March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active power, anomaly detection, change point detection, cosine similarity, high proportional renewable power system, maximum information coefficient
With the rapid development of wind and photovoltaic power generation, hydro-turbine generator units have to operate in a challenging way, resulting in obvious vibration problems. Because of the significant impact of vibration on safety and economical operation, it is of great significance to study the causal relationship between vibration and other variables. The complexity of the hydro-turbine generator unit makes it difficult to analyze the causality of the mechanism. This paper studied the correlation based on a data-driven method, then transformed the correlation into causality based on the mechanism. In terms of correlation, traditional research only judges whether there is a correlation between all data. When the data with correlation are interfered with by the data without correlation, the traditional methods cannot accurately identify the correlation. A piecewise correlation method based on change point detection was proposed to fill this research gap. The proposed method segme... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: entropy generation, magnetic field, mixed convection, porous medium, viscous dissipation
Various industrial operations involve frequent heating and cooling of electrical systems. In such circumstances, the development of relevant thermal devices is of extreme importance. During the development of thermal devices, the second law of thermodynamics plays an important role by means of entropy generation. Entropy generation should be reduced significantly for the efficient performance of the devices. The current paper reports an analytical study on micropolar fluid with entropy generation over a stretching surface. The influence of various physical parameters on velocity profile, microrotation profile, and temperature profile is investigated graphically. The impact of thermal radiation, porous medium, magnetic field, and viscous dissipation are also analyzed. Moreover, entropy generation and Bejan number are also illustrated graphically. Furthermore, the governing equations are solved by using HAM and code in MATHEMATICA software. It is concluded from this study that velocity a... [more]

Keywords: aligned Ti3C2Tx aerogel, power density, rate performance, sub-zero-temperature stability, supercapacitor
Ti3C2Tx-based aerogels have attracted widespread attention for three-dimensional porous structures, which are promising to realize high-rate energy storage. However, disordered Ti3C2Tx aerogels with highly tortuous porosity fabricated by conventional unidirectional freeze-casting substantially increase ion diffusion lengths and hinder electrolyte ions transport. Herein we demonstrate a new bidirectional ice-templated approach to synthesize porous ordered Ti3C2Tx aerogel with straight and aligned channels, straight and short ion diffusion pathways, leading to better ion accessibility. The aligned Ti3C2Tx aerogel exhibits the high specific capacitance of 345 F g−1 at 20 mV s−1 and rate capability of 52.2% from 10 to 5000 mV s−1. The specific capacitance is insensitive of mass loadings even at 10 mg cm−2 and an excellent power density of 137.3 mW cm−2 is obtained in symmetric supercapacitors. The electrochemical properties of Ti3C2Tx aerogel supercapacitors at sub-zero (to −30 °C) tempera... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: driving test, emissions production, exhaust gas analyzer, exhaust gases, petrol, RDE—real driving emission, vehicle
The aim of this study was to compare and evaluate the production of exhaust emissions from a vehicle with a petrol engine with the Euro 4 emission standard and powered by petrol and LPG (liquefied petroleum gas). The paper presents new possibilities for monitoring exhaust emissions using an exhaust gas analyzer. At the same time, it points out the topicality and significance of the issue in the monitored area. It examines the impact of a change in fuel on emissions. This change is monitored in various areas of vehicle operation. Measurements were performed during real operation, which means that the results are fully usable and applicable in practice. The driving simulation as well as the test conditions correspond to the RDE (Real Driving Emissions) test standard. A commercially available car was first selected to perform the tests, which was first measured in the original configuration (petrol drive). Based on real-time RDE driving tests, it is possible to determine the number of exh... [more]

Pengpeng Wang, Yaodong Jiang, Qingshan Ren
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deep mining, high water pressure, mining disturbance, water inrush prevention, Xingdong coal mine
Water inrush disasters from the coal seam floor occur frequently due to the high water pressure of the Ordovician limestone aquifer, multiple aquifers and strong mining disturbance. We presented a model of water-resisting key strata (WRKS) to investigate the mechanism of floor water inrush from multiple aquifers in deep coal mines. Roof hydraulic fracturing (RHF) for controlling floor water inrush and multi-parameter monitoring were proposed and validated in the Xingdong coal mine in Xingtai, Hebei Province. The results indicated that the periodic weighting step of the test working face after RHF was 9.53 m, which was 61.42% less than that of the working face without RHF (24.7 m). The floor failure depth was 30 m, which was 34.4% less than that of the zones without RHF (45.7 m). Hydraulic fracturing weakened the strength of the overlying strata to control the weighting step and reduce the mining disturbance stress, and the stability of the floor WRKS was enhanced, thereby preventing wa... March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: downhole heating technology, in situ conversion, oil shale, unconventional oil and gas resources
The hot exhaust gas generated by a downhole combustion heater directly heats the formation, which can avoid the heat loss caused by the injection of high-temperature fluid on the ground. However, if the temperature of the exhaust gas is too high, it may lead to the carbonization of organic matter in the formation, which is not conducive to oil production. This paper proposes the use of low-temperature catalytic combustion of a mixture of methane and air to produce a suitable exhaust gas temperature. The simulation studies the influence of different parameters on the catalytic combustion characteristics of methane and the influence of downhole high-pressure conditions. The results show that under high-pressure conditions, using a smaller concentration of methane (4%) for catalytic combustion can obtain a higher conversion efficiency (88.75%), and the exhaust temperature is 1097 K. It is found that the high-pressure conditions in the well can promote the catalytic combustion process of t... [more]
A Study on the Effect of Inlet Air Pollution on the Engine Component Wear and Operation
Tadeusz Dziubak, Sebastian Dominik Dziubak
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: air pollution, engine component wear, internal combustion engines, mechanical engineering, power loss
This paper systematically reviews the research progress in the field of the influence of air pollutants in the engine inlet on the accelerated wear of the elements of the association: piston, piston rings, cylinder liner (P-PR-CL), and plain bearing (journal−panel). It was shown at the outset that the primary component of air pollution is road dust. Its main components are dust grains of hard minerals (SiO2, Al2O3), which penetrate the oil film area between two frictionally mating surfaces causing their abrasive wear. Therefore, the effect of three dust parameters (grain size and hardness, and dust concentration in air) on the accelerated wear of the friction pair: piston, piston rings, cylinder liner(P-PR-CL), and plain bearing (journal−pan) is presented extensively. It was noted that the wear values of the same component were obtained by different researchers using different testing techniques and evaluated by different indices. It has been shown that the greatest wear of two frictio... [more]

Keywords: 3D pattern, catalyst layer, inkjet printing, polymer electrolyte fuel cells, structure design
Optimization of the structure of cathode catalyst layers (CCLs) for promoting the transfer of reactants and products in polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) is important for improving the cell performance. In this study, using theoretical equations, we confirmed that the shortened proton conduction path in the ionomer layer (IL) with a 3D-patterned structure, compared to that in the IL with a flat-patterned structure, can improve the cell performance. We experimentally investigated the effect of the IL with a 3D-patterned structure included in the CCLs on the cell performance. Based on the combination of the flat- or 3D-pattern of the IL and the catalyst layer (CL), the samples were categorized as Str. 1 (3D-patterned CL without IL), Str. 2 (flat-patterned IL and CL), Str. 3 (3D-patterned IL and flat-patterned CL), and Str. 4 (3D-patterned IL and CL). All of the samples had different morphologies. According to the I−V curves and impedance spectra data acquired at 80 °C and 40% relati... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: enhanced oil recovery, interfacial tension, nonionic–anionic surfactant, petroleum sulfonate, synergistic effect
Nonionic−anionic surfactants are expected to be applied in chemical flooding due to their important properties such as ultralow IFT values, good salt tolerance, and no chromatographic separation in porous media. In this study, a new type of nonionic−anionic−hydrophobic group structure surfactant N, N-dihydroxyethylalkylamide carboxylate (EAMC) was synthesized. The synergistic effects between petroleum sulfonate (KPS) and EAMC in reducing interfacial tension (IFT) and emulsification properties were studied. The influences of salt, alkali and Ca2+ on the IFTs of surfactant solutions were also investigated. One-dimensional core flooding experiments were used to characterize the enhanced oil recovery capability of the KPS and EAMC mixed system. The experimental results show that both EAMC and KPS have high interfacial activity and can reduce IFTs to about 0.01 mN/m order of magnitude against decane at optimized concentrations. The area occupied by the hydrophilic group of EAMC on the inter... [more]

Keywords: hydraulic turbines, hydropower, lifetime assessment, multilevel procedure
Part I of the publication series addressed the fundamentals of lifetime assessment of prototype Francis turbines. This paper (Part II) focuses on the numerical part of the procedure. The essential steps and requirements shall be presented (background). The starting points for the numerical considerations are the pressure fields of the transient CFD simulations, which are exported per time step and applied to the existing structure via a fluid−structure interaction. That enables a transient mechanical stress calculation to be conducted, resulting in the fatigue analysis of the component to estimate the remaining lifetime. The individual model requirements should be represented accordingly and applied to the prototype facility (method). The results obtained from this application should be discussed and evaluated. It has to be mentioned that the validation of the numerical results will be performed at Part IV of this publication series (results). The present paper will end up discussing t... [more]

Keywords: battery, fuel cell, solar cell, supercapacitor, thermoelectricity, two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride
The prominence of two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride (2D h-BN) nanomaterials in the energy industry has recently grown rapidly due to their broad applications in newly developed energy systems. This was necessitated as a response to the demand for mechanically and chemically stable platforms with superior thermal conductivity for incorporation in next-generation energy devices. Conventionally, the electrical insulation and surface inertness of 2D h-BN limited their large integration in the energy industry. However, progress on surface modification, doping, tailoring the edge chemistry, and hybridization with other nanomaterials paved the way to go beyond those conventional characteristics. The current application range, from various energy conversion methods (e.g., thermoelectrics) to energy storage (e.g., batteries), demonstrates the versatility of 2D h-BN nanomaterials for the future energy industry. In this review, the most recent research breakthroughs on 2D h-BN nanomaterials... [more]
Partial Power Processing and Efficiency Analysis of dc-dc Differential Converters
Jéssika Melo de Andrade, Roberto Francisco Coelho, Telles Brunelli Lazzarin
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: differential converters, high gain dc-dc converters, non-isolated converters, partial power processing, step-up converters
This paper presents a partial power processing and an efficiency analysis of dc-dc differential converters based on the use of two basic converters of the same group: the positive or negative group. The paper contributes theoretical analysis and demonstrates that the differential converters based on the positive group process has more power than the load requires, and that the differential converters based on the negative group process has less power than the load needs. This is an important advantage of the negative group converters, since a parcel of the output power is directly transferred by the input source to the load, resulting in partial power processing. In order to verify the theoretical analysis herein developed, ten prototypes are evaluated considering an input voltage of 20 V and output power of 100 W.

Keywords: atmospheric stability, energy production, offshore wind turbines, Richardson’s number, sea surface roughness, similarity theory, wind energy
A reliable estimate of the wind potential in the marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL) is of great importance to justify the energetic viability of new offshore wind farms. The purpose of the study is to provide an additional tool for the prediction of the energy that a wind turbine would produces in the open sea from the usual way of measurements at sea, that is, when they are carried out with measuring masts, where the meteorological data are obtained at levels much lower than those of a wind turbine hub. For this, the variation in the wind speed with the height in the MABL is determined, based on the Monin−Obukhov similarity theory, according to the boundary conditions of the air−sea interface, where the input data for the Validation of the results are extracted from the German FINO 3 research platform during the years 2016, 2017, and 2018. It is applied to the production of electrical energy from a 6.0 MW commercial wind turbine, with the hub at 100 m above the sea surface. As a... [more]

Keywords: borehole heat exchanger, borehole thermal resistance, geoenergetics, geothermal heat, geothermal heat pump, thermal response test
Investigating the constructions of borehole heat exchangers with high efficiency (unit heat transfer between the heat carrier and ground) is important. One of the means to improve efficiency is the use of the most efficient construction of the borehole heat exchanger. The paper describes research on borehole heat exchangers’ thermal efficiency, which is mainly characterized by parameters obtained from a thermal response test: effective thermal conductivity and borehole thermal resistivity. The borehole heat exchangers of the Laboratory of Geoenergetics in Poland were studied. Based on thermal response test interpretation and empirical equations, one of which is proprietary, the heat transfer is calculated independent of the duration of the thermal response test. Other conditions for using borehole heat exchangers in downtowns are discussed. The research aims to determine the best borehole heat exchanger design from five basic possibilities studied. A lack of unequivocal statements rega... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hydraulic turbines, hydropower, lifetime assessment, multilevel procedure
Electricity generation is becoming increasingly flexible in Europe these days. Due to the integration of new renewable energy sources like wind and photovoltaic, other conventional resources, such as hydropower, operate within a brought range around their best efficiency point, thus leading to higher dynamical loads at the water-bearing parts, especially at the runner and the guide vanes (background). By scrutinizing the literature of the past years, one could summarize the outcome in that way, that research projects focused either on model measurements with higher visual accessibility or, less often, on prototype measurements in existing power plants. Today prototype measurements are performed, if possible, to eliminate scaling effects. Moreover, increasing computing power allows prototype simulations to be carried out within a reasonable time. At the acknowledged research projects, prototype and model measurements and numerical simulations have been performed to identify the main gap... [more]

Keywords: HVAC, HVDC, power flow, RES, SCR, stability analysis, transmission line
The increasing use of renewable energy sources (RES) and their integration into transmission systems requires extensive studies to get more benefits from these sources. Stability analysis is one of the most crucial issues in these systems, and therefore needs to be studied in depth. In this paper, an analytical study was conducted for the stability assessment of the Iraqi super grid after adding a solar power plant with a capacity of 1000 MW using both HVAC and HVDC links for comparison purposes. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the best way to integrate RES into the power grid while improving its performance. The system’s stability was evaluated for two types of faults: line and bus disturbances. The strength of the grid and its ability to absorb the newly added energy was also studied. The simulations were performed with the PSS/E software using the Newton-Raphson method for a 500 km transmission line length. The results showed that the HVDC link outperforms the HVA... [more]

Keywords: explosion-suppression, gas explosion, high-temperature heat pipe, metal foam, propagation rule
The hazards caused by gas explosion are mainly due to high temperatures and shock waves. It is of great practical significance to explore a device that can restrain these two hazards at the same time. Through the establishment of the gas explosion calculation model, a numerical analysis of the flame propagation in the three types of pipelines, including the empty pipe, the single metal foam pipe, and the high-temperature heat pipe metal foam composite structure, was carried out. The numerical results are compared with the relevant experimental results. The accuracy, rationality, and accuracy of the calculation model is verified. The research results show that that the gas explosion flame propagation develops fastest and accelerates in the empty pipe, followed by a single metal foam pipe. The gas explosion flame in the pipe with the high-temperature heat pipe metal foam composite structure develops the slowest. The composite structure composed of the high-temperature heat pipe and metal... [more]

Keywords: high-frequency integrated circuits, high-performance processors, optimal temperature regulation, Peltier pumps, power circuits, power devices, power electronics, power minimisation, solid-state electronics, thermal networks
A thermal network will be presented to model a multi-layer structure consisting of a semiconductor structure, integrated Peltier heat pump and a cooling fin. A criterion will be set up to determine the optimal Peltier current to minimise the chip temperature using the power dissipation as the control parameter. Compared with classical methods, the proposed solution does not show any time delays in response to power changes and is not sensitive to the position of chip temperature sensors. It does not generate chip temperature oscillations. The idea can be applied in each integrated circuit cooled with Peltier heat pumps, e.g., power devices, high-performance processors, high-frequency integrated circuits, etc. The authors present a simple mathematical formula that can be easily implemented in the software of a processor being cooled. As a consequence, the device is able to operate with maximum efficiency assuming required reliability. Theoretical considerations are illustrated by some r... [more]

Keywords: city bus, exhaust emissions, hybrid bus, oxygenated diesel fuel
City buses are one of the main means of public transport in cities. As they move in a limited and densely populated area and are intensively exploited, it is particularly important that they are environmentally friendly. There are many ways to reduce emissions from city buses, including the use of hybrid propulsion. Another way is to use low-emission fuels. This article presents the results of the emission tests of an 18 m articulated city bus with a serial hybrid drive fuelled comparatively by conventional diesel fuel and oxygenated fuel containing 10% v/v of triethylene glycol dimethyl ether (TEGDME). The emission tests were carried out during the actual operation of the bus on a route in Poznań (Poland) and over the SORT cycles. The obtained test results were compared also with the results obtained for a conventional bus. The reduction in emissions of some exhaust components was found when the hybrid bus was fuelled with oxygenated fuel during its actual operation on the bus route.... [more]
Wave Resource Assessments: Spatiotemporal Impacts of WEC Size and Wave Spectra on Power Conversion
Gabrielle Dunkle, Shangyan Zou, Bryson Robertson
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: marine renewable energy, net power assessment (NPA), wave energy converters, wave resource assessments
Wave energy has the potential to power significant portions of economies around the world. Standard International Electrotechnical Commission methods for determining wave energy quantifies the gross wave resource available in the ocean, yet a significant portion of this resource is not usable by specific wave energy converters (WECs). This can provide a misleading assessment of the spatiotemporal opportunities for wave energy in deployment locations. Therefore, there is a need to develop a new technique to assess potential wave power from a device point of view that is generally applicable across WEC sizes. To address this challenge, a novel net power assessment methodology is proposed, which implements Budal’s upper bound (which describes the power available to a WEC based on its stroke), the radiation power limit (which describes the maximum radiation-based amount of wave power a WEC can absorb), and total gross incident wave power as absorbable power upper bounds. Spatiotemporal opp... [more]
