Subject: Environment
Keywords: active power filter, cascaded two-level VSI, hybrid MLI, multilevel inverter
Different multilevel converter topologies have been presented for achieving more output voltage steps, hence improving system performance and lowering costs. In this paper, a hybrid multilevel inverter (MLI) topology is proposed for active-power-filter applications. The proposed MLI is a combination of two standard topologies: the cascaded H-bridge and the three-phase cascaded voltage source inverter. This configuration enhances the voltage levels of the proposed MLI while using fewer switches than typical MLI topologies. The proposed MLI was developed in the MATLAB/Simulink environment, and a closed-loop control technique was used to achieve a unity power factor connection of the PV modules to the grid, as well as to compensate for harmonics caused by nonlinear loads. To demonstrate that the configuration was working correctly and that the control was precise, the proposed MLI was constructed in a laboratory. A MicroLabBox real-time controller handled data acquisition and switch gatin... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: barriers, housing professionals, nearly zero-energy housing, NZEB, perceptions, sustainability transition
In 2010, the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive announced that all new buildings are to be nearly zero-energy as of January 2021. Having reached year 2022, it can be said that the transition has proven to be slower than anticipated. Transition research has long acknowledged the potential impact of the human factor in the process of change. While there is a relative wealth of literature on end-users and their perceptions as recipients of change within the demand end of the market, research on professionals and their perceptions as actors in the process of change is limited. Thus, this study looks at the human factor in the supply end of the market by bringing professionals’ perceptions to the forefront in its investigation of barriers to the implementation and uptake of nearly zero-energy housing in practice. As part of the project entitled Housing 4.0 Energy: Affordable and Sustainable Housing through Digitization, data were collected through a focus group and semi-structured in... [more]

Keywords: blasting, detonation velocity, explosives, underground mining
Explosives are commonly used in the mining industry to extract minerals from hard rock deposits. Therefore, an efficient explosive should ensure that the appropriate blast outcome is achieved, taking into account the desired rock-breaking parameters and the costs of drilling and blasting works. Depending on the type of deposit and follow-up processes, a proper blast result may be characterized by fragmentation, muckpile shape, overbreaks, etc. Industry has struggled to respond to the demand for bulk emulsion explosives with improved energetic parameters, having so far been unable to do so safely, effectively, and cost-efficiently. Methods of improving blasting parameters mainly rely on introducing a variety of additives to the emulsion explosive formulation during production, which creates additional hazards at that stage. Alternative, safe methods of achieving an improved energetic performance of emulsion explosives are, therefore, highly desirable. This paper is focused on one such p... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, carbon dioxide emissions, energy consumption, environmental Kuznets curve, European Union, urbanization
Nowadays, increased urbanization is visible in most European Union countries. At the same time, it can be noticed that in the studied period (2000−2018), GDP per capita increased, and CO2 emissions per capita and energy consumption per capita decreased. These trends should be assessed in an unequivocally positive way. Considering these trends, especially with regard to economic development, our research goal is to answer the following questions: is there a long-run relationship between urbanization, energy consumption, economic growth, and carbon dioxide emissions, and what roles do urbanization and energy consumption play in the concept of the environmental Kuznets curve? This study aims to contribute to this growing area of research by exploring the European Union countries in the period covering the accession of new member states from Central Europe that needs intensifying European environmental policy. In order to test cointegration, we used Pedroni and Westerlund’s panel tests. To... [more]

Keywords: comparison, field measurement, open-window gap, vehicle thermal environment
To avoid a sharp rise in temperature in the cabin of parked vehicles exposed to solar radiation, experienced drivers leave some windows partly open when the vehicle is parked in the sunlight to achieve cooling through natural ventilation. However, the effectiveness of this measure to reduce the temperature under different weather conditions has not been verified. To this end, this study investigates the effect of open windows on the thermal environment of a vehicle under different environmental conditions. A field measurement, in which two identical vehicles with and without window gaps were used, was carried out in Daxing District, Beijing. The measurements were conducted for 15 days under different window gaps and ambient conditions. The results revealed that open windows resulted in a maximum temperature reduction of 6.7 °C in cabin air temperature under high temperature and high solar radiation, while only 0.6 °C can be reduced under low temperature and low solar radiation. It is known that the energy transition can be achieved not only with the use of renewable energy sources but also with a new conception and management of the electricity system. Renewable energy communities are then introduced as organizations for maximizing the self-consumption of energy produced from renewable energy sources. To ensure that these energy communities can operate, there is a need for enabling technologies that allow for monitoring, data and algorithms processing as well as the enabling of the same algorithms. There exists a huge confusion in the actual technologies useful to implement the energy communities. This paper first describes and groups the main enabling technologies, analyzing the services that can be offered. The scope is to emphasize the importance of having accurate, efficient and effective technologies that allow the implementation of such communities, underlining how such technologies interact with each other. Using such technologies is important to obser... [more]

As a country with not only significant production potential but also fragmented land ownership, the Kyrgyz Republic struggles with environmental efficiency, which is a strategic element of environmental management in agricultural production. The objective of this study was to assess the environmental efficiency of sheep’s wool when used as a fertilizer in bean production in northern Kyrgyzstan. In this study, the efficiency indicator was taken to be GHG emissions per functional unit of product, using a proprietary methodology for calculating GHG emissions to determine the true value of this material as a source of soil nutrients and organic matter. Two experimental factors were used in the experiment: fertilizer type and fertilizer rate. Fertilization with sheep wool resulted in a 15% higher bean yield compared to when fertilized with mineral fertilizers at a comparable rate, converted to pure nitrogen. By using sheep wool as a source of mineral nutrients for the plants, the carbon foo... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: capillary pressure, carbonate rock, fractal dimension, pore-throats structure, reservoir classification and evaluation
The Carboniferous reservoir KT-II layer in the Eastern margin of the Pre-Caspian Basin was formed in the open platform sedimentary environment and marked by a complicated pore-throats structure. Understanding the main controls on the carbonate reservoir quality is of great significance for reservoir classification and a relevant production prediction. This study focuses on revealing reservoir pore-throats structure’s fractal characteristics by analyzing the mercury intrusion capillary pressure (MICP), with the integration of the pore-throats radius’ distribution data. The relationship between fractal dimensions and reservoir parameters such as physical properties, mercury median saturation pressure (Pc50) and the proportion of large-size (radius > 0.1 μm) pores demonstrate that the lower fractal dimension corresponds not only to core plug samples with higher permeability, but also to lower Pc50 and a higher proportion of large pore-throats. Three classes of carbonate reservoir with dif... [more]

This article presents the results of experimental and computational studies of the performance of a car with a gasoline engine with spark ignition when retrofitted with a system of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). To analyze the impact of the use of LPG instead of gasoline, the mathematical model of the car’s movement according to the modes of the European driving cycle has been refined. It was established that when using LPG for a car in the driving cycle, fuel consumption in energy units decreases by 10.38%. Gas consumption, determined in mass units, is lower than gasoline consumption. In load modes, this difference is about 8% and in idle mode, it reaches 16−18%. The adequacy of the mathematical model is confirmed by experimental studies of the car on modern equipment with the measurement of fuel efficiency and environmental performance in motion, according to the specified cycle. The deviation of the calculated fuel consumption from the results of experimental studies does not exceed... [more]

Keywords: impact assessment results, ISO 14040-14044, life cycle assessment, semi-aerobic landfill
The potential impacts and the environmental performance of the semi-aerobic landfill technology were assessed through the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. Project data that referred to a hypothetical Italian plant design were used and ISO 14040/14044 standards were applied. All the life cycle phases were considered, from landfill construction to filling, aftercare, closure and conversion for future use. All the landfill processes and the inflow of materials, energy and rainwater, and the outflow of biogas and leachate, were included in the system boundaries. The results show that the overall environmental impacts associated to semi-aerobic landfill are primarily due to the filling and aftercare phases, but the impacts related to construction and closure phases are not negligible. The contribution analysis underlines the processes with major responsibility within the environmental profile, while the normalization of results demonstrates what are the environmental categories on w... In comparison to other methods, valorising food waste through pyrolysis appears to be the most promising because it is environmentally friendly, fast, and has a low infrastructure footprint. On the other hand, understanding the pyrolytic kinetic behaviour of feedstocks is critical to the design of pyrolysers. As a result, the pyrolytic degradation of some common kitchen vegetable waste, such as tomato, cucumber, carrot, and their blend, has been investigated in this study using a thermogravimetric analyser. The most prevalent model fitting method, Coats−Redfern, was used for the kinetic analysis, and the various mechanisms have been investigated. Some high-quality fitting mechanisms were identified and used to estimate the thermodynamic properties. As the generation of pyrolysis gases for chemical/energy production is important to the overall process applicability, TGA-coupled mass spectrometry was used to analyse the pyrogas for individual and blend samples. By comparing the devolatil... [more]

Keywords: human-centricity, Industry 5.0, resilience, Society 5.0, Sustainability
In the era of Industry 4.0, manufacturing and production systems were revolutionized by increasing operational efficiency and developing and implementing new business models, services, and products. Concretely, the milestone set for Industry 4.0 was to improve the sustainability and efficiency of production systems. By extension, the emphasis was focused on both the digitization and the digitalization of systems, providing room for further improvement. However, the current technological evolution is more system/machine-oriented, rather than human-oriented. Thus, several countries have begun orchestrating initiatives towards the design and development of the human-centric aspect of technologies, systems, and services, which has been coined as Industry 5.0. The impact of Industry 5.0 will extend to societal transformation, which eventually leads to the generation of a new society, the Society 5.0. The developments will be focused on the social and human-centric aspect of the tools and te... [more]

The successful and fast development and deployment of renewable energy and greenhouse gas reduction technologies is a continuing and structural challenge. The deployment of these technologies is slowed down and sometimes even stalled due to societal challenges like public resistance, lack of appropriate policy and regulations, unsolid business cases and uncertainty concerning the impact on the environment. In this paper we elaborate on societal aspects that influence technology development and deployment and introduce the societal embeddedness level (SEL) framework. Building upon the technology readiness level (TRL), the SEL framework enables the assessment of the current level of societal embeddedness of energy technologies in order to identify the societal aspects which need to be taken into account to accelerate deployment of energy technologies. The SEL framework takes into account four societal dimensions (impact on the environment, stakeholder involvement, policy and regulations,... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: excess heat, heat demand, industrial energy demand, industrial subsectors, spatial analysis, waste heat
Excess heat can make an important contribution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the heating and cooling sector. Due to the local character of heat, the local excess heat potential is decisive for using excess heat. However, the spatially distributed potential and the subdivision of the potential into different subsectors have not been sufficiently investigated in Germany. Here we analyse the excess heat potential in Germany according to different subsectors and spatially distributed to the municipal level. We use data of more than 115,000 records on exhaust gas and fuel input from over 11,000 industrial sites. We calculate the site-specific excess heat potential and check its plausibility using the fuel input of the respective industrial sites. Finally, we compare the excess heat potential with the residential heat demand at the municipal level. Our results show that the excess heat potential in Germany is about 36.6 TWh/a, and that in 148 municipalities, the annual excess heat po... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: energy security, Granger causality, green bonds, sustainable development goals
Many countries are pursuing energy security (ES) in their economies while implementing sustainable development goals (SDGs). Relevant policies may include: (1) access to efficient alternative and preferably renewable energy sources (RESs); and (2) reductions in conventionally obtained energy consumption. As the demand for energy is growing and alternative energy resources are expensive, new ways of financing projects to improve ES are of special interest, e.g., issuing green bonds. In such cases, the obtained funds are allocated to projects that can both improve ES and help to achieve SDGs. The aim of the study was to explore the dependences (in the sense of Granger causality) between the green bond (GB) market, different aspects of sustainable development, as measured by global indicators taken from a family of environmental NASDAQ OMX indices, and ES represented by crude oil prices. The methodology is based on the vector autoregression model. The findings reveal evidence of a short-t... [more]

Keywords: asphaltenes, electron paramagnetic resonance, HYperfine Sublevel CORrelation Spectroscopy, vanadyl complexes
The purpose of this work is to analyze the electron−nuclear interactions of the vanadyl-porphyrin (VP) complexes in oil asphaltenes. Asphaltenes from the Athabasca oil sands were studied by HYperfine Sublevel CORrelation Spectroscopy (HYSCORE) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). It makes it possible to resolve and interpret complex hyperfine spectra of intrinsic VP with strong and weak hyperfine interactions between the electron magnetic moment and various nuclear spins (1H, 14N, 51V). The main parameters of spin-Hamiltonian for the VP spin system are determined. The axially symmetric structure of the VP complexes is revealed, and the local nuclear environment of the paramagnetic center is investigated. The results can be used for the study of asphaltene electron−nuclear structure and asphaltene aggregates with the aim of elucidating asphaltenes’ transformation(s) under the influence of external treatment.
