An Analysis of Circular Economy Literature at the Macro Level, with a Particular Focus on Energy Markets
Arezoo Ghazanfari
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: circular economy, energy transition, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, Sustainability, waste to energy
Sustainability is a strategic approach to develop a more sustainable economy to support the environment and socio-economic development. Literature on sustainability has been concerned mainly with global warming and environmental degradation issues, whereas the Circular Economy (CE) concept has recently been suggested as an alternative solution to support market sustainability and deal with both environmental and socio-economic challenges. In order to tackle these challenges, countries must switch from linear economies that follow the “take-make-dispose” principle to circular and sustainable economies. This study applies a structural and conceptual literature review to elucidate the most decisive determinants in the formation of circular strategies, particularly in the context of the energy sector. This study examines obstacles that hinder CE adoption and formulates drivers and measures to overcome them. The strategic literature review shows that the circular approach is critical in ach... Caiwei Fan, Kongyou Wu, Jun Li
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: carrier systems, central diapir zone, fractures, gas migrations and accumulations, overpressure
To understand hydrocarbon migration in terms of the mechanisms, accumulations and exploration targets, it is essential to correctly identify and characterize the carrier systems that control fluid-migration history and oil/gas reservoir formation. The Yinggehai Basin in China is an important area for natural gas exploration and production. However, due to the argillaceous sand sedimentary environment and the absence of faults from the Neogene thermal subsidence period, traditional migration pathways are absent in the Yinggehai Basin, posing significant challenges to target evaluation in this area. Exploration shows that most of the existing gas reservoirs are associated with vertical migration. In this work, coherence cube and curvature seismic techniques are used in the central diapir zone of the Yinggehai Basin to identify diapir-associated fractures and regional stress. Together with geological analysis, two categories of carrier system are discussed in detail to explain the complex... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: in-line inspection, long-distance oil and gas pipeline, monitoring, off-line inspection, permafrost area
Long-distance oil and gas pipelines buried in permafrost areas will inevitably encounter typical geological disasters, such as frost heave and thaw settlement and sliding, which easily cause pipeline displacement, bending, or deformation. When there are certain defects in the pipeline, additional complex, external stress will further lead to the failure of the pipeline or weld and can even lead to serious accidents such as pipeline leakage, pipe burst, or fracture. This paper introduces in detail the typical defects and risks of buried pipelines in permafrost areas and summarizes the in-line inspection technologies, off-line inspection technologies, and integrated monitoring systems for pipelines in the pipeline industry. Regarding pipelines in permafrost areas, in-line inspection methods may be employed. These include magnetic flux leakage, electromagnetic eddy current, ultrasonic, IMU, and electromagnetic acoustic transducer inspections. Off-line inspection is also one of the importa... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: biodiesel, circular economy, economic analysis, waste cooking oil
A detailed review was conducted to explore waste cooking oil (WCO) as feedstock for biodiesel. The manuscript highlights the impact on health while using used cooking oil and the scope for revenue generation from WCO. Up to a 20% blend with diesel results in less pollutants, and it does not demand more modifications to the engine. Also, this reduces the country’s import bill. Furthermore, it suggests the scope for alternate sustainable income among rural farmers through a circular economy. Various collection strategies are discussed, a SWOC (strength, weakness, opportunity, and challenges) analysis is presented to aid in understanding different countries’ policies regarding the collection of WCO, and a more suitable method for conversion is pronounced. A techno-economic analysis is presented to explore the viability of producing 1 litre of biodiesel. The cost of 1 litre of WCO-based biodiesel is compared with costs Iran and Pakistan, and it is noticed that the difference among them is... [more]

Michał Kozioł, Joachim Kozioł
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: co-combustion, combustion process control, emission of gaseous pollutants, grate furnaces, primary air distribution
When burning fuel in grate furnaces, supplying the right amount of air to them is as important as the method of air supply. In a furnace with a fixed grate, the supply method of primary air is determined by the distribution of the supplied air stream over time, and in a furnace with a movable grate, the said method involves the distribution of the stream along the active length of the grate. The need to account for air distribution is attributable to complex processes that occur during the combustion process. The paper describes experimental studies aimed at determining the influence of the distribution of the supplied primary air on the emission of CO2, CO, SO2, NOx, and on the content of combustible parts in the slag. In all cases, the total amount of primary air supplied to the process as well as other process control parameters was identical, and only the distribution of primary air was different. The paper proposes the use of a generalized function to describe the distribution of... [more]

Keywords: day-ahead transaction strategic, distributed energy resources aggregator, information gap decision theory, marine predators algorithm
Distributed energy resources aggregators (DERAs) are permitted to participate in regional wholesale markets in many counties. At present, new market players such as aggregators participate in China’s power market transactions. However, studies related to market trading strategy have mostly focused on centralized wind power and PV generation units. Few studies have been conducted on the decision-making strategies for DERAs in China’s power market. This paper proposes an auxiliary decision-making model for distributed energy systems to participate in the day-ahead market with more reasonable trading strategies. Firstly, the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) is used to deal with the uncertainties of wind power and photovoltaic (PV) output in the distributed energy system. Secondly, the information gap decision theory (IGDT) is used to deal with the uncertainty of price fluctuations in the spot electricity market. Thirdly, according to the different risk preferences of the DERAs facing market p... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: CO2 reduction, hydrogen production, wastewater treatment, water electrolysis
There is a significant push to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and develop low-cost fuels from renewable sources to replace fossil fuels in applications such as energy production. As a result, CO2 conversion has gained widespread attention as it can reduce the accumulation of CO2 in the atmosphere and produce fuels and valuable industrial chemicals, including carbon monoxide, alcohols, and hydrocarbons. At the same time, finding ways to store energy in batteries or energy carriers such as hydrogen (H2) is essential. Water electrolysis is a powerful technology for producing high-purity H2, with negligible emission of greenhouse gases, and compatibility with renewable energy sources. Additionally, the electrolysis of organic compounds, such as lignin, is a promising method for localised H2 production, as it requires lower cell voltages than conventional water electrolysis. Industrial wastewater can be employed in those organic electrolysis systems due to their high organic content,... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: concentration ratio, small linear Fresnel reflector, V-trough concentrator
We present the design of an original secondary cavity for use in Small-Scale Fresnel Reflectors in photovoltaic applications. The cavity is similar to the classical V-trough, but the primary reflector system is configured so that there are two focal points on the aperture. The rays coming from each side of the primary system reach the opposite side of the cavity, producing a non-symmetrical distribution of the irradiance. This modifies the acceptance half-angle and allows us to break the maximum limit for the concentration ratio of ideal symmetric concentrators. Our study is analytic, and we provide formulas for any number of reflections. Numerical simulations with a ray-tracing program based on MATLAB are included. We provide a comparison of optical concentration ratio, height and cost parameter between our system and two classical designs with a single focal point: the V-trough and the Compound Parabolic concentrators. This way, we verify that our design yields better concentration r... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: environment, particle numbers, passenger vehicle, RDE tests
In this study, the authors assessed the road emissions of several passenger cars using specialised instrumentation, of the PEMS type, to measure particle number emissions in real traffic conditions. The tests were performed on a RDE test route developed and compliant with EU guidelines. The results of the tests were discussed in terms of the direct (created in the internal combustion engine) emission of particulate matter in various road conditions. Additionally, an index was determined that characterizes the number of particles according to their diameter in relation to the content of particles in the air. A characteristic of combustion engines (gasoline, diesel) is that during a cold start of the engine, the concentration of the number of particles with diameters around 100 nm increases more than 200 times (for hybrids—300 times). On this basis, it can be concluded that particle emissions with diameters smaller than 23 nm are significant in motor vehicles powered by combustion engine... [more]
