Shock Wave Propagation and Flame Kernel Morphology in Laser-Induced Plasma Ignition of CH4/O2/N2 Mixture
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: constant volume combustion chamber (CVCC), flame kernel, Jones model, laser-induced plasma ignition, modified model, shock wave, Taylor model
The application of laser ignition in the aerospace field has promising prospects. Based on the constant volume combustion chamber, the laser ignition of CH4/O2/N2 mixture with different initial pressure, different laser energy, different equivalence ratio and different oxygen content has been carried out. The development characteristics of the flame kernel and shock wave under different conditions are analyzed. In addition, the Taylor model and Jones model are also used to simulate the development process of the shock wave, and a new modified model is proposed based on the Jones model. The experimental results show that under pure oxygen conditions, the chemical reaction rate of the mixture is too fast, which makes it difficult for the flame kernel to form the ring and third-lobe structure. However, the ring structure is easier to form with the pressure and laser energy degraded; the flame kernel morphology is easier to maintain at a rich equivalence ratio, which is caused by the influ... Effects of Air Temperature and Humidity on the Kinetics of Sludge Drying at Low Temperatures
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: drying characteristics, relative humidity, sludge, temperature
In this study, a low-air temperature sludge drying system was constructed and the effects of temperature and relative humidity on the characteristics of the system were investigated. The results showed that the drying rate of sludge increased with an increase in air temperature and a decrease in the air’s relative humidity. The influence of temperature on the average drying rate exhibited an approximate quadratic distribution, while the influence of relative humidity on the average drying rate exhibited an almost linear distribution. The relationship equations of the average drying rate, temperature, and humidity were summarized and compared with the experimental results, and the maximum relative error was 7.6375%. By comparing the experimental results with the commonly used thin-layer drying models, it was found that the sludge drying characteristics were more consistent with the Midilli model. Based on the relevant parameters of the Midilli model, the relationship between the segment... [more]

Fuel Properties of Torrefied Biomass from Sapindus Pericarp Extraction Residue under a Wide Range of Pyrolysis Conditions
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fuel property, lignite-like biomass, Sapindus pericarp, solid fuel, torrefaction
In this work, a novel biomass, the extraction residue of Sapindus pericarp (SP), was torrefied by using an electronic oven under a wide range of temperature (i.e., 200−320 °C) and residence times (i.e., 0−60 min). From the results of the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) of SP, a significant weight loss was observed in the temperature range of 200−400 °C, which can be divided into the decompositions of hemicellulose (major)/lignin (minor) (200−320 °C) and cellulose (major)/lignin (minor) (320−400 °C). Based on the fuel properties of the feedstock SP and SP-torrefied products, the optimal torrefaction conditions can be found at around 280 °C for holding 30 min, showing that the calorific value, enhancement factor and energy yield of the torrefied biomass were enhanced to be 28.60 MJ/kg, 1.36 and 82.04 wt%, respectively. Consistently, the values of the calorific value, carbon content and molar carbon/hydrogen (C/H) ratio indicated an increasing trend at higher torrefaction temperatures an... [more]

Unlocking the UK Continental Shelf Electrification Potential for Offshore Oil and Gas Installations: A Power Grid Architecture Perspective
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CapEx, CO2 emissions, HVDC, net-zero, offshore, oil and gas, UKCS, wind energy
Most of the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) oil and gas (OG) installations have traditionally adopted in situ power generation, which is not only inefficient but also generating about 70% of the offshore CO2 emissions. The offshore wind and energy storage technologies for deep water are developing at a fast pace, enabling great opportunities for the OG installations located in the North Sea. In this paper, a pathway for the UKCS offshore OG installations electrification is introduced. The aim is to provide different power architectures that facilitate the OG installations’ electrification, while benefiting from the existing and planned UK offshore wind power. Four hypothetical case studies (based on real data) were created, along the UKCS, where the corresponding power architectures were proposed. The selection of each architecture power component (e.g., transformers, converters and cables), as well as the transmission and distribution technology (e.g., AC or DC), is also provided and just... Residential Solar Water Heater Adoption Behaviour: A Review of Economic and Technical Predictors and Their Correlation with the Adoption Decision
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adoption behaviour, household, predictors, solar water heater, technology innovation
The successful deployment of the solar water heater (SWH) in the residential sector relies on the household’s bounded rational decision-makers to accept this system. The decision is shaped by a wide spectrum of predictors that form heterogeneous behaviour. Over the past years, research has employed a wide range of these predictors to understand their role in the decision and predict the behaviour and diffusion rate of SWHs. This review primarily identifies economic and technical predictors of 100 quantitative and qualitative studies on the residential SWH adoption decision. For the identified predictors, their characteristics and popularity are explored in a structured and coherent framework. The review further investigates the correlation between the identified predictors and the adoption decision from 97 of the 100 initially reviewed studies. The outcome of the research revealed 123 (56 economic and 67 technical) predictors that were classified into seven categories. ‘Financial incen... [more]

The Carbon Dioxide Emission as Indicator of the Geothermal Heat Flow: Review of Local and Regional Applications with a Special Focus on Italy
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: carbon dioxide flux, central Apennines, convection, geothermal systems, heat flow
We review the methods based on the measurement of CO2 emissions for the computation of geothermal heat flow, both at a local (hydrothermal sites, a few km2) and regional scale (hundreds km2). At the local scale, we present and discuss the cases of the Latera caldera and Torre Alfina (Italy) geothermal systems. At Torre Alfina and Latera, the convection process sustains a CO2 emission of ~1 kg s−1 and ~4 kg s−1, and heat flows of 46 MW and 130 MW, respectively. At the regional scale, we discuss the case of the central Apennine (Italy), where CO2 mass and enthalpy balances of regional aquifers highlights a wide and strong thermal anomaly in an area of low conductive heat flow. Notably, the CO2/heat ratios computed for the central Apennines are very similar to those of the nearby geothermal systems of Latium and Tuscany, suggesting a common source of CO2-rich fluids ascribed to the Tyrrhenian mantle.

Hybrid Ejector-Absorption Refrigeration Systems: A Review
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: absorption refrigeration, combined ejector absorption system, cooling system, dual ejectors, hybrid refrigeration system
Absorption Refrigeration Systems (ARS) are potential alternatives to direct expansion (DX) refrigeration systems. This review focused on the incorporation of an ejector into absorption refrigeration cycles to constitute Hybrid Ejector-Absorption Refrigeration Systems (HEARS). The ejector adds several advantages to the absorption refrigeration systems depending on its location in the cycle. The two prevalent configurations of HEARS are Triple pressure level (TPL-HEARS), and Low Pressure Condenser (LPC-HEARS). Previous studies revealed the preference of the latter configuration as it allows lower circulation ratios, enhances the refrigeration effect, and could achieve a COP up to 1. Moreover, LPC configuration is suitable with single, double, and variable-effect absorption systems with a COP of above unity. In turn, the TPL-HEARS notably enhances the absorption process, particularly when a variable geometry ejector is utilized. This configuration could obtain a COP around 1.1, but only w... [more]

Wake Shape and Height Profile Measurements in a Concave Open Channel Flow regarding the Target in DONES
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: DONES, experimental methods, open channel flow, wakes
Wakes appearing downstream of disturbances on the surface of a water flow in a concave open channel were examined experimentally. The investigated channel geometry was similar to the liquid lithium target in DONES (Demonstration fusion power plant Oriented NEutron Source). The objective of the measurements was to analyze the effect of a disturbance on the downstream layer thickness. For measuring the height profiles in the channel, an optical measurement system based on laser triangulation was developed. It was shown that the wake of the undisturbed flow emerged from the nozzle corner, which was in accordance with analytical solutions. For sufficiently large disturbances at the nozzle edge, the height profiles located downstream showed symmetrical minima and maxima on both sides of the disturbance. The wake depth strongly depended on the diameter and penetration depth of the disturbance, as well as the circumferential position in the channel, which yields to a critical wake depth of on... Experimental Study on Ignition Characteristics of RP-3 Jet Fuel Using Nanosecond Pulsed Plasma Discharge
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ignition probability, minimum ignition energy (MIE), nanosecond pulsed plasma discharge, RP-3 jet fuel
A study on forced ignition characteristics of RP-3 jet fuel-air mixture was conducted around a constant volume combustion vessel and a nanosecond pulsed plasma discharge power supply. Experiments were carried out at different initial pressures (pu = 0.2, 0.3, 0.5 atm), equivalence ratios (ϕ = 0.7, 0.8, 1.1), steam concentrations (ZH = 0%, 10%, 15%) and oxygen concentrations (ZO = 13.5%, 16%, 21%). The relationship between ignition probability and ignition energy is investigated. The experimental results show that the decrease in pressure, equivalence ratio, oxygen concentration and the increase in steam concentration all lead to an increase in minimum ignition energy (MIE). In order to further analyze the experimental data, one existing fitting equation is reformed with the initial conditions taken into account. Multivariate fitting is carried out for different conditions, and the fitting results of ignition probability are in good agreement with the experiments. The MIE results under... [more]

Endpoint Use Efficiency Comparison for AC and DC Power Distribution in Commercial Buildings
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: AC/DC converters, DC distribution, DC/DC converters, miscellaneous electric loads
Advances in power electronics and their use in Miscellaneous Electric Loads (MELs) in buildings have resulted in increased interest in using low-voltage direct current (DC) power distribution as a replacement for the standard alternating current (AC) power distribution in buildings. Both systems require an endpoint converter to convert the distribution system voltage to the MELs voltage requirements. This study focused on the efficiency of these endpoint converters by testing pairs of AC/DC and DC/DC power converters powering the same load profile. In contrast to prior studies, which estimated losses based on data sheet efficiency and rated loads, in this study, we used part load data derived from real-world time-series load measurements of MELs and experimentally characterized efficiency curves for all converters. The measurements performed for this study showed no systematic efficiency advantage for commercially available DC/DC endpoint converters relative to comparable, commercially... [more]

Projected Near-Surface Wind Speed Trends in Lithuania
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: climate change, IPCC projections, RCP scenarios, wind speed
Developing wind energy in Lithuania is one of the most important ways to achieve green energy goals. Observational data show that the decline in wind speeds in the region may pose challenges for wind energy development. This study analyzed the long-term variation of the observed 2006−2020 and projected 2006−2100 near-surface wind speed at the height of 10 m over Lithuanian territory using data of three models included in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5 (CMIP5). A slight decrease in wind speeds was found in the whole territory of Lithuania for the projected wind speed data of three global circulation models for the scenarios RCP2.6, RCP4.5, and RCP8.5. It was found that the most favorable scenario for wind energy production is RCP2.6, and the most unfavorable is the RCP4.5 scenario under which the decrease in wind speed may reach 12%. At the Baltic Sea coastal region, the decline was smaller than in the country’s inner regions by the end of the century. The highest red... [more]

Experimental Analysis of Temperature Influence on Waste Tire Pyrolysis
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: batch reactor, fuel, pyrolysis, temperature, waste tire
Pyrolysis is an optimal thermochemical process for obtaining valuable products (char, oil, and gas) from waste tires. The preliminary research was done on the three groups of samples acquired by cutting the same waste tire of a passenger vehicle into cylindrical granules with a base diameter of 3, 7, and 11 mm. Each batch weighed 10 g. The heating rate was 14 °C/min, and the final pyrolysis temperature was 750 °C, with 90 s residence time. After the pyrolysis product yields were determined for all of the three sample groups, further research was performed only on 3 mm granules, with the same heating rate, but with altered final pyrolytic temperatures (400, 450, 500, 550, 600, 650, 700, and 750 °C). The results of this study show that thermochemical decomposition of the waste tire sample takes place in the temperature range of 200−500 °C, with three distinct phases of degradation. The highest yield of the pyrolytic oil was achieved at a temperature of 500 °C, but further heating of vola... [more]

Shading and Masking of PV Collectors on Horizontal and Sloped Planes Facing South and North—A Comparative Study
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: horizontal and sloped plane PV deployments, masking losses, row masking, row shading, shading losses
With the increase in PV system installations, the available free land and rooftops for these systems may become scarcer, and therefore sloped fields facing the north may be utilized for that purpose. In deployments of PV collectors in multiple rows, either on horizontal or sloped planes, the second and subsequent rows are subject to two effects: shading and masking. Both effects reduce the electric energy generated by the PV systems. Multiple rows of collectors are deployed on horizontal planes and on sloped planes facing south, and literature on the topic has been published. No literature deals analytically with deployments of PV fields on north-facing slopes in the northern hemisphere, to the best of our knowledge. The present study develops explicit analytical expressions for the shadow height and length cast on a collector row by a row in front in multiple-row PV systems installed on slopes facing north. In addition, analytical expressions are developed for row spacing and sky view... [more]

Pore-Scale Investigation of Microscopic Remaining Oil Variation Characteristic in Different Flow Rates Using Micro-CT
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flow rate, micro-CT, microscopic remaining oil, pore-scale
The main means of secondary oil recovery is water flooding, which has been widely used in various oilfields. Different flow rates have a great impact on the recovery ratio and the occurrence of remaining oil. Scholars have carried out extensive research on it, but mostly on the macro scale, and research on the three-dimensional micro scale is also limited by accuracy and a lack of accurate understanding. In this paper, micro-CT and core displacement experiments are used to intuitively show the occurrence state of remaining oil under different flow rates. Through a series of quantitative image processing methods and remaining oil classification methods, the occurrence characteristics of remaining oil under different flow rates are systematically evaluated and studied. The results show that: (1) As the displacement rate increases, the remaining oil saturation decreases (61%; 35%; 23%), but the remaining oil is more evenly distributed along the slice; (2) Two lower displacement speeds (0.... Real Air-Conditioning Performance of Ejector Refrigerator Based Air-Conditioner Powered by Low Temperature Heat Source
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air-conditioning, ejector refrigeration system, low grade heat utilization, thermal comfort
In this present work, the air-conditioning test performance of an ejector refrigerator-based air-conditioner (ERAC) was proposed. The ERAC was operated as the water chiller to produce the cooling load up to 4.5 kW. The chilled water temperature was later supplied to the fan-coil unit for producing the thermal comfort condition. The cooling water used to cool the condenser was achieved from the cooling tower which was operated under the hot and humid ambient. This is to demonstrate the feasibility of using the ERAC in real working conditions. The cooling load supplied to the air-conditioned space was applied by the air heater. The ERAC could efficiently be operated to produce the thermal comfort condition which was driven by the hot water temperature (Thot) of 90−98 °C. The system performance could vary with the heat source temperatures, cooling load, primary nozzle, and air-conditioned space temperature. The optimal performance was determined when varying the Thot, and, hence, the opti... [more]

April 26, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bioethanol, cellulosic sugars, enzymatic hydrolysis, eucalyptus bark, hydrolysate, kraft pulp
The pulp and paper industry faces an emerging challenge for valorising wastes and side-streams generated according to the biorefinery concept. Eucalyptus globulus bark, an abundant industrial residue in the Portuguese pulp and paper sector, has a high potential to be converted into biobased products instead of being burned. This work aimed to evaluate the ethanol production from E. globulus bark previously submitted to kraft pulping through separate hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF) configuration. Fed-batch enzymatic hydrolysis provided a concentrated hydrolysate with 161.6 g·L−1 of cellulosic sugars. S. cerevisiae and Ethanol Red® strains demonstrated a very good fermentation performance, despite a negligible xylose consumption. S. passalidarum, a yeast known for its capability to consume pentoses, was studied in a simultaneous co-culture with Ethanol Red®. However, bioethanol production was not improved. Building Façade Retrofit with Solar Passive Technologies: A Literature Review
April 26, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: building retrofit, façade, Mediterranean climate, solar passive technologies
Worldwide, buildings have been presented as one of the main energy consumers and, for that matter, there is an increased tendency to invest in policies and measures that promote more efficient buildings. Among the chosen strategies, the need to promote the use of passive solutions and retrofit the existing building stock is often pointed out. Portuguese building stock has proven to be obsolete in terms of thermal comfort, which can directly affect the energy demand for climatization purposes. Considering the great solar availability in the country, when compared to other European locations, building retrofit with solar passive technologies can be a suitable solution. This paper aims to review studies on the application of solar passive technologies to retrofit façades in the Mediterranean climate context, with a special focus on Portugal. Four retrofit passive solar technologies were reviewed, namely glazing, sun shading, sunspaces and Trombe wall technologies.

A Review of Heat Recovery in Ventilation
April 26, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy-consumption, heat recovery, recovery efficiency, ventilation systems
The purpose of the article was to present information on heat recovery in ventilation systems and to highlight what has not been sufficiently researched in this regard. A lot of information can be found on methods and exchangers for heat recovery in centralized systems. Decentralized, façade systems for cyclical supply and exhaust air have not been sufficiently researched. It is known that these devices are sensitive to the influence of wind and temperature, hence heat recovery may be ineffective in their case. The literature describes the aspect of heat recovery depending on the location in climatic zones, depending on the number of degree days (HDD). Attention was also paid to the risk of freezing of heat recovery exchangers. The literature review also showed the lack of a universal method for assessing heat recovery exchangers and the method of their selection depending on the climate.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fuel cycle, HTR, Nuclear, ORION, process heat, SFR, SMR, spent nuclear fuel
International and UK fuel cycle scenario analyses performed to date have focused on nuclear plants producing electricity without considering in detail the other potential drivers for nuclear power, such as industrial process heat. Part of the reason behind the restricted applications of nuclear power is because the assumptions behind the future scenario are not fully captured, for example how big are demands from different sectors? Here we present a means to fully capture the potential opportunities for nuclear power using Sankey diagrams and then, using this information, consider for the first time in the UK the fuel cycle implications of decarbonising industrial heat demand in the year 2050 with nuclear power using the ORION fuel cycle code to study attributes related to spent fuel, uranium demand and decay heat from the spent fuel. We show that even in high industrial energy demand scenarios, the sensitivity of spent fuel masses and decay heat to the types of reactor deployed is rel... [more]

Enhancing Performance of a Piezoelectric Energy Harvester System for Concurrent Flutter and Vortex-Induced Vibration
April 26, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coupling effect, enhancing performance, field application testing, nonlinear aeroelastic, piezoelectric energy harvester, vortex-induced vibration
This paper proposes a novel and efficient energy harvester (EH) system, for capturing simultaneously flutter and vortex-induced vibration. There exists a coupling effect between flexible spring energy harvester (FSEH) and cantilever beam energy harvester (CBEH) in aerodynamic response and output characteristic. Many prototypes of the harvester were manufactured to explore the coupling effect in a wind tunnel. The experimental results demonstrate that FSEH is mainly subjected to flutter-induced vibration and CBEH undergoes vortex-induced vibration. Disturbance of FSEH first takes place, a limited oscillation cycle then occurs, and chaos ultimately happens as airflow velocity increase. Root mean square voltages are more than 11 V for FSEH at beyond 10.52 m/s, which shows the better output performance over the existing harvesters. Vibration response and output voltage of various harvesters are mutually enhanced with each other. An enhancing ratio for FSEH-130-25 is up to 69.6% over FSEH-1... [more]

Preferences for Nuclear Power in Post-Fukushima Japan: Evidence from a Large Nationwide Household Survey
April 26, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy mix, Fukushima, household survey, nuclear power plant, proximity
Utilizing the data of a large nationwide household survey conducted in 2014, we investigate public preferences on nuclear power in Japan after the Fukushima nuclear accident and the role of four sets of factors: (1) household/individual socioeconomic characteristics, (2) psychological status, (3) geographical aspects, and (4) Fukushima accident-related experiences. The preferred energy mix, according to the averaged responses from the survey, includes 0.59 for renewables, 0.29 for fossil fuels, and 0.12 for nuclear—much more skewed towards the renewables than the actual national share of renewables of less than 0.2. Male, older, unmarried, less educated, high-income people, and government party supporters have a preference towards a higher share of nuclear power, except if they live near nuclear power plants. The experience of blackout and aversion to nuclear power during the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 lowers the share of nuclear power in the preferred mix.

An Aqueous CaCl2 Solution in the Condenser/Evaporator Instead of Pure Water: Application for the New Adsorptive Cycle “Heat from Cold”
April 26, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adsorption dynamics, adsorptive heat transformation, calcium chloride aqueous solution, HeCol cycle, Water
This paper addresses the analysis of the applicability of water as a working fluid for the new adsorptive heat transformation (AHT) cycle "Heat from Cold" (HeCol). The cycle proposed for cold countries operates at the ambient temperature below 0 °C. In this work, an aqueous solution of calcium chloride is proposed instead of liquid water to prevent the ice formation in the evaporator and condenser. The proposed water-based cycle is compared with the common methanol-based HeCol one in terms of the specific useful heat generated per cycle. The effect of the CaCl2 solution on the cycle boundary pressures and its useful heat is studied both theoretically and experimentally. This approach can be extended to other adsorptive heat transformation cycles working at an evaporator or condenser temperature below 0 °C.
