 90% compared to that without resonance. Aerodynamic Analysis of Coning Effects on the DTU 10 MW Wind Turbine Rotor

The size of wind turbine rotors is still rapidly increasing, though many technical challenges emerge. Novel rotor designs emerge to satisfy this up-scale trend, such as downwind load-aligned concepts, which orients the loads along the blade spanwise to greatly decrease the bending moments at the root. As the studies on the aerodynamics of these rotor concepts using 3D body-fitted mesh are very limited, this paper establishes different cone configurations based on the DTU 10 MW reference rotor and conducts a series of simulations. It is found that the cone angle and the distance from the blade section to the tip vortex are two deterministic factors on conning. Upwind rotors have larger power output, less thrust, smaller wake deficit, and smaller influencing area than downwind rotors of the same size, which provides superior aerodynamic priority and benefits wind farm design. This work contributes to the understanding of mechanisms that lead to increased carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations in gas turbine combustion systems. Large-eddy simulations (LES) of a full scale high pressure prototype Siemens gas turbine combustor at three staged part load operating conditions are presented, demonstrating the ability to predict carbon monoxide pollutants from a complex technical system by investigating sources of incomplete CO oxidation. Analytically reduced chemistry is applied for the accurate pollutant prediction together with the dynamic thickened flame model. LES results show that carbon monoxide emissions at the probe location are predicted in good agreement with the available test data, indicating two operating points with moderate pollutant levels and one operating point with CO concentrations below 10 ppm. Agricultural activities produce an estimated amount of 32.7 MToe/year of residues in EU countries. They are mostly disposed in landfills, incinerated without any control, or abandoned in fields, causing severe impacts on human health and environment. Rice is one of the most consumed crops worldwide with an annual production of 782 million tons according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations database. In this context, the EU-funded project LIFE LIBERNITRATE promotes the use of renewable residual sources (i.e., rice straw) to obtain new materials with an added value. Nanoparticles have been thoroughly investigated in the last few decades because they have many beneficial and functional qualities. Their capability to enhance and manipulate light absorption, thermal conductivity, and heat transfer efficiency has attracted significant research attention. This systematic and comprehensive work is a critical review of research on the photothermal energy conversion performance of various nanofluids as well as the recent advances in several engineering applications. Different nanofluids used in the photothermal energy conversion process were compared to identify the suitable applications of each nanofluid in thermal systems. An analysis of the previous investigations based on experimental and numerical studies has established that nanomaterials have the potential to increase the efficiency of solar thermal systems.
PCB-Embedded Spiral Pattern Pick-Up Coil Current Sensor for WBG Devices

This paper proposes a current sensor for wide bandgap (WBG) devices. The current of a power semiconductor device is mainly measured using a Rogowski coil, an active current transformer, and a coaxial shunt resistor. The Rogowski coil and active current transformer are not suitable for the current measurement of surface mount WBG devices due to their operating principle. The coaxial shunt resistor causes parasitic inductance. Since WBG devices are more sensitive to parasitic inductance than silicon devices, parasitic inductance may affect circuit operation. To overcome these problems, this paper proposes a printed circuit board (PCB)-embedded spiral pattern pick-up coil current measurement for WBG devices. The proposed pick-up coil has high mutual inductance compared to the conventional pick-up coil, so the measurement sensitivity is high. Coolants are widely used to dissipate grinding heat in conventional grinding. This process, however, is not satisfactory as coolants often lose efficacy in grinding due to film boiling and can result in adverse health and environment effects. The present paper put forward the concept of a rotating heat pipe grinding wheel, attempting to reduce or eliminate the coolant amount and realize green machining. The heat transfer performance of rotating heat pipe grinding wheel was studied by using volume of fluid method in ANSYS/FLUENT. The influence of the input heat flux, filling ratio and rotational speed were investigated by a simulation method. Cation-exchange capacity (CEC) measurements are widely used to quantify the smectite content in altered rocks. Within this study, we measure the CEC of drill cuttings in four wells from three different high-temperature geothermal areas in Iceland. The CEC measurements in all four wells show similar depth/temperature related pattern, and when comparing the CEC with electrical resistivity logs, we could show that the low resistivity zone coincides with CEC values >5 meq/100 g. The measurements show, in general, an exponential decrease of the CEC with increasing depth. At the facies boundary between the mixed-layer clay and epidote-chlorite zone, the CEC reaches a steady state at about 5 meq/100 g and below that it only decreases slightly within a linear trend with increasing depth. We describe how recent EU regulation affects demand response (DR) and highlight some of the remaining regulatory challenges from a legal and economic viewpoint. With the Clean Energy Package (CEP), the EU has opted for a fully market-based, consumer-centered approach for DR. The development of business models and products is left to a large extent to market forces. However, to enable the efficient development of those DR markets, network regulation has to adapt. (1) Network tariffs have to become more cost-reflective to provide correct incentives to market participants. The Impact of Industry on European Union Emissions Trading Market—From Network Perspective

This study pioneers to investigate the impact of industry on the European Union carbon trading market based on network perspective. All the accounts in the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) are summarized at the industry level, and then the trading relationship between industries is constructed in the network layout. Based on this network, the centrality of each industry is measured—the industries of electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (EGSAS), bank, broker, exchange, and wholesale trade excluding motor vehicles and motorcycles (WTEM) have higher centrality. Finally, the impact of industry on the evolution of networks is analyzed, Findings show that the financial intermediaries play important roles at the beginning of each phase, while their influences on the network will decrease as the market goes on. On the contrary, influences of some other industries like WTEM are gradually increasing.

In this paper, a hybrid system integrating a fixed breakwater and an oscillating buoy type wave energy converter (WEC) is introduced. The energy converter is designed to extract the wave power by making use of the wave-induced heave motions of the three floating pontoons in front of the fixed breakwater. A preliminary experimental study is carried out to discuss the hydrodynamic performance of the hybrid system under the action of regular waves. This study is concerned with the national transposition of the European Renewable Energy Directive into Austrian law. The objective is to estimate the economic viability for residential customers when participating in a renewable energy community (REC), focused on PV electricity sharing. The developed simulation model considers the omission of certain electricity levies as well as the obligatory proximity constraint being linked to grid levels, thus introducing a stepwise reduction of per-unit grid charges as an incentive to keep the inner-community electricity transfer as local as possible. Results show that cost savings in residential RECs cover a broad range from 9 EUR/yr to 172 EUR/yr. The lowest savings are gained by customers without in-house PV systems, while owners of a private PV system make the most profits due to the possibility of selling as well as buying electricity within the borders of the REC. This article focuses on modeling of an Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Generator (AFPMG). The authors analyzed selected variants of disk generators, including coreless stator constructions and with iron core ones, also taking into account the Permanent Magnet (PM) arrangement in order to show the way to obtain the optimal machine characteristics based on analytical equations. In addition to the full model, which takes into account the higher harmonics of the magnetic field distribution, the paper presents a simplified mathematical model developed for generator operation cases such as standalone, connected to a 3-phase power grid and loaded with a diode rectifier. The analytical and finite-element method (FEM) calculations were performed as well as laboratory tests to confirm the correctness of presented model assumptions.

The COVID-19 pandemic rapidly reoriented the lives of billions of people across the globe toward working, learning, and subsisting from home. This paper examines the consequences of this disruption of electricity use in Australian households. Using high-frequency electricity monitoring from 491 houses and per-circuit monitoring and in-depth interviews with 17 households, the paper (1) compares changes in energy use before and during COVID-19 lockdown, (2) quantifies the key drivers of changes in energy use experienced by households during lockdown, and (3) tracks households’ interactions with energy use feedback. In this study, five fuels including pure diesel (B0), pure palm oil biodiesel (B100), and their blends (B10, B20, and B30) were investigated in relation to soot particle distribution and regulated and unregulated emission characteristics in a common rail direct injection (CRDI) diesel engine. The results indicated that CO, hydrocarbon (HC), and particulate matter (PM) regulated emissions were effectively controlled to a very low level by combining the addition of palm oil biodiesel (POB) to diesel with optimized engine operating conditions. Paper filters and TEM grids were used to capture the diesel particles. This paper provides an analysis of a designed underground station infrastructure for vacuum tube high-speed trains for the planned mega transport hub in Poland. The potential of integrating the infrastructure of the station building with sealed low-pressure tubes system is analyzed. The Solidarity Transport Hub Poland is a planned mega hub to be located in Baranów Municipality, Poland, which is comprised of an airport, an airport city, a road, and railway infrastructure. It is to be integrated with the first route of vactrains in Poland. The aim of this paper is to design a hyperloop station building adequate for the advanced technology of low-pressure high-speed trains. Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) from heavy oil reservoirs is challenging. High oil viscosity, high mobility ratio, inadequate sweep, and reservoir heterogeneity adds more challenges and severe difficulties during any EOR method. Foam injection showed potential as an EOR method for challenging and heterogeneous reservoirs containing light oil. However, the foams and especially polymer enhanced foams (PEF) for heavy oil recovery have been less studied. This study aims to evaluate the performance of CO2 foam and CO2 PEF for heavy oil recovery and CO2 storage by analyzing flow through porous media pressure profile, oil recovery, and CO2 gas production. Foam bulk stability tests showed higher stability of PEF compared to that of surfactant-based foam both in the absence and presence of heavy crude oil.
