Numerical Study on the Long-Term Performance and Load Imbalance Ratio for Medium-Shallow Borehole Heat Exchanger System
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: borehole heat exchanger array, load imbalance ratio, load shifting, long-term performance, medium-shallow borehole heat exchanger
To contribute to the goal of carbon neutralization, the closed-loop borehole heat exchanger system is widely applied to use geothermal energy for building cooling and heating. In this work, a new type of medium-shallow borehole heat exchanger (MSBHE) is proposed, which is coaxial type and has a depth range between 200 m to 500 m. To investigate the long-term performance of MSBHE in the area with unbalanced cooling and heating load of buildings and the sustainable load imbalance ratio under different design parameters, a comprehensive numerical model is established. The results show that the drilling depth significantly influences the sustainable load imbalance ratio of MSBHE. As the drilling depth is increased from 200 m to 500 m, the load imbalance ratio of the MSBHE increases from 20.76% to 60.29%. In contrast, the load imbalance ratio is always kept at the same level with different inlet velocities and operation modes. Furthermore, in a 9-MSBHE array system, the heat exchanger locat... [more]

Synchronizing Torque-Based Transient Stability Index of a Multimachine Interconnected Power System
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electromechanical oscillations, model-based analysis, power system dynamics, power system stability, rotor angle stability, stability margin, synchronizing torque, synchronizing torque coefficient, transient stability analysis
Newly developed tools and techniques are continuously established to analyze and monitor power systems’ transient stability limits. In this paper, a model-based transient stability index for each generator is proposed from the synchronizing torque contributions of all other connected generators in a multi-machine interconnected power system. It is a new interpretation of the generator’s synchronizing torque coefficient (STC) in terms of electromechanical oscillation modes to consider the synchronizing torque interactions among generators. Thus, the system operator can continuously monitor the system’s available secured transient stability limit in terms of synchronizing torque more accurately, which is helpful for planning and operation studies due to the modal based index. Furthermore, the popular transient stability indicator critical clearing time (CCT), and the traditionally determined synchronizing torque values without other generator contributions, are calculated to verify and c... Artificial Sun—A Stand to Test New PVT Minimodules
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: artificial sun, measurement stand, photovoltaic thermal
Hybrid photovoltaic thermal (PVT) modules have gained more attention because of their benefits of higher total efficiency and lower gross area of installation in comparison with photovoltaic (PV) or solar thermal collectors (T). Although international standards for separate panels, photovoltaics, or thermal collectors are available, the lack of testing procedures for PVT panels is a problem, especially if a high level of integration between the two parts is implemented. In the paper, a new stand to test new PVT minimodules is proposed and verified. It allows a reduction of the influence of environmental conditions on the tested T or PVT structures. Research conducted on lamp configurations confirms the possibility of achieving a high uniformity of light intensity, with values close to the AM1.5 spectrum standard (1049 ± 34 W/m2). The first measurements of new PVT minimodules have proven their usefulness, as well as the potential of a new hybrid solution.

Investigations on the Effect of Pre-Treatment of Wheat Straw on Ash-Related Issues in Chemical Looping Gasification (CLG) in Comparison with Woody Biomass
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: agglomeration, Biomass, chemical looping gasification, fouling and slagging, high temperature corrosion, poisoning of oxygen carrier, pre-treatment, release and fate of inorganic species
Biomass chemical looping gasification (BCLG) is a promising autothermic route for producing sustainable, N2-free, and carbon neutral syngas for producing liquid biofuels or high value hydrocarbons. However, different ash-related issues, such as high-temperature corrosion, fouling and slagging, bed agglomeration, or poisoning of the oxygen carrier might cause significant ecologic and economic challenges for reliable implementation of BCLG. In this work, lab-scale investigations under gasification-like conditions at 950 °C and thermodynamic modelling were combined for assessing the influence of composition, pre-treatment methods, such as torrefaction and water-leaching, and Ca-based additives on the release and fate of volatile inorganics, as well as on ash melting behavior. A deep characterization of both (non-)condensable gas species and ash composition behavior, joint with thermodynamic modelling has shown that different pre-treatment methods and/or Ca-additives can significantly coun... Power and Energy Management of a DC Microgrid for a Renewable Curtailment Case Due to the Integration of a Small-Scale Wind Turbine
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: DC microgrid, energy management, Optimization, power management, shedding constraints, small-scale wind turbine, supervisory system
Economic dispatch optimization and power management are the main concerns for a microgrid (MG). They are always studied and are considered to achieve an efficient operation of the MG by simplifying the control process and decreasing losses. The integration of a small-scale wind turbine (SSWD) into a direct current (DC) MG has an impact on its power and energy management. Excess power produced by renewable energy sources (RESs) is one of the problems that face the reliability of the MG and should be resolved. For this reason, a supervisory system is suggested to manage the excess of power. During the supervision process, some criteria, such as the physical limits and tariffs of the components are taken into account. Then, the suggested power management strategy aims to achieve an instantaneous power balance considering a rule-based power and depends on the above-mentioned criteria. To better meet the power balance, it is necessary to explore the constraints related to the control and su... [more]

Keywords: Biofuels, biomass residues, co-design, energy needs, GHG, local market
This study analyzes the household energy needs of the indigenous community of San Francisco Pichátaro, Michoacán, Mexico, and the use of Pinus spp. wood residues for the production of briquettes. The energy and emission performances of wood briquettes were evaluated on the field and in the laboratory. On-field surveys and measurements show that most users combine the use of fuelwood and LPG for cooking and heating water, and 65% of people use fuelwood daily (40% of houses consumed more than 39 kg per week). The use of biomass waste is an energy option in rural communities and contributes to reducing firewood consumption and mitigating GHGs. Briquettes gasification to heat water reduces 74% of GHG emissions, increases the thermal efficiency by 30%, and reduces pollutant emissions of CO, CH4, and PM2.5, NMHC, EC, and OC by 50% to 75% compared to a three-stone fire. The use of briquettes on the Patsari stove showed energy savings of 12% and a 36% reduction in CO2e compared to the “U” type... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CO2 seal, hydraulic fracturing history, source, Tuscaloosa Marine Shale, unconventional reservoirs
The Tuscaloosa Marine Shale (TMS) is a versatile Late Cretaceous shale formation present in central and SE Louisiana and SW Mississippi, which drew attention because of the various roles played within the Tuscaloosa Group. In this paper, it is debated whether the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale can act as a source, reservoir, or seal all throughout the shale play or only in certain areas. Well log and core data from Adams County, Mississippi, are compared to data from East Feliciana Parish in Louisiana. Conclusions were drawn based on the results of well log analysis, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), porosity−permeability measurements, programmed pyrolysis, and fracture analysis. It was shown that the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale interval in SE Louisiana consists of important amounts of calcite, exhibits multiple natural fractures, has porosity values as high as 9.3%, and shows a TOC content of up to 2.8 wt%. On the other hand, samples from a well at the Cranfield field, MS, are characterized by considerab... [more]

The Impact of Oil Price Fluctuations on Consumption, Output, and Investment in China’s Industrial Sectors
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CGE model, crude oil price, industrial sectors
This paper aims to simulate and evaluate the impacts of increases and decreases in oil price on industrial sectors in China. We develop an oil-economy computable general equilibrium (OE-CGE) model with crude oil as an important factor in production. The transmission mechanism of crude oil price swings to various industrial sectors is described in the model. We calibrate parameters in the model parameters using input-output data. In addition, we simulate the rise and fall of oil prices in the model and assess the impact of crude oil prices on various industrial sectors. The results show that crude oil price changes have the greatest impact on the output and consumption of crude oil and gas extraction products sector, crude oil refined coke products, and processed nuclear fuel products sector. The investment of public utilities sector is the most sensitive to changes in crude oil price. When the price of crude oil changes, its investment drops significantly. Crude oil price stability is... Forecasting Charging Point Occupancy Using Supervised Learning Algorithms
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: charging points, electric vehicles, forecasting, occupancy, supervised learning
The prediction of charging point occupancy enables electric vehicle users to better plan their charging processes and thus promotes the acceptance of electromobility. The study uses Adaptive Charging Network data to investigate a public and a workplace site for predicting individual charging station occupancy as well as overall site occupancy. Predicting individual charging point occupancy is formulated as a classification problem, while predicting total occupancy is formulated as a regression problem. The effects of different feature sets on the predictions are investigated, as well as whether a model trained on data of all charging points per site performs better than one trained on the data of a specific charging point. Reviewed studies so far, however, have failed to compare these two approaches to benchmarks, to use more than one algorithm, or to consider more than one site. Therefore, the following supervised machine-learning algorithms were applied for both tasks: linear and log... [more]

Solar Concentrator Bio-Inspired by the Superposition Compound Eye for High-Concentration Photovoltaic System up to Thousands Fold Factor
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bioinspired optical components, high concentration ratio, high CPV system, homogenizer, solar concentrator
We have proposed a fruitful design principle targeting a concentration ratio (CR) >1000× for a typical high concentrating photovoltaics (HCPV) system, on account of a two-concentrator system + homogenizer. The principle of a primary dual-lens concentrator unit, completely analogous basic optics seen in the superposition compound eyes, is a trend not hitherto reported for solar concentrators to our knowledge. Such a concentrator unit, consisting of two aspherical lenses, can be applied to minify the sunlight and reveal useful effects. We underline that, at this stage, the CR can be attained by two orders of magnitude simply by varying the radius ratio of such two lenses known from the optics side. The output beam is spatially minimized and nearly parallel, exactly as occurs in the superposition compound eye. In our scheme, thanks to such an array of dual-lens design, a sequence of equidistant focal points is formed. The secondary concentrator consists of a multi-reflective channel, whic... [more]

In Situ Growth of COF on PAN Nanofibers to Improve Proton Conductivity and Dimensional Stability in Proton Exchange Membranes
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: covalent organic frameworks, dimensional stability, electrospinning, fuel cell, nanofibers, perfluorosulfonic acid, polyacrylonitrile, proton exchange membranes
Perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) polymer is considered as a proton exchange membrane material with great potential. Nevertheless, excessive water absorption caused by abundant sulfonic acid groups makes PFSA have low dimensional stabilities. In order to improve the dimensional stability of PFSA membranes, nanofibers are introduced into PFSA membranes. However, because nanofibers lack proton conducting groups, it usually reduces the proton conductivities of PFSA membranes. It is a challenge to improve dimensional stabilities while maintaining high proton conductivities. Due to the structural designability, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with proton conductive groups are chosen to improve the overall performance of PFSA membranes. Herein, COFs synthesized in situ on three-dimensional PAN nanofibers were introduced into PFSA to prepare PFSA@PAN/TpPa-SO3H sandwiched membranes. The PFSA@PAN/TpPa-SO3H-5 composite membrane exhibited outstanding proton conductivity, which reached 260.81 mS·cm... [more]

Genetically Optimized Extended Kalman Filter for State of Health Estimation Based on Li-Ion Batteries Parameters
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: equivalent circuit model, genetic algorithm (GA), Kalman filter, lithium-ion battery, online parameters estimation, state of health (SOH)
The state of health (SOH) is among the most important parameters to be monitored in lithium-ion batteries (LIB) because it is used to know the residual functionality in any condition of aging. The paper focuses on the application of the extended Kalman filter (EKF) for the identification of the parameters of a cell model, which are required for the correct estimation of the SOH of the cell. This article proposes a methodology for tuning the covariance matrices of the EKF by using an optimization process based on genetic algorithms (GA). GAs are able to solve the minimization problems for the non-linear functions, and they are better than other optimization algorithms such as gradient descent to avoid the local minimum. To validate the proposed method, the cell parameters obtained from the EKF are compared with a reference model, in which the parameters have been determined with proven procedures. This comparison is carried out with different cells and in the whole range of the cell’s S... [more]

Lean Burn Flame Kernel Characterization for Different Spark Plug Designs and Orientations in an Optical GDI Engine
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flame kernel, lean burn, optically accessible engine, spark plug design
Lean burn spark ignition (SI) engines represent an effective solution for improving fuel economy and reducing exhaust emissions and can be implemented both in conventional and hybrid powertrains. On the other hand, lean operation increases cyclic variability with negative impact on power output, engine efficiency, roughness, and operating stability. Although this phenomenon has been widely investigated, the effects of flow field on the inception and development of flames in direct injection spark ignition (DISI) engines under lean burn conditions is not yet completely understood. In particular, the effect of spark plug geometry and electrode orientation with respect to tumble motion has been minimally investigated. For these reasons, two different spark-plug geometries (i.e., single- and double-ground electrode) and three different orientations (i.e., cross-, counter-, and uni-flow with respect to the direction of tumble motion) were investigated in an optically accessible DISI engine... Renewable Energy, Urbanization, and CO2 Emissions: A Global Test
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CO2 emissions, innovation, patents, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, urbanization
A fixed effects regression and two-step system generalized method of moments (GMM) is used to analyze secondary data from the World Bank, covering 163 countries over the period from 2000 to 2016. The study tests the relationship between renewable energy, urbanization, and CO2 emissions. The empirical results show that urbanization has an inverted U-shaped relationship with CO2 emissions, while renewable energy consumption mitigates CO2 emissions. If causal, a 1% increase in renewable energy use leads to a 1.2% decrease in CO2 emissions. The results also show that the GDP per capita has an inverted U-shaped relationship with CO2 emissions, confirming the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC). We also found that innovation, proxied by residents’ patents, has a non-linear effect on CO2 emissions. As a policy implication, developing countries should increase the share of renewable energy in their total energy use, and promote innovative activities by increasing government spending on R&D.

Technical Development and Economic Evaluation of the Integration of Thermal Energy Storage in Steam Power Plants
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coal-fired power plants, heat storage, power plant flexibilization, TES, thermal energy storage
Grid-compliant integration of renewable energies will in future require considerable increases in flexibility in the operation of conventional power plants. The integration of thermal energy storage systems (TES) into the power plant process can create considerable improvements, for example, in the speed of load change and partial load behavior. In the case of existing plants, there are thus good prospects of upgrading for more flexible operation, which promises improvements in the energy system that can be achieved in the relatively short term. The aim of this publication is, therefore, to identify integration options for TES in coal-fired power plants which would enable the desired high flexibility potentials and, at the same time, include cost-efficient solutions. By means of an iterative approach between future scenarios of the energy market, the power plant process, and the TES component, favored configurations were developed from a wide range of integration concepts. A Straightforward Approach to Site-Wide Assessment of Wind Turbine Tower Lifetime Extension Potential
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: damageequivalent loads, fatigue damage, lifetime extension, site assessment, wind farms, wind turbine tower
This contribution presents a novel methodology to evaluate the lifetime extension potential of wind turbines—taking towers as the key component that preserves onshore turbines’ structural integrity—as a consequence of the difference between design and site-specific loads. Specifically, attention is drawn to the site-specific wind direction distribution, which provides an additional source of lifetime extension potential. For this purpose, variants of closed-form solutions (based on the tower section’s normal stress) are developed to enable fatigue damage accumulation due to fore-aft and side-to-side bending moments at any point on the tower circumference without the need for further information on tower section geometry or material properties. Based on the degree of data availability, different scenarios are defined to estimate lifetime extension potential from the accurate tower’s normal stress and approximations using resultant bending moment, fore-aft bending moment, and finally, wi... Nonlinear Hydraulic Vibration Modeling and Dynamic Analysis of Hydro-Turbine Generator Unit with Multiple Faults
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: high variability, hydraulic vibration, hydro-turbine generator unit, nonlinear dynamics
Hydraulic vibration is a critical factor affecting the stability and health of the hydro-turbine generator unit (HGU). This paper investigates the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of the HGU occurring from the hydraulic vibration. First, using the turbulence flow model, the lift and drag coefficients of the asymmetric airfoil blades are calculated at different Reynolds numbers and angles of attack. Based on the lift and drag coefficients of the asymmetric airfoil blade, a novel nonlinear mathematical model of asymmetric hydraulic forces is proposed for the asymmetric airfoil blade. Then, combining mechanic and electric asymmetric excitations, a coupled nonlinear mathematical model of the HGU is built using Lagrange equations. Moreover, the correctness of this model is verified. Finally, dynamic behaviors of the HGU changing with attack angle, deviation of the outlet blade angle, outlet guide vane angle, and Reynolds number are analyzed by bifurcation diagrams. It is found that increas... [more]

Bioprocesses for the Biodiesel Production from Waste Oils and Valorization of Glycerol
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biodiesel, bioprocesses, crude glycerol, purification, valorization, waste oils
The environmental context causes the use of renewable energy to increase, with the aim of finding alternatives to fossil-based products such as fuels. Biodiesel, an alternative to diesel, is now a well-developed solution, and its production from renewable resources makes it perfectly suitable in the environmental context. In addition, it is biodegradable, non-toxic and has low greenhouse gas emissions: reduced about 85% compared to diesel. However, the feedstock used to produce biodiesel competes with agriculture and the application of chemical reactions is not advantageous with a “green” process. Therefore, this review focuses only on bioprocesses currently taking an important place in the production of biodiesel and allow high yields, above 90%, and with very few produced impurities. In addition, the use of waste oils as feedstock, which now accounts for 10% of feedstocks used in the production of biodiesel, avoids competition with agriculture. Keywords: green ammonia, green hydrogen carriers, power to ammonia to power (P2A2P), small island developing states (SIDS)
Recently, we demonstrated for Curaçao that renewable electricity generation from wind combined with energy storage in the form of ammonia is competitive with imported fossil fuels, such as LNG, oil, and coal. In the current work, we have expanded the model by considering imported green ammonia as an alternative to local electricity generation and storage. Local production of ammonia as an energy storage medium was compared with imported ammonia to make up the electricity produced from onshore wind, for Curaçao and Fiji’s largest island Viti Levu. Curaçao and Viti Levu have been selected as two interesting extremes with favorable and non-favorable wind conditions, respectively. Assuming a market price of 500 USD/t NH3, it is found that importing ammonia is the most feasible solution for both islands, with a levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) of 0.11 USD/kWh for Curaçao and 0.37 USD/kWh for Viti Levu.
