May 2, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: average flow rate, flow pulsation, gear pair’s geometric parameters, performance evaluations, simulation analysis, straight line conjugate internal meshing gear pump
The improvement of the overall performance of hydraulic pumps is the basis of intelligent hydraulics. Taking the straight line conjugate internal meshing gear pump as the research object, the theoretical flow rate and the geometric flow pulsation rate equations are established in this study through the volume change method. The change laws of the gear pair’s geometric parameters on the theoretical flow rate and the geometric flow pulsation rate are studied. The simulation model of the internal flow channel is established, and the influence factors and the influence degree of the flow pulsation and average flow rate are analyzed. The high-pressure positive displacement pump test system is also designed and built. The performance evaluations are conducted, and the experimental results are analyzed. The results show that the periodic change of the meshing point position is the root cause of the geometric flow pulsation. The theoretical flow rate and the geometric flow pulsation rate are 1... Numerical Analysis of High-Pressure Direct Injection Dual-Fuel Diesel-Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Engines
May 2, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: compression ignition, cryogenic gas, diesel engines, direct injection, dual fuel engines, greenhouse gas emissions, Natural Gas, particulate matter
Dual fuel engines using diesel and fuels that are gaseous at normal conditions are receiving increasing attention. They permit to achieve the same (or better) than diesel power density and efficiency, steady-state, and substantially similar transient performances. They also permit to deliver better than diesel engine-out emissions for CO2, as well as particulate matter, unburned hydrocarbons, and nitrous oxides. The adoption of injection in the liquid phase permits to further improve the power density as well as the fuel conversion efficiency. Here, a model is developed to study a high-pressure, 1600 bar, liquid phase injector for liquefied natural gas (LNG) in a high compression ratio, high boost engine. The engine features two direct injectors per cylinder, one for the diesel and one for the LNG. The engine also uses mechanically assisted turbocharging (super-turbocharging) to improve the steady-state and transient performances of the engine, decoupling the power supply at the turbin... 3D Magneto-Buoyancy-Thermocapillary Convection of CNT-Water Nanofluid in the Presence of a Magnetic Field
May 2, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: buoyancy thermocapillary convection, CNT-water nanofluid, flow control., magnetic field direction, Marangoni number
A numerical study is performed to investigate the effects of adding Carbon Nano Tube (CNT) and applying a magnetic field in two directions (vertical and horizontal) on the 3D-thermo-capillary natural convection. The cavity is differentially heated with a free upper surface. Governing equations are solved using the finite volume method. Results are presented in term of flow structure, temperature field and rate of heat transfer. In fact, results revealed that the flow structure and heat transfer rate are considerably affected by the magnitude and the direction of the magnetic field, the presence of thermocapillary forces and by increasing nanoparticles volume fraction. In opposition, the increase of the magnetic field magnitude leads to the control the flow causing flow stabilization by merging vortexes and reducing heat transfer rate.

Fluid−Solid Coupling Model and Simulation of Gas-Bearing Coal for Energy Security and Sustainability
April 14, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: coal containing gas, energy safety, fluid–solid coupling, permeability, Sustainability
The optimum design of gas drainage boreholes is crucial for energy security and sustainability in coal mining. Therefore, the construction of fluid−solid coupling models and numerical simulation analyses are key problems for gas drainage boreholes. This work is based on the basic theory of fluid−solid coupling, the correlation definition between coal porosity and permeability, and previous studies on the influence of adsorption expansion, change in pore free gas pressure, and the Klinkenberg effect on gas flow in coal. A mathematical model of the dynamic evolution of coal permeability and porosity is derived. A fluid−solid coupling model of gas-bearing coal and the related partial differential equation for gas migration in coal are established. Combined with an example of the measurement of the drilling radius of the bedding layer in a coal mine, a coupled numerical solution under negative pressure extraction conditions is derived by using COMSOL Multiphysics simulation software. Numerical Analysis on Velocity and Temperature of the Fluid in a Blast Furnace Main Trough
April 14, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: conjugate heat transfer, main trough, refractory, transient fluid of hot metal and molten slag, wall shear stress
The main trough is a part of the blast furnace process for hot metal and molten slag transportation from the tap hole to the torpedo, and mechanical erosion of the trough is an important reason for a short life of a campaign. This article employed OpenFoam code to numerically study and analyze velocity, temperature and wall shear stress of the fluids in the main trough during a full tapping process. In the code, a three-dimensional transient mass, momentum and energy conservation equations, including the standard k-ε turbulence model, were developed for the fluid in the trough. Temperature distribution in refractory is solved by the Fourier equation through conjugate heat transfer with the fluid in the trough. Change velocities of the fluid during the full tapping process are exactly described by a parabolic equation. The investigation results show that there are strong turbulences at the area of hot metal’s falling position and the turbulences have influence on velocity, temperature a... [more]

April 14, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: carboxymethylcellulose solutions, Computational Fluid Dynamics, microfluidics, shear thinning fluids, Taylor bubbles, volume of fluid method
Slug flow is a multiphase flow pattern characterized by the occurrence of long gas bubbles (Taylor bubbles) separated by liquid slugs. This multiphase flow regime is present in many and diversified natural and industrial processes, at macro and microscales, such as in eruption of volcanic magmas, oil recovery from pre-salt regions, micro heat exchangers, and small-sized refrigerating systems. Previous studies in the literature have been mostly focused on tubular gas bubbles flowing in Newtonian liquids. In this work, results from several numerical simulations of tubular gas bubbles flowing in a shear thinning liquid in microchannels are reported. To simulate the shear thinning behavior, carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) solutions with different concentrations were considered. The results are compared with data from bubbles flowing in Newtonian liquids in identical geometric and dynamic conditions. The numerical work was carried out in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) package Ansys Fluent... [more]

Influence of Soil Particle Size on the Temperature Field and Energy Consumption of Injected Steam Soil Disinfection
April 14, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: energy consumption, soil particle size, soil steam disinfection, soil temperature, soil water content
Soil steam disinfection (SSD) technology is an effective means of eliminating soil borne diseases. Among the soil cultivation conditions of facility agriculture in the Yangtze River Delta region of China, the clay soil particles (SPs) are fine, the soil pores are small, and the texture is relatively viscous. When injection disinfection technology is applied in the clay soil, the diffusion of steam is hindered and the heating efficiency is substantially affected. To increase the heating efficiency of SSD, we first discretized the continuum model of Philip and De Vries into circular particle porous media of different sizes and random distribution. Then with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) numerical simulation technology, a single-injection steam disinfection model for different SP size conditions was constructed. Furthermore, the diffusion pattern of the macro-porous vapor flow and matrix flow and the corresponding temperature field were simulated and analyzed. Finally, a single-pipe... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: blast furnace, burden distribution, charging system, mathematical model, radar data
Charging directly affects the burden distribution of a blast furnace, which determines the gas distribution in the shaft of the furnace. Adjusting the charging can improve the distribution of the gas flow, increase the gas utilization efficiency of the furnace, reduce energy consumption, and prolong the life of the blast furnace. In this paper, a mathematical model of blast furnace charging was developed and applied on a steel plant in China, which includes the display of the burden profile, burden layers, descent speed of the layers, and ore/coke ratio. Furthermore, the mathematical model is developed to combine the radar data of the burden profile. The above model is currently used in Nanjing Steel as a reference for operators to adjust the charging. The model is being tested with a radar system on the blast furnace.

April 14, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Alaska Pollock, Computational Fluid Dynamics temperature sweep, rheology, surimi
Moisture transfer characteristics of Alaska pollock (AP) surimi were investigated at various temperatures. The effective moisture diffusivity increased from 5.50 × 10−11 to 2.07 × 10−9 m2/s as the temperature increased from 30 °C to 90 °C. In order to investigate the mass and heat transfer characteristics of AP surimi, the simulation model was developed and evaluated by root-mean-square error (RMSE) (<2.95%). Rheological properties of AP surimi were investigated at different heating rates (1 °C/min, 5 °C/min, 10 °C/min, 20 °C/min and 30 °C/min). As heating rate increased to 20 °C/min and 30 °C/min, elastic modulus (G’) significantly diminished. The diminished G’ could be explained by impaired gel during temperature sweep supported by the predicted temperature distribution in the simulation model. Changes in moisture content of AP surimi during temperature sweep were also measured and predicted by the simulation model. The results showed the decreased amount of moisture content signi... [more]

April 14, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: EOR, heat penetration depth, reservoir modeling, SAGD, semi-analytical method
Steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) is one of the most successful thermal enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods for cold viscose oils. Several analytical and semi-analytical models have been theorized, yet the process needs more studies to be conducted to improve quick production rate predictions. Following the exponential geometry theory developed for finding the oil production rate, an upgraded predictive model is presented in this study. Unlike the exponential model, the current model divides the steam-oil interface into several segments, and then the heat and mass balances are applied to each of the segments. By manipulating the basic equations, the required formulas for estimating the oil drainage rate, location of interface, heat penetration depth of steam ahead of the interface, and the steam required for the operation are obtained theoretically. The output of the proposed theory, afterwards, is validated with experimental data, and then finalized with data from the real SAGD p... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: adiabatic film cooling effectiveness, blowing ratio, density ratio, jet angle, response surface methodology
This study investigates the interrelated parameters affecting heat transfer from a hot gas flowing on a flat plate while cool air is injected adjacent to the flat plate. The cool air forms an air blanket that shield the flat plate from the hot gas flow. The cool air is blown from a confined jet and is simulated using a two-dimensional numerical model under three variable parameters; namely, blowing ratio, jet angle and density ratio. The interrelations between these parameters are evaluated to properly understand their effects on heat transfer. The analyses are conducted using ANSYS-Fluent, and the performance of the air blanket is reported using local and average adiabatic film cooling effectiveness (AFCE). The interrelation between these parameters and the AFCE is established through a statistical method known as response surface methodology (RSM). The RSM model shows that the AFCE has a second order relation with the blowing ratio and a first order relation with both jet angle and d... [more]

Research on Rotordynamic Characteristics of Pump Annular Seals Based on a New Transient CFD Method
April 14, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: pump annular seals, rotordynamic characteristics, seal length, transient CFD method
Pump annular seals can cause fluid reaction forces that have great effects on the vibration characteristic and stability of a pump system. For this reason, it is important to study rotordynamic characteristics of annular seals. In this paper, a new transient computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method with dynamic mesh is proposed to investigate rotordynamic characteristics of the pump annular seal. The reliability of the transient CFD method is validated by comparison with the results from the experiment and the bulk-flow method, and the relationship between the seal length and rotordynamic characteristics is investigated by the transient CFD method. The results indicate that direct stiffness decreases sharply even turns to negative as the seal length increases, this phenomenon may change the direction of fluid force on the rotor surface and affect supporting condition of the pump rotor. With the increasing seal length, the whirl frequency ratio gradually increases, which would weaken t... [more]

On Fluid Flow Field Visualization in a Staggered Cavity: A Numerical Result
April 14, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: finite element method, Moving Walls, Newtonian fluid model, staggered cavity
In this paper we have considered a staggered cavity. It is equipped with purely viscous fluid. The physical design is controlled through mathematical formulation in terms of both the equation of continuity and equation of momentum along with boundary constraints. To be more specific, the Navier-Stokes equations for two dimensional Newtonian fluid flow in staggered enclosure is formulated and solved by well trusted method named finite element method. The novelty is increased by considering the motion of upper and lower walls of staggered cavity case-wise namely, in first case we consider that the upper wall of staggered cavity is moving and rest of walls are kept at zero velocity. In second case we consider that the upper and bottom walls are moving in a parallel way. Lastly, the upper and bottom walls are considered in an antiparallel direction. In all cases the deep analysis is performed and results are proposed by means of contour plots. The velocity components are explained by line... [more]

April 14, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: calibration, DEM, input parameters, non-spherical particles, particulates
This paper’s goal was to select methods and a calibration procedure which would lead to the determination of relevant parameters of a discrete element method (DEM) and virtual material creation. Seven particulates were selected with respect to their shape (spherical and non-spherical), size and density. The first calibration experiment involved “packing test” to determine the shape accuracy and bulk density of virtual packed particulates. The series of simulations were compared with real experiments, and the size, shape and density of virtual particles were optimized. Using three apparatuses, the input parameter values were experimentally determined for a contact model that defines the behavior of particulates in DEM simulations. The research part of the paper examines the influence of factors such as particle number; pile formation method; and the method of evaluation of the angle of repose on the process of the calibration of virtual material. Numerical Study of Binary Trickle Flow of Liquid Iron and Molten Slag in Coke Bed by Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics
April 14, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: coke bed, ironmaking blast furnace, liquid iron, molten slag, SPH, trickle flow
In the bottom region of blast furnaces during the ironmaking process, the liquid iron and molten slag drip into the coke bed by the action of gravity. In this study, a practical multi-interfacial smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulation is carried out to track the complex liquid transient dripping behavior involving two immiscible phases in the coke bed. Numerical simulations were performed for different conditions corresponding to different values of wettability force between molten slag and cokes. The predicted dripping velocity changes and interfacial shape were investigated. The relaxation of the surface force of liquid iron plays a significant role in the dripping rate; i.e., the molten slag on the cokes acts as a lubricant against liquid iron flow. If the attractive force between the coke and slag is smaller than the gravitational force, the slag then drops together with the liquid iron. When the attractive force between the coke and slag becomes dominant, the iron-slag i... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: convective surface boundary conditions, finite element method, MHD, nanofluid, themo-diffussion
The present study investigated the steady magnetohydrodynamics of the axisymmetric flow of a incompressible, viscous, electricity-conducting nanofluid with convective boundary conditions and thermo-diffusion over a radially stretched surface. The governing non-linear partial differential equations were transformed into a system of nonlinear, ordinary differential equations with the aid of similarity transformations which were solved numerically, using the very efficient variational finite element method. The coefficient of skin friction and rate of heat transfer, and an exact solution of fluid flow velocity, were contrasted with the numerical solution gotten by FEM. Excellent agreement between the numerical and exact solutions was observed. Investigation of an Improved Polymer Flooding Scheme by Compositionally-Tuned Slugs
April 14, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: injectivity, polymer, sensitivity, slug, surrogate, uncertainty
Polymer flooding is an effective enhanced oil recovery technology used to reduce the mobility ratio and improve sweep efficiency. A new polymer injection scheme is investigated that relies on the cyclical injection of low-salinity, low-concentration polymer slugs chased by high-salinity, high-concentration polymer slugs. The effectiveness of the process is a function of several reservoir and design parameters related to polymer type, concentration, salinity, and reservoir heterogeneity. We use reservoir simulations and design-of-experiments (DoE) to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed polymer injection scheme. We show how key objective functions, such as recovery factor and injectivity, are impacted by the reservoir and design parameters. In this study, simulations showed that the new slug-based process was always superior to the reference polymer injection scheme using the traditional continuous injection scheme. April 1, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: impinging force, particle-gas flows, stokes number, supersonic impinging jet, wall shear stress
Supersonic impinging jet flows always occur when aircrafts start short takeoff and vertical landing from the ground. Supersonic flows with residues produced by chemical reaction of fuel mixture have the potential of reducing aircraft performance and landing ground. April 1, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: finite element method, fracture intersection, hydraulic fractures, PPCZ element
Hydraulic fracturing is a significant technique in petroleum engineering to enhance the production of shale gas or shale oil reservoir. The process of hydraulic fracturing is extremely complicated, referring to the deformation of solid formation, fluid flowing in the crack channel, and coupling the solid with fluid. Simulation of hydraulic fracturing and understanding the course of the mechanism is still a challenging task. In this study, two hydraulic fracturing models, including the Khristianovic−Geertsma−de Klerk (KGD) problem and the hydraulic fracture (HF) intersection with the natural fracture (NF), based on the zero thickness pore pressure cohesive zone (PPCZ) element with contact friction is established. The element can be embedded into the edges of other elements to simulate the fracture initiation and propagation. April 1, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: alternative refrigerants, global warming potential, HFOs, modeling and simulation of energy systems, R1234ze(Z), R134a, vapor compression refrigeration cycle
Global warming is one of most severe environmental concerns that our planet is facing today. One of its causes is the previous generation of refrigerants that, upon release, remain in the atmosphere for longer periods and contribute towards global warming. This issue could potentially be solved by replacing the previous generation’s high global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants with environmentally friendly refrigerants. This scenario requires an analysis of new refrigerants for a comparison of the thermodynamic properties of the previously used refrigerants. In the present research, a numerical study was conducted to analyze the thermodynamic performance of specifically low GWP hydrofluoroolefens (HFO) refrigerants for an actual vapor compression refrigeration cycle (VCRC) with a constant degree of 3 K superheat. April 1, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: DEM, homogenization, Mixing, particulates, rotating drum, validation
The process of homogenization of particulates is an indispensable part of many industrial processes, and, therefore, it is necessary to pay a special attention to this area and develop it. This paper deals with a complex study of homogenization of particulate matters in a rotary drum in terms of shape, size, and density of particles. In addition, the influence of operating parameters, such as drum filling capacity, rotational speed, and drum filling pattern are also investigated. Studies of reproducibility of discrete element method simulations, effects of rotary drum sizes or effects of drum volumetric filling to the mixture homogeneity index were also carried out. In general, the least satisfactory values of the homogeneity index resulted from the mixing of particles with different densities. The dominating factor of homogenization was the drum filling-up degree. The course of the homogeneity index in 140, 280, and 420 mm drums was very similar and after five revolutions of the drum,... Review of the Numerical Modeling of Compression Molding of Sheet Molding Compound
April 1, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: compression molding, numerical modeling, sheet molding compound
A review of the numerical modeling of the compression molding of the sheet molding compound (SMC) is presented. The focus of this review is the practical difficulties of modeling cases with high fiber content, an area in which there is relatively little documented work. In these cases, the prediction of the flows become intricate due to several reasons, mainly the complex rheology of the compound and large temperature gradients, but also the orientation of fibers and the micromechanics of the interactions between the fluid and the fibers play major roles. The details of this during moldings are discussed. Special attention is given to the impact on viscosity from the high fiber volume fraction, and the various models for this. One additional area of interest is the modeling of the fiber orientation.
