The Impact of M&As on the Competitive Positioning of European Energy Firms and Market Power Concentration on EU National Energy Markets

By studying M&A deals completed by European energy and power companies between 2002 and 2021, the paper inquires into the impact of corporate consolidation on the competitive positioning of individual energy firms and the concentration of market power on the national energy markets in the EU countries. Our evidence suggests that the European energy market may be moving towards a greater concentration of market power as market leaders are shown to primarily acquire their peers from national markets, while outsiders are more likely to diversify into non-energy sectors, which may further endanger their competitive positioning in the future. We also find that M&As allow energy and power companies to substantially increase their market share within national markets. The said impact is stronger in case of cross-border deals, including those within and outside of the EU. There has been growing interest in using underground locations for applications in various fields, including research. In Poland, for several years, attempts have been made to build an underground laboratory. For this purpose, selecting an appropriate location requires a detailed analysis of the level of natural radioactivity. The present study presents detailed characteristics of the natural background radiation in close vicinity to shaft L-VI of the Lubin mine, at the depth of 910 m (2275 m w.e.). The in situ measurement of the photon flux in the 7−3150 keV energy range was equal to 8.08 ± 0.90 cm−2s−1, and the gamma-ray dose rate of 0.070 ± 0.010 µSv/h with the highest contribution from 40K and 214B isotopes. The thermal neutron flux measured using helium counters was equal to 4.2 ± 0.9 × 10−6 cm−2s−1. Estimating porous media properties is a vital component of geosciences and the physics of porous media. Until now, imaging techniques have focused on methodologies to match image-derived flows or geomechanical parameters with experimentally identified values. Less emphasis has been placed on the compromise between image processing techniques and the consequences on topological and morphological characteristics and on computed properties such as permeability. The effects of some of the most popular image processing techniques (filtering and segmentation) available in open source on 3D X-ray Microscopy (micro-XRM) images are qualitatively and quantitatively discussed. We observe the impacts of various filters such as erosion-dilation and compare the efficiency of Otsu’s method of thresholding and the machine-learning-based software Ilastik for segmentation.

Clay minerals are an important part of the mud shale reservoir, and their type of content has a great impact on the hydration of the formation. The hydration of clay minerals causes a decrease in drilling fluid performance, an increase in pore pressure, and a decrease in rock strength, leading to wellbore wall collapse. Therefore, it is important to study the influence of clay mineral hydration on well-wall stability. In this paper, we analyze the hydration process of clay minerals qualitatively and quantitatively by simulating the mineral clay fraction and the effect of the change in cations on their hydration and clarify the difference in the hydration of different clay minerals. Traffic calming measures (TCMs) are implemented in urban areas to reduce vehicles’ speed and, generally speaking, results are obtained. However, speed is still a problem in rural roads crossing small villages without a bypass and with short-length urban areas, since drivers do not normally reduce their speed for that short segment. Hence, various TCM can be installed. It is necessary to maintain a calm area in these short segments to improve road safety, especially for pedestrian aiming to cross the road, and to save combustible by avoiding a constant increase-decrease of speed. Four villages were selected to evaluate the efficiency of radar speed cameras and panels indicating vehicle’s speed. In this paper, an automatic algorithm for the detection of subsidence areas in SAR interferograms is proposed. It is based on the analysis of spatial distribution of the interferogram phase, and its coherence and entropy. The developed method was tested for differential interferograms generated on the basis of Sentinel-1 SAR images covering mining areas in South Poland. The obtained results were compared with those achieved using a method based on circular Gabor filters. Performed analysis revealed that the detection rate for the proposed method varied from 34% to 83%. It is an improved method based on Gabor filters that achieved a detection rate from 30% to 53%.

The Upper Cretaceous complex in the central part of the Carpathian Foreland (southern Poland) is relatively poorly recognized and described. Elastic wave propagation in partially saturated reservoir rocks induces fluid flow in multi-scale pore spaces, leading to wave anelasticity (velocity dispersion and attenuation). The propagation characteristics cannot be described by a single-scale flow-induced dissipation mechanism. To overcome this problem, we combine the White patchy-saturation theory and the squirt flow model to obtain a new anelasticity theory for wave propagation. We consider a tight sandstone Qingyang area, Ordos Basin, and perform ultrasonic measurements at partial saturation and different confining pressures, where the rock properties are obtained at full-gas saturation. The comparison between the experimental data and the theoretical results yields a fairly good agreement, indicating the efficacy of the new theory.

Since the middle of the 20th century many any buildings were built without any energy standards and still have a comparably poor energy quality. To obtain an overview of the current thermal quality of buildings in a whole city district, it may be promising to work with thermographic images obtained by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). Aerial thermography represents a fast and cost-efficient approach compared to traditional terrestrial thermography. Microcrack Porosity Estimation Based on Rock Physics Templates: A Case Study in Sichuan Basin, China

Low porosity-permeability structures and microcracks, where gas is produced, are the main characteristics of tight sandstone gas reservoirs in the Sichuan Basin, China. In this work, an analysis of amplitude variation with offset (AVO) is performed. Based on the experimental and log data, sensitivity analysis is performed to sort out the rock physics attributes sensitive to microcrack and total porosities. The Biot−Rayleigh poroelasticity theory describes the complexity of the rock and yields the seismic properties, such as Poisson’s ratio and P-wave impedance, which are used to build rock-physics templates calibrated with ultrasonic data at varying effective pressures. The templates are then applied to seismic data of the Xujiahe formation to estimate the total and microcrack porosities, indicating that the results are consistent with actual gas production reports.
Silica Sinter and the Evolution of Hot Springs in the Alvord/Pueblo Valleys, Southeast Oregon, USA

Hot springs in the Alvord/Pueblo valleys in southeastern Oregon are analogous to Basin-and-Range hydrothermal systems where heat source and permeable pathways are met through crustal thinning. Silica sinter deposition at Mickey Springs, Alvord Valley, predates the late Pleistocene high stand of pluvial Lake Alvord. At Borax Lake, Pueblo Valley, sinter deposition occurred during the Holocene. This study examines the evolution of springs at Mickey Springs, where three morphologies of sinter are present: (1) basalt clasts surrounded by sinter in interbedded conglomerate and sandstone, (2) pool-edge and aprons of sinter surrounding depressions (12−32 m diameter), and (3) quaquaversal sinter mounds with pool-edge sinter. HVAF (High Velocity Air Flame) flame spraying can generate supersonic high-temperature gas jets, enabling thermal spraying at unprecedented speeds. However, there is a problem with the energy cost of this device. This study focused on combustors that used cheap liquid fuel (kerosene) as the fuel for HVAF. The nature of carbonate deposition as well as diagenetic processes can cause the development of unique geological features such as cavities, vugs and fractures. These are called karsts. Encountering karsts while drilling can lead to serious consequences such as severe mud losses, drops of bottom hole assembly and gas kicks. To improve drilling safety in intervals of karstification, it is important to detect karsts as early as possible, preferably in advance. In this paper, we review methods and technologies that can be used for the prediction and early detection of karsts. In particular, we consider acoustic, resistivity, seismic and drilling-data methods. In addition to the inventions and technologies developed and published over the past 40 years, this paper identifies the advantages, limitations and gaps of these existing technologies and discusses the most promising methods for karst detection and prediction.

This paper presents the results of a study conducted to determine the dynamic power of a hydraulic leg. The hydraulic leg is the basic element that maintains the position of a powered roof support. It is located in the structure between the canopy and the floor base. The analysis assumes that its power must be greater than the energy of the impact of the rock mass. The energy of the rock mass is generated by tremors caused mainly by mining exploitation. Advances in remote data acquisition techniques have contributed to the flooding of society with spatial data sets and information. Widely available spatial data sets, including digital terrain models (DTMs) from aerial laser scanning (ALS) data, are finding more and more new applications. The article analyses and compares the heights of the 14 highest peaks of the Polish Carpathians derived from different data sources. Global navigation satellite system (GNSS) geodetic measurements were used as reference. The comparison primarily involves ALS data, and selected peaks’ GNSS measurements carried out with Xiaomi Mi 8 smartphones were also compared. Effects of Bent Outlet on Characteristics of a Fluidic Oscillator with and without External Flow

A fluidic oscillator with a bent outlet nozzle was investigated to find the effects of the bending angle on the characteristics of the oscillator with and without external flow. Unsteady aerodynamic analyses were performed on the internal flow of the oscillator with two feedback channels and the interaction between oscillator jets and external flow on a NACA0015 airfoil. The analyses were performed using three-dimensional unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with a shear stress transport turbulence model. The bending angle was tested in a range of 0−40°. The results suggest that the jet frequency increases with the bending angle for high mass flow rates, but at a bending angle of 40°, the oscillation of the jet disappears. The pressure drop through the oscillator increases with the bending angle for positive bending angles. Fear of the COVID-19 Pandemic and Social Distancing as Factors Determining the Change in Consumer Payment Behavior at Retail and Service Outlets

The aim of this study was to identify the factors inducing customers to choose cashless payments made with payment cards at retail and service outlets during the COVID-19 pandemic. We identified factors that are crucial for consumers’ functioning under pandemic conditions, but which have so far been neglected in research. The estimated logit model indicates that the variables significantly influencing the more frequent choice of payment cards at retail outlets are related to the fear of infection and perception of the advantages of new technological solutions in connection with social distancing. Our study shows that, in addition to sociodemographic characteristics such as age and level of education, emotionally motivated factors induced by the pandemic have begun to play an important role in the transition to cashless payment.
