Traveling Wave Energy Analysis of Faults on Power Distribution Systems
Miguel Jiménez-Aparicio, Matthew J. Reno, Felipe Wilches-Bernal
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distribution power systems, Parseval’s energy theorem, stationary wavelet transform, traveling waves
This paper explores the most important factors that define the Traveling Wave (TW) propagation on distribution systems. The factors considered in this work are: the distance to the fault location, the fault type, and the crossing of system elements (such as regulators, capacitor banks, laterals, and extra loads within the protection zones). This work uses a realistic, yet simplified, distribution system composed of two protection zones, in which, several combinations of the previously mentioned factors are considered. The simulated fault measurements undergo a signal processing stage in which, first, they are decomposed into independent modes using the Karrenbauer transform. Second, a time−frequency representation is obtained using the Stationary Wavelet Transform (SWT), dividing the signal into several frequency bands. Finally, the Parseval’s Energy (PE) theorem is applied to calculate the signal energy in each frequency band. A qualitative analysis is performed based on the previousl... [more]

Yi Wang, Tiejun Lu, Xianglei Liu, Adriano Sciacovelli, Yongliang Li
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: buoyancy, centrifugal force, convective heat transfer, helical coil, pseudocritical, supercritical nitrogen
This paper investigates the cryogenic heat transfer phenomena of nitrogen flowing in helically coiled tubes under the combined effects of pseudocritical conditions, buoyancy, and coil curvature. The ultimate goal was to design optimum heat exchangers for liquid air energy storage. Local heat transfer coefficients were evaluated peripherally across tube cross sections. The pressure, mass flux, and heat flux effects on the heat transfer were examined. The dual effect of buoyancy and coil curvature on heat transfer coefficients was interpreted via a dimensionless number Ψ, which denotes a ratio between the two effects. Results reveal that the heat transfer coefficients increase with increasing mass flux but decreasing pressure and heat flux. The buoyancy effect dominates the heat transfer at fluid temperatures below the pseudocritical temperature (e.g., −146.3 °C at 35 bar), while the coil curvature-induced centrifugal effect dominates at higher temperatures. The heat transfer coefficient... [more]

Nowadays, the usage of renewable energy resources (RER) is growing rapidly, but at the same time, the effective utilization of RER is also a challenging task. For the better usage of RER and the reduction of loss, the dual battery storage is proposed. The main aim of this work is to focus on the design and implementation of a reliable and renewable power generating system under a robust situation, along with a battery storage system. The perturb and observe (P&O) maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technique has been applied to improve the solar photovoltaic power production. In addition, the dual battery storage system is being introduced to improve the life cycle of the primary storage system. The proposed dual storage system is highly preferable for remote, location-based application systems, space applications and military operations. In the dual battery storage system, the batteries are working effectively with a good lifespan, when compared with the existing methods. To determine... [more]
Effect of Natural Ilmenite on the Solid Biomass Conversion of Inhomogeneous Fuels in Small-Scale Bubbling Fluidized Beds
Tanja Schneider, Dominik Müller, Jürgen Karl
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Biomass, bubbling fluidized bed, ilmenite, oxygen carrier, oxygen carrier aided combustion
The application of oxygen carriers as alternative bed material in fluidized bed combustion originates from chemical lopping processes. They serve as oxygen transport agents undergoing consecutive redox cycles. Thereby, oxygen carriers can provide surplus oxygen in oxygen-lean areas of fluidized bed combustion processes. In turn, re-oxidation takes place in oxygen-rich reactor parts. A more homogeneous combustion and reduced CO emissions follow during steady-state operation. However, especially regarding solid biomass conversion, inhomogeneous fuel qualities result in transient combustion conditions. Therefore, this research deals with the influence of the oxygen carrier ilmenite on solid biomass conversion. Separated batch experiments with methane (volatile), char and wood pellets took place in a laboratory bubbling fluidized bed reactor. They reveal that ilmenite enhances the in-bed CO2 yield by up to 63% during methane combustion. Batch char experiments confirm that solid−solid react... [more]
Opportunities and Challenges of Gasification of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) in Brazil
Durval Maluf Filho, Suani Teixeira Coelho, Danilo Perecin
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distributed generation, gasification, municipal solid waste, Syngas, waste to energy
The growth of the economy in urban centers is invariably accompanied by an increase in human activities and environmental interference, mainly related to waste generation. Due to the nature of these activities, large volumes of varied waste are generated daily without the establishment of compatible and adequate collection, logistics, and final disposal systems, bringing relevant impacts to society on health, the environment, and the economy itself. In Brazil, in 2019 alone, almost 30 million tons of MSW were not collected and the total collected, of approximately 44 million tons, went to landfills, with little or no energy use. There is therefore a great opportunity for energy use using this source, aiming not only to adapt to current legislation, but also to reduce GHG emissions, reduce the population’s exposure to sanitary landfills and open air, and use the energy contained in these wastes. The purpose of this study is to analyze the main conditions and challenges of current techno... [more]
Opportunity Analysis of Cogeneration and Trigeneration Solutions: An Application in the Case of a Drug Factory
Pavel Atănăsoae, Radu Dumitru Pentiuc, Laurențiu Dan Milici
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CHP, cogeneration, combined heat and power, heat load duration curve, opportunity analysis, trigeneration
Increasing the energy efficiency of a drug factory is the main purpose of this paper. Different configurations of cogeneration systems are analyzed to meet most of the heat demand and to flatten the heat load duration curve. Due to the variable nature of heat demand, there is a need for heat storage, but there is also a need for the fragmentation of power into two units of cogeneration to increase the operational flexibility in these plants. When the heat produced by the combined heat and power (CHP) unit is insufficient to meet the heat load, the heat stored can then be used to meet that demand. Heat storage plays a significant role in managing the heat supply and demand profiles in the CHP system, and in reducing its capacity and size. Trigeneration and heat storage are used as options to increase the operating time of cogeneration units and, implicitly, the amounts of heat and electricity generated in cogeneration. The results of this study demonstrate the economic and technical via... [more]

Xiangwu Yan, Tengyu Ma, Sen Cui, Qing Dong, Wenfei Chang, Ruibo Li, Tiecheng Li
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: AC excitation, doubly fed induction generator, frequency characteristics, transient stability
With the continuous increase in wind power penetration, doubly fed wind turbines can quickly respond to changes in grid frequency, and have particularly important inertia-response characteristics. This article starts with the excitation control principle of a doubly fed induction generator, compares the transient frequency characteristics of the synchronous generator under fault, and proposes that the doubly fed induction generator can control the speed or active power of the generator through excitation. It proves the unique “active power transient frequency characteristics” of doubly fed induction generators. Under different wind speeds, the inertia response capability of the wind turbine is quantified, and the degrees of influence of the inertia time constant and frequency characteristic slope of the doubly fed induction generator on the transient change process are analyzed. Finally, simulation and experiments verify the correctness of the above theory, which provides a basis for s... [more]
Study on Anode Catalyst Layer Configuration for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell with Enhanced Reversal Tolerance and Polarization Performance
Xia Sheng, Chunyu Ru, Honghui Zhao, Shouyi Jin, Bowen Wang, Yupeng Wang, Linghai Han, Kui Jiao
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: catalyst layer configuration, degradation mechanism, fuel cell, hydrogen starvation, reversal tolerance
Hydrogen starvation leads to the extreme deterioration of fuel cell performance due to the induced voltage reversal and carbon corrosion in the anode catalyst layer (ACL) and gas diffusion layer. In this paper, reversal-tolerant anodes (RTAs) with different ACL configurations are proposed, where IrOx/C is used as a water electrolysis catalyst. Experimental results show that the separate IrOx/C catalyst layer of MEA samples, layered reversal-tolerant catalyst-coated membrane (layered-RTA), and reversal-tolerant gas diffusion electrode (GDE-RTA) significantly enhance the reversal tolerance and cell performance compared to conventional anode and common RTA consisting of a homogeneous catalyst layer mixed with IrOx/C and Pt/C (hybrid-RTA). Of these, GDE-RTA possessed a reversal tolerance time of 86 min, a power density of 1.42 W cm−2, and a minimum degradation rate of 2.4 mV min−1, suggesting it to be the best RTA structure. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectrum were us... [more]

Lu Jiang, Bowenpeng Ding, Xiaonan Shi, Chunhua Li, Yamei Chen
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbon emission, community scale, household energy consumption, mega cites, spatial differentiation
Over the last 20 years, energy consumption in the residential sector in China has grown rapidly, and the growth is faster than that of any other energy form. To assess the limitations of the spatial characteristics of household energy consumption in urban areas, this paper selected Guangzhou as the research area. Specifically, the old town, core area, central area and peri-urban areas, which best reflect the evolutionary characteristics and spatial differentiation of households, were assessed. Based on the surveyed database of community-scale household energy consumption (N = 1097), the spatial heterogeneity of household energy consumption and carbon emissions at the community scale were assessed through exploratory spatial data analysis and the standard deviation ellipse method. The results report that (1) the main sources of energy consumption in Guangzhou households were water heating equipment, kitchen equipment and refrigeration equipment, which were related to the climatic condit... March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cryogenic energy storage, cryogenic Rankine cycle, cryogenics, exergy analysis, liquid air energy storage, round-trip efficiency
Energy storage plays a significant role in the rapid transition towards a higher share of renewable energy sources in the electricity generation sector. A liquid air energy storage system (LAES) is one of the most promising large-scale energy technologies presenting several advantages: high volumetric energy density, low storage losses, and an absence of geographical constraints. The disadvantages of LAES systems lay on the high investment cost, large-scale requirements, and low round-trip efficiency. This paper proposes a new configuration using an air Rankine cycle (ARC) to reduce the exergy destruction during heat-exchanging in the liquefaction process while reducing liquefaction power consumption. The addition of the ARC increases the round-trip efficiency of the LAES from 54.1% to 57.1%. Furthermore, the energy consumption per kg of liquid air drops 5.3% in comparison to the base case LAES system. The effects of compression, storage, and pumping pressure on the system performance... Yulin Liu, Dongming Wang, Xiaohan Ren
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ANN, Coal, LIBS, PCR, proximate analysis
Proximate analysis of coal is of great significance to ensure the safe and economic operation of coal-fired and biomass-fired power generation units. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) assisted by chemometric methods could realize the prediction of coal proximate analysis rapidly, which makes up for the shortcomings of the traditional method. In this paper, three quantitative models were proposed to predict the proximate analysis of coal, including principal component regression (PCR), artificial neural networks (ANNs), and principal component analysis coupled with ANN (PCA-ANN). Three model evaluation indicators, such as the coefficient of determination (R2), root-mean-square error of cross-validation (RMSECV), and mean square error (MSE), were applied to measure the accuracy and stability of the models. The most accurate and stable prediction of coal proximate analysis was achieved by PCR, of which the average R2, RMSECV, and MSE values were 0.9944, 0.39%, and 0.21, respecti... [more]

Keywords: biochar, biomass valorization, date palm seeds, hydrogen-rich syngas, model-free kinetics, pyrolysis
Pyrolysis has been demonstrated to be a highly effective thermochemical process for converting complex biomaterials into biochar and syngas rich in hydrogen. The pyrolysis of mixed date palm seeds from Saudi Arabia was conducted using a fixed-bed pyrolyzer that was custom made for the purpose. The influence of the pyrolysis temperature (200−1000 °C) on the various physicochemical parameters of the date seed biochar generated through the pyrolysis process and the hydrogen-rich syngas was investigated. Proximate and ultimate analyses indicated a high carbon content in the lignocellulosic constituents such as cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. Using energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, it was discovered that the elemental composition of biochar changes with the pyrolysis temperature. The date seeds pyrolyzed at 800 °C were found to have the maximum carbon concentration, with 97.99% of the total carbon content. The analysis of the biochar indicated a high concentration of carbon, as... [more]

Keywords: degradation, electrochemical performance, modified Ni-GDC electrode, post-test analyses, solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs), steam electrolysis
Ni-gadolinia-doped ceria (GDC) based electrode materials have drawn significant attention as an alternative fuel electrode for solid oxide cells (SOCs) owing to mixed ionic conductivity of GDC and high electronic and catalytic activity of Ni. Moreover, the catalytic activity and electrochemical performance of the Ni-GDC electrode can be further improved by dispersing small quantities of other metal additives, such as gold or molybdenum. Therefore, herein, we considered gold and molybdenum modified Ni-GDC electrodes and focused on the upscaling; hence, we prepared 5 × 5 cm2 electrolyte-supported single cells. Their electrochemical performance was investigated at different temperatures and fuel gas compositions. The long-term steam electrolysis test, up to 1700 h, was performed at 900 °C with −0.3 A·cm−2 current load. Lastly, post-test analyses of measured cells were carried out to investigate their degradation mechanisms. Sr-segregation and cobalt oxide formation towards the oxygen elec... [more]

Keywords: ash, Biofuels, calorific value, cones, energy properties, melting temperatures, pellets
A lot of residual biomass has energy value and can be used for further applications through suitable treatments, such as pelletization. This treatment can improve properties, mainly energy density, but can also lead to problems due to their low ash melting temperatures, high ash content, and the formation of harmful compounds during combustion. This article deals with the energy potential of pellets produced from spruce sawdust, spruce bark, and pine cones in different proportions. The impact of cone and bark contents on pellet properties was also observed. The energy properties of the produced pellets were measured, such as the contents of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, moisture, volatile, fixed carbon, and ash, as well as calorific values and ash melting temperatures. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the addition of pine cones and spruce bark to spruce sawdust mainly affected the contents of nitrogen and ash and melting temperatures. Despite this, all produced pellets met... [more]

Improving the performance of internal combustion engines (ICE), together with lowering emissions, are the main targets for specialists in the automotive field. One option for increasing engine efficiency is creating a considerable amount of boost for the inlet combustion air by means of supercharging. In addition to common turbochargers, an alternative solution that has interested researchers for almost a century is the pressure wave supercharger (PWS). This paper is, at first, a complimentary tribute to most of the researchers that studied, experimented with and improved PW supercharging technology from the 50′s to the present. Second, this review emphasizes the performance achieved by ICEs when using PW supercharging, highlighting the limits of these main parameters in different operating conditions, based on the main reported results in the literature. It also provides an overview of PW supercharging technology, with its main advantages and disadvantages and suggests some technical... [more]

Keywords: dual motor, electric vehicles, four wheel drive, four wheel drive, torque distribution, torque matching strategy
The market for electric vehicles is growing rapidly. Among them, the demand for a dual motor type 4 WD (Four -Wheel Driving) system is increasing. In this paper, we present the Torque Matching Strategy (TMS) method to select the optimal torque distribution ratio for dual motors. The TMS controller operates to set the optimal efficiency point by linearizing the drive efficiency combination of the two motors. Driving simulation and testing were performed through five drive cycles in the driver model interworking environment implemented in MATLAB and Carsim. The optimal distribution ratio was derived according to the front and rear gear ratios under the load condition, and the driving was verified by comparing it with the TMS control method. The efficiency was numerically verified by comparing the power loss of the driving motor. It reduced up to 34% in Urban Dynamometer Driving Schedule and up to 56.3% in Highway fuel efficiency test. The effectiveness of the TMS control method was demon... [more]

Pan He, Jian Xia
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aerodynamic characteristics, control system, low-level jet (LLJ), wind rotor, wind turbine
Accurate prediction of the aerodynamic characteristics of wind rotors subjected to various wind profiles is of considerable importance in the aerodynamics and structural design of wind turbines. As a very complex atmospheric phenomenon, the impact of a low-level jet (LLJ) on the aerodynamic characteristics of wind rotors is becoming more and more significant with the increase in wind turbine height. Additionally, during calculating the aerodynamic characteristics of the wind rotor, the known wind speed, rotor speed, and blade-pitch angle are generally required. However, when the wind profile is in the LLJ condition, it is difficult to determine the blade-pitch angle and rotor speed. Therefore, in this paper, the blade-element-momentum (BEM) method is exploited by considering the coupling with the generator-torque controller and blade-pitch controller. In order to solve the problem of the unknown rotor speed and blade-pitch angle under the LLJ condition, a C++ code is developed. Then, t... [more]

Keywords: backup protection, integrated impedance angle, PDC, PMU, renewable energies sources, RTDS, virtual bus, WAMPAC, wide area protection
Many wide area monitoring, protection, and control (WAMPAC) systems are being deployed by grid operators to deal with critical operational conditions that may occur in power systems. Thanks to the real-time measurements provided by a set of distributed phasor measurement units (PMUs), different protection algorithms can be run in a central location. In this context, this article presents and validates a novel method that can be used as a backup protection for a selected area in a power system. It merges the integrated impedance angle (IIA) protection method with the theory of virtual buses in wide area electrical power systems. The backup protection works this way: once a fault is detected (pickup time), another delay (added to the pickup time) is defined in order to wait for the primary protection to act. If this does not happen, the algorithm generates its backup trip. The proposed method has been called the zone integrated impedance angle (Zone IIA). A real-time PMU laboratory has b... [more]

Keywords: cold storage, off grid, photovoltaic design, rural development
This paper presents design considerations for the design and implementation of stand-alone photovoltaic-powered containerized cold storage solutions for rural off-grid applications. The work presented is based on a case study of an off-grid photovoltaic-powered cold storage unit located in rural South Africa. Although solar-powered solutions for off-grid rural applications are very attractive and offer many benefits, including increased food security, skills development, income generation, and productivity due to the presence of solar power, the application of cold storage requires careful consideration of the design aspects to ensure that the solution is feasible and sustainable. The challenge of maintaining low temperatures inside a cold storage system in an excessively warm environment, such as that frequently encountered in most African rural settings, has stimulated discussions of design considerations for optimal efficiency. Not only are the design aspects of the PV panel mountin... [more]

Keywords: carbonate gas reservoir, development technologies, geological characteristics, Ordos Basin, weathering crust formation
The carbonate gas reservoir is one of the most important gas formation types; it comprises a large proportion of the global gas reserves and the annual gas production rate. However, a carbonate reservoir with weathering crust formation is rare, and it is of significant interest to illustrate the geological characteristics of this kind of formation and present the emerging problems and solution measures that have arisen during its exploitation. Therefore, in this research, a typical carbonate gas reservoir with weathering crust formation that is located in Ordos Basin, China, was comprehensively studied. In terms of formation geology, for this reservoir, the distribution area is broad and there are multiple gas-bearing layers with low abundance and strong heterogeneity, which have led to large differences in gas well production performance. Some areas in this reservoir are rich in water, which seriously affects gas well production. Regarding production dynamics, the main production area... [more]

Keywords: cooling performance, discrete-slot orifice, hot test, near-injector region, rocket engine
In the present study, a hydrogen and oxygen heat-sink engine thrust chamber and the corresponding injection faceplate with discrete slot orifices are devised to study the cooling performance near the faceplate region. Moreover, a set of experiments and numerical simulations are conducted to evaluate the effects of various factors on combustion performance and film cooling efficiency. According to the obtained result, the circumferential cooling efficiency has an M-shaped distribution in the near-injector region. Furthermore, it has been discovered that when the film flow ratio increases, so does the cooling efficiency. This is especially more pronounced in the range of 30−80 mm from the faceplate. The cooling efficiency is found to be proportional to the film flow rate ratio’s 0.4 power. Compared with the slot thickness, the reduction in the slot width is more beneficial in improving the cooling efficiency, and the advantage is more prominent for small film flow ratios. In addition, wh... [more]

Keywords: alkaline electrolyzer, dynamic operation, electrolyte conductivity, hydrogen generation, Modelling
Alkaline electrolyzers are the most widespread technology due to their maturity, low cost, and large capacity in generating hydrogen. However, compared to proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers, they request the use of potassium hydroxide (KOH) or sodium hydroxide (NaOH) since the electrolyte relies on a liquid solution. For this reason, the performances of alkaline electrolyzers are governed by the electrolyte concentration and operating temperature. Due to the growing development of the water electrolysis process based on alkaline electrolyzers to generate green hydrogen from renewable energy sources, the main purpose of this paper is to carry out a comprehensive survey on alkaline electrolyzers, and more specifically about their electrical domain and specific electrolytic conductivity. Besides, this survey will allow emphasizing the remaining key issues from the modeling point of view.
