Yunho Kim, Jungha Hwang, Sangmu Bae, Yujin Nam
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: curtain-wall-type liquid-type photovoltaic thermal system (CW-PVT), electrical performance, field study, pipe connection method, thermal performance
Recently, there has been increasing attention on the use of renewable energy in buildings, particularly, the photovoltaic thermal (PVT) system that uses both solar power and thermal energy. However, there is a limit to adopting the PVT system in real buildings because many architects value the aesthetics of buildings or spaces. This study developed a curtain-wall-type liquid-type PVT (CW-PVT) that can be installed on a wall as it integrates with the building. To analyze the system performance, a real-scale experimental plant was established in an outdoor environment. The performance of the CW-PVT unit was verified for two different module pipe connection types: parallel and serial. Meteorological variable data, the inlet and outlet fluid temperatures, surface temperature, and electrical energy generation of the modules were measured and collected using the measurement equipment according to the module pipe connection type. Consequently, the parallel-type method was approximately 10% mo... [more]

Keywords: automated connection device, charging solutions, charging standardization, charging technology roadmap, heavy-duty electric vehicle
This paper presents a pre-normative roadmap that foresees the developments in the charging of heavy-duty electric vehicles (HD-EVs). It supports and facilitates the future standardization efforts of charging technologies by creating an overview of the popularity of charging technologies and the end users’ needs. The required input for the work was collected using a comprehensive investigation on the available charging technologies and their standardization, reviewing the existing roadmaps and research work, and conducting surveys and interviews of end users and technical stakeholders. According to the findings, a pantograph on the roof of a vehicle and plug-based charging are currently the most used charging interfaces. This trend is likely to continue in the future, since (1) pantographs on vehicle roofs, (2) pantographs on infrastructure, and (3) plugs were graded as charging interfaces with the highest potential by the participants of the technical survey. Static and conductive char... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: coupled approach, floating offshore wind turbine, numerical prediction of tower loading, uncoupled approach, wave actions, wind actions
For the design of floating offshore wind turbines (FOWT), all the load cases need to be calculated by using a coupled model of wind turbine and platform, while the uncoupled approach will help to reduce the number of simulations for the design and optimization of floating offshore wind turbines. In this study, the effects of the wind and wave actions on the tower loading of a FOWT were investigated and an uncoupled approach for the load calculation was proposed and verified by comparing with the result of coupled simulation. First, the effect of elastic platform was considered by tuning the Young’s modulus of the tower material when rigid platform model was used in the analysis. The effect of wind and wave actions on the loading of the tower was then investigated. It was found that the difference of the wind load between fixed and floating wind turbines is observed only in the mean component and can be predicted by considering the hydrostatic stiffness of the platform and mooring stiff... Yan Chen, Chenkun Cai, Gaowen Liu
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: blade edge plate, bypass leakage, clearance leakage, equivalent mass flow, gas turbine engine
The loss of cold air from the blade edge plates of the turbine has a negative impact on engine performance and safety. Using an experimental method, this paper investigates the effect of geometric and aerodynamic parameters on cold air leakage through pressure and mass flow measurements. Based on the results, it can be concluded that, with a change in sheet spacing, the proportion of bypass leakage and clearance leakage changes. At the same sheet spacing, the edge plate clearance is increased from 1 mm to 1.1 mm, resulting in a 30% increase of total leakage and a 25.7% increase of leakage equivalent mass flow. The edge plate clearance was increased from 1.1 mm to 1.2 mm, the total leakage increased by 19.2%, and the equivalent mass flow of leakage was 19%. The proportion of clearance leakage in the total leakage increased gradually for a given edge plate clearance. When the sheet spacing was 1 mm, bypass leakage accounted for 68% of the total leakage and was the primary source of leaka... [more]
A Compendium of Formulae for Natural Frequencies of Offshore Wind Turbine Structures
Ramon Varghese, Vikram Pakrashi, Subhamoy Bhattacharya
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: natural frequency, offshore foundation, offshore wind turbine, soil structure interaction, wind energy
The design of an offshore wind turbine system varies with the turbine capacity, water depth, and environmental loads. The natural frequency of the structure, considering foundation flexibility, forms an important factor in structural design, lifetime performance estimates, and cost estimates. Although nonlinear numerical analysis in the time domain is widely used in the offshore industry for detailed design, it becomes necessary for project planners to estimate the natural frequency at an earlier stage and rapidly within reasonable accuracy. This paper presents a compendium of mathematical expressions to compute the natural frequencies of offshore wind turbine (OWT) structures on various foundation types by assimilating analytical solutions for each type of OWT, obtained by a range of authors over the past decade. The calculations presented can be easily made using spreadsheets. Example calculations are also presented where the compiled solutions are compared against publicly available... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cavitating vortices, high-speed visualization, proper orthogonal decomposition (POD), pump–turbine, turbine
The self-oscillation of the cavitating vortices is one of the dangerous phenomena of hydraulic turbine operation near full-load conditions. This work is an attempt to generalize data and expand insight on the phenomenon of self-excited oscillations by comparing the experimental results obtained on a simplified turbine and scaled-down pump−turbine models. In both cases, a series of high-speed imaging was carried out, which made it possible to study these phenomena with high temporal resolution. The high-speed imaging data was subjected to additional processing such as binarization, cropping, and scaling. For a simplified turbine model, the volume of the vapor cavity was calculated based on the assumption of the axial symmetry of the cavity, after which fast Fourier transform (FFT) analysis was carried out. A proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) analysis was also performed to examine individual modes in the original digital imaging data. For the pump−turbine, visualization data on the c... [more]

Keywords: low pressure gas adsorption, low pressure hysteresis, Lower Cambrian shale, pore structure, preservation mechanism, shale gas, tectonic deformation
The Lower Paleozoic marine shale in southern China has undergone several strong tectonic transformations in an extensive region outside the Sichuan Basin. Although some shale strata underwent strong deformation, they still contain a significant amount of shale gas. The gas preservation mechanism in the strongly deformed shale has become the focus of attention. In this paper, the Lower Cambrian gas-bearing shale samples with a strong deformation taken from an exploration well in northern Chongqing, China, were investigated on their pore types and structure, with the aim to reveal the reason for the gas preservation. The pore types of the Lower Cambrian shale are dominated by microfractures and interparticle (interP) pores occurring mainly between clay minerals and between organic matter (OM) and clay minerals, while pores within OM that can be observed by FE-SEM (field emission-scanning electron microscopy) are rare. The shale has a low porosity, with an average of 1.56%, which is mainl... [more]

Keywords: district heating and cooling, economic assessment, emission reduction, energy saving, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the supply chains of traditional fossil fuels. According to a report by the International Energy Agency (IEA) from 2020, oil-refining activity fell by more than the IEA had anticipated. It was also assumed that the demand in 2021 would likely be 2.6 million bpd below the 2019 levels. However, renewable markets have shown strong resilience during the crisis. It was determined that renewables are on track to meet 80% of the growth in electricity demand over the next 10 years and that sustainable energy will act as the primary source of electricity production instead of coal. On the other hand, the report also emphasized that measures for reducing environmental pollution and CO2 emissions are still insufficient and that significant current investments should be further expanded. The Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems (SDEWES) conference series is dedicated to the advancement and dissemination of knowledge... [more]

Keywords: condensation, enhanced heat transfer, enhanced surface, flow patterns
Condensation heat transfer characteristics (using R410A as the working fluid) were studied experimentally to evaluate the heat transfer performance in copper and stainless-steel heat transfer tubes (smooth and enhanced). Experiments were carried out for a mass flux that varied from 250 to 450 kg m−2 s−1, at a saturation temperature of 318 K. Single-phase heat balance verification found that the heat loss is less than 6%, and the deviation between single-phase experimental results and various prediction correlations is less than 15%. Additionally, tube side condensation flow patterns were observed and recorded. Experimental results found that the enhancement ratio of the condensation heat transfer coefficient (enhanced tube/smooth tube) of the three-dimensional surface (1EHT) tube is in the range of 1.15~1.90, while the ratio of the micro-fin (HX) tube is in the range of 1.18~1.80. Heat transfer performance is affected by material conductivity, with the thermal conductivity of the smoot... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: crude oil market, GARCH-MIDAS model, variable selection, volatility forecast
Many macro-level variables have been used in forecasting crude oil price volatility. This article aims to identify which variables have the greatest impact and give more accurate predictions. The GARCH-MIDAS model with variable selection enables us to incorporate many variables in a single model. By combining the log-likelihood function with adaptive lasso penalty, three most informative determinants have been identified, namely, macroeconomic uncertainty, financial uncertainty and default yield spread. Out-of-sample results show that using these three variables significantly improves prediction accuracy compared to baseline models. However, the variables widely studied by other scholars, such as the supply and demand of crude oil, industrial production index, etc., were not selected, indicating that the impact of these variables may be overestimated. When studying crude oil price volatility, macroeconomic and financial market uncertainties can be used as effective predictors for inves... [more]

Keywords: dual-fuel, emission performance, HSR of ports, opposed-piston two-stroke, power performance
Zero carbon emissions will dominate the future of internal combustion engines (ICEs). Existing technology has pushed the performance of ICEs operating on traditional working principles to almost reach their limit. The new generation of ICEs needs to explore new efficient combustion modes. For new combustion modes to simplify the emission after treatment, the opposed-piston, two-stroke (OP2S) diesel engine is a powertrain with great potential value. Combined with dual-fuel technology, the OP2S diesel engine can effectively reduce carbon emissions to achieve clean combustion. Hence, methanol/diesel dual fuel was burnt in the OP2S engine to create a clean combustion mode for future demands. In the present work, a 1D simulation model of an OP2S diesel engine was established and verified. We investigated the influence of port height to stroke ratio (HSR) on power and emission performances of the OP2S diesel engine under different methanol ratios. The results show that the methanol ratio ext... [more]

Keywords: pressure oscillation, rapid compression machine, spontaneous ignition, spray-wall impingement, supersonic reaction front
High altitude and low temperature is the common extreme environment for internal combustion engines. Under such operating conditions, heavy-duty diesel engines often suffer from serious abnormal combustion, such as knocking combustion, which results in piston crown breakdown and cylinder head erosion. Spray-wall impingement and pool fires are considered potential causes; however, the detailed mechanism remains poorly understood owing to the lack of research data. In this study, for the first time, the destructive abnormal combustion induced by diesel spray-wall impingement was identified using an optical rapid compression machine under engine-relevant conditions at high altitudes. Combining instantaneous pressure and temperature measurements with simultaneously recorded high-speed photography gives useful insights into understanding the detailed combustion processes. The experimental results show that depending on the extent of diesel spray-wall impingement, supersonic detonation-like... [more]

Keywords: buildings, carbon capture (CC), carbon capture and storage (CCS), energy systems, GHG emissions, micro-cogeneration, micro-combined heat and power (micro-CHP)
To restrict global warming and relieve climate change, the world economy requires to decarbonize and reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to net-zero by mid-century. Carbon capture and storage (CCS), and carbon capture and utilization (CCU), by which CO2 emissions are captured from sources such as fossil power generation and combustion processes, and further either reused or stored, are recognized worldwide as key technologies for global warming mitigation. This paper provides a review of the latest published literature on small-scale carbon capture (CC) systems as applied in micro combined heat and power cogeneration systems for use in buildings. Previous studies have investigated a variety of small- or micro-scale combined heat and power configurations defined by their prime mover for CC integration. These include the micro gas turbine, the hybrid micro gas turbine and solid-state fuel cell system, and the biomass-fired organic Rankine cycle, all of which have been coupled with a po... [more]
Effect of Blockage Inside Holes on Film Cooling Performance on the Suction Side of a Turbine Guide Vane
Wei Zhang, Rui Zeng, Song Liu, Guangchao Li
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: blockage ratio, blowing ratio, film effectiveness, infrared measurement, thermal barrier coating
In order to study the effect of thermal barrier coating deposition inside the film holes of turbine guide vanes on film cooling performance, film effectiveness on the suction side is measured by infrared thermal imaging technology. Film effectiveness is obtained at blockage ratios of 0, 0.2, 0.5, and 0.8, and blowing ratios of 0.7, 1.05, and 1.4. Film effectiveness decreases and the spanwise inhomogeneity becomes evident with an increase of the blockage ratio. When blowing ratios increase from 0.7 to 1.4, the surface averaged film effectiveness decreases by 55−60% at a large blockage ratio of 0.8, 21−27% at the middle blockage ratio of 0.5 and by no more than 11% at a small blockage ratio of 0.2. The rounded corners formed by blockage enhance the adhesion of the film at the small blockage ratio of 0.2, thereby improving the film cooling performance near the hole exit. There is a maximum increase of 0.2 in film effectiveness within four hole diameters.

Keywords: end-of-life, reliability, survival analysis, transfer learning
Electric vehicles are increasingly becoming the vehicle of choice in today’s environmentally conscious society, and the heart of an electric vehicle is its battery. Today, lithium-ion batteries are mainly used to power electric vehicles for its increased energy storage density and longevity. However, in order to estimate battery life, long and costly battery testing is required. Therefore, there is a need to investigate efficient ways that could reduce the amount of testing required by reusing existing knowledge of aging patterns from different kinds of battery chemistry. This work aims to answer two research questions. The first addresses the challenge of battery cell testing data that contain battery cells that do not reach the End-of-Life (EOL) threshold by the time the testing has been completed. For this challenge, we propose to implement survival analysis that is able to handle incomplete data or what is referred to as censored data. The second addresses how to reuse a model trai... [more]

Keywords: FDS method, insulation of transformers, moisture, oil, oil-impregnated pressboard, transformer diagnostics, transformer temperature
The aim of this study was to perform precision measurements of the frequency-temperature dependences of the loss angle tangent of the liquid-solid composite with the FDS Dirana meter. The composite consisted of heavily moistered oil-impregnated pressboard. The moisturization of the pressboard occurred in a manner as close as possible to the process of wetting the insulation in power transformers to a moisture content of (5.0 ± 0.2) wt. %. This value of moisture content was chosen because exceeding this value can lead to transformer failure. The measuring temperature range was from 293.15 K (20 °C) to 333.15 K (60 °C), with a step of 8 K. The measuring frequency range was 0.0001 Hz to 5000 Hz. It was observed that the shape of the frequency dependence of the loss angle tangent for a moisture content of 5.0 wt. % does not depend on the value of the measuring temperature. An increase in temperature leads to a shift of the waveforms into the higher frequency region. This is associated with... [more]

Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biogas, biomass characteristics, biomethane, silage, willow-leaf sunflower
Renewable energy is becoming a widely discussed topic in the European Union (EU), due to a desire to reduce the negative effects of fossil fuels on climate change and biodiversity. About 60% of the total renewable energy produced in the EU is derived from biomass. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is an important pathway to convert biomass into biogas and then into bioenergy. Helianthus salicifolius is a perennial plant, whose biomass can serve as a co-substrate in biogas plants. Biomass composition, in addition to the biomethane and biogas potential, were investigated in raw green biomass and silage obtained from Helianthus salicifolius plants grown under different types (mineral and organic) and doses (0, 85, 170 kg N ha−1) of nitrogen fertilization. The biomethane production efficiency from Helianthus salicifolius was recorded for 25 days and found to range on average between 169.4 NL kg−1 VS for raw biomass and 193.2 NL kg−1 VS for silage. It follows from the current study that ensiling inc... [more]

Keywords: ethanol admixture, fuel atomization quality, high-pressure injectors, injector deposits, optical measurements of fuel atomization, SI combustion engine
Correct fuel atomization is an important parameter in the process of preparing a combustible mixture. Distortions of the atomization can lead to unfavorable effects in the combustion process. This paper presents an analysis of the fuel atomization characteristics of high-pressure fuel injector tests. Optically tested injectors were previously tested in a 48 h engine test carried out in accordance with the CEC F-113-KC procedure, using alternative fuels with ethanol blends. As a result of engine tests on fuels containing various amounts of ethanol admixture, the injectors became contaminated. The effect of the deposits on the geometric atomization indicators was determined. This paper focuses on analyzing the area of the atomized spray in a constant volume chamber at different parameters, reflecting real operating conditions. We found that the addition of ethanol (20%) increases the observed spray area for all test points. Complementing the quantitative results is a qualitative analysis... [more]

Keywords: bidirectional buck–boost converter, hybrid energy storage system, Li-ion battery, pulsed load, supercapacitor
With greater power density, a hybrid power source that combines supercapacitors and batteries has a wide range of applications in pulse-operated power systems. In this paper, a supercapacitor/battery semi-active hybrid energy storage system (HESS) with a full current-type control strategy is presented. The studied HESS is composed of batteries, supercapacitors, and a bidirectional buck−boost converter. The converter is controlled such that supercapacitors supply load power pulses, and batteries provide the power in steady state. To realize the fast compensation of the supercapacitors to the load power pulses, a power distribution module based on hysteresis control theory is designed in the control system. Moreover, the control strategy does not require the model parameters of the converter and supercapacitors, so the control system is simplified. A complete configuration scheme and cost analysis of the proposed HESS are also presented. Obtained results show that the proposed supercapac... [more]

Keywords: activated coke, adsorption capacity, denitrification, desulfurization, synergistically
SO2 and NOx in flue gas are serious environmental pollutants. As an excellent adsorbent, activated coke has good application potential in flue gas desulfurization and denitrification. In this study, different concentrations of NH3 and K2CO3 solutions were used to modify the activated coke made from biomass and coal, and then separate and coordinated desulfurization and denitrification experiments were carried out. The adsorption efficiency of activated coke and the adsorption capacity of SO2 and NO were compared, and the adsorption relationship between SO2 and NO was clarified. The changes of the surface functional groups of activated coke before and after adsorption and the forms of SO2 and NO after adsorption were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer and X-ray diffractometer patterns. Results show that K2CO3 and NH3 modification can promote the adsorption of SO2 and NO in activated coke, and K2CO3 modification is more significant for improving the denitrification and d... [more]

Keywords: biofuel, cracking, membrane filtration, methanation, olive mill wastewater, Steam Reforming
Olive oil is one excellence of the Italian food industry: around 300 kt yr−1 are produced, creating roughly the same amount of olive mill wastewater (OMW) to be disposed of. The present work describes a process to exploit OMW by converting its organic compounds to valuable gaseous biofuel. A sample OMW was characterized (COD, TOC, solids, and polyphenols) and submitted to membrane filtration tests to concentrate the organic compounds. Based on the results of the experiments, a treatment process was outlined: the retentate streams from microfiltration and ultrafiltration steps were fed to a cracking and a steam reforming reactor, respectively; the obtained syngas streams were then mixed and sent to a methanation reactor. The process was simulated with Aspen Plus (AspenTech©) software, assessing operating conditions and streams compositions: the final biofuel is around 81 mol.% methane, 4 mol.% hydrogen, and 11 mol.% carbon dioxide. The permeate stream cannot be directly disposed of, but... [more]
