Design and Thermal Modeling of Modular Hybrid Excited Double-Sided Linear Flux Switching Machine
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: efficiency, FEA, ferrite magnet, genetic optimization, LPMC model, modular stator
This paper presents a Hybrid Excited Double-Sided Linear Flux Switching Machine (HEDSLFSM) with a crooked tooth modular stator. Generally, the conventional stators are made of a full-length iron core, increasing manufacturing costs and iron losses. Higher iron losses result in lower efficiency and lower overall performance. A U-shaped modular stator with a crooked tooth is used to lower iron consumption and increase the machine’s efficiency. Ferrite magnets are used to replace rare earth magnets, which also reduces the machine cost. Two DC excitation windings are used above and below the ferrite magnet to reduce the PM volume. 2D electromagnetic performance analysis is done to observe the key performance indices. Geometric optimization is used to optimize the Split Ratio (S.R), DC winding slot area (DCw), and AC winding slot area (ACw). Stator Tooth Width (STW), space between the modules (S.S.), and crooked angle (α) are optimized through JMAG in-built Genetic Algorithm (G.A.) optimiza... [more]

Three-Dimensional CFD Simulations of Start-Up Processes of a Pump-Turbine Considering Governor Regulation
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: no-load condition, pump-turbine, regulating system, s-shaped characteristic curve, start-up
The pumped-storage power station is an efficient stability regulator of the power grid. However, due to the instability of the pump-turbine in the S-shaped characteristic region, rotational speed fluctuation is easy to occur in the speed no-load condition, making synchronization with and connection to the grid difficult. To investigate the key factors of these difficult grid connections, the start-up processes of a practical pump-turbine under the lowest head condition were simulated by using the three-dimensional CFD method, in which the governor regulating equations with different regulating parameters were integrated successfully. The results show that the working points oscillate with the fluctuations of rotational speed, discharge, and torque, and different regulating parameters have a significant influence on the dynamic histories. In addition, the internal flow patterns, especially the backflows at the runner inlet, keep apparent values at the middle span (0.5 span) but have reg... [more]

Design Issues of a Rotating to Linear Motion Magnetic Converter for Short-Distance Transport Applications
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: electromagnetic modeling, finite element analysis, linear motion, loss calculation, magnetic gears, permanent magnet machines
This paper discusses some design issues of a magnetic rotating to linear motion converter (RLMC), suitable for the propulsion system of a short-distance low-capacity vehicle. It basically operates like a magnetic rack, which executes the contactless conversion of the motor torque into a propulsion thrust, deriving from the interaction of on-board permanent magnet (PM) modules and stationary ferromagnetic steel pieces. A design procedure is set up that deals with both the PM module arrangement and the geometric shape of the steel pieces to optimize different performance aspects. A simplified modeling based on 2D transient finite element analyses is carried out to determine the thrust profile and the RLMC losses, which are essential to assess its practical feasibility. Finally, the characteristics as functions of the load angle and speed are determined to enable the prediction of the dynamic power exchange and then of the net energy demand useful to size the on-board source.

Simulation of Crop Yields Grown under Agro-Photovoltaic Panels: A Case Study in Chonnam Province, South Korea
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: AVP, crop model, DSSAT, GCSM, Simulation, yield
Agro-photovoltaic systems are of interest to the agricultural industry because they can produce both electricity and crops in the same farm field. In this study, we aimed to simulate staple crop yields under agro-photovoltaic panels (AVP) based on the calibration of crop models in the decision support system for agricultural technology (DSSAT) 4.6 package. We reproduced yield data of paddy rice, barley, and soybean grown in AVP experimental fields in Bosung and Naju, Chonnam Province, South Korea, using CERES-Rice, CERES-Barley, and CROPGRO-Soybean models. A geospatial crop simulation modeling (GCSM) system, developed using the crop models, was then applied to simulate the regional variations in crop yield according to solar radiation reduction scenarios. Simulated crop yields agreed with the corresponding measured crop yields with root mean squared errors of 0.29-ton ha−1 for paddy rice, 0.46-ton ha−1 for barley, and 0.31-ton ha−1 for soybean, showing no significant differences accord... Exploring of the Incompatibility of Marine Residual Fuel: A Case Study Using Machine Learning Methods
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: group composition, Machine Learning, marine residual fuels, mixing fuels, sedimentation
Providing quality fuel to ships with reduced SOx content is a priority task. Marine residual fuels are one of the main sources of atmospheric pollution during the operation of ships and sea tankers. Hence, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has established strict regulations for the sulfur content of marine fuels. One of the possible technological solutions allowing for adherence to the sulfur content limits is use of mixed fuels. However, it carries with it risks of ingredient incompatibilities. This article explores a new approach to the study of active sedimentation of residual and mixed fuels. An assessment of the sedimentation process during mixing, storage, and transportation of marine fuels is made based on estimation three-dimensional diagrams developed by the authors. In an effort to find the optimal solution, studies have been carried out to determine the influence of marine residual fuel compositions on sediment formation via machine learning algorithms. Thus, a m... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, heat transfer, ionanofluids, Nusselt number, temperature-dependent properties
The heat transfer performances of ionic liquids [C4mpyrr][NTf2] and ionanofluids with Al2O3 nanoparticles under a laminar flow regime, and with constant heat flux on the tube wall is numerically modeled and analyzed for three values of initial/inlet temperature and for two Reynolds numbers. Heat transfer characteristics were considered by analyzing the temperature distribution along the upper wall, as well as by analyzing the Nusselt number and heat transfer coefficient. The results obtained numerically were validated using Shah’s equation for ionic liquid. Thermophysical properties were temperature-dependent, and obtained by curve-fitting the experimental values of the thermophysical properties. Furthermore, the same set of results was calculated for the ionic liquid and ionanofluids with constant thermophysical properties. It is concluded that the assumption that thermophysical properties are constant has a significant influence on the heat transfer performance parameters of both ion... [more]

The Analytical Comparative Analysis of Electromagnetic Characteristics of Four Typical Radial Flux Permanent Magnet Eddy Current Couplers
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: comparative analysis, eddy current coupler, electromagnetic characteristics, permanent magnet, permeance function, squirrel cage
The analytical model of a permanent magnet eddy current coupler (PMECC) is mainly used for evaluation of its characteristics and the initial optimization of design. Based on the equivalent magnetic circuit method, this paper carries out analytical modeling for four typical PMECCs composed of surface-mounted and interior permanent magnet, slotted and non-slotted conductor rotors, which provides a theoretical basis for the subsequent research in this paper. The basic electromagnetic characteristics of the PMECCs are investigated by the established analytical model. Simultaneously, the analytical results about permeance, flux density, torque and power are verified by FEA simulation. The analysis results show that the slotted CR will obtain a much higher power density, and the iron loss mainly exists in the CRs. In addition, the analytical and FEA results agree well, which proves the reliability of the proposed, nearly unified analytical model.

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: dynamic systems, field programmable gate array, hardware description language, real-time simulation, reconfigurable computing
Real-Time Digital Simulation (RTDS) is a powerful tool in modeling and analyzing electrical and drive systems because it provides an efficient and accurate process. There are several hardware devices for this type of simulation; however, their high costs have led to the increasing use of more affordable and reconfigurable technologies. In this context, many logic blocks and storage elements make the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) an ideal device to perform RTDS. This work proposes a technique to embed a real-time digital simulator in an FPGA through Hardware Description Language (HDL) since it provides liberty in the architecture choice and no dependency on commercial ready-made hardware−software packages. The approach proposed focuses on system design developing with expression tree graph, synthesizing and verifying, prioritizing the performance and design accuracy concerning area and power consumption. Thus, the result acquisition occurs at a time step considered in real-time.... [more]

Availability Projections of Hydroelectric Power Plants through Monte Carlo Simulation
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Availability Factor, forced shutdown, generating units, operation optimization, risk analysis
The present work proposes a Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) to obtain availability projections for Hydroelectric Power Plants (HPP), based mainly on regulatory aspects involving the Availability Factor (AFA). The main purpose of the simulation is to generate scenarios to obtain statistics for risk analysis and decision-making in relation to the HPP. The proposed methodology consists of two steps, firstly, the optimization of the maintenance schedule of the hydroelectric plant is carried out, in order to allocate the mandatory maintenance in the simulation horizon. Then, for the MCS, scenarios of forced shutdowns of the Generating Units (GU) will be generated, which directly influence the operation and, consequently, the availability of the HPP. The scenarios will be inserted into an operation optimization model, which considers the impact of forced shutdown samples on the MCS. The proposed modeling was applied using real data from the Santo Antônio HPP, which is one of the largest hydroel... [more]

CFD Study on the Ventilation Effectiveness in a Public Toilet under Three Ventilation Methods
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: air exchange efficiency, Computational Fluid Dynamics, indoor air quality, mean age of air, public toilet
The indoor air quality (IAQ) of severely polluted toilets is associated with the transmission of diseases. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods and experimental measurements were used to analyze the diffusion characteristics of pollutants. This study investigated the diffusion characteristics and normalized concentration of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide pollutants under three ventilation systems—mixing ventilation (MV), personalized ventilation (PV), and impinging jet ventilation (IJV)—in a public toilet. The mean age of air (MAA) and air exchange efficiency (AEE) were also analyzed in our study. The results show that the MV scheme has a poor removal effect on pollutants compared with PV and IJV. IJV has advantages in reducing the normalized concentration of pollutants and improving the IAQ. Increasing the number of air changes per hour (ACH) may lead to a longer MAA and reduced air exchange efficiency. Choosing an appropriate number of air changes is very important to improve the... Rotating Instabilities in a Low-Speed Single Compressor Rotor Row with Varying Blade Tip Clearance
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: dynamic mode decomposition, flow dynamics, low-speed compressor, rotating instabilities, tip clearance flow
When a compressor is throttled to the near stall point, rotating instability (RI) is often observed as significant increases of amplitude within a narrow frequency band which can be regarded as a pre-stall disturbance. In the current study, a single compressor rotor row with varying blade tip clearance (1.3%, 2.6% and 4.3% chord length) was numerically simulated using the zonal large eddy simulation model. The mesh with six blade passages was selected to capture the proper dynamic feature after being validated in comparison to the measured data, and the dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) approach was applied to the numerical temporal snapshots. In the experimental results, RIs are detected in the configurations with middle and large tip gaps (2.6% and 4.3% chord length), and the corresponding characterized frequencies are about 1/2 and 1/3 of the blade passing frequency, respectively. Simulations provide remarkable performance in capturing the measured flow features, and the DMD modes co... [more]

The Condition of Photovoltaic Modules under Random Operation Parameters
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: inefficiency, Modelling, photovoltaic cell, randomness, residual method
The paper presents an original method underlying an efficient tool for assessing the condition of photovoltaic (PV) modules, in particular, those made of amorphous cells. Significantly random changes in operational parameters characterize amorphous cell operation and cause them to be challenging to test, especially in working conditions. To develop the method, the authors modified the residual method with incorporated histograms. The proposed method has been verified through experiments that show the usefulness of the proposed approach. It significantly minimizes the risk of false diagnostic information in assessing the condition of photovoltaic modules. Based on the proposed methods, the inference results confirm the effectiveness of the concept for evaluating the degree of failure of the photovoltaic module described in the paper.

Flow Stability in a Miniature Centrifugal Pump under the Periodic Pulse Flow
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: energy gradient method, incoming periodic pulse flow, miniature centrifugal pump, transient flow stability
The flow behavior inside a miniature centrifugal pump, under a periodic pulse flow rate, was studied by means of numerical simulation. For a given incoming periodic pulse flow with a sine wave, the performance of the centrifugal pump was investigated in the section with increasing flow and the section with decreasing flow, and the special points of the flow rate and the periodic flow were identified. Further, the energy gradient method and the Q-criterion were adopted to analyze the internal vertical structure and flow stability. It was found that the regions with large variations in velocity and total pressure were mainly located at the leading edge of the suction surface and the middle area of the pressure surface of the blades. Irregular pressure fluctuation frequency under the periodic pulse flow was shown; this was mainly concentrated in the low-frequency zones close to the impeller’s rotational frequency. In addition, for the same flow rate in the periodic pulse flow, the pressur... [more]

Simulation and Modelling of Transient Electric Fields in HVDC Insulation Systems Based on Polarization Current Measurements
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: charging–discharging current modelling, DC cables, electric fields, HVDC insulation systems
Simulating and modelling electric field dynamics in the insulation of medium- and high-voltage DC electrical systems is needed to support insulation design optimization and to evaluate the impact of voltage transients on ageing mechanisms and insulation reliability. In order to perform accurate simulations, appropriate physical models must be adopted for the insulating material properties, particularly conductivity, which drives the electric field in a steady-state condition and contributes to determining the field behavior during voltage and load transients. In order to model insulation conductivity, polarization, and conduction, mechanisms must be inferred through charging and discharging current measurements, generally performed at different values of electric field and temperatures in flat specimens of the material under study. In general, both mechanisms are present, but one of them may be predominant with respect to the other depending on type of material. In this paper, we showe... [more]

Impact of Cryogenics on Cavitation through an Orifice: A Review
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cavitation, cryogenics, instabilities, multiphase modeling, propulsion systems
Cryogenic cavitation affects the operation of liquid propulsion systems during the first phase of a launch. Its effects within orifices or turbopumps can range from mild instabilities to catastrophic damages to the structures, jeopardizing the launch itself. Therefore, to ensure the proper designing of propulsion systems, cavitation phenomena cannot be neglected. Although hydrodynamic cavitation has been studied for decades, the impact of the nature of the fluid has been sparsely investigated. Therefore, this review, beginning from the basic concepts of cavitation, analyzes the literature dedicated to hydrodynamic cryogenic cavitation through an orifice. Our review provides a clear vision of the state-of-the-art from experimental and modeling viewpoints, identifies the knowledge gaps in the literature, and proposes a way to further investigate cryogenic cavitation in aerospace science.

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: 1st-, 2nd, 3rd- and 4th-order sensitivities, adjoint model, arbitrarily-high-order (nth-order) comprehensive adjoint sensitivity analysis methodology, forward model, nth-order sensitivities, sensitivity analysis and the curse of dimensionality
This work presents the mathematical framework of the nth-Order Comprehensive Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis Methodology for Response-Coupled Forward/Adjoint Linear Systems (abbreviated as “nth-CASAM-L”), which is conceived for obtaining the exact expressions of arbitrarily-high-order (nth-order) sensitivities of a generic system response with respect to all of the parameters (including boundary and initial conditions) underlying the respective forward/adjoint systems. Since many of the most important responses for linear systems involve the solutions of both the forward and the adjoint linear models that correspond to the respective physical system, the sensitivity analysis of such responses makes it necessary to treat linear systems in their own right, rather than treating them as particular cases of nonlinear systems. This is in contradistinction to responses for nonlinear systems, which can depend only on the forward functions, since nonlinear operators do not admit bona-fide adjoint... [more]

Sensitivity Analysis and Power Systems: Can We Bridge the Gap? A Review and a Guide to Getting Started
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: bibliometric study, decision-making, global sensitivity analysis, literature review, local sensitivity analysis, Monte Carlo simulation, power system, sensitivity analysis, uncertainty analysis, variance-based sensitivity analysis
Power systems are increasingly affected by various sources of uncertainty at all levels. The investigation of their effects thus becomes a critical challenge for their design and operation. Sensitivity Analysis (SA) can be instrumental for understanding the origins of system uncertainty, hence allowing for a robust and informed decision-making process under uncertainty. The SA value as a support tool for model-based inference is acknowledged; however, its potential is not fully realized yet within the power system community. This is due to an improper use of long-established SA practices, which sometimes prevent an in-depth model sensitivity investigation, as well as to partial communication between the SA community and the final users, ultimately hindering non-specialists’ awareness of the existence of effective strategies to tackle their own research questions. This paper aims at bridging the gap between SA and power systems via a threefold contribution: (i) a bibliometric study of t... [more]
