April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bimetallic catalyst, biofuel, modifier, reforming of bioethanol, renewable hydrogen
Autothermal reforming of bioethanol (ATR of C2H5OH) over promoted Ni/Ce0.8La0.2O1.9 catalysts was studied to develop carbon-neutral technologies for hydrogen production. The regulation of the functional properties of the catalysts was attained by adjusting their nanostructure and reducibility by introducing various types and content of M promoters (M = Pt, Pd, Rh, Re; molar ratio M/Ni = 0.003−0.012). The composition−characteristics−activity correlation was determined using catalyst testing in ATR of C2H5OH, thermal analysis, N2 adsorption, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and EDX analysis. It was shown that the type and content of the promoter, as well as the preparation mode (combined or sequential impregnation methods), determine the redox properties of catalysts and influence the textural and structural characteristics of the samples. The reducibility of catalysts improves in the following sequence of promoters: Re < Rh < Pd < Pt, with an increase in the... [more]

April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: gas transmission system, Natural Gas, natural gas physical flows, pipelines, Ukraine
The main objective of the paper was comparative analyses of natural gas quantities delivered through the existing pipeline capacities in the last decade and new pipeline capacities for the prediction of possible future flows of gas import to Europe. Changes in physical flows have been influenced by European energy strategies that became green oriented resulting with a high amount of non-utilized transmission capacities. The research findings have shown that there is a significant decrease observed in transit of Russian gas through Ukraine in 2020 than previously. Concerning the high increase of LNG import to Europe in the same year, the start of operation of TurkStream, planned start of operation of Nord stream 2, authors project the gradual decrease of transit of Russian gas through Ukraine until the year 2025 with the total stop of transit of Russian gas until the year 2030. The change of supply routes will be also under the economic influence of low gas prices and coal and gas fuel... [more]

April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combustion, ignition thresholds, methane, particles, thermal radiation
The prevention and evaluation of explosions requires suitable standards of measurement. As such, for this study two ignition thresholds, the ignition temperature and the minimum ignition irradiance were selected as the assessment criteria. These ignition threshold values were experimentally determined by heating stationary inert silicon carbide particles via thermal radiation with a large spot size in order to ignite quiescent methane-air fuel mixtures. A high-speed Schlieren camera was used to capture the progression of the formation and propagation of the flames throughout the experiments. The results of the experiments show that the irradiance and temperature threshold are directly and inversely proportional to the particle size, respectively. Furthermore, the irradiance and temperature thresholds have similar tendencies within the flammability limits; wherein, the minimum value corresponds to fuel mixtures at a stoichiometric ratio, and increases as the equivalence ratio shifts tow... April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aerodynamic performance, diffuser hade angle, pressure recovery, strut geometry, turbine exhaust diffuser
In this study, we numerically investigated the effects of design parameters, such as the strut geometry or diffusion angle, on the performance of an industrial turbine exhaust diffuser. Turbine exhaust diffusers are commonly used to change the kinetic energy of exhaust gases from the outlet of turbine stages into the static pressure. The turbine exhaust diffuser investigated in this work consisted of an annular diffuser with five identical struts equally spaced around the front circumference and a conical diffuser with a hub extension at the rear. Four design parameters were considered and several values for each parameter were tested in this study. The aerodynamic performances of the studied diffusers were evaluated according to their pressure recovery coefficients and rates of total pressure loss. Contours for the velocity, pressure, and entropy increase were plotted and compared for the various diffuser shapes. The numerical results showed that the strut thickness and the axially sw... [more]

April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: heat exchangers, thermocouple, thermoelectric generators, waste heat
One of the methods of converting thermal energy into electricity is the use of thermoelectric generators (TEG). The method can be used in low-temperature waste heat conversion systems from industrial installations, but its serious limitation is the low efficiency of thermolectric generators and the relatively low power of the electric waveforms obtained. Increasing the obtained power values is done by multiplying the number of TEGs used, grouped into modules (MTEG). In such systems, the design of the module is extremely important, as it should ensure the best possible heat transfer between both sides of the TEG (hot and cold), and thus obtaining maximum electrical power. The article presents an analysis of a two-section flat plate heat hot side exchanger MTEG. The key parameters like effectiveness of exchange and MTEG efficiency and their impact on the efficiency of heat use and generated electric power were indicated. The tests showed an improvement in these main system parameters for... [more]

April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: FAST, fault-tolerant control, fuzzy logic, power derating, wind turbine
Wind energy is a form of renewable energy with the highest installed capacity. However, it is necessary to reduce the operation and maintenance costs and extend the lifetime of wind turbines to make wind energy more competitive. This paper presents a power-derating-based Fault-Tolerant Control (FTC) model in 2 MW three-bladed wind turbines implemented using the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s (NREL) Fatigue, Aerodynamics, Structures, and Turbulence (FAST) wind turbine simulator. This control strategy is potentially supported by the health status of the gearbox, which was predicted by means of algorithms and quantified in an indicator denominated as a merge developed by SMARTIVE, a pioneering of in this idea. Fuzzy logic was employed in order to decide whether to down-regulate the output power or not, and to which level to adjust to the needs of the turbines. Simulation results demonstrated that a reduction in the power output resulted in a safer operation, since the stresses wit... [more]

Keywords: earthquake intensity measure, lead rubber bearing, nuclear power plant structure, optimality, probabilistic seismic demand model, time-history analysis
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the optimal earthquake intensity measures (IMs) for probabilistic seismic demand models (PSDMs) of the base-isolated nuclear power plant (NPP) structures. The numerical model of NPP structures is developed using a lumped-mass stick model, in which a bilinear model is employed to simulate the force-displacement relations of base isolators. In this study, 20 different IMs are considered and 90 ground motion records are used to perform time-history analyses. The seismic engineering demand parameters (EDPs) are monitored in terms of maximum floor displacement (MFD), the maximum floor acceleration (MFA) of the structures, and maximum isolator displacement (MID). As a result, a set of PSDMs of the base-isolated structure is developed based on three EDPs (i.e., MFD, MFA, and MID) associated with 20 IMs. Four statistical parameters including the coefficient of determination, efficiency (i.e., standard deviation), practicality, and proficiency are then c... April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy management, hybrid power systems, renewable energy sources, small hydropower plant, variable speed operation
Hybrid hydro energy systems are usually analysed with pumped hydro storage systems, which can facilitate energy accumulation from other sources. Despite the lack of water storage, run-of-the-river hydropower plants are also attractive for hybrid systems owing to their low investment cost, short construction time, and small environmental impact. In this study, a hybrid system that contains run-of-the-river small hydro power plants (SHPs), PV systems, and batteries to serve local loads is examined. Low-power and low-head schemes that use variable-speed operation are considered. The novelty of this study is the proposal of a dedicated steady-state model of the run-of-the-river hydropower plant that is suitable for energy production analysis under different hydrological conditions. The presented calculations based on a real SHP of 150 kW capacity have shown that a simplified method can result in a 43% overestimation of the produced energy. Moreover, a one-year analysis of a hybrid system o... [more]

Keywords: distributed bragg reflector (DBR), mid-infrared (MIR), porous anodic alumina (PAA), porous photonic crystals, structural engineering, transmission spectra
A robust and reliable method for fabricating porous anodic alumina (PAA)-based distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs), operating in mid-infrared (MIR) spectral region, is presented. The method relies on application of high (UH) and low (UL) voltage pulse sequence repeated in cycles. PAA-based DBR consists of alternating high-(dH) and low-porosity (dL) layers translated directly into periodically varied refractive index. Two anodization modes were used: time- and charge density-controlled mode. The former generated dH + dL pairs with non-uniform thickness (∆d) and effective refractive index (∆neff). It is supposed, that owing to a compensation effect between the ∆d and ∆n, the photonic stopbands (PSBs) were symmetrical and intensive (transmittance close to zero). Under the charge density-controlled mode dH + dL pairs of uniform thickness were formed. However, the remaining ∆neff provided an asymmetrical broadening of PSBs. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the spectral position of the P... [more]

Keywords: design optimization, fatigue testing, flexure spring, free-piston Stirling engine, thermal cycle
The free-piston Stirling engine is a closed-cycle regenerative heat engine that converts heat energy into mechanical work, and requires a spring element for vibratory operations of the displacer and power pistons. In this study, the geometry of the flexural spring design was optimized through structural finite element analyses and fatigue test evaluations. First, we constructed a target design space considering the required natural frequency of the displacer spring assembly under the geometric constraints of total mass and module height. The design of experiments was employed to construct simulation cases for design factors such as the outer diameter, thickness, and number of spirals in the spring sheet. As a result, the optimized design values were obtained to satisfy the design requirements. We also fabricated a test spring specimen and conducted fatigue tests using a linear actuator system developed to have the same motion as the engine. The test results indicated that the optimized... Keywords: air-handling unit, battery room, HVACS, intrinsic safe barrier module, network control panel
Lead-acid batteries utilised in electrical substations release hydrogen and oxygen when these are charged. These gases could be dangerous and cause a risk of fire if they are not properly ventilated. Therefore, this research seeks to design and implement a network control panel for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system (HVACS). This is achieved by using a specific range of controllers, which have more than thirty loops of proportional, integral, and derivative (PID) control to achieve a cost-effective design. It performs the required function of extracting hydrogen and oxygen, maintaining the desired temperature of the battery storage room within recommended limits (i.e., 25 ± 1 °C tolerance) without compromising quality, as set out in the user requirement specification. The system control panel allows the user to access control parameters such as changing temperature set-points, fan-speed, sensor database, etc. It does this automatically and allows no human interface after... Keywords: battery energy storage, capacity value, generation management, Monte Carlo, resource adequacy
The objective of this paper is to evaluate the contribution of energy storage systems to resource adequacy of power systems experiencing increased levels of renewables penetration. To this end, a coherent methodology for the assessment of system capacity adequacy and the calculation of energy storage capacity value is presented, utilizing the Monte Carlo technique. The main focus is on short-duration storage, mainly battery energy storage systems (BESS), whose capacity values are determined for different power and energy configurations. Alternative operating policies (OPs) are implemented, prioritizing system cost or reliability, to demonstrate the significant effect storage management may have on its contribution to system adequacy. A medium-sized island system is used as a study case, applying a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) generation scheduling model to simulate BESS and system operation under each OP, in order to determine capacity contribution and overall performance in... April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy mix, mean-variance, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, system cost, variability
The viability of Variable Renewable Energy (VRE)-investment strategies depends on the response of dispatchable producers to satisfy the net load. We lack a simple research tool with sufficient complexity to represent major phenomena associated with the response of dispatchable producers to the integration of high shares of VRE and their impact on system costs. We develop a minimization of the system cost allowing one to quantify and decompose the system value of VRE depending on an aggregate dispatchable production. Defining the variable cost of the dispatchable generation as quadratic with a coefficient depending on macroeconomic factors such as the cost of greenhouse gas emissions leads to the simplest version of the model. In the absence of curtailment, and for particular parameter values, this version is equivalent to a mean-variance problem. We apply this model to France with solar and wind capacities distributed over the administrative regions of metropolitan France. In this case... [more]

Keywords: DC-DC boost converter, DFIG, MPPT control technique, photovoltaic array, wind turbine
Nuclear and renewables energies are the two variants for low-carbon energy and the evolving grid suggests possible synergies between them. Nuclear energy introduces supple operations based on power demand, while renewables such as PV and wind hybrid systems depend on the presence and strength of sunlight or wind. For grid stability, there is need to improve their performance in order to overcome the impact of this disadvantage. The paper is a step in this direction as it addresses a detailed comprehensive dynamic modeling and an efficient control of grid-connected energy sources such as PV or wind system to increase system reliability and to ensure the power quality and safe operation of critical demands. The behavior of the suggested hybrid system is tested at different climate circumstances such as variation of sun radiation and wind speed. The PV is equipped with a boost converter and a three-phase pulse width modulation (PWM) inverter. The wind energy comprises a doubly fed generat... [more]

Keywords: aerodynamic-enhancement, flow augmentation, small wind energy, VAWT, wind deflector, wind turbine optimization
Developments in the design of wind turbines with augmentation are advancing around the globe with the goal of generating electricity close to the user in built-up areas. This is certain to help lessen the power generation load as well as distribution and transmission network costs by reducing the distance between the user and the power source. The main objectives driving the development and advancement of vertical-axis wind turbines are increasing the power coefficient and the torque coefficient by optimizing the upstream wind striking on the rotor blades. Unlike horizontal-axis wind turbines, vertical axis turbines generate not only positive torque but also negative torque during operation. The negative torque generated by the returning blade is a key issue for vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) that is counterproductive. Installation of wind deflectors for flow augmentation helps to reduce the negative torque generated by the returning blades as well as enhance the positive torque b... [more]

The increasing use of electric vehicles in road and air transportation, especially in last-mile delivery and city mobility, raises new operational challenges due to the limited capacity of electric batteries. These limitations impose additional driving range constraints when optimizing the distribution and mobility plans. During the last years, several researchers from the Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Operations Research communities have been developing optimization, simulation, and machine learning approaches that aim at generating efficient and sustainable routing plans for hybrid fleets, including both electric and internal combustion engine vehicles. After contextualizing the relevance of electric vehicles in promoting sustainable transportation practices, this paper reviews the existing work in the field of electric vehicle routing problems. In particular, we focus on articles related to the well-known vehicle routing, arc routing, and team orienteering problems.... [more]

April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DPF, particle number measurements, periodic technical inspection
The article presents the possibility of verifying the efficiency of a diesel particulate filter (DPF) with the use of particle counters using two different measurement methods. The tests were carried out at a vehicle inspection station using a condensation particle counter (CPC) and a diffusion charger (DC). This article presents the results of measurements of 50 vehicles. Removal of the diesel particulate filter from a vehicle is prohibited but is a known phenomenon throughout the EU. The task of periodic technical inspections is to eliminate vehicles that are inoperative and do not meet the environmental protection requirements. However, to date, European vehicle inspection stations do not have an effective tool to counter tampering with diesel particulate filters. The performed measurements allowed us to prove the hypothesis that both methods of measurement allow the effective confirmation of the presence of DPF in a vehicle during the periodic technical inspection of the vehicle an... Keywords: high soil resistivity, impulse discharge performance, soil discharge, super absorbent polymer, X-ray imaging
When the lightning current enters the ground through the grounding system, the impulse dispersion performance can be observed by the phenomenon of soil spark discharge, which is fundamentally determined by the nearby soil. At present, engineers use an empirical formula to convert the soil spark discharge to the impulse coefficient of impulse grounding resistance. Therefore, there is no available quantitative analysis method to evaluate soil impulse dispersion performance. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an evaluation method for the impulse discharge efficiency of soil by using X-ray images, define VI as the parameter, which is the ratio of the volume of the discharge area to the peak current. Then, the rationality and validity of the method are verified. Finally, the variation rules of impulse discharge efficiency are analyzed in different soils. Results show that the VI can reflect the change rules of impulse dispersion performance more clearly under different soil conditio... [more]

Keywords: balancing services, carbon intensity, decarbonisation, net-zero carbon, power system
The electricity sector aims to achieve a balanced progress in all three dimensions of the energy trilemma: affordability, decarbonisation and security of supply. Separate strategies for decarbonisation and security of supply have been pursued; each with close attention to minimising costs, thus consistent with the affordability aspect of the trilemma. However, while it is evident that the pathway for decarbonisation increases pressure on security of supply, the pressures that cost-minimising security of supply measures are putting on decarbonisation goes unaddressed. The United Kingdom (UK) is a global leader in the transition towards a decarbonised economy and aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. As a major part of the UK, Great Britain (GB) has achieved greater than 50% of low-carbon electricity generation and the grid’s carbon intensity has dropped by 36% over the period 2015−2019. However, balancing services that provide security of supply uses only 8% of low-carbon generati... [more]

Hydrogen can be generated in situ within reservoirs containing hydrocarbons through chemical reactions. This technology could be a possible solution for low-emission hydrogen production due to of simultaneous CO2 storage. In gas fields, it is possible to carry out the catalytic methane conversion (CMC) if sufficient amounts of steam, catalyst, and heat are ensured in the reservoir. There is no confirmation of the CMC’s feasibility at relatively low temperatures in the presence of core (reservoir rock) material. This study introduces the experimental results of the first part of the research on in situ hydrogen generation in the Promyslovskoye gas field. A set of static experiments in the autoclave reactor were performed to study the possibility of hydrogen generation under reservoir conditions. It was shown that CMC can be realized in the presence of core and ex situ prepared Ni-based catalyst, under high pressure up to 207 atm, but at temperatures not lower than 450 °C. It can be conc... Keywords: electricity consumption efficiency, electrification, industrial electricity, South Korea
For this study, we conducted a decomposition analysis of industrial electricity consumption based on the logarithmic mean Divisia index approach. An empirical dataset consisting of 11 industrial sectors in Korea from 2000 to 2018 was used. The three-factor decomposition equation was extended to include four factors by decomposing the energy intensity effect into electrification and electricity consumption efficiency effects. The empirical results are summarized as follows: The increase in electricity consumption in the Korean industrial sector from 2000 to 2018 is mostly caused by the production effect. While the structure effect decreases electricity consumption, the intensity effect increases it. The key findings indicate that the hidden electrification effect can be confusing to researchers with regard to the intensity effect. The empirical evidence suggests that the intensity effect has a positive effect on electricity consumption induced by the electrification effect, although the... [more]

Keywords: racing tires, tire management, tire sensitivity, tire sliding power
Understanding the amount of energy a tire is subjected to is one of the key elements to perform in motorsport competitions, especially in Formula 1 feeder categories, where the number of tires is limited over the race weekend to contain costs. This forces teams to use worn tires towards the end of the event. Therefore, tires are usually chosen only relying on their external shape or based on the kilometers traveled. Moreover, being aware of how a setup change impacts tires can be a breakthrough in tire management, especially in tracks where tire wear is limiting the overall performance. This paper provides a scientific method aimed at helping race engineers in tire management to maintain a high performance level through the entire race weekend.

Keywords: in-situ pyrolysis, numerical simulation, oil shale, productivity analysis, thermal fluid pressure coupling
In this paper, the effect of heat injection on productivity of Fuyu oil shale during in-situ pyrolysis was studied by using heat flow coupling analysis method. It is found that fluid conducts heat transmission to the oil shale stratum mainly along the fissure formed by hydraulic fracturing. With the increase of heating time, the oil shale on both sides of fissures were effectively pyrolyzed, and the porosity of the formation increases and the diffusion range of the nitrogen to the oil shale stratum is also improved. After 200 days, the oil shale around the fractures first reaches the pyrolysis temperature, and 700 days later, the average temperature of the oil shale stratum reaches 500 °C; therefore, the whole oil shale can be effectively pyrolyzed. Productivity analysis shows that the best exploitation temperature is 500 °C. When the gas injection rate is in the range of 1.0~11.0 m3/min, different degrees of heat loss will occur, and the output is also different. The pyrolysis time re... [more]

For generating electricity, direct-drive wave energy converters (WECs) with linear permanent magnet generators (LPMGs) have advantages in terms of efficiency, simplicity, and force-to-weight ratio over WEC with rotary generators. However, the converter’s work under approaching-real wave conditions should be investigated. This paper studies the performance of a pico-scale WEC with two different LPMGs under unidirectional long-crested random waves. Different significant wave heights (using data in the Southern Ocean of Yogyakarta, Indonesia) and peak frequencies are tested. The JONSWAP energy spectrum is used to extract the wave elevations, while the MSS toolbox in MATLAB Simulink is employed to solve the floater’s dynamic responses. Next, the translator movements are extracted and combined with the flux distribution from FEMM simulation and analytical calculation, and the output powers are obtained. An experiment is conducted to test the output under constant speed. The results show for... [more]
