Subject: Other
Keywords: mutual inductance, pancake coils, planar coils, wireless power transfer
The computation of self and mutual inductances of coils is a classic problem of electrical engineering. The accurate modeling of coupled coils has received renewed interest with the spread of wireless power transfer systems. This problem has been quite well addressed for coplanar or perfectly coaxial coils but it is known that the misalignment conditions easily lead to a sharp decrease in the efficiency. Hence, it is crucial to take misalignment into account in order to properly design the overall wireless power transfer system. This work presents a study to compute analytically the mutual inductance of non-coaxial pancake coils with parallel axes. The accuracy of the proposed methodology is tested by comparison with the numerical results obtained using the tool Fast-Henry. Then, a wireless power transfer system, comprising a full bridge inverter is considered, showing the impact of the misalignment on the coupling between two pancake coils and, thus, between the source and the load.

Induction machines have been key components in the industrial sector for decades, owing to different characteristics such as their simplicity, robustness, high energy efficiency and reliability. However, due to the stress and harsh working conditions they are subjected to in many applications, they are prone to suffering different breakdowns. Among the most common failure modes, bearing failures and stator winding failures can be found. To a lesser extent, High Resistance Connections (HRC) have also been investigated. Motor power connection failure mechanisms may be due to human errors while assembling the different parts of the system. Moreover, they are not only limited to HRC, there may also be cases of opposite wiring connections or open-phase faults in motor power terminals. Because of that, companies in industry are interested in diagnosing these failure modes in order to overcome human errors. This article presents a machine learning (ML) based fault diagnosis strategy to help m... [more]

In this study, we use the data of Polish typical meteorological years and 15 transposition models to obtain global solar irradiance on sloped surfaces to calculate solar irradiance on external building partitions, solar gains, heating demands, and primary nonrenewable energy for heating and domestic hot water (EPH+W) of two typical Polish residential buildings, each for two variants in five locations. In relation to TMYs, annual solar gains were lower by −31% and −36% on average in a single and multifamily building, respectively, and the annual heating demands increased by 9% and 16%, respectively. Consequently, averaged EPH+W in relation to TMYs rose by 1.4 kWh/m2 and 4.5 kWh/m2, respectively. The mean differences between TMYs and the new method from the recently published EN-ISO 52010 standard for test Building 1 were 1.6 and 1.2 kWh/m2, for Variants 1 and 2, respectively. Similarly, for test Building 2, the mean differences were 5.1 kWh/m2 and 3.9 kWh/m2, respectively. This means th... [more]

Finite Control-Set Model Predictive Control (FCS-MPC) appears as an interesting alternative to regulate multiphase electric drives, thanks to inherent advantages such as its capability to include new restrictions and fast-transient response. Nevertheless, in industrial applications, FCS-MPC is typically discarded to control multiphase motors because the absence of a modulation stage produces a high harmonic content. In this regard, multi-vectorial approaches are an innovative solution to improve the electric drive performance taking advantage of the implicit modulator flexibility of Model Predictive Control (MPC) strategies. This work proposes the definition of a new multi-vectorial set of control actions formed by a couple of adjacent large voltage vectors and a null voltage vector with an adaptative application ratio. The combination of two large voltage vectors provides minimum x-y current injection whereas the application of a null voltage vector reduces the active voltage producti... [more]

The gas−liquid hydrodynamics and mass transfer were studied in a concentric tube internal jet-loop airlift reactor with a conical bottom. Comparing with a standard design, the gas separator was equipped with an adjustable deflector placed above the riser. The effect of riser superficial gas velocity uSGR on the total gas holdup εGT, homogenization time tH, and overall volumetric liquid-phase mass transfer coefficient kLa was investigated in a laboratory bioreactor, of 300 mm in inner diameter, in a two-phase air−water system and three-phase air−water−PVC−particle system with the volumetric solid fraction of 1% for various deflector clearances. The airlift was operated in the range of riser superficial gas velocity from 0.011 to 0.045 m/s. For the gas−liquid system, when reducing the deflector clearance, the total gas holdup decreased, the homogenization time increased twice compared to the highest deflector clearance tested, and the overall volumetric mass transfer coefficient slightly... It is effective to open the bus-coupler circuit breaker in case of a short-circuit fault. A fast vacuum circuit breaker (FVCB) is an ideal bus-coupler circuit breaker due to its high velocity. The objective of this study was to develop and test a 252 kV/2500 A-40 kA multi-break bus-coupler FVCB. The 252 kV FVCB contained 12 FVCB units. Each phase consisted of four FVCB units connected in series. Each FVCB unit had an electromagnetic repulsion mechanism with an average opening velocity reaching 6.5 m/s. Test results showed the opening time was 1.11 ± 0.08 ms. The capacitance of the voltage grading capacitor of each break was determined to be 10 nF. The prototype 252 kV bus-coupler FVCB passed all partial test duties according to the IEC 62271-100: 2008 and IEC 62271-1: 2007 standards, which include an insulation test and a terminal fault test among others. A 252 kV/2500 A-40 kA multi-break bus-coupler FVCB can be used to quickly cut off a short-circuit fault and effectively limit a shor... [more]

In this study, a method for testing the aging of silicone rubber insulators using terahertz waves in the 0.17−0.22 THz frequency band is proposed, aiming at the problem of online non-destructive testing of the aging degree of composite insulators. The relationship between the aging degree of silicone rubber composite insulators and the relative dielectric constant was studied through first-principles calculations and molecular chain scission models. In addition, the electromagnetic model of the terahertz signal incident on the silicon rubber sheet was simulated and the relationship between the aging degree of the silicon rubber and the terahertz input return loss was obtained. Eleven insulator samples with different degrees of aging were selected. In these samples, the degree of aging was calibrated according to the degree of surface deterioration and the average partial discharge voltage. The terahertz return loss measurement experiment was performed after that. Finally, the results o... [more]

DC-connected parallel inverter systems are gaining popularity in industrial applications. However, such parallel systems generate excess current ripple (harmonics) at the DC-link due to harmonic interactions between the inverters in addition to the harmonics from the PWM switching. These DC-link harmonics cause the failure of fragile components such as DC-link capacitors. This paper proposes an interleaving scheme to minimize the current harmonics induced in the DC-link of such a system. First, the optimal phase-shift angle for the carrier signal is investigated using the analytical equations, which provides maximum capacitor current ripple cancellation (i.e., at the main switching frequency harmonic component). These optimally phase-shifted switching cycles lead to variations of the output current ripples, which, when summed together at the DC-link, result in the cancellations of the DC-link current ripples. The results show that when the carrier waves of the two inverters are phase-s... [more]

A quasi-Z-source inverter (qZSI) is a single-stage inverter that enables a boost of the input dc voltage through the utilization of a so-called shoot-through state (STS). Generally, the efficiency of the qZSI depends on the utilized STS injection method to a significant extent. This paper presents a novel method of STS injection, called the zero-sync method, in which the STS occurrence is synchronized with the beginning of the zero switching states (ZSSs) of the three-phase sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM). In this way, compared to the conventional STS injection method, the total number of switchings per transistor is reduced. The ZSSs are detected by utilizing the SPWM pulses and the logic OR gates. The desired duration of the STS is implemented by utilizing the LM555CN timer. The laboratory setup of the three-phase qZSI in the stand-alone operation mode was built to compare the proposed zero-sync method with the conventional STS injection method. The comparison was carried ou... [more]

This study describes the development of the world’s smallest interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) to increase the torque density of micromotors. The research evaluates the feasibility of the miniaturization of IPMSM since recent studies in this area focus on medium to large size compressor and traction motor applications. The standard-type and spoke-type IPMSM were selected for ease of micro machining. In order to surpass the performance of an inset motor of the same size used in previous research, the interior motors were designed with a different slot pole number, permanent magnet shape and rotor structure. Two types of interior motors were manufactured and tested to compare their performance. It was shown that the spoke-type interior motor had a better output torque, while the standard-type interior motor had a lower torque ripple, and both motors matched the specifications of commercially available motors. To achieve a higher torque density, the IPMSM designs increas... [more]

Ensuring a protection scheme in a DC distribution system is more difficult to achieve against pole-to-ground faults than in AC distribution system because of the absence of zero crossing points and low line impedance. To complement the major obstacle of limiting the fault current, several compositions have been proposed related to mechanical switching and solid-state switching. Among them, solid-state circuit breakers (SSCBs) are considered to be a possible solution to limit fast fault current. However, they may cause problems in circuit complexity, reliability, and cost-related troubles because of the use of multiple power semiconductor devices and additional circuit configuration to commutate the current. This paper proposes a SSCB with a coupled inductor (SSCB-CI) that has a symmetrical configuration. The circuit is comprised of passive components like commutation capacitors, a CI, and damping resistors. Thus, the proposed SSCB-CI offers the advantages of a simple circuit configurat... [more]

The main objective of this paper is to demonstrate the effectiveness of increasing the thermal capacity of a residential building by using traditional building materials to reduce the risk of its excessive overheating during intense heat waves in a temperate climate. An additional objective is to show that the use of this single passive measure significantly reduces the risk of overheating in daytime rooms, but also, though to a much lesser extent, in bedrooms. Increasing the thermal mass of the room from light to a medium heavy reduced the average maximum daily temperature by 2.2K during the first heat wave and by 2.6K during the other two heat waves. The use of very heavy construction further reduced the average maximum temperature for the heat waves analyzed by 1.4K, 1.2K and 1.7K, respectively, giving a total possible reduction in maximum daily temperatures in the range of 3.6 °C, 3.8 °C and 4.3 °C. Compressed air energy storage is a well-used technology for application in high voltage power systems, but researchers are also investing efforts to minimize the cost of this technology in medium and low voltage power systems. Integration of this energy storage requires a robust control of the power electronic converter to control the power injection due to the dynamic behavior of the system. The conventional linear control design requires a thorough knowledge of the system parameters, but the uncertain disturbances caused by the mechanical properties of the energy storage is neglected in the design and the system fails in presence of such instances. In this paper an adaptive control-based boost converter and sliding mode control-based three phase inverter for a grid integrated compressed air energy storage system of up to 1 kW has been presented that can mitigate any uncertain disturbances in the system without prior knowledge of the system parameters. HV bushings are an important part of the equipment of large power transformers, responsible for their many serious (including catastrophic) failures. Their proper exploitation needs to apply correct and reliable diagnostics, e.g., the use of dielectric response methods, that take into account their specific construction and working conditions. In this article, based on laboratory tests carried out on a real bushing, it has been shown that the significant temperature distribution within its core significantly affects the shape of the dielectric response of its insulation; therefore, the approach to its modeling should be changed. Hence, a new method for interpreting the results, using the so-called the 2XY model, is proposed. Subsequently, based on the measurements made on the insulators in operation, a new modeling method was verified. In conclusion, it can be stated that the 2XY model significantly improves the reliability of the dielectric response analysis, which should be confirmed... [more]

The development of new control techniques for multiphase induction machines (IMs) has become a point of great interest to exploit the advantages of these machines compared to three-phase topology, for example, the reduced phase currents and lower harmonic contents. One of the most analyzed techniques is the model-based predictive current control (MPC) with a finite control set. This technique presents high x−y currents because of the application of one switching state throughout the whole sampling period. Nevertheless, it is one of the most used due to its excellent dynamic response. To overcome the aforementioned drawbacks, new techniques called virtual vectors have been developed, but although there are several articles with experimental results, the algorithm for implementing the technique has not been appropriately described. This document provides a clear and detailed explanation for algorithm implementation of virtual vectors through two proposed variants VV4 and VV11, in a six-p... [more]

Keywords: BLDC motor, rotor position estimation, sensor misalignment
This article presents an estimation method of the BLDC rotor position with asymmetrically arranged Hall sensors. Position estimation is necessary to control the motor by methods other than block commutation. A sinusoidal control method was selected for the research, which significantly reduces torque ripples and acoustic noise and is quite simple to implement. Inaccurate performance of the elements determining the position of the BLDC motor rotor causes a large error in the position estimation and has a negative impact on the operation of the drive controlled in this way. Using the developed control algorithms, it is possible to correctly determine the mechanical position of the rotor even for multi-pole motors. The proposed method is relatively easy to implement and does not require modification of control systems, being limited to changes only in the software of such devices. The tests of the actual system clearly show the usefulness of such a control method and its effectiveness.
