Monitoring Offshore CO2 Sequestration Using Marine CSEM Methods; Constraints Inferred from Field- and Laboratory-Based Gas Hydrate Studies
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: carbon sequestration, CO2 offshore storage, gas hydrates, marine CSEM
Offshore geological sequestration of CO2 offers a viable approach for reducing greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. Strategies include injection of CO2 into the deep-ocean or ocean-floor sediments, whereby depending on pressure−temperature conditions, CO2 can be trapped physically, gravitationally, or converted to CO2 hydrate. Energy-driven research continues to also advance CO2-for-CH4 replacement strategies in the gas hydrate stability zone (GHSZ), producing methane for natural gas needs while sequestering CO2. In all cases, safe storage of CO2 requires reliable monitoring of the targeted CO2 injection sites and the integrity of the repository over time, including possible leakage. Electromagnetic technologies used for oil and gas exploration, sensitive to electrical conductivity, have long been considered an optimal monitoring method, as CO2, similar to hydrocarbons, typically exhibits lower conductivity than the surrounding medium. We apply 3D controlled-source electromagn... [more]

Bio-Oil Production from Multi-Waste Biomass Co-Pyrolysis Using Analytical Py−GC/MS
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: bio-oil, Biomass, fast pyrolysis, Py–GC/MS, TGA
Background: Bioenergy attracts much attention due to the global demand for renewable and sustainable energy resources. Waste biomass feedstocks—date pits, coffee waste, and cow dung—require efficient and environmentally friendly waste-management technologies such as pyrolysis. Fast pyrolysis occurs at fast heating rates (10−100 °C/s), generates high bio-oil yields, and is the most widely used process for biofuel generation. The aim of the study is to compare the effect of pyrolysis between single, binary, and ternary feeds on thermal degradation behavior and bio-oil composition. Methods: Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was conducted at 30 °C/min from room temperature to 850 °C to understand the thermal degradation behavior of the biomasses. A Pyroprobe® reactor—a micro-scale pyrolyzer—was used to conduct the fast pyrolysis at 500 °C with a heating rate of 10 °C/s, and the volatile contents were quantified using a gas chromatograph−mass spectrometer (GC/MS). Results: The (TGA) showed t... [more]

The Potential Role of Flying Vehicles in Progressing the Energy Transition
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: ELSI, Energy, energy transition, environment, flying vehicles, social acceptance
An energy transition is in progress around the globe, notably led by an increase in the deployment of renewable energy and a shift toward less emissions-intense options, notably in the transportation sector. This research investigates the potential role that new transportation options, namely flying vehicles, may play toward progressing the energy transition. As flying vehicles are a relatively new technology yet to penetrate the market, it is also prudent to consider the ethical, legal, and social issues (ELSI) associated with their implementation, alongside the potential energy and environmental impacts. Through a review of ELSI and energy and environmental literature, we identify research gaps and identify how flying vehicles may impact upon the energy transition over time. Our research identifies several critical aspects of both ELSI and energy and environmental academia relevant to the future deployment of flying vehicles and describes a deployment timeline and the resultant socie... Experimental Study on the Performance of a Space Radiation Cooling System under Different Environmental Factors
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: experimental study, outdoor environmental factors, radiant cooler, space radiation cooling
As a new passive cooling technology, space radiation cooling has great potential for development because the cooling itself has no energy consumption, and the radiation heat exchanger does not affect the appearance, with low noise and low cost. Several rectangular stainless steel plates coated with RLHY-2 material are used as the transmitter for the field test. The experimental results show that, in the case of no windscreen, the increase of outdoor humidity will reduce the cooling effect, and the greater the humidity, the more pronounced the reduction effect. Significantly when the humidity increases from 78% to 90%, the cooling power of the cooler reduces from 102 to 67 W/m2. The thickness of the cloud layer also affects the cooling effect of the space radiative cooler. Compared with the clear weather, the cooling power of the cooler is reduced by 11.65 W/m2 on average under foggy weather conditions. Compared with the force-1 wind and the force-3 wind, the cooling effect of the coole... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: actinide, Extraction, lanthanide, N,O-hybrid extractant, separation
Despite the fact that in the mass consciousness nuclear power is associated with increased environmental risks, this type of energy today remains one of the cleanest, most efficient and carbon neutral. Further development of nuclear energy is hampered by the problem of appropriate handling of spent nuclear fuel (SNF). A very attractive concept of the closed nuclear cycle has been developed to solve it. A real-life implementation of this concept requires the development of technological processes for the efficient separation of minor actinides from the rest of the SNF components. Recent progress in this area has been closely associated with N,O-hybrid donor ligands for liquid−liquid extraction. This work systematically reviews the available literature on the topic and provides detailed explanations on the behavior of the most perspective ligands. Notably, another important aspect of the application of N,O-hybrid donor ligands in nuclear cycle analytics through their incorporation in che... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: Adsorption, dye, hydrothermal, iron citrate, magnetic Fe3O4, superparamagnetism
The superparamagnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles as an absorbent with a size distribution of 4.8−6.4 nm were synthesized using a simple one-pot hydrothermal strategy at 200 °C for 24 h, where iron citrate and distilled were the sum total of raw materials. The as-synthesized Fe3O4 powders showed rapid and efficient adsorption for xylenol orange with a saturated adsorption amount of 42.5 mg/g according to Langmuir linear fitting, and the adsorption reaction between xylenol orange adsorbate and Fe3O4 adsorbent was mostly completed within 10 min. The Fe3O4 nanoparticles not only had superparamagnetism with a saturation magnetization value of 54.9 emu/g at 15 kOe but also possessed strong magnetic response, making them easy to separate easily from aqoeous solution under the attraction of magnet. In this work, the Fe3O4 particles can be totally attracted toward the magnet within 15 s, leaving the suspension a clear solution.

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: battery recycling, battery reuse, economic evaluation, electric vehicles, electric vehicles, environmental impacts, literature review, lithium-ion battery, recycling processes
Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are crucial for consumer electronics, complex energy storage systems, space applications, and the automotive industry. The increasing requirements for decarbonization and CO2 emissions reduction affect the composition of new production. Thus, the entire automotive sector experiences its turning point; the production capacities of new internal combustion engine vehicles are limited, and the demand for electric vehicles (EVs) has continuously increased over the past years. The growing number of new EVs leads to an increasing amount of automotive waste, namely spent LIBs. Recycling appears to be the most suitable solution for lowering EV prices and reducing environmental impacts; however, it is still not a well-established process. This work is the second part of the review collection based on the performed literature survey, where more than 250 publications about “Recycling of Lithium-ion Batteries from Electric Vehicles” were divided into five sections: Recy... Socioeconomic Paradigms and the Perception of System Risks: A Study of Attitudes towards Nuclear Power among Polish Business Students
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: cognitive factors in decision-making, decision-making under risk, dominant social paradigm, energy markets, information, knowledge, new ecological paradigm, sustainable development, uncertainty
Due to anticipated energy shortages and the need to achieve climate goals, there is an urgent requirement for transition towards a green, resilient system of energy provision. This transition is hampered because important players in energy markets (governments and oligopolies), while supporting large-scale solutions, avoid or block systemic changes. This rejection of systemic change is strengthened by the dominant social paradigm, which ignores systemic vulnerabilities, treating resources as solutions and the environment as a sink. In its turn, the dominant social paradigm is contested by the new ecological paradigm and by attitudes towards sustainable business practices. Understanding this framework may be relevant for identifying decision-makers’ perception of system risk, and thus for supporting a transition towards a more decentralized and resilient energy supply. In this context, this paper presents an empirical study among Polish students of a business university (N = 393), tryin... [more]

Energy Consumption and Environmental Impact of E-Grocery: A Systematic Literature Review
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: city logistics, e-grocery, energy consumption, environmental impact, SLR
E-grocery is fast growing worldwide and represents a relevant issue for city logistics. Although in almost all countries the percentage of food e-buyers was lower than those purchasing other commodity categories, due to the pandemic, they have increased significantly in the last two years, with consequences that are difficult to fathom and estimate. This phenomenon therefore deserves more attention, especially with respect to its environmental impact, mostly at the urban scale. This paper presents a systematic literature review (SLR) on how e-grocery impacts the environment through the CO2 emissions generated and the equivalent energy consumption. The methodology used for the review follows a standard approach, with different combinations of keywords used for the search performed in SCOPUS and the Web of Science databases. Emissions and energy consumption assessments were performed for all of the papers considered. The results point to two different findings: some studies consider onli... [more]

Biogas Power Generation from Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME): Techno-Economic and Environmental Impact Evaluation
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: anaerobic process, biogas, GHG emissions, palm oil mill effluent, power generation, profitability
Using palm oil mill effluent (POME) to produce biogas is an alternative and sustainable way to control POME GHG emissions while also providing economic benefits. The increasing area of oil palm plantations encourages an increase in palm oil production and the generation of POME in Indonesia. This could increase potential GHG emissions and global warming. In contrast, biogas power plants from POME are less attractive for economic investment in Indonesia. However, as the world’s largest palm oil producer, Indonesia still lacks techno-economic and environmental studies of biogas power generation from POME. This study aimed to evaluate the technical, economic, and environmental aspects of the biogas power generation from POME at the study site (Bangka Island, Indonesia). The result shows that the biogas plant at the study site can reduce COD levels of POME by up to 91% and produce biogas at 325,292 m3/month, with a 55% methane content. Biogas can be converted into electrical energy at 696,... [more]

A Novel Classification of the 330 kV Nigerian Power Network Using a New Voltage Stability Pointer
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: contingency, critical lines, new voltage stability pointer (NVSP), Nigerian power network (NGP), support vector machine, voltage stability
The incessant power outages that characterize the Nigerian power network (NGP), as in all developing countries, are not limited to the shortage of fuel for power generation. However, differential power shortages between the generated power and the load demand are alarming. In this study, we propose a new voltage stability pointer (NVSP) based on a reduced one-line power network to act as a classifier. The NVSP was trained with a support vector machine (SVM) using a medium Gaussian kernel classification toolbox (mGkCT) in the MATLAB environment. This classification is based on the power network susceptibility to voltage instability. NGP 28-bus 330 kV data were extracted and modeled in the MATLAB environment and tested with the NVSP-mGkCT classifier. The NVSP-mGkCT was able to classify the lines viz. stable and unstable lines for the base and contingency cases. Similarly, the linear load dynamics and non-linear load dynamics were evaluated on the basis of critical buses using the NVSP. T... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: diagnostics of high voltage transformers, electric and magnetic field stress
Electric and magnetic fields accompany technical personnel in their working environment (work exposure). That is why many countries have the appropriate regulations. The impact of electric and magnetic fields on humans is still not fully recognized. This is the reason why the limit values of its intensity in many countries differs significantly. The article presents changes in the stress limits of the electric and magnetic fields in Poland at the turn of the last dozen years. The last such change was the result of a Directive of the European Union (2013/35/EU). The effects of changes in limit values on the working conditions of technical personnel performing diagnostics of high voltage transformers or working in the immediate vicinity of such transformers are presented. The article shows that recent changes have improved the working conditions of technical personnel in relation to the electric field and worsened the conditions taking into account the magnetic field.

Fossil Fuel and Biofuel Boilers in Ukraine: Trends of Changes in Levelized Cost of Heat
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: biofuel, delivery costs, environmental tax rates, heat supply, levelized cost of heat, solid fuel boiler, thermal energy
An increase in the share of renewables in heat supply systems is a promising direction to reach sustainable development goals and decarbonization. Decision makers should consider various factors, including energy market prices, the availability of biofuels, boiler and auxiliary equipment costs, logistic costs, and the taxation system. In the European Union, the energy crisis causes a rapid increase in fossil fuel prices. Moreover, the use of fossil fuels results in greenhouse gas emissions, which threatens the achievement of sustainable development goals. We studied the influence of the delivery cost and the value of environmental tax rates on the levelized cost of heat. Low-capacity boilers (up to 1 MW) and different fossil and renewable fuels were analyzed. An analysis was carried out on the example of Ukraine. The European trends were factored in. Evaporation, Autoignition and Micro-Explosion Characteristics of RP-3 Kerosene Droplets under Sub-Atmospheric Pressure and Elevated Temperature
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: evaporation, micro-explosion, spontaneous ignition, sub-atmospheric pressure
The evaporation, autoignition and micro-explosion characteristics of RP-3 kerosene droplets under sub-atmospheric pressure (0.2−1.0 bar) and elevated temperature (473−1023 K) were experimentally investigated using high-speed camera technology. The results showed that the droplet evaporation rate increased monotonically with increasing temperature and pressure under 573−873 K and 0.2−1.0 bar. The decrease of temperature and pressure was obviously detrimental to the successful autoignition of droplets and increased the ignition delay time. Autoignitions at 0.2 bar were very difficult and required an ambient temperature of at least 973 K, which was about 150 K higher than the minimum ignition temperature at 1.0 bar. Sub-atmospheric pressure environment significantly inhibits the formation of soot particle clusters during the autoignition of droplet. Reducing pressure was also discovered to reduce the likelihood of micro-explosions at 673, 773 and 823 K but increase the bubble growth rate... [more]
