Lars Heber, Julian Schwab, Timo Knobelspies
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: automotive thermoelectric generator, CFD in thermoelectrics, engine exhaust heat recovery, thermo-economic analysis
Emissions from heavy-duty vehicles need to be reduced to decrease their impact on the climate and to meet future regulatory requirements. The use of a cost-optimized thermoelectric generator based on total cost of ownership is proposed for this vehicle class with natural gas engines. A holistic model environment is presented that includes all vehicle interactions. Simultaneous optimization of the heat exchanger and thermoelectric modules is required to enable high system efficiency. A generator design combining high electrical power (peak power of about 3000 W) with low negative effects was selected as a result. Numerical CFD and segmented high-temperature thermoelectric modules are used. For the first time, the possibility of an economical use of the system in the amortization period of significantly less than 2 years is available, with a fuel reduction in a conventional vehicle topology of already up to 2.8%. A significant improvement in technology maturity was achieved, and the powe... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, DPM, Francis turbine, sediment erosion
The operation of various types of turbomachines is importantly affected by sediment erosion. Francis turbines used for power generation typically suffer said effects due to the fact that they are used in sediment-laden rivers and are usually operated disregarding the long-term effect of the erosion on turbine performance. This investigation seeks to study the erosion rate for the main components of the turbines located at San Francisco hydropower plant in Pastaza, Ecuador. A sediment characterization study was performed in order to determine the properties of the particles present in Pastaza River and accurately predict their effect on the turbine flow passages. A numerical approach combining liquid−solid two-phase flow simulation and an erosion model was used to analyze the erosion rates at different operating conditions and determine wear patterns in the components. As expected, the results indicated that an increase in the erosion rate was obtained for higher intake flows. However,... [more]

Dima Bykhovsky
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: auto-covariance function, electical network, lognormal distribution, spectral coherence, switched-mode power supply (SMPS)
Switched-mode power supplies (SMPSs) are an important component in many electrical systems. As a highly non-linear device, an unavoidable side-effect of SMPS operation is its high harmonics power. One of the ways to model the harmonic power consumption profile is in terms of a random process. This paper addresses random process modeling with a corresponding probability density function (PDF), auto-covariance function (ACF) and spectral coherence. The consumed harmonics power was evaluated under different load conditions and is based on experimental results of current consumption from SMPSs. The analysis shows that harmonics power may be modeled by a lognormal distribution that is time-domain uncorrelated, and that has spectral-domain correlation modeled by a Gaussian radial basis function. Extensive discussion on the modeling results is also provided. Moreover, random simulation approach based on the modeling results was proposed.

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: anode off-gas recirculation (AOGR), hydrogen recirculation, sensitivity analysis, SOFC, SOFC simulation
Designing a configuration of an efficient solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system and operating it under appropriate conditions are important for achieving a highly efficient SOFC system. In our previous research, the system layout of a SOFC system with anode off-gas recirculation was suggested, and the system performance was examined using a numerical model. In the present study, the system operating conditions were optimized based on the system configuration and numerical model developed in the previous paper. First, a parametric sensitivity analysis of the system performance was investigated to demonstrate the main operating parameters. Consequently, the fuel flow rate and recirculation ratio were selected. Then, the available operating conditions, which keep the system below the operating limits and satisfy the desired system performance (Ufuel > 0.7 and ηelec > 45%) were discovered. Finally, optimized operating conditions were suggested for three operating modes: optimized electrical... [more]

Keywords: chlor-alkali membrane electrolysis, Dynamic Modelling, Simulation, validation, wind energy source
Renewable energy sources are becoming a greater component of the electrical mix, while being significantly more volatile than conventional energy sources. As a result, net stability and availability pose significant challenges. Energy-intensive processes, such as chlor-alkali electrolysis, can potentially adjust their consumption to the available power, which is known as demand side management or demand response. In this study, a dynamic model of a chlor-alkali membrane cell is developed to assess the flexible potential of the membrane cell. Several improvements to previously published models were made, making the model more representative of state-of-the-art CA plants. By coupling the model with a wind power profile, the current and potential level over the course of a day was simulated. The simulation results show that the required ramp rates are within the regular operating possibilities of the plant for most of the time and that the electrolyte concentrations in the cell can be kep... Keywords: 3D CFD modeling, additive manufacturing, air-to-water HX, cross-media, ellipsoidal tube banks, experiment
In order to meet increasing power-dissipation requirements of the electronics industry, compact, low-cost, and lightweight heat exchangers (HXs) are desired. With proper design, materials, and manufacture, polymer composite heat exchangers could meet these requirements. This paper presents a novel crossflow air-to-water, low-cost, and lightweight metal-polymer composite HX. This HX, which is entirely additively manufactured, utilizes a novel cross-media approach that provides direct heat exchange between air and liquid sides by using connecting fins. A robust numerical model was developed, which includes the dimensional effects of additive manufacturing. The study consists of a simplified 3D CFD model based on ellipsoidal-shaped staggered tube banks for the laminar range. It then uses an analytical approach to compute entire HX performance. The model is validated experimentally within 8% for thermal performance, 12% for air-side impedance, and 18% for water-side impedance. Finally, HX... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: car park, electric vehicle, low-power chargers, recuperative braking energy, sharing economy, train power system, varying the charger charging power
Electric vehicles represent an innovation in mobility that can help significantly reduce greenhouse emissions and mitigate climate change. However, replacing internal combustion with electric vehicles is not enough. This replacement needs to be complemented with a change in the energy mix of individual countries towards renewable energy sources and efficient use of electricity generated as a secondary product. Recuperative braking energy from trains can serve as one source of such secondary energy. Following an analysis of recuperative energy generated and analysis of charging requirements of individual electric vehicles, the paper proposes a model of a charging site near train stations. Using this energy to charge electric vehicles helps to reduce energy consumption from the electricity grid and thus reduce carbon emissions. Compared to other articles, the proposed model ensures the efficient use of recuperative braking energy from trains by using the variable charging power function;... [more]

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, moonpool type floaters, theoretical formulation, viscous effects
Moonpool-type floaters were initially proposed for applications such as artificial islands or as protecting barriers around a small area enabling work at the inner surface to be carried out in relatively calm water. In recent years, a growing interest on such structures has been noted, especially in relation to their use as heaving wave energy converters or as oscillating water column (OWC) devices for the extraction of energy from waves. Furthermore, in the offshore marine industry, several types of vessels are frequently constructed with moonpools. The present paper deals with the hydrodynamics of bottomless cylindrical bodies having vertical symmetry axis and floating in a water of finite depth. Two computation methods were implemented and compared: a theoretical approach solving analytically the corresponding diffraction problem around the moonpool floater and a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver, which considers the viscous effects near the sharp edges of the body (vortex s... Keywords: Pd catalyst, thermal decomposition kinetics, zinc sulfate
The sulfur−iodine thermochemical water-splitting cycle is a promising route proposed for hydrogen production. The decomposition temperature remains a challenge in the process. Catalysts, such as Pd supported on Al2O3, are being considered to decrease reaction temperatures. However, little is known regarding the kinetic behavior of such systems. In this work, zinc sulfate thermal decomposition was studied through non-isothermal thermogravimetric analysis to understand the effect of a catalyst within the sulfur−iodine reaction system context. The findings of this analysis were also related to a thermodynamic assessment. It was observed that the presence of Pd/Al2O3 modified the reaction mechanism, possibly with some intermediate reactions that were suppressed or remarkably accelerated. The proposed model suggests that zinc sulfate transformation occurred in two sequential stages without the Pd-based material. Activation energy values of 238 and 368 kJ·mol−1 were calculated. In the presen... [more]

Keywords: gas-liquid interface shape, hydrodynamics model, liquid holdup, pressure drop, slug flow
Gas−liquid flow in a pipeline is a very common. Slug two-phase flow is dominated in the case of slightly upward flow (+0.25°) and considered to be the comprehensive flow configuration, and can be in close contact with all the other flow patterns. The models of different flow patterns can be unified. Precise prediction of the slug flow is crucial for proper design and operation. In this paper, we develop hydrodynamics unified modeling for gas−liquid two-phase slug flow, and the bubble and droplet entrainment is optimized. For the important parameters (wall and interfacial friction factors, slug translational velocity and average slug length), the correlations of these parameters are optimized. Furthermore, the related parameters for liquid droplet and gas bubble entrainment are given. Accounting for the gas−liquid interface shape, hydrodynamics models, i.e., the flat interface model (FIM) and the double interface model (DIM), of liquid film in the slug body are applied and compared with... Keywords: air source heat pump, integrated PVT-ASHP system, photovoltaic-thermal, small-scale building, zero energy building
The concept of zero energy buildings (ZEBs) has recently been actively introduced in the building sector, globally, to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions. For the implementation of ZEBs, renewable energy systems, such as solar collectors, photovoltaic (PV) systems, and ground source heat pump (GSHP) systems, have been used. The system performance of solar collectors and PV systems are dependent on the weather conditions. A GSHP system requires a large area for boring machines and mud pump machines. Therefore, inhabitants of an existing small-scale buildings hesitate to introduce GSHP systems due to the difficulties in installation and limited construction area. This study proposes an integrate photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) and air source heat pump (ASHP) system for realizing ZEB in an existing small-scale building. In order to evaluate the applicability of the integrated PVT-ASHP system, a dynamic simulation model that combines the PVT-ASHP system model and the building load m... [more]

Keywords: conductor temperature, finite element simulation, high-voltage cable, RDTS
As a key state parameter of high-voltage cables, conductor temperature is an essential determinant of the current carrying capacity of cables, but in practice, this is difficult to measure directly during the operation of high-voltage cables. In this paper, the electromagnetic-thermal coupling analysis model of a 110 kV high-voltage cable is established using the finite element analysis software COMSOL. By analyzing the temperature distribution law of high-voltage cables under different load currents and ambient temperatures, the relationship between the change in the high-voltage cable surface temperature and the conductor temperature is deduced, which allows the monitoring of the high-voltage cable conductor temperature. Taking the 110 kV cable of the Yanzhong line in Shanxi Province as an example and using the electromagnetic-thermal coupling temperature field analysis method, the conductor temperature of the high-voltage cable can be measured using the data obtained from the cable... Keywords: AdaBoost, bulk volume irreducible, clastic rocks, CMR, free fluid index, log generation, Machine Learning, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) logs, permeability, Western Australia
A nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) logging tool can provide important rock and fluid properties that are necessary for a reliable reservoir evaluation. Pore size distribution based on T2 relaxation time and resulting permeability are among those parameters that cannot be provided by conventional logging tools. For wells drilled before the 1990s and for many recent wells there is no NMR data available due to the tool availability and the logging cost, respectively. This study used a large database of combinable magnetic resonance (CMR) to assess the performance of several well-known machine learning (ML) methods to generate some of the NMR tool’s outputs for clastic rocks using typical well-logs as inputs. NMR tool’s outputs, such as clay bound water (CBW), irreducible pore fluid (known as bulk volume irreducible, BVI), producible fluid (known as the free fluid index, FFI), logarithmic mean of T2 relaxation time (T2LM), irreducible water saturation (Swirr), and permeability from Coates... Keywords: climate change, comfort, dwelling, heatwave, houses, overheating, temperature, UK
The global climate is warming rapidly, with increasing frequency of severe events including heatwaves. Building insulation standards are improving to reduce emissions, but this can also lead to more overheating. Historically, UK house designers have not included adaptation measures to limit this. Most studies of the problem have had limited geographical or future climate scope. This study considers the comfort performance of a small modern house, in detached, semi-detached, and terrace (row) forms, but otherwise identical. Overheating is evaluated according to established criteria, including night-time bedroom hours over 26 °C. Simulations are carried out using median future weather years for current, 2030s, 2050s, and 2080s climates under medium- and high-emission scenarios for 14 regions of the UK. The results show a very large increase in overheating by the 2080s in all regions. With solar shading and natural ventilation, overheating is reduced considerably, maintaining comfort in m... [more]
