Private Hospital Energy Performance Benchmarking Using Energy Audit Data: An Italian Case Study
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy audit, Energy Efficiency, EnPIs, health sector
The increased focus on energy efficiency, both at the national and international levels, has fostered the diffusion and development of specific energy consumption benchmarks for most relevant economic sectors. In this context, energy-intensive facilities, such as hospitals and health structures, represent a unique case. Indeed, despite the high energy consumption of these structures, scientific literature lacks the presence of adequate energy performance benchmarks, especially in regard to the European context. Thus, this study aimed at defining energy benchmark indicators for the Italian private healthcare sector using data collected from the Italian mandatory energy audits according to Art.8 EU Directive 27/2012. The benchmark indicators’ definition was made using a methodology proposed by the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA). This methodology provided the calculation of specific energy performance indicators (EnPIs) by... [more]

Electric Vehicles: V2G for Rapid, Safe, and Green EV Penetration
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery electric vehicle (BEV), electric vehicle (EV), EV charging, plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), power grid, renewable energy source (RES), vehicle-to-grid (V2G)
Low carbon and renewable energy sources (RESs) are fast becoming a key sustainable instrument in meeting the global growth of electricity demand while curbing carbon emissions. For example, the gradual displacement of fossil-fuelled vehicles with electrically driven counterparts will inevitably increase both the power grid baseload and peak demand. In many developed countries, the electrification process of the transport sector has already started in tandem with the installation of multi-GW renewable energy capacity, particularly wind and solar, huge investment in power storage technology, and end-user energy demand management. The expansion of the Electric Vehicle (EV) market presents a new opportunity to create a cleaner and transformative new energy carrier. For instance, a managed EV battery charging and discharging profile in conjunction with the national grid, known as the Vehicle-to-Grid system (V2G), is projected to be an important mechanism in reducing the impact of renewable... Modeling of the Off-Grid PV-Wind-Battery System Regarding Value of Loss of Load Probability
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
The paper presents an optimized off-grid photovoltaic (PV)-wind battery model that considers the value of loss of load probability (LOLP). The optimum combination of all model components: wind turbines, PV panels, batteries and electrical load for the City of Osijek using MATLAB software is defined. The examined data are based on measured load values for the residential home. For values of LOLP in the range from 0.00 to 0.10 in steps of 0.01, optimal size of the presented system has been determined. In order to determine the optimal model, investment costs were taken into account in comparison with various LOLP values.

Constant Phase Element in the Time Domain: The Problem of Initialization
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: constant phase element (CPE), fractional calculus, initial conditions, supercapacitor and battery modeling, time domain, ZARC
The constant phase element (CPE) is found in most battery and supercapacitor equivalent circuit models proposed to interpret data in the frequency domain. When these models are used in the time domain, the initial conditions in the fractional differential equations must be correctly imposed. The initial state problem remains controversial and has been analyzed by various authors in the last two decades. This article attempts to clarify this problem by proposing a procedure to prepare the initial state and defining a decay function that reveals the effect of the initial state in several illustrative examples. This decay function depends on the previous history, which is reflected in the time needed to prepare the initial state and on the current profile assumed for this purpose. This effect of the initial state is difficult to separate and can lead to the misinterpretation of the CPE parameter values.

The Impact of Hydrogen Admixture into Natural Gas on Residential and Commercial Gas Appliances
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: admixture, appliance technology, blend, combustion, decarbonisation, emissions, H2NG, Hydrogen, pollutants, power-to-gas
Hydrogen as a carbon-free fuel is commonly expected to play a major role in future energy supply, e.g., as an admixture gas in natural gas grids. Which impacts on residential and commercial gas appliances can be expected due to the significantly different physical and chemical properties of hydrogen-enriched natural gas? This paper analyses and discusses blends of hydrogen and natural gas from the perspective of combustion science. The admixture of hydrogen into natural gas changes the properties of the fuel gas. Depending on the combustion system, burner design and other boundary conditions, these changes may cause higher combustion temperatures and laminar combustion velocities, while changing flame positions and shapes are also to be expected. For appliances that are designed for natural gas, these effects may cause risk of flashback, reduced operational safety, material deterioration, higher nitrogen oxides emissions (NOx), and efficiency losses. Theoretical considerations and firs... [more]

An Effective Numerical Simulation Method for Steam Injection Assisted In Situ Recovery of Oil Shale
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: finite volume method, nonlinear solver, numerical simulation, oil shale, steam injection
This paper presents an effective numerical simulation method for production prediction of in situ recovery of oil shale reservoirs with steam injection. In this method, finite volume-based discretization schemes of heat and mass transfer equations of the thermal compositional model are derived and used. The embedded discrete fracture model is used to accurately handle the fractured vertical well. A smooth non-linear solver is proposed to solve the global equations, then cell pressure, temperature, saturation, component mole fractions, and well production rates can be obtained. Compared with the existing commercial software, this new method can have a smoother non-linear solution and handle the complex fracture geometry theoretically. A numerical example is used to test this presented method and can realize accurate calculation results compared with CMG. Another numerical case with a hydraulic fracture and an open thermal boundary condition is implemented to validate the presented metho... [more]

Power Flows and Losses Calculation in Radial Networks by Representing the Network Topology in the Hierarchical Structure Form
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: algorithm, directed graph, distribution electric networks, electricity losses, load, structured hierarchical-multilevel approach, transformer
This paper proposes a structured hierarchical-multilevel approach to calculating the power flows and losses of electricity in radial electrical networks with different nominal voltages at given loads and voltages of the power source. The researched electrical networks are characterized by high dimensionality, dynamism of development, but also insufficient completeness and reliability of state information. The approach is based on the representation of the initial network graph in the form of a hierarchical-multilevel structure, divided into two stages with rated voltages Unom≤35 kV and Unom≥35 kV, and using the traditional (manual) engineering two-stage method, where the calculation is performed in a sequence from bottom to top (stage 1) and from top to bottom (stage 2), moving along the structure of the network. The application of the above approach makes it possible to obtain an algorithm for implementation on a computer, which is characterized by universality (for an arbitrary confi... [more]

Does the Real Estate Market and Renewable Energy Induce Carbon Dioxide Emissions? Novel Evidence from Turkey
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
In the literature, the linkage between income, energy, and carbon emissions has been widely examined and most of the empirical studies have not investigated the impact of the real estate market on their empirical models. Our study endeavors to present a novel topic by investigating the influence of the real estate market on Turkey’s environmental quality, using an advanced method of the Bootstrap Autoregressive Distributed Lag (BARDL). We estimate that consumption of renewable energy contributes significantly to CO2 emissions, while real income increases the environmental degradation in both the short and long run. Furthermore, our study demonstrates that the real estate market contributes negatively to the deduction of carbon emissions in Turkey. A one percent increase in the real estate market will cause a rise in Turkey’s carbon level by 0.010% and 0.009% in the short and long term, respectively. Our research suggests that Turkey should design new strategies for sustainable real est... [more]

With the improvement of China’s economic strength, the energy consumption of public buildings is continually increasing, notably for hotels. The energy consumptin of a hotel accounts for more than 15% of its revenue, and the average energy consumption per floor area is more than 10 times that of urban residents. Therefore, the energy-saving retrofit of existing hotels is imperative. This study investigates the economic evaluation methods for existing hotel retrofit projects, and constructs an economic evaluation model using economic evaluation and cost-effectiveness ratio as the base. The energy-saving retrofit measures of 15 existing hotels in Jiangsu Province, China, are used as a case study to demonstrate the research framework. The results indicate that the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system, monitoring system, lighting system, domestic hot water system, and building envelope system are the five energy-saving retrofit technical measures with the highest applica... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Acacia Nilotica, air gasification, equivalence ratio, gas turbine, regenerative, Syngas
The results show that Wood Chips of Acacia Nilotica trees available in Sudan lands can be successfully used in the gasification process and, on the same basis, as a bio-renewable energy resource. Simulation models were used to characterize the air gasification process integrated with a Regenerative Gas Turbine Unit. The results revealed that at a moisture content of 12%, gasification temperature of 1500 K, pressure of 20 bar, and air-like gasification medium, the biomass gasifier’s flow rate is higher at higher syngas rates. The results verified that there is an optimum ER for each syngas rate, in which the slow growth of the ER revealed the maximum gasifier biomass flow rate. For ER growth at lower levels, the specific fuel consumption (SFC) of the RGT Unit declines sharply from the maximum value reached at 0.27 kg/kW·h at an ER of 5% to the minimum value reached at 0.80 kg/kW·h at an ER of 25% for the lowest gasification temperature of 1000 K. Carbon Black/Polyvinylidene Fluoride Nanocomposite Membranes for Direct Solar Distillation
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: carbon black, direct solar membrane distillation, photothermal, PVDF, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Water reclamation is becoming a growing need, in particular in developing countries where harvesting the required energy can be a challenging problem. In this context, exploiting solar energy in a specifically tailored membrane distillation (MD) process can be a viable solution. Traditional MD guarantees a complete retention of non-volatile compounds and does not require high feed water temperatures. In this work, a suitable amount of carbon black (CB) was incorporated into the whole matrix of a polymeric porous membrane in order to absorb light and directly heat the feed. The mixed matrix membranes were prepared forming a uniform CB dispersion in the PVDF dope solution and then using a non-solvent induced phase separation process, which is a well-established technique for membrane manufacturing. CB addition was found to be beneficial on both the membrane structure, as it increased the pore size and porosity, and on the photothermal properties of the matrix. In fact, temperatures as hi... Optimization of Active Power Losses in Smart Grids Using Photovoltaic Power Plants
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: active power losses, enumerative method, renewable energy sources, self-organizing migrating algorithm, smart grids
This article addresses the reduction of power losses in smart grids. Two optimization algorithms are used in this article. The first method is the enumerative method. The second method of the optimization calculation is based on the self-organizing migrating algorithm. In the first step, the network parameters are calculated based on the input data, and then the target function is determined. In this article, the target function is used to reduce the active power losses that occur during the operation of an electric network. More specifically, we attempt to determine the reactive power with the enumerative and SOMA algorithms to reduce the value of the active power losses. This article intends to illustrate the differences between the selected optimization algorithms. As observed, the optimization algorithm determines the computation time.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electromobility, energy consumption, fuel cell, HEV, hybrid drive, optimization process
This paper presents a new Fuel Cell Fuel Consumption Minimization Strategy (FCFCMS) for Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) powered by a fuel cell and an energy storage system, in order to minimize as much as possible the consumption of hydrogen while maintaining the State Of Charge (SOC) of the battery. Compared to existing Energy Management Strategies (EMSs) (such as the well-known State Machine Strategy (SMC), Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC), Frequency Decoupling and FLC (FDFLC), and the Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy (ECMS)), the proposed strategy increases the overall vehicle energy efficiency and, therefore, minimizes the total hydrogen consumption while respecting the constraints of each energy and power element. A model of a hybrid vehicle has been built using the TruckMaker/MATLAB software. Using the Urban Dynamometer Driving Schedule (UDDS), which includes several stops and accelerations, the performance of the proposed strategy has been compared with these different appr... [more]

Economic Effects of Micro- and Mini-Distributed Photovoltaic Generation for the Brazilian Distribution System
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Brazilian regulatory system, distributed generation, economic effects, grid connection, incentive regulation, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar energy
The micro- and mini-distributed generation (MMDG) has significantly increased after the normative resolution No. 482/2012 in Brazil; the installed capacity surpassed 7 GW in 2021. In the international context, a similar event was observed, whose process generated a cross-subsidy for other consumers, in addition to other problems that affect the economic balance of concessionaires. To mitigate this issue, the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) is in the process of revising current rules. Thus, this study estimates the weight of this decision, through a methodology adapted from international assessment models, based on information from the Brazilian regulatory system. In order to achieve it, this paper presents metrics to define the potential market MMDG, based on the consumption patterns of consumers. Then, through time series analysis, the MMDG demand curve is estimated under two scenarios up to 2030. Finally, the economic impact on tariff adjustments and revisions, and their effe... [more]

Experimental Studies of Low-Load Limit in a Stoichiometric Micro-Pilot Diesel Natural Gas Engine
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: high-efficiency engine, low load, micro-pilot diesel, Natural Gas, stoichiometric operation
While operating at light loads, diesel pilot-ignited natural gas engines with lean premixed natural gas suffer from poor combustion efficiency and high methane emissions. This work investigates the limits of low-load operation for a micro-pilot diesel natural gas engine that uses a stoichiometric mixture to enable methane and nitrogen oxide emission control. By optimizing engine hardware, operating conditions, and injection strategies, this study focused on defining the lowest achievable load while maintaining a stoichiometric equivalence ratio and with acceptable combustion stability. A multi-cylinder diesel 6.7 L engine was converted to run natural gas premix with a maximum diesel micro-pilot contribution of 10%. With a base diesel compression ratio of 17.3:1, the intake manifold pressure limit was 80 kPa(absolute). At a reduced compression ratio of 15:1, this limit increased to 85 kPa, raising the minimum stable load. Retarding the combustion phasing, typically used in spark-ignitio... [more]

Battery Sizing Optimization in Power Smoothing Applications
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery management system, battery sizing, power smoothing, swarm optimization
The main objective of this work was to determine the worth of installing an electrical battery in order to reduce peak power consumption. The importance of this question resides in the expensive terms of energy bills when using the maximum power level. If maximum power consumption decreases, it affects not only the revenues of maximum power level bills, but also results in important reductions at the source of the power. This way, the power of the transformer decreases, and other electrical elements can be removed from electrical installations. The authors studied the Spanish electrical system, and a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm was used to model battery sizing in peak power smoothing applications for an electrical consumption point. This study proves that, despite not being entirely profitable at present due to current kWh prices, implanting a battery will definitely be an option to consider in the future when these prices come down.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coolant, cooling effect, electric vehicle, in-wheel motor, water channel
Designing an effective cooling system for high-power-density in-wheel motors of electric vehicles is required to avoid the irreversible demagnetization of the permanent magnet due to a rise in its temperature. In this study, a water-cooling channel was used between the stator and housing to evaluate the cooling performance of a 25 kW in-wheel motor utilizing the commercially available software Ansys Fluent 19.2. Initially, cooling channels with a single or pair of vortex generators have been used with varying heights for pressure drop evaluation considering the allowable pressure drop of 0.7 bar for a water pump. The results indicates that both a single and a pair of vortex generators satisfy the limit of a pressure drop at the height of 4 and 3 mm, respectively, and the cooling performances of two vortex generators were evaluated at these heights. It has been found that the cooling performance of a permanent magnet is enhanced by 4.1% and 6.5% using a single and a pair of vortex gener... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: characteristic strength, geothermal energy development, granite, mud acid solution, particle flow code
Most of the discovered high-temperature geothermal energy systems are often related with granite that is characterized by natural faults, fractures and cracks of different size. However, the porosity and permeability of the granite matrix is very low, greatly limiting the efficiency of heat extraction in granitic rock. Chemical stimulation, which is regarded as one of the most important means of reservoir stimulation, has consequently received more and more attention. In this paper, a Triassic granite obtained from the eastern region of Liaoning Province in China was reacted with three different concentration of mud acid solution (8% HCl + 1% HF, 10% HCl + 2% HF, 12% HCl + 3% HF) and the resulting microstructure changes studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The experimental results show that the number of micropores in the granite increases after chemical corrosion by mud acid solution. A higher mud acid solution concentration results in a... [more]

Laboratory Studies on Permeability of Coals Using Briquettes: Understanding Underground Storage of CO2
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bituminous coal, CO2 sequestration, coal briquette, permeability
The work presents the laboratory studies on permeability of two bituminous coal briquettes under confining pressure conditions. The research was carried out in order to assess the possibility of using bituminous coal as a sorbent for CO2 storage in underground seams. Coal permeability tests were carried out on an original apparatus for testing seepage processes under isobaric conditions on samples subjected to confining pressure. In order to determine the impact of the load on the coal briquettes’ permeability, the tests were carried out at four confining pressures: 1.5, 10, 20 and 30 MPa. The obtained results showed that the coal permeability decreases with an increase in confining pressure. At depths below 250 m, the coal can be a rock poorly permeable to CO2, and under such conditions, the applicability of technologies related to the underground storage of CO2 to coal seams is limited or even impossible.

Keywords: fuzzy theory, MCDM model, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, spherical fuzzy sets, wind turbine supplier selection
The Vietnamese government has decided to use and promote the development of more renewable energy sources, particularly wind energy. When implementing a wind energy project, choosing a wind turbine supplier is an important decision and investors must find the optimal supplier through evaluating many qualitative and quantitative criteria that affect each other symmetrically. Therefore, the process used for selecting a wind turbine supplier in wind power projects is a multi-criteria decision-making process. Many approaches have been applied for this decision process, some of which are based on multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) methods, whether applied individually or in combination with other MCDM models. In this study, the researchers proposed a decision-making model based on spherical fuzzy sets for wind turbine supplier selection in wind power energy projects. In this paper, Vietnam is used as a case study. The recommended turbine suppliers for installations can finally be generate... [more]
