Mechanistic Model of an Air Cushion Surge Tank for Hydro Power Plants
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air cushion surge tank (ACST), air friction model, flexible hydro power plants, mechanistic model, OpenHPL
Due to the increasing use of renewable energy sources, and to counter the effects of fossil fuels, renewable dispatchable hydro power can be used for balancing load and generation from intermittent sources (solar and wind). During higher percentage change in load acceptance or rejection in the intermittent grid, the operations of surge tanks are crucial in terms of water mass oscillation and water hammer pressure, and to avoid wear and tear in actuators and other equipment, such as hydro turbines. Surge tanks are broadly classified as open types, with access to open air, and closed types, with a closed volume of pressurized air. Closed surge tanks are considered to have a more flexible operation in terms of suppressing water mass oscillation and water hammer pressure. In this paper, a mechanistic model of an air cushion surge tank (ACST) for hydro power plants is developed based on the ordinary differential equations (ODEs) for mass and momentum balances. The developed mechanistic mode... [more]

Experimental Performance Analysis of Adsorption Modules with Sintered Aluminium Fiber Heat Exchangers and SAPO-34-Water Working Pair for Gas-Driven Heat Pumps: Influence of Evaporator Size, Temperatures, and Half Cycle Times
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adsorption module, fiber heat exchanger, SAPO-34-water working pair
A major challenge for gas-driven adsorption heat pumps is the production of compact, efficient, and cost-effective adsorption modules. We present the experimental data of a design based on sintered aluminum fiber heat exchangers, a technology currently under development. The adsorption module presented here is the result of the downsizing of a larger module. The downsized module has an adsorption heat exchanger that is 60% of the size of the larger-scale component, and an evaporator-condenser that is only 30% of the size of the larger-scale component. It is designed to fit the heating requirements of a wall-hung heat pump for a single-family home. For the first time, a comprehensive experimental study of the influence of half-cycle time, evaporator and adsorption temperature, and driving temperature on the efficiency and power of the module is presented. At temperature conditions relevant for the application of a gas-driven adsorption heat pump, i.e., evaporator temperature < 10 °C and... [more]

Multiobjective Optimization for a Li-Ion Battery and Supercapacitor Hybrid Energy Storage Electric Vehicle
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery, electric vehicle, Genetic Algorithm, hybrid energy storage system, multiobjective optimization, supercapacitor
The acceptance of hybrid energy storage system (HESS) Electric vehicles (EVs) is increasing rapidly because they produce zero emissions and have a higher energy efficiency. Due to the nonlinear and strong coupling relationships between the sizing parameters of the HESS components and the control strategy parameters and EV’s performances, energy consumption rate, running range and HESS cost, how to design the HESS EVs for different preferences is a key problem. How to get the real time performances from the HESS EV is a difficulty. The multiobjective optimization for the HESS EV considering the real time performances and the HESS cost is a solution. A Li-ion battery (BT) semi-active HESS and optimal energy control strategy were proposed for an EV. The multiobjectives include energy consumption over 100 km, acceleration time from 0−100 km per hour, maximum speed, running range and HESS cost of the EV. According to the degrees of impact on the multiobjectives, the scaled factors of BT cap... [more]

Decentral Hydrogen
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combined heat and power devices, flexibility options, hydrogen storage, prosumers
This concept study extends the power-to-gas approach to small combined heat and power devices in buildings that alternately operate fuel cells and electrolysis. While the heat is used to replace existing fossil heaters on-site, the power is either fed into the grid or consumed via heat-coupled electrolysis to balance the grid power at the nearest grid node. In detail, the power demand of Germany is simulated as a snapshot for 2030 with 100% renewable sourcing. The standard load profile is supplemented with additional loads from 100% electric heat pumps, 100% electric cars, and a fully electrified industry. The renewable power is then scaled up to match this demand with historic hourly yield data from 2018/2019. An optimal mix of photovoltaics, wind, biomass and hydropower is calculated in respect to estimated costs in 2030. Hydrogen has recently entered a large number of national energy roadmaps worldwide. However, most of them address the demands of heavy industry and heavy transport,... [more]

Research on Conductivity Damage Based on Response Surface Analysis
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: conductivity damage, hydraulic fracturing, laboratory test, sandstone reservoir
Hydraulic fracturing is an important means of developing unconventional oil and gas layers. The fracture conductivity of tight sandstone reservoirs after fracture is affected by many factors, such as the interaction between the fracturing fluid, water, and rocks; the fracturing materials; and the construction parameters. This paper improves the experimental process of the long-term conductivity test and provides insight into conductivity prediction and optimization based on the response surface test method. The test process is conducted in the following manner: (1) inject nitrogen to evaluate the fracture conductivity before fracturing fluid damage; (2) inject fracturing fluid to simulate shut-in; and (3) inject nitrogen again to evaluate fracture conductivity after the damage ability of the fracturing fluid. The single factor test results show that the lower the sand concentration is, the higher the fracturing fluid viscosity will be, and the longer the fracturing fluid retention time... [more]

Reclaiming Power Potential from Low Temperature Waste Heat by Thermomagnetic Heat Engines
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electromagnetic generator, gadolinium, low temperature waste heat, thermomagnetic heat engines, triboelectric nanogenerator
Thermomagnetic heat engines were designed, constructed, and tested, where numbers of gadolinium (Gd) blocks were used to exploit low temperature waste heat. Gadolinium is a rare earth material whose magnetic property changes with temperature, altering between ferromagnetic and paramagnetic. A motion develops in the thermomagnetic heat engine as Gd blocks are exposed to different temperatures causing changes in their magnetic property. A change in the magnetic property of any Gd block is directly related to the resultant torque driving the thermomagnetic heat engine for power production. Among heat engines studied to date, the cylindrical thermomagnetic heat engine was able to develop a maximum mechanical power of 1.1 W at a temperature difference of 45 °C between hot and cold thermal resources. Furthermore, depending on the effectiveness of an electromagnetic generator (EMG) combined with a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), the electric power output can be notably improved.

Multi-Crack Dynamic Interaction Effect on Oil and Gas Pipeline Weld Joints Based on VCCT
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: crack propagation, dynamic interference effect, magnetic flux leakage method, virtual crack-closure technique
In pipelines for transporting oil and gas, multiple cracks often exist in weld joints. The interaction among the cracks should be considered as it directly affects the life span of the pipeline structures. In the current investigation, based on the fluid−solid magnetic coupling model, the virtual crack-closure technique (VCCT) is applied to systematically study the multi-crack dynamic interaction effect on pipeline welds during the crack propagation process. The results show that the existence of an auxiliary crack accelerates the main crack’s propagation. When the auxiliary crack is nearer to the main crack tip, the enhancement effect of the auxiliary crack on the main crack increases. Further, when the initial length of the auxiliary crack increases, the main crack becomes easier to propagate. Two important parameters, the distance between the two interacting crack tips and the initial size of the auxiliary crack, are studied in detail. Their interference effect on the main crack has... Prediction of the Total Base Number (TBN) of Engine Oil by Means of FTIR Spectroscopy
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: chemometric analysis, engine oil, FTIR, oil condition monitoring, total base number (TBN)
The objective of this study is to develop a statistical model to accurately estimate the total base number (TBN) value of diesel engine oils on the basis of the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. The research sample consisted of oils used in the course of 14,820 km. The samples were collected after each 1000 km and both FTIR and TBN measurements were performed. By applying the measured absorbance values, five statistical models aimed at predicting TBN values were elaborated with the use of the following information: aggregated values of measured absorbance in defined spectral ranges, extremes at wavenumbers, or the surface area of spectral bands related to the vibrations of specific molecular structures. The obtained models may be considered a continuation and an extension of previous studies of this type described in the literature on the subject. The results of the study and the analysis of the obtained data have led to the development of two models with high pr... [more]

Compact Thirteen-Level Inverter for PV Applications
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cascaded structure, module, multilevel inverter, reduced power switches, standing voltage
In renewable energy source applications, multilevel inverters with lower power components have become more popular in recent decades. This work exhibits a novel topology for high-quality output in PV applications, along with low-power switches and isolated dc sources. The core module of the suggested design may create a 13-level output waveform with two unequal voltage source values. The cascaded structure is intended to boost the voltage levels, and the related parameters are obtained analytically. The even and odd levels of voltage can be created natively without the usage of an additional H bridge circuit. Furthermore, the switches, gate driver circuits, dc sources, and standing voltage are fewer in number when compared to other recent topologies. Power losses and cost comparisons are calculated and given in monetary terms. This new research supports the idea that nearest level control (NLC) is used as a modulation scheme in the simulation modeling and experimental validation of the... [more]

A Hybrid Multi-Criteria-Decision-Making Aggregation Method and Geographic Information System for Selecting Optimal Solar Power Plants in Iran
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aggregation method, MCDM, multicriteria decision-making, power plant location, solar energy
Policy-makers should focus on solar energy due to the increasing energy demand and adverse consequences such as global warming. Conflicting criteria influence choosing the most desirable place to construct a Solar Power Plant (SPP). Researchers have popularized multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) methods because of the potential. Although the simultaneous use of several methods increases the robustness and accuracy of the results, existing methods to integrate MCDM methods mainly consider the same weight for all methods and utilize the alternatives ranking for the final comparison. This paper presents a hybrid decision-making framework to determine the best location for SPPs in Iran using a set of criteria extracted from the literature and expert opinions. An initial list of decision-making alternatives is prepared and evaluated using GIS software in terms of criteria. Decision-makers prioritized the identified alternatives using the MCDM methods, including SWARA and different ranking... [more]

A Descriptive Review to Access the Most Suitable Rib’s Configuration of Roughness for the Maximum Performance of Solar Air Heater
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: augmentation, friction factor, Nusselt number, performance, roughness, solar air heater
Solar air heater is considered to be the most popular and widely used solar thermal system. Solar air heater (SAH) can be used in many applications, ranging from domestic to industrial purposes. However, it seems that the viability of SAH is not feasible due to the following two reasons: (i) the low convective heat transfer coefficient at the absorber plate is the reason that causes a low heat transfer rate to the flowing air, and (ii) the high temperature of the absorber plate insists on high heat losses, thus, reducing the thermal efficiency. The convective coefficient can be augmented by placing turbulators/roughness on the absorber plate, which induces turbulence in the flow passage near the absorber plate by disrupting and destabilizing the laminar sublayer. This comprehensive review has been presented to summarize the studies on artificial roughness/turbulators geometries to enhance the heat transfer rate. Various rib configurations (such as grits, grooves, blockages, baffles, wi... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: common depth point method, fluid migration, gas chimneys, gas emission craters, Natural Gas, permafrost thickness, pingos, shallow transient electromagnetic method, taliks, upper part of the section
Most of the developing oil and gas fields in Russia are located in Arctic regions and constructed on permafrost, where recent environmental changes cause multiple hazards for their infrastructure. The blowing-up of pingos, resulting in the formation of gas emission craters, is one of the disastrous processes associated both with these external changes and, likely, with deep sources of hydrocarbons. We traced the channels of fluid migration which link a gas features reservoirs with periglacial phenomena associated with such craters with the set of geophysical methods, including common depth point and shallow transient electromagnetic methods, on an area of a prospected gas field. We found correlated vertical anomalies of acoustic coherence and electrical resistivity associated with gas chimneys in the upper 500−600 m of the section. The thickness of the ice-bonded permafrost acting as a seal for fluids decreased in the chimney zone, forming 25−50 m deep pockets in the permafrost base. T... [more]

The Interaction between In-Cylinder Turbulent Flow and Flame Front Propagation in an Optical SI Engine Measured by High-Speed PIV
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flame front, high-speed PIV, ignition, in-cylinder flow
The relationship between the flow field and flame propagation is essential in determining the dynamics and effects of turbulent flow in an optical SI engine. In this study, high turbulence flow at stable operations was achieved using 12,000 rpm engine speed, 60 kPa absolute intake pressure, 14.7 A/F, and 15 deg. BTDC spark timing. The turbulent flow field and flame propagation interplay were analyzed through the simultaneous high-speed PIV measurements of the in-cylinder flow and flame front propagation under firing conditions. The intensity of the seeder used was optimized by changing the crank angle. Successful simultaneous detection of the flame front and turbulent flow was demonstrated. Strong turbulence was produced at the flame front simultaneously with the flame movement. After ignition timing, the flame accelerated in the unburned region, and a vital turbulence region occurred.

Fast Terminal Synergetic Control of PMVG-Based Wind Energy Conversion System for Enhancing the Power Extraction Efficiency
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fast terminal synergetic control, maximum power extraction, permanent magnet vernier generator, variable-speed wind turbine, wind energy conversion system
This study presents a fast terminal synergetic control (FTSC) scheme to investigate the nonlinear control problem of permanent magnet vernier generator (PMVG)-based variable-speed wind energy conversion systems (WECSs). In wind turbines, better speed tracking and fast dynamic behavior is required to achieve the maximum power extraction. To do this, the FTSC method is firstly proposed to improve the dynamic performance of tracking the speedby, addressing the turbulent wind and uncertainties in the PMVG system, which improves the wind energy extraction efficiency and alleviates mechanical stress over the turbine. Next, the closed-loop FTSC with a macro variable and novel reaching law is presented to enhance the convergence of the speed error signal when it is far from equilibrium in finite time. At this time, the controller’s output is a zero chattering generator torque reference that can operate the system in both below- and above-rated wind conditions, in addition to pitch control. The... Efficient Plasma Technology for the Production of Green Hydrogen from Ethanol and Water
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: discharge, plasma, reforming
This study concerns the production of hydrogen from a mixture of ethanol and water. The process was conducted in plasma generated by a spark discharge. The substrates were introduced in the liquid phase into the reactor. The gaseous products formed in the spark reactor were hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, acetylene, and ethylene. Coke was also produced. The energy efficiency of hydrogen production was 27 mol(H2)/kWh, and it was 36% of the theoretical energy efficiency. The high value of the energy efficiency of hydrogen production was obtained with relatively high ethanol conversion (63%). In the spark discharge, it was possible to conduct the process under conditions in which the ethanol conversion reached 95%. However, this entailed higher energy consumption and reduced the energy efficiency of hydrogen production to 8.8 mol(H2)/kWh. Hydrogen production increased with increasing discharge power and feed stream. However, the hydrogen concentration was very high und... [more]

Direct Participation of Dynamic Virtual Power Plants in Secondary Frequency Control
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Dynamic Virtual Power Plant (DVPP), grid ancillary services, Renewable Energy Sources (RES), Secondary Frequency Control (SFC)
This paper proposes a novel control strategy in which Renewable Energy Sources (RES) considered in a new Dynamic Virtual Power Plant (DVPP) concept directly participate to Secondary Frequency Control (SFC). This allows full participation of these generators to SFC, i.e., in the same manner as classic synchronous generators by fulfilling identical specifications from both control and contractual points of view. An internal real-time redispatch has been proposed to account in DVPP in order to determine the amount of active power injection by each RES unit for the provision of frequency support at the secondary level. The whole control scheme is designed to take into account both rapid and slow dynamics of modern power systems which contain both classic synchronous generators and rapid power electronics for renewable energy sources in which DVPP is supposed to be inserted. The performance of secondary frequency control strategy has been validated through simulation studies on a two-area b... [more]

Defining and Specifying Design Considerations for Distribution Transformers in Large-Scale Solar Photovoltaic Plants
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: distribution transformers, finite element analysis (FEA), harmonics, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar photovoltaic (PV)
In the new era of the renewable energy market in South Africa, there is a knowledge gap in the technical standards relating to distribution transformers, which are exclusively intended to serve in large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) applications. The problem arises from the reality that these transformers are compelled to facilitate an environment with a potentially high risk of an unacceptable level of harmonics and distortion. What manufacturers currently need is a comprehensive transformer specification for DT transformers in PV applications, as the standards currently in use for regular transformers have so far proven to be inadequate. The latter triggers the need for this work to contribute to the advancement of this knowledge gap by mapping a comparative analysis of defining and specifying the design considerations for solar PV transformers. Initially, the computation of the various transformer losses at multifaceted active-part structures under normal conditions by employing the... [more]

A Novel Polarity Correction Method Developed on Cross Correlation Analysis for Downhole Migration-Based Location of Microseismic Events
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cross correlation analysis, hydraulic fracturing, microseismic events, migration-based location, polarity correction
Migration-based approaches depending on waveform stacking are generally used to locate the microseismic events in hydro-fracturing monitoring. A simple waveform stacking with polarity correction normally provides better results than any of the absolute value-based methods. However, the existing polarity estimation method based on cross correlation analysis selects only individual waveform as a reference waveform, which may affect the precision of migration-based methods. Therefore, a novel polarity correction method based on cross correlation analysis is introduced for a migration-based location in order to accurately locate the microseismic events in a borehole system. The proposed method selects all waveforms from one event having high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) as corresponding reference waveforms, instead of only selecting a single high SNR waveform from one target event as the corresponding reference waveform. Compared with the above-mentioned conventional method, this proposed m... [more]

A Comprehensive Analysis of the Risks Associated with the Determination of Biofuels’ Calorific Value by Bomb Calorimetry

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biorefinery, calorific value, calorimetry, CHP, fair pricing, moisture content, repeatability, reproducibility, uncertainty, wood biomass
Two of the most commonly used solid biomass sources for fuel are wood chips and wood pellets. The calorific value and the moisture content of those biofuels determine the efficiency of the CHP and the biorefinery plants. Therefore, with the increased shift towards a biobased economy, the biomass cost and its physical properties must be precisely determined. Most of the current standards are lacking and provide neither enough details about the issues caused by the biomass heterogeneity nor with the variation in experimental practice. Phenomena such as data scattering, poor repeatability and wide uncertainty, are mostly observed during the measurements of the calorific value and the moisture content. To overcome such issues, an interlaboratory comparison between three national metrology institutes using bomb calorimetry has taken place. The comparison helped to identify the root causes behind the poor reproducibility of the wood samples. Factors such as the equilibrium moisture content o... [more]

A Novel Approach to Predict Transformer Temperature Rise under Harmonic Load Current Conditions
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: distribution transformers, hotspot temperature, Solar Photovoltaic
In South Africa, distribution transformers (DTs) facilitating solar photovoltaic applications represent the highest percentage of total ownership cost investment for independent power producers (IPPs). One of the most indispensable variables that regulate DTs’ operational life span is the hotspot temperature. The prevailing analytical approaches designated to guesstimate the transformer thermal necessities were fathered in accordance with the conservative foundation that an electrical transformer is prone to uniform mean daily and monthly peak loads. In order to appropriately puzzle out the transformer thermal necessities, the formation of a more detailed thermal model that operates with real-time contorted cyclic loading, ambient air temperature, and the intrinsic characteristics of the transformer in-service losses is required. In the current work, various regression models are proposed for the modification of the top-oil formula and the hotspot temperature formula in the IEEE loadin... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: 4-tert butylpyridine, dye-sensitized solar cell, ionic liquid, m-MTDATA, solid-state redox mediator
An ionic liquid, 1-methyl-3-propylimidazolium iodide (MPII), was solidified with an organic hole-transporting material, 4,4′,4″-tris[(3-methylphenyl)phenylamino]triphenylamine (m-MTDATA), and the resulting solid-state redox mediator (RM) (m-MTDATA-solidified MPII) was employed in solar devices to realize solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells (sDSSCs). Solar devices with only MPII or m-MTDATA as an RM showed almost 0 mA/cm2 of short-circuit current (Jsc) and thus 0% power conversion efficiency (PCE). However, an sDSSC with the m-MTDATA-solidified MPII exhibited 4.61 mA/cm2 of Jsc and 1.80% PCE. It was found that the increased Jsc and PCE were due to the formation of I3−, which resulted from a reaction between the iodie (I−) of MPII and m-MTDATA cation. Further enhancement in both Jsc (9.43 mA/cm2) and PCE (4.20%) was observed in an sDSSC with 4-tert butylpyridine (TBP) as well as with m-MTDATA-solidified MPII. Keywords: algorithm, Artificial Intelligence, biodiversity, Galapagos Islands, Solar Photovoltaic, sustainable shipping
Maritime passenger transport in the Galapagos Islands−Itabaca Channel is based on boats with combustion engines that consume an annual average of 4200 gallons of fuel and produce about 38 tons of CO2 per year. The operation of the solar catamaran “INER 1” electric propulsion (PV) is a renewable and sustainable model for passenger shipping in the Galapagos Islands. In this regard, the detailed study of the relationship between the variability of solar radiation, the abrupt change of tides due to changes in wind speed and direction, and the increase in tourists, according to dry and wet seasons, cause high energy consumption. The boats must absorb energy from the electrical grid of the islands; this energy is from renewable (solar and wind) and, mostly, of fossil origin so identifying the source of the energy absorbed by the boats is essential. The aim of this study was to select the most influential attributes in the operation of the solar catamaran “INER 1” in the Galapagos Islands. Th... [more]

Electric vehicles (EVs) contain two main power electronics systems, namely, the traction system and the battery charging system, which are not used simultaneously since traction occurs when the EV is travelling and battery charging when the EV is parked. By taking advantage of this interchangeability, a single set of power converters that can perform the functions of both traction and battery charging can be assembled, classified in the literature as integrated battery chargers (IBCs). Several IBC topologies have been proposed in the literature, and the aim of this paper is to present a literature review of IBCs for EVs. In order to better organize the information presented in this paper, the analyzed topologies are divided into classical IBCs, IBCs for switched reluctance machines (SRMs), IBCs with galvanic isolation, IBCs based on multiple traction converters and IBCs based on multiphase machines.
