Review of Transparent and Semi-Transparent Building-Integrated Photovoltaics for Fenestration Application Modeling in Building Simulations
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: building simulation, photovoltaic, PV glazing, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar energy, transparent BIPV
Building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) have attracted interest due to their capacity to feasibly supply buildings with renewable power generation, helping to achieve net-zero or net-positive energy goals. BIPV systems include many different solutions depending on the application, the PV technology, and the envelope material they substitute. Among BIPV systems, the last two decades have seen a rising interest in transparent and semi-transparent BIPV (T- and ST-BIPV), which add features such as daylighting and solar radiation control. T- and ST-BIPV mainly consist of opaque PV cells embedded in fenestration systems (PV cladding), while most recent research considers semi-transparent PV cells (homogeneous PV glazing) with improved optical properties. The evaluation of T- and ST-BIPV systems in building performance is complex, as it needs to combine optical, thermal, electrical, and daylighting calculations. Therefore, adequate modeling tools are key to the development of these technolog... [more]

Experimental Study of the Effect of Air Filter Pressure Drop on Internal Combustion Engine Performance
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air filter pressure drop, engine power, hourly and specific fuel consumption, internal combustion engines, smoke opacity
The paper presents the problem of the effect of air filter pressure drop on the operating parameters of a modern internal combustion engine with compression ignition. A literature analysis of the results of investigations of the effect of air filter pressure drop on the filling, power and fuel consumption of carburetor and diesel engines with classical injection system was carried out. It was shown that each increase in the air filter pressure drop Δpf by 1 kPa results in an average decrease in engine power by SI 1−1.5% and an increase in specific fuel consumption by about 0.7. For compression ignition engines, the values are 0.4−0.6% decrease in power and 0.3−0.5% increase in specific fuel consumption. The values of the permissible resistance of the air filter flow Δpfdop determined from the condition of 3% decrease in engine power are given, which are at the level of 2.5−4.0 kPa—passenger car engines, 4−7 kPa—truck engines and 9−12 kPa—special purpose vehicles. Experimental Investigation on Solar−Thermal Conversion and Migration Characteristics of Nanofluids
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: migration characteristics, nanofluids, solar energy, solar–thermal conversion characteristics
Solar−thermal conversion and migration characteristics of nanofluids have attracted intensive attention recently. Due to the strong absorption of solar energy, solar collectors with nanofluids have wide applications in many areas including desalination and power generation. Researchers have mainly focused on the macroscopic performance of nanofluids in solar collectors, but the nanoparticles’ migration characteristics with vapor during phase transformation have not been further investigated. Therefore, an experimental investigation on solar−thermal conversion characteristics of nanofluids and migration characteristics with vapor during phase transformation was conducted in this work, in order to verify the enhancement effect of nanoparticles on solar energy absorption and explore the nanoparticles’ migration behavior with vapor. It was found that part of Ag nanoparticles migrate out of the nanofluids with generated vapor by boiling nanofluids, and most of the nanoparticles remained in... [more]

Variation Characteristic Analysis of Water Content at the Flow Channel of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: accuracy, flow channel, Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells, water content, WCR model
The performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) is directly affected by the nonlinear variations in water content. To study the variation in water content and its effect on PEMFC performance, the water condensation rate (WCR) model is established, which determines the proportional relationship between evaporation and condensation rates in terms of the switch function, and the two-phase flow evolution and pressure drop are considered as well. The WCR model is imported into Fluent software through a user-defined function for simulation, and the test system is established under different operating conditions. Then, the contours of H2O molar concentrations and polarization curves are analyzed and compared. The results show that the condensation rate value of the cathode channel is from 1.05 to 1.55 times higher than that of the anode channel. The WCR model can predict the variation in water content and improve the accuracy of the performance calculation by from 9% to 31%. T... [more]

Interactions between Seismic Safety and Energy Efficiency for Masonry Infill Walls: A Shift of the Paradigm
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: costs, energy performance, masonry infill walls, strengthening interventions, structural safety
Currently, the upgrade of existing reinforced concrete (RC) buildings focuses only on energy retrofitting measures due to the current policies promoted in the scope of the European Green Deal. However, the structural deficiencies are not eliminated, leaving the building seriously unsafe despite the investment, particularly in seismic-prone regions. Moreover, the envelopes of existing RC buildings are responsible for their energy efficiency and seismic performance, but these two performance indicators are not usually correlated. They are frequently analyzed independently from each other. Based on this motivation, this research aimed to perform a holistic performance assessment of five different types of masonry infill walls (i.e., two non-strengthened walls, two walls with seismic strengthening, and one wall with energy strengthening). This performance assessment was performed in a three-step procedure: (i) energy performance assessment by analyzing the heat transfer coefficient of each... [more]

Multi-Cell-to-Multi-Cell Battery Equalization in Series Battery Packs Based on Variable Duty Cycle
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: active equalization, lithium-ion battery, multi-cell-to-multi-cell (MC2MC), variable duty cycle
Batteries are widely used in our lives, but the inevitable inconsistencies in series-connected battery packs will seriously impact their energy utilization, cycle life and even jeopardize their safety in use. This paper proposes a balancing topology structure combining Buck-Boost circuit and switch array to reduce this inconsistency. This structure can realize multi-cell-to-multi-cell (MC2MC) battery balancing by controlling the switch array and having a fast balancing speed, easy expansion and few magnetic components. Then, the operation principle of the proposed balancing topology is analyzed, and the simulation model is verified. In addition, the effects of switching frequency and voltage difference on the equalization effect are further analyzed. The results show that the higher the switching frequency, the lower the time efficiency, but the higher the energy efficiency. The voltage difference significantly impacts the duty cycle, so it is absolutely necessary to introduce a variab... [more]

Effect of the Air Flow on the Combustion Process and Preheating Effect of the Intake Manifold Burner
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cold-start, diesel engine, flame, instability, intake manifold burner, preheat
Diesel engines show poor performance and high emissions under cold-start conditions. The intake manifold burner is an effective method to increase the intake air temperature and improve engine performance. In this paper, a visualization system was employed to investigate the combustion process of the intake manifold burner. The effects of diesel flow rate and airflow velocity on combustion performance were investigated. The combustion process of the intake manifold burner showed four stages: preparing stage A, rapid development stage B, steady-development stage C, and stable stage D. Flame stripping was found in stages C and D, presenting the instability of the combustion process. With the increase in air flow velocity from 1.4 m/s to 3.0 m/s, the flame stripping was enhanced, leading to the increasing combustion instability and regular flame penetration fluctuations. The average temperature rise and combustion efficiency increased with the increasing diesel flow rate, indicating the c... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: finite element method, microwave, oil shale, pyrolysis, Simulation
The pyrolysis characteristics of oil shale during heat treatment dominate the oil production of kerogen. In this study, the pyrolysis characteristics of oil shale in a laboratory microwave apparatus were investigated based on a novel fully coupled three-dimensional electromagnetic-thermal-chemical-hydraulic model according to the experimental microwave apparatus. By simulating the electric field, temperature distribution, and kerogen decomposition within oil shale subjected to microwave irradiation, several parameters, including waveguide, position, and power, were successfully optimized. The results indicated that the non-uniform temperature distribution was consistent with the distribution of the electric field. Double microwave ports were more effective than single ports in terms of heating rate and temperature uniformity. There was an optimal location where the highest heating efficiency was obtained, which was on the left of the cavity center. When irradiation was conducted over a... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aviation piston engine, bio-jet fuel, RP-3 jet fuel, thermochemical conversion of triglyceride
Bio-jet fuels prepared by the thermochemical conversion of triglyceride can be used as complete substitutes of jet fuels. A bio-jet fuel prepared as a substitute of the RP-3 jet fuel and the RP-3 jet fuel itself were, respectively, used to fuel a small aviation piston engine. The characteristic tests of the engine were carried out, and the performances of the power, economy, emissions, and heat release law of the engine fueled with the two fuels were analyzed. The feasibility of the bio-jet fuel as a substitute for the RP-3 jet fuel was proved by the experimental results, which show that when the engine is fueled with the bio-jet fuel, the power and economy performance do not deteriorate; however, the HC emissions increase at small and medium throttle openings, while at large throttle openings, the performances of power and economy decreases, the emissions of HC and NOx increase, and the CO emission decreases. The bio-jet fuel is more prone to spontaneous combustion than the RP-3 jet f... [more]

A Profitability Analysis for an Aggregator in the Ancillary Services Market: An Italian Case Study
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aggregator, ancillary services market, energy management model, virtual energy units
The integration of renewable energy sources into the energy system requires both new investment in network infrastructures, and the introduction of new models of energy management. In this framework, new structures of collaborations were born: the aggregator is one of them. It involves grouping different players of the power system, acting, however, as a single entity both when it participates in the electricity markets and sells services to the operator. In this work, a new methodology to determine the optimal revenue of a Unità Virtuali Abilitate Miste (UVAM), which is an Italian virtual energy unit managed by an aggregator, is proposed. The methodology is articulated in several steps, the core of which is represented by the two models: (1) a cost−benefit analysis in order to identify the main costs/benefits that impact on the UVAM’ revenues; and (2) a decision-making model based on the sensitive analysis to capture the optimal interaction between users and aggregator. Multi-Parameter Analysis of Gas Losses Occurring during the Determination of Methane-Bearing Capacity in Hard Coal Beds
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hard coal, lost gas, methane, methane hazard, methane-bearing capacity
The content of natural methane in hard coal seams, called methane-bearing capacity, is the basic parameter that enables the level of methane hazard to be determined in hard coal mines. This parameter is also used to determine the potential quantities of methane that can be collected and used for energy purposes and the amount of its harmful emission to the atmosphere. Direct methods are most often used to determine methane-bearing capacity. An important aspect that has a great influence on the final result of the research is the gas losses generated at the stage of sampling. Under the conditions of the Polish mining industry, the direct drill cuttings method is used to determine the methane-bearing capacity. Gas losses are compensated for in this method with the use of the coefficient 1.12, by which the obtained result is multiplied. In this paper, a multi-parameter analysis of gas loss in the determination of methane-bearing capacity in hard coal seams has been carried out. Several ex... [more]

Theoretical Study on the Micro-Flow Mechanism of Polymer Flooding in a Double Heterogeneous Oil Layer
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: front length coefficient, heterogeneous oil layer, injection method, permeability contrast, wettability
Critical issues in the development of oil fields include the differences in the layer properties as well as serious interlayer conflicts and disturbances that can lead to the formation of a preferential flow pathway. In order to understand the interlayer disturbance mechanism between the heterogeneous oil layers, mathematical models of the polymer, and oil two-phase micro-flow in porous media are established based on the Navier-Stokes equation. The phase-field method is used to track the two-phase interface during the displacement process. Then, the influences of wettability, injection modes, and permeability contrasts on the front length coefficient and the displacement efficiency are studied. The results showed that when the rock surface is water-wet (oil-wet), the polymer displaced the low (high) permeability layer first, and the interlayer breakthrough is obvious in the early stages of displacement. After the front broke through, the water-wet (oil-wet) rocks began to displace the... [more]

Verification Platform of SOC Estimation Algorithm for Lithium-Ion Batteries of Electric Vehicles
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hardware structure, lithium-ion batteries, software system, state of charge, verification platform
As one of the core technologies of electric vehicles (EVs), the state of charge (SOC) estimation algorithm of lithium-ion batteries is directly related to the performance of the battery management system (BMS). Before EVs are put into the market, the SOC estimation algorithm must be tested and verified to ensure the reliability of the BMS and the safe operation of EVs. Therefore, this paper establishes a lithium-ion batteries’ SOC estimation algorithm verification platform for the comprehensive performance evaluation and verification of the new SOC estimation algorithm. In addition, there are two schemes, including real-time SOC estimation verification and offline SOC estimation verification can be selected, which improve the reliability and efficiency of verification. Firstly, the design idea of the verification platform (the research and development purpose, functional requirements, and the overall design scheme) is introduced in detail. March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery, energy management system, fuel cell, hybrid power system, Hydrogen, low emissions, Methanol, photovoltaic cell, telecommunications
In this paper, a hybrid reformed methanol fuel cell−battery system for telecom backup applications was modeled in MATLAB Simulink. The modeling was performed to optimize the operating strategy of the hybrid system using an energy management system with a focus on a longer lifetime and higher fuel efficiency for the fuel cell, while also keeping the state-of-charge (SOC) of the battery within a reasonable range. A 5 kW reformed methanol fuel cell stack and a 6.5 kWh Li-ion battery were considered for the hybrid model. Moreover, to account for the effects of degradation, the model evaluated the performance of the fuel cell both in the beginning of life (BOL) and after 1000 h and 250 start−stop cycling tests (EOT). The energy management system (EMS) was characterized by 12 operating conditions that used the battery SOC, load requirements and the presence or absence of grid power as the inputs to optimize the operating strategy for the system. March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: perovskite cells, SnO2 films, spin-coating, ultrasonic spraying
The SnO2 electron transport layer (ETL) has been characterized as being excellent in optical and electrical properties, ensuring its indispensable role in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this work, SnO2 films were prepared using two approaches, namely, the ultrasonic spraying method and the traditional spin-coating, where the different properties in optical and electrical performance of SnO2 films from two methods were analyzed by UV−Vis, XRD, AFM, and XPS. Results indicate that the optical band gaps of the sprayed and the spin-coated film are 3.83 eV and 3.77 eV, respectively. The sprayed SnO2 film has relatively low surface roughness according to the AFM. XPS spectra show that the sprayed SnO2 film has a higher proportion of Sn2+ and thus corresponds to higher carrier concentration than spin-coated one. Hall effect measurement demonstrates that the carrier concentration of the sprayed film is 1.0 × 1014 cm−3, which is slightly higher than that of the spin-coated film. In addition,... [more]

Keywords: day-ahead market, flexible load, intra-day market, renewable energy sources, solar thermal plants, virtual power plant
In this work, the optimal participation of heterogeneous, Renewable Energy Source (RES)-based Virtual Power Plant (VPP) in Day-Ahead Market (DAM) and Intra-Day Market (IDM) is studied. For this purpose, a detailed model of the RES-based VPP and of the market operation is needed. The VPP includes both dispatchable and non-dispatchable RESs and flexible demand assets. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air stability, doped electrolytes, Li2CO3, solid garnet electrolytes
The cubic garnet Li7La3Zr2O12 (c-LLZO) is one of the most promising solid electrolytes due to its high ionic conductivity and large electrochemical window. However, the critical issue of Li2CO3 formation on the c-LLZO surface when exposed to air is problematic, which is detrimental to the ionic conductivity and storage. Herein, comparative studies were carried out on the air stability of Al-doped Li7La3Zr2O12 (Al-LLZO), Al-Ta-doped Li7La3Zr2O12 (Al-LLZTO), and Al-Nb-doped Li7La3Zr2O12 (Al-LLZNO). It was found that Al-LLZTO and Al-LLZNO are less reactive with air than Al-LLZO. The morphology of Li2CO3 on Al-LLZTO micro-sized powders after air exposure was island-like with ~1.5 μm in thickness. The interfacial resistance of Li/Al-LLZTO was also a factor of ~3 smaller than that of Li/Al-LLZO, leading to the improved cycle stability of Li/Al-LLZTO/Li symmetric cells. SST-Based Grid Reinforcement for Electromobility Integration in Distribution Grids
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: distribution grid power-flow, distribution grid reinforcement, electric vehicle charging stations, solid-state transformers
Electric Vehicles (EVs) are gaining acceptance due to the advantages they offer in the reduction of nitrogen oxide and carbon dioxide emissions. The need for emission reduction and the potential of EVs for these reductions is reflected in the current sustainable mobility policies of the EU as well as the German government. Increasing the penetration of EVs in the grid requires an expansion of EV charging infrastructure, which in turn requires either grid reinforcement or solutions for more efficient use of existing infrastructure to avoid or postpone grid reinforcement. Distribution transformers face increased loading due to EV charging and need to be protected from overloading during peak load periods to ensure continuity of service. Therefore, transformers are one of the components that are upgraded or replaced as a part of grid reinforcement. Flyback Converter Using a D-Mode GaN HEMT Synchronous Rectifier
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: GaN HEMT, normally-on, synchronous rectifier
The flyback converter with its active cell balancing topology for charging lithium-based batteries in Electrical Vehicles (EV) have been adopted recently into the industry. Electrical Vehicle battery charging requires high current operation in continuous current mode and hence, the power loss on the Schottky diode rectifier on the secondary side determines the power conversion efficiency. The depletion mode (D-mode) GaN HEMT synchronous rectifier proposed in this paper has been used to replace the Schottky diode on the secondary side of the flyback converter in order to improve the power conversion efficiency. This synchronous rectifier regulates the forward voltage drop of an external switch to about 100 mV per ampere of current flow with no concern to threshold voltage. The first challenge of converting the D-mode GaN HEMT as a synchronous rectifier is that the normally-on device must be off when the primary side inductor of the flyback converter is initially charging the magnetic en... While the electrification of railway systems is spreading rapidly, it is unlikely that all routes will be electrified as the volume of passengers will not justify the high infrastructure costs. Therefore, it is expected that, for several lines, a combination of hydrogen and electric traction will be used, with the latter partly provided by fixed infrastructure and partly by batteries. Railway traction drives will then need to change to accommodate these new types of power supply. A detailed review of the available traction motors and drives is provided with this review, given application to the new hybrid-electric systems. In particular, permanent magnet synchronous motors with multiphase windings are evaluated in comparison with traditional three-phase machines. Additionally, low and medium-voltage multisource...
