Physical Simulation Test of Underground Coal Gasification Cavity Evolution in the Horizontal Segment of U-Shaped Well
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cavity evolution, gasification cavity, physical simulation, temperature field, underground coal gasification
A key point in the underground coal gasification process is the cavity evolution in the horizontal segment. The morphological evolution law of the gasification cavity has not been clarified, which is the bottleneck restricting the analysis of its controllability. In this paper, a physical simulation system for cavity generation was developed, and the cavity evolution in a targeted coal seam with overburden pressure was duplicated in the laboratory. A set of temperature field synchronous monitoring devices was developed to realize temperature sampling within a cavity and the surrounding rock. By analyzing the relationship between the overall temperature distribution pattern and the gasification agent injection condition, the morphological propagation law of the cavity is verified to be water drop-shaped, and influencing factors including the injection flow rate and the gasification agent component ratio are investigated. The axial length and volume of the cavity increase with an increas... [more]

Experimental Evaluation of a Photovoltaic/Thermal Air Heater with Metal Mesh-Integrated Thermal Energy Storage System
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: metal meshes, photovoltaic/thermal, solar air heater, thermal energy storage
The objective of this study is to improve the performance of a hybrid photovoltaic/thermal (PV/T) air heater incorporating a thermal energy storage system (TESS) that uses paraffin and has metallic mesh layers. In the experimental part of the research, three different pilot-scale PV/Ts have been designed, manufactured, and experimentally investigated. The first system was structured as a conventional PV/T, while the second (PVT/TESS) was modified with a paraffin-based TESS. The efficiency of a hybrid PV/T air heater was improved by integrating a paraffin-based thermal energy storage system (TESS) with metallic mesh layers (PV/T-MTESS). The performance of the modified PV/T-MTESS system was compared to two other PV/T systems under the same weather conditions and air flow rate. The results of the experiment demonstrated that the integration of mesh layers into the TESS led to substantial improvements in the system’s thermal and electrical performance, as well as its overall exergy efficie... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: crystallinity, organic photovoltaics, push–pull molecules, synthesis of small molecules, thermal properties
The development of novel non-fullerene small-molecule acceptors (NFAs) with a simple chemical structure for high-performance organic solar cells (OSCs) remains an urgent research challenge to enable their upscaling and commercialization. In this work, we report on the synthesis and comprehensive investigation of two new acceptor molecules (BTPT-OD and BTPT-4F-OD), which have one of the simplest fused structures among the Y series of NFAs, along with the medium energy bandgap (1.85 eV−1.94 eV) and strong absorption in the visible and near-IR spectral range (700−950 nm). The novel NFAs have high thermal stability, good solubility combined with a high degree of crystallinity, and deep-lying levels of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (up to −3.94 eV). The BTPT-OD with indan-1-one-3-dicyanvinyl terminal acceptor group is superior to its counterpart BTPT-4F-OD with 5,6-difluorindan-1-one-3-dicyanvinyl group both in the number of synthetic steps and in the photovoltaic performance in O... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: heat transfer, metal hydride reactor, thermal management
Metal hydrides are a class of materials that can absorb and release large amounts of hydrogen. They have a wide range of potential applications, including their use as a hydrogen storage medium for fuel cells or as a hydrogen release agent for chemical processing. While being a technology that can supersede existing energy storage systems in manifold ways, the use of metal hydrides also faces some challenges that currently hinder their widespread applicability. As the effectiveness of heat transfer across metal hydride systems can have a major impact on their overall efficiency, an affluent description of more efficient heat transfer systems is needed. The literature on the subject has proposed various methods that have been used to improve heat transfer in metal hydride systems over the years, such as optimization of the shape of the reactor vessel, the use of heat exchangers, phase change materials (PCM), nano oxide additives, adding cooling tubes and water jackets, and adding high t... Can Carbon Trading Promote Low-Carbon Transformation of High Energy Consumption Enterprises?—The Case of China
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: carbon trading, carbon verification, equilibrium strategy, low-carbon transformation, tripartite evolutionary game
This paper explores the effect of carbon trading on low-carbon transformation of high energy consumption enterprises in China. Based on the mechanism of interaction and restriction among high energy consumption enterprises, carbon verification agencies and the government, a tripartite evolutionary game model is constructed. The three-dimensional dynamic system is built to analyze the behavior patterns of the three parties. The evolution path of the tripartite game is visualized, and the low-carbon transformation states of high energy consumption enterprises in different situations are described. The results show that the high energy consumption enterprises, verification organization and the government cannot reach the optimal game equilibrium (low-carbon transformation, verification and supervision) temporarily when seeking their own interests. The corresponding measures should be taken with different situations of the tripartite game. No matter what strategy the government chooses, th... [more]

April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: alternative energy, ARDL bounds test, China, CO2 emissions, VECM Granger test
This empirical study investigates the dynamic interconnection between fossil fuel consumption, alternative energy consumption, economic growth and carbon emissions in China over the 1981 to 2020 time period within a multivariate framework. The long-term relationships between the sequences are determined through the application of the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bounds test and augmented by the Johansen maximum likelihood procedure. The causal relationships between the variables are tested with the Granger causality technique based on the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM). Empirical results reveal the existence of a statistically significant negative relationship between alternative energy consumption and carbon emissions in the long-term equilibrium. Furthermore, the VECM results demonstrate that both carbon emissions and fossil fuel consumption have unidirectional effects on economic growth. Comparison of the Power Extraction Performance of an Oscillating Hydrofoil Turbine with Different Deflector Designs
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: deflector, flapping wing, FSI, oscillating wing, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, tidal turbine
The unsteady RANS equations for a two-dimensional hydrofoil were solved using ANSYS Fluent to model and simulate the hydrofoil at a constant Reynolds number, Re, of 2 × 105 and a fixed reduced frequency, f*, of 0.14. The simulations were performed by varying parameters, such as the number of deflectors N, tilt angle of the deflectors β, and vertical spacing of the deflectors J* = J/c, to determine the effect of the upstream deflector’s position on the hydrofoil’s performance. The results demonstrated that the deflector was effective at redirecting the separated flow away from the edges, which was then amplified downstream before colliding with the leading edge of the oscillating hydrofoil to increase power extraction. The performance of the oscillating hydrofoil was highly reliant on all three studied parameters. The hydrofoil with two deflectors (N = 2) displayed marginally superior power extraction capability compared to the hydrofoil with a single deflector (N = 1). Furthermore, the... [more]

Integrating Hydrokinetic Energy into Hybrid Renewable Energy System: Optimal Design and Comparative Analysis
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flow velocity model, hybrid renewable energy system, hydrokinetic energy, net present cost, optimal design
Renewable energy resources and energy efficiency measures are effective means of curtailing CO2 emissions. Solar and wind technologies have been mostly developed to meet the energy demand of off-grid remote areas or locations without grid connections. However, it is well-known that the power generation of these resources is affected by daily fluctuations and seasonal variability. One way to mitigate such an effect is to incorporate hydrokinetic resources into the energy system, which has not been well investigated yet. Therefore, this study examines the prospects of designing a hybrid system that integrates hydrokinetic energy to electrify an off-grid area. Hydrokinetic energy generation depends on water flow velocity (WFV). We estimate WFV by a model-based approach with geographical and weather data as inputs. Together with the models of the other components (wind turbine, PV panel, battery, and diesel generator) in the micro-grid, an optimization problem is formulated with the total... [more]
