February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: greenhouse gas, landfill disposal, waste sector
Quantitative accounting of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions has become an important global focus. GHG emissions from the waste sector have high potential in GHG emissions reduction. We analyzed the GHG emissions inventory in the waste sector of the European Union, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and Canada from 1990 to 2019. Landfill disposal was the main category of GHGs from the waste sector, with a contribution rate between 69% and 95%. Landfill disposal also played a prominent role in emission reduction, with a contribution rate higher than 86%. GHG emissions from landfill sites in China were calculated using the inventory analysis method recommended by the IPCC and combined with actual situations. The results showed that the highest GHG emissions from landfill disposal in China occurred in 2020, with an estimated 165 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent. In 2019, the per capita GHG emissions from landfill sites in China was 117 kg CO2 equivalent... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: fracture, nuclear magnetic resonance, tight sandstone gas reservoir, water blocking
Tight sandstone gas reservoirs are characterized by deep burial, high pressure, tight matrix, fracture development, and the prevalence of edge and bottom water. Because of the small pore throats, the phenomenon of capillary force is evident. In addition, the low permeability of the reservoir and the difference in fluid properties make the gas reservoir undergo severe water-blocking damage. In this paper, centrifugal and nuclear magnetic resonance methods are used. The relationship between pore throat characteristics, fluid distribution, and gas reservoir water-blocking mechanism is studied and analyzed. The experimental results show that fracture formation increases the porosity of the small pores and expands the pore size distribution. It is conducive to the displacement of the bound water in the small pore space and the reduction in the bound water saturation. When increasing the same displacement pressure, the core porosity increases. More residual water in the tiny pores is convert... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: buildings, classification, CO2 emissions, review
CO2 is the most emitted greenhouse gas and is mainly produced by human activity. In fact, about 75% is emitted in cities and 40% of global carbon emissions is produced by the building sector. Therefore, buildings are very important in terms of CO2 emissions. This importance is also reflected in the works that have been developed on this subject. This manuscript reviews the research that has shown or calculated the amounts of CO2 emitted in buildings. For a better understanding of the scope of the investigations, a classification is presented. With this, it is intended to help researchers interested in this area by summarizing the studies carried out to date on the amounts of CO2 emitted depending on the type of building.

Subject: Environment
Keywords: doctoral dissertations, e-waste, electronic waste, SDG, Sustainable Development Goals, systematic literature review
Solving global sustainability challenges is based on a well-researched understanding of the corresponding underlying problems, key contributing factors, and current state-of-the-art. Utilizing the scope of recent doctoral studies is one potent way to map current young researchers nowadays and near future research focus areas and directions. Here, the authors focused on waste management, especially, mapping dissertations on the grooving global challenge of electronic waste. Currently, this is the first scoping study of its kind, about e-waste -related trends within the circle of waste management-related doctoral studies. Apparently, in a waste-related context, dissertations have a low interest in directly focusing on the topic of consumable e-waste, even though this waste stream is the world’s fastest-growing domestic waste stream. Only a handful of doctoral dissertations, related to e-waste management, were found in the study. In a more general waste-related benchmarking/comparing mapp... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: indoor environment, thermal comfort, thermal sensations
The paper analyses thermal comfort in intelligent and traditional buildings in Poland. It provides a comprehensive study on the subjective assessment of indoor environment conditions as well as on parameters that influence human thermal sensations and preferences. Direct measurements of physical parameters (e.g., air and globe temperature, relative humidity) as well as simultaneously conducted anonymous questionnaire studies were used to provide the necessary data. The study covered all seasons and a large number of participants representing various age groups and body build types, who completed a total of 1778 questionnaires. The results indicate that typically smart buildings offer higher levels of thermal comfort than the traditional ones and that people tend to prefer warmer environments. Moreover, it has been observed that the BMI index, air movement and the number of people per surface area can have an impact on the perceived thermal sensations.

Subject: Environment
Keywords: infrared radiation, porous ceramic radiant burner, surface emissivity, target environment, thermal efficiency
The heat transfer between a porous ceramic radiant burner (PCRB) and a target environment was studied. The black aluminum pot (BAP) and white aluminum pot (WAP) with an emissivity of 0.72 and 0.22 were experimentally used to obtain the temperature distribution and thermal efficiency of a burner. Under the same heat load, the porous ceramic plate (PCP) of WAP is 79~90 °C higher than BAP, but the measured thermal efficiency of BAP is 15~20% higher than WAP. A heat transfer model for PCRB and pots was established based on the radiant and convection heat transfer theories. This model is applicable to common infrared radiant burners. The heat gain type of the pot was analyzed quantitively, with a relative error of less than 7%. The influence of the pot surface emissivity on the burner and heat transfer change of the pot was discussed, and the solid radiation heat gain of BAP is approximately double that of BAP under the same heat load. For PCRBs whose main heat is from radiation, the pot wi... [more]

Bioenergy is the form of clean energy with the greatest potential for growth in Spain, especially in those regions with a large forest area and a high potential for the utilization of forest resources for energy purposes. This is the case in Galicia (a region located in northwestern Spain), where the communal management of forest resources is widespread. Within this type of management, there is a pioneering case study in which biomass energy use activities have been initiated through an international project. The possible success of this project is of great importance since it could represent an alternative to the main energy activity in the common management of forests: the production of wind energy. In recent years, and with a special increase in 2022, Galician public opinion has expressed its opposition to the implementation of new wind farms in its forests. The aim of this article is to analyze whether or not it is profitable for forest management communities to participate in bioe... [more]
