Systematic Experimental Investigation of Segregation Direction and Layer Inversion in Binary Liquid-Fluidized Bed
Alberto Di Renzo, Giacomo Rito, Francesco P. Di Maio
April 1, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: expansion, layer inversion, liquid-fluidization, Mixing, multi-component beds, segregation
Multi-component liquid-fluidized beds are encountered in a variety of industrial processes. Often, segregation severely affects the performance of the process unit. Unfortunately, size-driven and density-driven separation processes may occur with a complex interplay, showing prevailing mechanisms that change with the operating conditions. For example, when the solids exhibit contrasting differences in size and density, even the direction of segregation can turn out hard to predict, giving rise for some systems to the so-called “layer inversion phenomenon”. A systematic experimental investigation is presented on 14 different binary beds composed of glass beads and ABS spheres with different size and density ratios and different bed composition. The analysis allows assessing the reliability of a model for predicting the segregation direction of fluidized binary beds (the Particle Segregation Model, PSM). By measurements of the solids’ concentration at the surface, expansion/segregation p... [more]

Pedro Cerezal Mezquita, Aldo Álvarez López, Waldo Bugueño Muñoz
April 1, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: lettuce leaves, mathematical modeling, solar drying, thin layer drying
The thin layer drying behavior of lettuce leaves was investigated using an indirect pilot solar dryer with thermal energy storage in water, equipped with solar collectors and photovoltaic cells. The drying procedure consisted of shredded lettuce leaves, temperature ≤ 52 °C, airspeed, 1.0 m∙s−1, and process time ~10.0 h. Fifteen drying models were adjusted to the experimental data obtained; three models with maximum values of coefficient of determination (R2)—Page, Midilli, and Kucuk, and Weibull Distribution, whose values of R2 ≥ 0.998, and other statistical parameters, χ2, SSE, and RMSE values closer to zero were chosen. The initial browning index BI = 120.5 ± 0.7 decreased compared to the dry sample BI = 78.99 ± 0.5, with chromatic coordinate degradations a* and b*; but not the luminosity L*; where ΔE = 8.26; whose meaning is that the dry sample is a “more opaque brownish color” due to the difference in the chroma ΔC = 6.65, and with a change from the yellow-green to yellow-red zone,... Yancong Liu, Yingya Wu, Xiaogang Shi, Chengxiu Wang, Jinsen Gao, Xingying Lan
March 25, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: back-mixing, CPFD, downer, gas-solids flow, riser
The difference of gas-solids flow between a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) downer and riser was compared by computational particle fluid dynamics (CPFD) approach. The comparison was conducted under the same operating conditions. Simulation results demonstrated that the downer showed much more uniform solids holdup and solids velocity distribution compared with the riser. The radial non-uniformity index of the solids holdup in the riser was over 10 times than that in the downer. In addition, small clusters tended to be present in the whole downer, large clusters tended to be present near the wall in riser. It was found that the different cluster behavior is important in determining the different flow behaviors of solids in the downer and riser. While the particle residence time increased evenly along the downward direction in the downer, particles with both shorter and longer residence time were predicted in the whole riser. The nearly vertical cumulative residence time distribution (R... [more]

March 25, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: aluminium, coagulation, desirability, enrichment, ion exchange dialysis, Nafion, response surface methodology (RSM)
An ion exchange dialysis (IED) is used in the recovery of aluminium from residue. In this paper, the face-centred central composite design (FC-CCD) of the response surface methodology (RSM) and desirability approach is used for experimental design, modelling and process optimization of a counter flow IED system. The feed concentration, feed flowrate, sweep flowrate and sweep concentration were selected as the process variables, with the Al transport across a Nafion 117 membrane as the target response. A total of 30 experimental runs were conducted with six centre points. The response obtained was analysed by analysis of variance (ANOVA) and fitted to a second-order polynomial model using multiple regression analysis. The actual R2 and standard deviation of the model are 0.9548 and 0.2932, respectively. Depending on the time zone of reference (24 h or 32 h), the highest enrichment of >1.50 was achieved. The designed variables were numerically optimized by applying the desirability funct... [more]

March 25, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: annulus burner, flame length, numerical simulation, rotary kiln, swirled flow
CFD (computational fluid dynamics) simulation using a commercial package (Fluent-ANSYS) on industrial rotary kilns using annulus-type burners and methane gas was carried out to examine the characteristics of the flame length and flow visualization. New influencing design and operating parameters—primary air swirl number, primary air inlet annulus diameter, and secondary air temperature—were investigated and discussed. The influence of these parameters on axial temperature distribution, axial mean mixture fractions, velocity vectors, mixture fractions, and temperature contours were investigated. The current numerical findings were compared with existing experimental results to validate the simulation approach. The results showed that the primary air swirl number had a remarkable influence on the flame length at a lower primary air inlet annulus diameter ratio of 2.3. Moreover, the flame length increased by 20% and 6% with increasing the swirl number from zero to one for primary air inle... [more]

Alessandra Adrover, Antonio Brasiello
March 12, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: 3-d modeling, cocoa beans, diffusion coefficient, drying kinetics, moving-boundary model
A recently proposed moving-boundary model for food isothermal dehydration was applied to analyze the dehydration kinetics of ellipsoidal cocoa beans, characterized by a moderate shrinkage and a non-uniform initial distribution of water content between the core and the shell of the bean. The aim is to predict the influence of air velocity and non-uniformity of the initial water distribution on the dehydration rates, as well as the temporal evolution of the water content in the core and in the shell and of the characteristic lengths of the ellipsoidal bean. The model proved capable of accurately describing the two-phases dehydration process: an initial fast dehydration of the shell, characterized by higher dehydration rates, followed by a slower dehydration of the core, characterized by a linear relationship j d = δ ( T ) X r between the dehydration rate j d and the moisture ratio X r . A shortcut method to estimate the effective water diffusivity D is also p... [more]

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, convective heat transfer, crude oil, fire heater, nucleate boiling, process simulation, radiative heat transfer, reboiler, thermo-physical properties, two phase flow
An advanced algorithm has been developed in order to analyze the performance of re-boiling process of crude oil flowing inside reboilers tubes. The proposed model is composed from Heptane fire heater and a tube array. The heat flux produced from burner is transferred to the crude oil flowing inside the tube. The computational model is composed of two phases—Simulation of fire by using Fire Dynamics Simulator software (FDS) version 5.0 and then a nucleate boiling computation of the crude oil. FDS code is formulated based on CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) of fire heater. The thermo-physical properties (such as: thermal conductivity, heat capacity, surface tension, viscosity) of the crude oil were estimated by using empirical correlations. The thermal heat transfer to evaporating two-phase crude oil mixture occur by bubble generation at the wall (nucleate boiling) has been calculated by using Chen correlation. It has been assumed that the overall convective heat transfer coefficient i... [more]

Xu Meng, Zhigang Zuo, Michihiro Nishi, Shuhong Liu
March 12, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: flow mechanism, flow simulation, loss analysis, splitter vane, wide-angle diffuser
Usage of a wide-angle diffuser may result in unfavorable separated flow and a significant diffuser loss. To improve the performance of the diffusers, inserting short splitter vanes is known as a useful method that has been demonstrated experimentally. Regarding the role of the vane in the diffuser flow, Senoo & Nishi (1977) qualitatively explained that the lift force acting on the vane should be a key factor. However, its quantitative verification remains since then. To challenge this issue, numerical simulations of incompressible flow in a wide angle of 28° two-dimensional diffuser with and without a short splitter vane were conducted in the present study. An improvement of pressure-recovery by the vane and oscillatory flows in the diffuser are reasonably reproduced from comparison with the experimental results made by Cochran & Kline (1958). It is also found that the lift force acting on the vane varies periodically in an opposite phase with the detachment point moved back and forth... [more]

March 12, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: annular multi-nozzle jet pump, numerical calculation, spanwise vortex, streamwise vortex
CFD simulation and analysis of the internal flow field of the annular multi-nozzle jet pump are carried out to study the effects of nozzle section geometries on performance of the pump based on the finite volume method and realizable k-ε model. The results show that the square nozzle peak efficiency is 3% higher than that of the circular nozzle and 4.1% higher than that of the triangular nozzle. According to the simulation results, the mixing mechanism of the working fluid and second fluid is analyzed on the basis of the vortex dynamics. The results show the following: the recirculation area and the friction loss of the non-circular nozzle are reduced, and the mixing effect is improved; the streamwise vortex plays a major role in the mixing process and decays to an extremely small value at the end of the throat after attenuating rapidly in the suction chamber; compared with the streamwise vortex, the strength of the spanwise vortex is relatively stronger; the spanwise vortex still fluc... March 12, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, flocculation state, jar test, sludge settling, water resource recovery facility
High rate activated sludge (HRAS) processes have a high potential for carbon and energy recovery from sewage, yet they suffer frequently from poor settleability due to flocculation issues. The process of flocculation is generally optimized using jar tests. However, detailed jar hydrodynamics are often unknown, and average quantities are used, which can significantly differ from the local conditions. The presented work combined experimental and numerical data to investigate the impact of local hydrodynamics on HRAS flocculation for two different jar test configurations (i.e., radial vs. axial impellers at different impeller velocities) and compared the hydrodynamics in these jar tests to those in a representative section of a full scale reactor using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The analysis showed that the flocculation performance was highly influenced by the impeller type and its speed. The axial impeller appeared to be more appropriate for floc formation over a range of impell... [more]

Keywords: C-H2 smelting reduction furnace, dimensional analysis, double-row side nozzles, mixing time, multiple linear regression
Higher requirements for steel smelting technology have been put forward based on the increasing awareness of energy conservation and environmental protection. In the field of iron making, carbon reduction processes are often used. In this study, molten iron was smelted by designing a C-H2 smelting reduction method. Although previous researchers have studied this through a large number of physical and numerical simulations, they have not yet refined general laws from the perspective of dimensional analysis. In this paper, a double-row side blow hydraulics simulation was carried out in the C-H2 smelting reduction furnace, and an entire list of dimensionless groups of input and output parameters was proposed based on its hydraulics simulation data. The expressions between the dimensionless group of mixing time and dimensionless groups such as Capillary number (Ca) and Lagrange group (La1) were obtained by multiple linear regression based on the experimental research results and data analy... Keywords: heat transfer, horizontal ground heat exchanger, linear heat source model, renewable energy sources
In order to predict long-term changes in the temperature of the ground in which a horizontal ground heat exchanger has been installed, it is beneficial to implement simplified mathematical models of heat transfer. The possibility of using a one-dimensional equation of heat conduction while modelling heat transfer in a ground heat exchanger with horizontal pipes has been demonstrated in the work. A theoretical analysis based on the linear heat source model as well as experimental research works have been carried out. It has been concluded that the temperature profiles of the ground in which parallel pipes of the heat exchanger are placed do not significantly differ from the profiles for the heat exchanger in the form of a plate; in particular, this refers to large distances from the level in which the pipes are positioned, small distances between pipes axes and the long duration of the process. Discrepancies between the calculated temperature increases for pipe and plate exchangers vari... [more]

February 24, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: gas lift, governing equation, temperature profile, wellbore profile
Gas lift is a simple, reliable artificial lift method which is frequently used in offshore oil field developments. In order to enhance the efficiency of production by gas lift, it is vital to exactly predict the distribution of temperature-field for fluid within the wellbore. A new mechanistic model is developed for computing flowing fluid temperature profiles in both conduits simultaneously for a continuous-flow gas-lift operation. This model assumes steady heat transfer in the formation, as well as steady heat transfer in the conduits. A micro-units discrete from the wellbore, whose heat transfer process is analyzed and whose heat transfer equation is set up according to the law of conservation of energy. A simplified algebraic solution to our model is conducted to analyze the temperature profile. Sensitivity analysis was conducted with the new model. The results indicate that mass flow rate of oil and the tubing overall heat transfer coefficient are the main factors that influence t... [more]

Keywords: computational fluid dynamics (CFD), electrolyte thickness, heat and mass transfer, operating temperature, solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC)
We investigated the effect of electrolyte thickness and operating temperature on the heat and mass transfer characteristics of solid oxide fuel cells. We conducted extensive numerical simulations to analyze single cell performance of a planar solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) with electrolyte thicknesses from 80 to 100 μm and operating temperatures between 700 °C and 800 °C. The commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code was utilized to simulate the transport behavior and electrochemical reactions. As expected, the maximum power density increased with decreasing electrolyte thickness, and the difference became significant when the current density increased among different electrolyte thicknesses at a fixed temperature. Thinner electrolytes are beneficial for volumetric power density due to lower ohmic loss. Moreover, the SOFC performance enhanced with increasing operating temperature, which substantially changed the reaction rate along the channel direction. This study can be used t... [more]

February 12, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: centrifugal pump, inlet guide vanes, offset angle, the pressure fluctuation frequency
In order to make the centrifugal pump run efficiently and stably under various working conditions, the influences of the incoming vortex flow in the inlet pipe on the main flow in the impeller is studied numerically, based on the k − ω SST turbulence model. Some guide vanes with different offset angle were added to change the statistical characteristic of the internal flow in the inlet pipe of the centrifugal pump. Both contour distributions of internal flow and statistical results of external performance are obtained and analyzed. The results show that the existence of vanes can divide the large vortex because of the reversed flow from the rotating impeller at low flow rate conditions into small vortices, which are easier to dissipate, make the velocity and pressure distribution more uniform, improve the stability of the flow in the impeller, reduce the hydraulic loss, and improve the hydraulic performance of the pump. The pump with vanes of offset angle 25° has a small pressu... [more]
Modeling and Exploiting Microbial Temperature Response

Keywords: bioprocess engineering, calorimetry, monitoring and control, temperature modeling, thermal growth curve, thermoregulation
Temperature is an important parameter in bioprocesses, influencing the structure and functionality of almost every biomolecule, as well as affecting metabolic reaction rates. In industrial biotechnology, the temperature is usually tightly controlled at an optimum value. Smart variation of the temperature to optimize the performance of a bioprocess brings about multiple complex and interconnected metabolic changes and is so far only rarely applied. Mathematical descriptions and models facilitate a reduction in complexity, as well as an understanding, of these interconnections. Starting in the 19th century with the “primal” temperature model of Svante Arrhenius, a variety of models have evolved over time to describe growth and enzymatic reaction rates as functions of temperature. Data-driven empirical approaches, as well as complex mechanistic models based on thermodynamic knowledge of biomolecular behavior at different temperatures, have been developed. Even though underlying biological... [more]

Keywords: dissolving technique, Fluent, high-efficiency mixer, numerical simulation, polymer flooding
The degree of polymer-water mixing in high-pressure pipelines on offshore oilfields usually influences the polymer solution’s performance. To realize efficient mixing of the polymer mother liquor with dilution water in the high-pressure pipeline, a high-efficiency mixer is designed and optimized. The designed mixer consists of four parts: a T-shaped pipe as the main body, an inlet flow-splitting plate, a stainless-steel flow-guiding tube, and an outlet flow-splitting plate. Mathematical models are built by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and the mixing effects are compared by using Fluent. The research results show that compared with conventional T-shaped mixers, the designed high-efficiency mixer has better mixing performance and increases the mixing rate to 80%. To optimize the mixing rate, the length of the stainless-steel tube is increased and the tube is perforated to guide the flow. The result shows that boring holes along straight lines around the tube can achieve good... [more]

Keywords: balsa core, buckling failure, mass loss kinetic, mechanical responses, moisture content, sandwich composite fire
In this study, the hygro−thermo−mechanical responses of balsa core sandwich structured composite was investigated by using experimental, analytical and numerical results. These investigations were performed on two types of specimen conditions: dry and moisture saturation sandwich composite specimens that are composed of E-glass/polyester skins bonded to a balsa core. The wet specimens were immersed in distilled water at 40 °C until saturated with water. The both dry and wet sandwich composite specimens were heated by fire. The mass loss kinetic and the mechanical properties were investigated by using a cone calorimeter following the ISO 5660 standard and three-point bending mechanical test device. Experimental data show that the permeability and fire resistance of the sandwich structure are controlled by two composite skins. Obtained results allow us to understand the Hygro−Thermo−Mechanical Responses of the sandwich structured composite under application conditions.

February 12, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: dual solution, ferrofluid, MHD, mixed convection, stability analysis, thermal radiation
This paper investigated the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) mixed convection flow of Fe3O4-water ferrofluid over a nonlinearly moving surface. The present work focused on how the state of suction on the surface of the moving sheet and the effects of thermal radiation influence the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics within the stagnation region. As such, a similarity solution is engaged to transform the governing partial differential equations to the ordinary differential equations. A collocation method, namely the bvp4c function in the MATLAB software solves the reduced system, numerically. Two different numerical solutions were identified for the cases of assisting and opposing flows. The stability analysis was conducted to test the stability of the non-uniqueness solutions. The increment of the thermal radiation effect affects the rate of heat transfer to decrease. The stability analysis conveyed that the upper branch solution is stable and vice versa for the other solution.

February 12, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: dynamic behavior mode, fault injection, fly-by-wire system, Monte Carlo simulation, system safety assessment
Safety analysis is one of the important means to show compliance with airworthiness requirements. The traditional safety analysis methods are significantly dependent on analysts’ skills and experiences. A model-based safety analysis approach is proposed for typical fly-by-wire (FBW) systems based on the system development model built via Simulink, by which the response of system performances can be simulated. The safety requirements of the FBW system are defined by presenting the thresholds of system performance metrics, and the effects of failure conditions on aircraft safety are determined according to the system response simulation by injecting failures or failure combinations into the Simulink model. The Monte Carlo simulation method is used to calculate the probability of unsafe conditions, whose effects are determined by the system response simulation with fault injections. Finally, a case study is used to illustrate the effectiveness and advantages of our proposed approach.

February 12, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: delay, microalgae, Modelling, respirometry
During mathematical representation of microbial cultures, it is normally assumed that changes in the environment produce instantaneous effects on growth. However, reports are available indicating that sometimes this may not be the case. This work studied the existence of delays on the response of a population of microalgae when subjected to changes in energy and carbon sources, and when exposed to a growth inhibitor. Results show that no appreciable delays exist when microalgae undergo changes in the incident light intensity. For changes in carbon source concentration (inorganic carbon), a small delay in the range of minutes was detected. Finally, when exposing microalgae to inhibitory concentrations of ammonia, a significant delay of several hours was observed.

Keywords: axial piston pump, flow distribution characteristics, PIV measurements, RNG k-ε model
This paper aims at studying the dynamic fluid evolution process of port plate pair of an axial piston pump. First of all, The Renormalization Group k-ε model (RNG k-ε model) is implemented to simulate the dynamic flow distribution and forecast the evolution of the internal vortex structure inside the valve plate chamber with different speeds of pistons and velocities of inlet fluid by using computational fluid dynamics software. Then, an equivalent amplification test model of a piston-valve plate is built up based on Reynolds similarity theory; the flow state of the piston-valve plate flow field is observed applied the particle image velocimetry (PIV) measuring technique. The resulting uniformity of numerical simulation and PIV measurement verifies that the RNG k-ε model can achieve high-precision prediction for the vortex structure inside the valve plate chamber. Through analysis of velocity contours and streamlines of the flow field, it can be found that vortices with different scale... [more]

February 12, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: ball valve, flow stability, guiding plate, opening degree, velocity and pressure distributions
When internal flows go through a valve with a small opening degree, high-speed jet flows are induced, which causes the erosion of the valve core and affects the stability of the flow field. Setting guiding plates in the valve behind the valve core has the function of reducing the adverse effect of high-speed jet flows. In this work, numerical simulations were carried out to investigate the effect of the guiding plate on flow and resistance coefficient, velocity and pressure distributions and flow stability downstream of the valve. The number of guiding plates was changed from 0 to 3 and the opening degree was varied from 0 to 100% at intervals of 10%. A guiding plate with holes in it plays the role of bypassing and guiding flow. Under the action of the guiding plate, the flow coefficient obviously decreases, the gap flow between the valve core and the valve wall in the top of the valve are modified, and the gap flow even disappeared in the valve with 3 guiding plates. It was found that... [more]
