Zhun Meng, Yi-Feng Wang, Liang Yang, Wei Li
December 10, 2019 (v1)
Keywords: dual-buck inverter, grid-connected generation, high frequency conversion, loss analysis, SiC power device, Simulation
A high frequency dual-buck full-bridge inverter for small power renewable energy application is proposed in this paper. A switching frequency of 400 kHz is achieved with the adoption of the SiC power device. A two-pole two-zero (2P2Z) compensator is employed in the outer voltage loop to generate the current reference for inner current loop. A 3P3Z compensator is adopted in the inner current loop to track the current reference. A systematic way for calculating the losses of high frequency inverter is presented, and the losses of the components are thoroughly analyzed. The turn-on and turn-off procedures of the inverter are discussed in detail. The losses caused by high frequency are calculated accurately, and the loss distribution is established as well. The procedure of the loss analysis gives a practical example for calculating the loss of similar type inverters. Moreover, deviation between pulse width modulation (PWM) control signal and switching response in high frequency switching... [more]
Pressure Losses in Hydraulic Manifolds

December 10, 2019 (v1)
Keywords: CFD analysis, Hydraulic Manifold, Pressure Drop
Hydraulic manifolds are used to realize compact circuit layout, but may introduce a high pressure drop in the system. Their design is in fact oriented more toward achieving minimum size and weight than to reducing pressure losses. This work studies the pressure losses in hydraulic manifolds using different methods: Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) analysis; semi-empirical formulation derived from the scientific literature, when available; and experimental characterization. The purpose is to obtain the pressure losses when the channels’ connections within the manifold are not ascribable to the few classic cases studied in the literature, in particular for 90° bends (elbows) with expansion/contraction and offset intersection of channels. Moreover, since CFD analysis is used to predict pressure losses, general considerations of the manifold design may be outlined and this will help the design process in the optimization of flow passages. The main results obtained show how CFD analysis ov... [more]

December 10, 2019 (v1)
Keywords: fin array, fin spacing, natural convection, openings, thermal resistance
This study numerically investigates the effects of the number of bottom openings and the fin spacing on both the natural convection heat transfer and airflow field of the handheld projector with various orientations. The horizontally-oriented 120 mm × 53 mm × 19 mm handheld projector, which had 11 bottom openings and was installed with either 7 plate fins or 13 rows of square pin, was considered as the primary case. The fin number varied from 6 plates to 13 plates or from 7 pin rows to 16 pin rows, while the bottom openings varied from 11 to 15 in this study with handheld projector held at a specified inclination ranging from −90° to 90°. The results showed that the heat transfer coefficient of a specific surface of the plate-fin array installed in the primary handheld projector increased from 6 to 7 W/m²·K as the heating power increased from 2 W to 7 W. The optimal fin spacing in the handheld projector possessing 11 bottom openings was 2.875 mm and 3.375 mm for the plate-fin and pin-f... [more]

Keywords: Aspen Plus, energy self-sufficient, fluidized bed gasifier, life cycle assessment (LCA)
The biomass gasification process is widely accepted as a popular technology to produce fuel for the application in gas turbines and Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC). Chemical reactions of this process can be separated into three reaction zones: pyrolysis, combustion, and reduction. In this study, sensitivity analysis with respect to three input parameters (gasification temperature, equivalence ratio, and steam-to-biomass ratio) has been carried out to achieve energy self-sufficient conditions in a steam gasification process under the criteria that the carbon conversion efficiency must be more than 70%, and carbon dioxide gas is lower than 20%. Simulation models of the steam gasification process have been carried out by ASPEN Plus and validated with both experimental data and simulation results from Nikoo & Mahinpey (2008). Gasification temperature of 911 °C, equivalence ratio of 0.18, and a steam-to-biomass ratio of 1.78, are considered as an optimal operation point to achieve energy se... [more]

December 10, 2019 (v1)
Keywords: drift-diffusion, modelling and simulation, organic semiconductor, power conversion efficiency (PCE), solar cells
There are numerous theoretical approaches to estimating the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs), ranging from the empirical approach to calculations based on general considerations of thermodynamics. Depending on the level of abstraction and model assumptions, the accuracy of PCE estimation and complexity of the calculation can change dramatically. In particular, PCE estimation with a drift-diffusion approach (widely investigated in the literature), strongly depends on the assumptions made for the physical models and optoelectrical properties of semiconducting materials. This has led to a huge deviation as well as complications in the analysis of simulated results aiming to understand the factors limiting the performance of OSCs. In this work, we intend to highlight the complex relation between mobility, exciton dynamics, nanoscale dimension, and loss mechanisms in one framework. Our systematic analysis represents key information on the sensitivity of the dr... [more]

Keywords: embedded systems, energy emulation, photovoltaic (PV) array models
Reproducibility of experimental conditions is a fundamental requirement for designing energy efficient, self-sustainable wireless sensor networks (WSNs). At the same time, it represents a significant challenge because of the variability and the unpredictability of many energy harvesting sources, and because of the dynamic operating conditions of the devices to which energy is supplied. Energy source emulation is considered a suitable solution to enable the exploration of the design space of networked embedded systems. However, in order to guarantee the compatibility with real-time performance of resource-constrained embedded platforms, particular attention has to be paid to the complexity of the models. In this paper, we propose an approach aimed at tuning the complexity of models of photovoltaic (PV) arrays implemented on a target embedded emulator, featuring low cost and small form factor. Experimental results performed on different models of PV array, show that the proposed solution... [more]

Keywords: closed wet cooling tower, cooling capacity, cooling tower effectiveness, counter-flow, Levenberg–Marquardt method
As one of the most widely used units in water cooling systems, the closed wet cooling towers (CWCTs) have two typical counter-flow constructions, in which the spray water flows from the top to the bottom, and the moist air and cooling water flow in the opposite direction vertically (parallel) or horizontally (cross), respectively. This study aims to present a simplified calculation method for conveniently and accurately analyzing the thermal performance of the two types of counter-flow CWCTs, viz. the parallel counter-flow CWCT (PCFCWCT) and the cross counter-flow CWCT (CCFCWCT). A simplified cooling capacity model that just includes two characteristic parameters is developed. The Levenberg⁻Marquardt method is employed to determine the model parameters by curve fitting of experimental data. Based on the proposed model, the predicted outlet temperatures of the process water are compared with the measurements of a PCFCWCT and a CCFCWCT, respectively, reported in the literature. The resul... [more]

December 10, 2019 (v1)
Keywords: circular fins, phase change material (PCM), shell-and-tube, thermal energy storage
Latent thermal energy storage (LTS) systems are versatile due to their high-energy storage density within a small temperature range. In shell-and-tube type storage systems fins can be used in order to achieve enhanced charging and discharging power. Typically, circular fins are evenly distributed over the length of the heat exchanger pipe. However, it is yet to be proven that this allocation is the most suitable for every kind of system and application. Consequently, within this paper, a simulation model was developed in order to examine the effect of different fin distributions on the performance of shell-and-tube type latent thermal storage units at discharge. The model was set up in MATLAB Simulink R2015b (The MathWorks, Inc., Natick, MA, USA) based on the enthalpy method and validated by a reference model designed in ANSYS Fluent 15.0 (ANSYS, Inc., Canonsburg, PA, USA). The fin density of the heat exchanger pipe was increased towards the pipe outlet. This concentration of fins was... [more]

December 10, 2019 (v1)
Keywords: OpenFOAM, phase change, pool boiling, two-phase flow, VOF method
The present numerical investigation identifies quantitative effects of fundamental controlling parameters on the detachment characteristics of isolated bubbles in cases of pool boiling in the nucleate boiling regime. For this purpose, an improved Volume of Fluid (VOF) approach, developed previously in the general framework of OpenFOAM Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Toolbox, is further coupled with heat transfer and phase change. The predictions of the model are quantitatively verified against an existing analytical solution and experimental data in the literature. Following the model validation, four different series of parametric numerical experiments are performed, exploring the effect of the initial thermal boundary layer (ITBL) thickness for the case of saturated pool boiling of R113 as well as the effects of the surface wettability, wall superheat and gravity level for the cases of R113, R22 and R134a refrigerants. It is confirmed that the ITBL is a very important parameter in... [more]

Keywords: cost function, modular design, Organic Rankine Cycle, siloxane, thermoeconomics, waste heat recovery
Industrial waste heat recovery by means of an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) can contribute to the reduction of CO₂ emissions from industries. Before market penetration, high efficiency modular concepts have to be developed to achieve appropriate economic value for industrial decision makers. This paper aims to investigate modularly designed ORC systems from a thermoeconomic point of view. The main goal is a recommendation for a suitable chemical class of working fluids, preferable ORC design and a range of heat source temperatures and thermal capacities in which modular ORCs can be economically feasible. For this purpose, a thermoeconomic model has been developed which is based on size and complexity parameters of the ORC components. Special emphasis has been laid on the turbine model. The paper reveals that alkylbenzenes lead to higher exergetic efficiencies compared to alkanes and siloxanes. However, based on the thermoeconomic model, the payback periods of the chemical classes are alm... [more]

Keywords: equivalent circulating density, geothermal well, mathematical modeling, wellbore pressure analysis, wellbore temperature distribution
The accurate control of the wellbore pressure not only prevents lost circulation/blowout and fracturing formation by managing the density of the drilling fluid, but also improves productivity by mitigating reservoir damage. Calculating the geothermal pressure of a geothermal well by constant parameters would easily bring big errors, as the changes of physical, rheological and thermal properties of drilling fluids with temperature are neglected. This paper researched the wellbore pressure coupling by calculating the temperature distribution with the existing model, fitting the rule of density of the drilling fluid with the temperature and establishing mathematical models to simulate the wellbore pressures, which are expressed as the variation of Equivalent Circulating Density (ECD) under different conditions. With this method, the temperature and ECDs in the wellbore of the first medium-deep geothermal well, ZK212 Yangyi Geothermal Field in Tibet, were determined, and the sensitivity an... [more]

Keywords: depressurization, gas production, methane hydrate, numerical simulation, well-wall heating
In this study, a 2D hydrate dissociation simulator has been improved and verified to be valid in numerical simulations of the gas production behavior using depressurization combined with a well-wall heating method. A series of numerical simulations were performed and the results showed that well-wall heating had an influence enhancing the depressurization-induced gas production, but the influence was limited, and it was even gradually weakened with the increase of well-wall heating temperature. Meanwhile, the results of the sensitivity analysis demonstrated the gas production depended on the initial hydrate saturation, initial pressure and the thermal boundary conditions. The supply of heat for hydrate dissociation mainly originates from the thermal boundaries, whichcontrolthehydratedissociationandgasproductionbydepressurizationcombined with well-wall heating. However, the effect of initial temperature on the gas production could be nearly negligible under depressurization conditions combi... [more]

Keywords: adaptive torque estimation, cross-coupling, equivalent back electromotive forces (EMF), equivalent mutual inductance, interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM), parameter variations
This paper presents a new adaptive torque estimation algorithm for an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) with parameter variations and cross-coupling between d- and q-axis dynamics. All cross-coupled, time-varying, or uncertain terms that are not part of the nominal flux equations are included in two equivalent mutual inductances, which are described using the equivalent d- and q-axis back electromotive forces (EMFs). The proposed algorithm estimates the equivalent d- and q-axis back EMFs in a recursive and stability-guaranteed manner, in order to compute the equivalent mutual inductances between the d- and q-axes. Then, it provides a more accurate and adaptive torque equation by adding the correction terms obtained from the computed equivalent mutual inductances. Simulations and experiments demonstrate that torque estimation errors are remarkably reduced by capturing and compensating for the inherent cross-coupling effects and parameter variations adaptively, using th... December 10, 2019 (v1)
Keywords: coal mine, limit flow, liquid CO2, optimum inlet temperature and pressure, pipe diameter, pipeline with large height difference, safe transportation
Fire prevention and extinguishing and CO2 sequestration in coal mine gob require continuous transportation of liquid CO2 in pipelines with large height difference (from ground to underground). However, the temperature and pressure variation of liquid CO2 in pipelines with large height difference is still unclear, which hinders the design of a liquid CO2 pipeline transportation system. The influence of pipe diameter and inlet parameters (temperature and pressure) on the variation of temperature and pressure of liquid CO2 along the 1000 m vertical pipeline was studied in this paper. The study found that for each pipeline diameter considered there existed a range of flowrates where safe flow conditions could be ensured, at which no phase transition occurs throughout the length of the pipeline. When the transporting flow is larger than the maximum limit flow, phase transition occurs dramatically, which will lead to a sudden drop in temperature and pressure. When the transporting flow rate... [more]

Keywords: liquid–liquid equilibrium, multistage extraction, numerical continuation, Optimization, parameterization, surrogate modeling
Computational effort and convergence problems can pose serious challenges when employing advanced thermodynamic models in process simulation and optimization. Data-based surrogate modeling helps to overcome these problems at the cost of additional modeling effort. The present work extends the range of methods for efficient data-based surrogate modeling of liquid−liquid equilibria. A new model formulation is presented that enables smaller surrogates with box-constrained input domains and reduced input dimensions. Sample data are generated efficiently by using numerical continuation. The new methods are demonstrated for the surrogate modeling and optimization of a process for the hydroformylation of 1-decene in a thermomorphic multiphase system.

Keywords: gas separation, Knudsen diffusion, molecular sieving, MXene, transport mechanism
Clarifying the mechanism for the gas transportation in the emerging 2D materials-based membranes plays an important role on the design and performance optimization. In this work, the corresponding studies were conducted experimentally and theoretically. To this end, we measured the gas permeances of hydrogen and nitrogen from their mixture through the supported MXene lamellar membrane. Knudsen diffusion and molecular sieving through straight and tortuous nanochannels were proposed to elucidate the gas transport mechanism. The average pore diameter of 5.05 Å in straight nanochannels was calculated by linear regression in the Knudsen diffusion model. The activation energy for H2 transport in molecular sieving model was calculated to be 20.54 kJ mol−1. From the model, we can predict that the gas permeance of hydrogen (with smaller kinetic diameter) is contributed from both Knudsen diffusion and molecular sieving mechanism, but the permeance of larger molecular gases like nitrogen is sourc... December 10, 2019 (v1)
Keywords: energy balance, heat flux, macrolayer, mathematical model
A mathematical model has been developed for heat exchange in nucleate boiling at high flux applying an energy balance on a macrolayer. The wall superheat, macrolayer thickness, and time are the parameters considered for predicting the heat flux. The influence of the wall superheat and macrolayer thickness on average heat flux has been predicted. The outcomes of the current model have been compared with Bhat’s constant macrolayer model, and it was found that these models are in close agreement corresponding to the nucleate pool boiling regime. It was concluded that the wall superheat and macrolayer thickness contributed significantly to conduction heat transfer. The average conduction heat fluxes predicted by the current model and by Bhat’s model are in close agreement for a thinner macrolayer of approximately 50 µm. For higher values of the wall superheat, which corresponds to the nucleate pool boiling condition, the predicted results strongly agree with the results of Bhat’s model. Th... [more]

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, droplet characteristic, Eulerian–Lagrangian approach, natural gas desulfurization, rotating packed bed
Rotating packed bed (RPB) has been demonstrated as a significant and emerging technology to be applied in natural gas desulfurization. However, droplet characteristics and principle in H2S selective absorption with N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) solution have seldom been fully investigated by experimental method. Therefore, a 3D Eulerian−Lagrangian approach has been established to investigate the droplet characteristics. The discrete phase model (DPM) is implemented to track the behavior of droplets, meanwhile the collision model and breakup model are employed to describe the coalescence and breakup of droplets. The simulation results indicate that rotating speed and radial position have a dominant impact on droplet velocity, average residence time and average diameter rather than initial droplet velocity. A short residence time of 0.039−0.085 s is credited in this study for faster mass transfer and reaction rate in RPB. The average droplet diameter decreases when the initial droplet ve... [more]

Keywords: bioconvection, boundary layer, nanofluid, stagnation-point flow, stretching/shrinking sheet
The study of laminar flow of heat and mass transfer over a moving surface in bionanofluid is of considerable interest because of its importance for industrial and technological processes such as fabrication of bio-nano materials and thermally enhanced media for bio-inspired fuel cells. Hence, the present work deals with the unsteady bionanofluid flow, heat and mass transfer past an impermeable stretching/shrinking sheet. The appropriate similarity solutions transform the boundary layer equations with three independent variables to a system of ordinary differential equations with one independent variable. The finite difference coupled with the Richardson extrapolation technique in the Maple software solves the reduced system, numerically. The rate of heat transfer is found to be higher when the flow is decelerated past a stretching sheet. It is understood that the state of shrinking sheet limits the rate of heat transfer and the density of the motile microorganisms in the stagnation reg... [more]

December 10, 2019 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, double flapper nozzle servo valve, Karman vortex, self-sustained flow oscillation
The oscillating flow field of the double nozzle flapper servo valve pre-stage is numerically analyzed through Large Eddy Simulation (LES) turbulent modeling with the previous grid independence verification. The vortex street flow phenomenon can be observed when the flow passes through the nozzle flapper channel, the vortex alternating in each side produces the periodical flow oscillation. The structural and flow parameter effects on the oscillating flow are emphasized, and it could be determined that the pressure on the flapper is nearly proportional to the flow velocity and inversely proportional to the actual distance between the flapper and the nozzle. On the other hand, the main frequency of oscillation decreases with the velocity and increases with the distance between the nozzle flapper. The main stage movement is further considered with a User Defined Function (UDF), and it could be determined that the influences of the structural and flow parameters on the flow oscillation are... Keywords: flow field, flow thermo-coupling, fluid-structure coupling, MSP (molten salt pump), thermal-structure coupling
In order to obtain the structural intensity under the operation conditions of MSP (molten salt pump), the rotor component of MSP is taken as the research object. In this paper, the influence of material properties change on the structural performance of MSP at different temperatures is analyzed. The stress distribution and strain distribution of MSP rotor components under different loads are investigated, and the intensity calculation of MSP rotor system is carried out to explore whether it meets the intensity requirements under high temperature operation, which lays a foundation for the high temperature test of MSP. The results show that the maximum deformation position of the blade working face appears at the outer edge of the impeller. When the fluid-structure coupling is applied, the blade strain law and the strain law during thermo-coupling are similar. The effect of the temperature field on the degree of blade deformation is not significant, provided that other factors remain the... [more]

Keywords: energy loss, entropy production, self-priming pump, vortex structure
The self-priming pump as an essential energy conversion equipment is widely used in hydropower and thermal power plants. The energy losses in the internal flow passage of the pump directly affect its work efficiency. Therefore, it is important to improve the internal flow characteristic of the pump. In the present work, a novel self-priming pump which starts without water is proposed; this pump can reduce the energy consumption as well as the time needed to start its operation. The spatial structure of the vortices in the pump is investigated by employing the Q criterion with the numerical solution of the vorticity transport equation. Based on the morphology, the vortices can be separated into three categories: Trailing Edge Vortex (TEV), Leading Edge Vortex (LEV) and Gap Leakage Vortex (GLV). Generally, the morphology of the TEV is more disorderly than that of LEV and GLV, and the intensity of TEV is significantly higher than that of the other two vortices. To determine the magnitude... Based on the study of the relationship between micro and macro parameters in the actual microstructure of the electrodes, a new multi-scale multi-field coupling model of battery monomer is established and the heat generation rate of the battery is obtained by detailed numerical simulation. According to the parameters of a certain electric vehicle and battery selected, the structure of the power battery pack and heat pipe cooling system is designed. By changing the fin spacing, the cooling scheme of the heat pipe is optimized, which ensures that the temperature difference is less than 5 K and the maximum temperature of the battery system is 306.26 K. It is found that increasing the discharge rate, the temperature difference increases rapidly. Increasing the air inlet velocity can improve the thermal uniformity of the battery pack, but changing the air inlet tem... [more]

Stirred bioreactors are commonly used unit operations in the pharmaceutical industry. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used in order to analyze the influence of the impeller configuration (Segment−Segment and Segment−Rushton impeller configurations) and the impeller rotational speed (an operational parameter) on the hydrodynamic behaviour and mixing performance of a bioreactor equipped with a double impeller. A relatively close agreement between the power values obtained from the CFD model and those measured experimentally was observed. Various parameters such as velocity profiles, stress generated by impellers due to the turbulence and velocity gradient, flow number, and mixing time were used to compare the CFD simulations. It was observed that the impeller’s RPM could change the intensity of the interaction between the impellers when a Segment−Rushton impeller was used. In general, increasing the RPM led to an increase in total power and the stress acting on the... [more]
