Optimal Tradeoff between MPP and Stability of a PV-Based Pumping System
Wahid Souhail, Sameer Alsharif, Irfan Ahmed, Hedi Khammari
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bifurcation, maximum power operating point, photovoltaic, stability, water pumping system
This paper presents a novel algorithm to pick PV-based pumping system operating points that simultaneously achieve maximum delivered power and optimized stability. We present an in-depth analysis of operating point dynamics and shape the PV output current and voltage parameter plans. Accordingly, we draw the power bifurcation diagram with all possible operating points. Our proposed algorithm picks the power operating point midway between two consecutive stable points and far enough from the stability boundary to assure system safety. We validated our methodology successfully by numerical simulation based on speculative evidence using MATCON/MATLAB/SimPowerSystems blocks. In addition, we compared the proposed algorithm with P&O MPPT algorithm, and the results verified the reliability of our proposed algorithm to deliver maximum stable power.

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ecology, European Union, high school students, national security, non-emission economy, renewable energy sources, social development
Renewable energy sources are an alternative to traditional sources and are based on inexhaustible and environmentally friendly supply. Various controversies have been stirred up by the development of energy production from renewable sources, e.g., due to the high cost of these investments or carbon footprint at the production stage of renewable installations, or later in the disposal process. However, they seem to be gradually offset by the numerous benefits that outweigh the initial costs of their support. Therefore, it is not surprising that European Union (EU) countries are at the forefront of the transition to a low-emission economy. This is evidenced, e.g., by a 22% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in Member States, with gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 58% between 1990 and 2017. Nevertheless, the use of renewable energy sources such as sun, wind, water, etc. is much more expensive than burning fossil fuels. This argument of high investment costs can be decisive in deci... March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biodiesel/diesel blends, carbon monoxide, combustion stability, cyclic variations, nitrogen oxides, reactivity-controlled compression ignition combustion, soot, unburned hydrocarbons
A single-cylinder marine diesel engine was modified to be operated in reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) combustion mode. The engine fueling system was upgraded to a common rail fuel injection system. Natural gas (NG) was used as port fuel injection, and a diesel/sunflower methyl ester biodiesel mixture was used for direct fuel injection. The fraction of biodiesel in the direct fuel injection was changed from 0% (B0; 0% biodiesel and 100% diesel) to 5% (B5) and 20% (B20) while keeping the total energy input into the engine constant. The objective was to understand the impacts of the increased biodiesel fraction on the combustion characteristics and stability, emissions, and knocking/misfiring behavior, keeping all other influential parameters constant. The results showed that nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions of B5 and B20 without the need for any after-treatment devices were lower than the NOx emission limit of the Euro VI stationary engine regulation. B5 and B20 NOx emis... [more]

Keywords: battery recycling, battery reuse, electric vehicles, electric vehicles, literature review, lithium-ion battery, recycling processes, technology of processes
During recent years, emissions reduction has been tightened worldwide. Therefore, there is an increasing demand for electric vehicles (EVs) that can meet emission requirements. The growing number of new EVs increases the consumption of raw materials during production. Simultaneously, the number of used EVs and subsequently retired lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) that need to be disposed of is also increasing. According to the current approaches, the recycling process technology appears to be one of the most promising solutions for the End-of-Life (EOL) LIBs—recycling and reusing of waste materials would reduce raw materials production and environmental burden. According to this performed literature review, 263 publications about “Recycling of Lithium-ion Batteries from Electric Vehicles” were classified into five sections: Recycling Processes, Battery Composition, Environmental Impact, Economic Evaluation, and Recycling & Rest. The whole work reviews the current-state of publications dedi... [more]

Keywords: AC-DC conversion, MVDC, power capacity upgrade, power system transformation, transmission lines
Several countries around the world are undergoing a radical transformation of their electricity networks, with the widespread integration of distributed generation based on renewable energy sources at the center of the change. Under these scenarios, DC links are becoming an attractive option for the infrastructure of modern networks, especially at medium voltage levels. This work is devoted to the integration of DC systems in existing AC networks by converting AC power lines to DC. The work presents a novel method for converting a three-conductor medium voltage AC transmission line to DC. The efficiency of the proposed conversion is assessed in terms of increased power capacity. It is shown that the proposed approach allows for increasing the power capacity of the line by at least 10%. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method are then confirmed by laboratory experiments.

Keywords: charging behaviors, charging incentives, charging stations, data analysis, decentral charging, economical impacts, electric mobility, electric vehicle’s battery, energy market, home photovoltaic system, load shifting potential, optimized charging
The rapid increase of electric vehicles (EVs) would lead to a rise in load demand on power grids but create different potential benefits as well. Those benefits comprise EVs serving as a mobile energy storage system to participate in adjusting the load on the power grids and helping manage renewable energy resources. This paper evaluates the effect of dynamic electricity prices and home photovoltaic (PV) system incentives on users’ EVs charging behavior and potential impacts on grid load and household economy. This has been done by establishing and assessing three different optimized charging configurations and comparing them to an uncontrolled charging strategy. In this study, the charging incentives are applied to a representative sample of 100 households with EVs and PV systems in a metropolitan area. The results show that an optimized charging strategy based on the dynamic electricity tariff can reduce charging costs by 18.5%, while a PV-based optimized strategy can reduce the cost... [more]

Keywords: concentrated solar power plants, micro gas turbine, solar dish, stationary system model
In the framework of the European Optimised Microturbine Solar Power system (OMSoP) project, a novel energy system for solar electricity production was developed, based on the integration of the solar dish technology with Micro Gas Turbines (MGT). A pilot plant with a capacity of 5−7 kWe was realized and installed at the ENEA Casaccia site (Rome) and went under testing to validate the feasibility of the technology and improve the current design. The present work deals with the development of a quasi-state system model, built in the Engineering Equation Solver environment, composed of different modules that correspond to the main system components. The system model was used to define the optimal system parameters, to help the elaboration on an operational strategy to maximize the overall plant efficiency, and to guide the improvement of the single components in view of their optimised design. From the analysis it emerged that the system in design conditions is able to generate, in nomina... [more]

Li Zhao, Kun Li, Wu Zhao, Han-Chen Ke, Zhen Wang
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: driving cycle (DC), driving pulse chain, electric vehicle (EV), Markov state transition probability matrix, sticky sampling algorithm (SSA)
Driving cycle (DC) plays an important role in designing and evaluating EVs, and many Markov chain-based DC construction methods describe driving profiles of unfixed-line vehicles with Markov state transition probability. However, for fixed-line electric vehicles, the time-sequence of microtrips brings huge influences on their brake, drive, and battery management systems. Simply describing topography, traffic, location, driving features, and environment in a stochastic manner cannot reflect the continuity characteristics hidden in a fixed route. Thus, in this paper, we propose a sticky sampling and Markov state transition matrix based DC construction algorithm to describe both randomness and continuity hidden in a fixed route, in which a data structure named “driving pulse chain” was constructed to describe the sequence of the driving scenarios and several Markov state transition matrices were constructed to describe the random distribution of velocity and acceleration in same driving s... Keywords: embodied natural gas scarcity risk, local natural gas scarcity risk, multi-regional input–output model, the Belt and Road, top network analysis
The rapid development of the Belt and Road economics has generated a considerable energy demand. Under the general trend of the global energy transition, natural gas resources are becoming the main driving force. The limited natural gas resources are posing a significant risk to economies, and this risk may also be transferred to other distant regions through economic trade. The aim of this study is to explore the trans-regional (sectoral) transmission pattern of natural gas scarcity risk. The main contribution of this paper is the assessment of the local natural gas scarcity risk (LGSR) and cross-region transfer relationship of embodied natural gas scarcity risk (EGSR), which are evaluated for the BRI economies. In addition, the network amplification effect is considered when evaluating the cross-regional impact of natural gas scarcity risk. The results show that, at the national level, Turkey, Ukraine, and Bulgaria have significant EGSR related to exports activities. The natural gas... [more]

Keywords: hydraulic fracturing, hydraulic slotting, improvement of technology, in situ tests, in-seam gas drainage, intensive coal mining, surface wells, underground boreholes
One of the ways to resolve the “green energy-economic development” dilemma, in which the coal industry is situated, is by the improvement of technologies and the integrated use of extracted resources, including methane gas as a clean energy source. Using the example of the Kirova mine, located in Kuznetsk coal basin—one of the ecologically unfavorable coal mining regions of Russia—this article discusses an integrated technology for the extraction of coalbed methane (ECBM), which makes it possible to reduce greenhouse gas (methane) emissions and improve the safety and intensity of coal mining. The Kirova mine, with its 3 Mt production in 2019, is one of the coal mining leaders in Russia. The available mining equipment has the potential to significantly increase the output; however, gas is a limiting factor to this. The customary approaches to coal seam degassing have already been petered out. The miners and mine science are facing a challenge to validate and test an alternative technolo... [more]

Keywords: divertor, effective thermal conductivity, fusion reactor, gas cooling, high heat flux condition, porous media, sintered particles, unidirectional porous tube
To discuss a suitable porous structure for helium gas cooling under high heat flux conditions of a nuclear fusion divertor, we first evaluate effective thermal conductivity of sintered copper-particles in a simple cubic lattice by direct numerical heat-conduction simulation. The simulation reveals that the effective thermal conductivity of the sintered copper-particle highly depends on the contacting state of each particle, which leads to the difficulty for the thermal design. To cope with this difficulty, we newly propose utilization of a unidirectional porous tube formed by explosive compression technology. Quantitative prediction of its cooling potential using the heat transfer correlation equation demonstrates that the heat transfer coefficient of the helium gas cooling at the pressure of 10 MPa exceeds 30,000 W/m2/K at the inlet flow velocity of 25 m/s, which verifies that the unidirectional porous copper tubes can be a candidate for the gas-cooled divertor concept.

Keywords: medium-voltage photovoltaic power plant, SiC power modules, solid-state transformer
The production of large-scale photovoltaics (PVs) is becoming increasingly popular in the field of power generation; they require the construction of power plants of several hundred megawatts. Nevertheless, the construction of these PV power plants with conventional low-voltage (LV) conversion systems is not an appropriate technological path. Particularly, large cross-section cables, a high quantity of semiconductors, and the bulky layout of 50/60-Hz step-up transformers make the PV system less competitive in terms of energy efficiency and cost. To overcome these drawbacks, this paper introduces new PV plant topologies with an intermediate medium-voltage direct current (MVDC) collector that requires galvanic isolation for connecting the PV arrays. Then, the design of a power electronic transformer (PET) is proposed, implementing 1.7-kV and 3.3-kV silicium carbide (SiC) power modules. The study confirms that this converter allows the use of medium-frequency (MF) transformers with high p... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: interdiffusion, organic solar cells, solvent vapor annealing
The fabrication of bulk heterojunction organic solar cells (OSCs) is primarily based on a phase demixing during solution deposition. This spontaneous process is triggered when, as a result of a decrease in the solvent concentration, interactions between donor and acceptor molecules begin to dominate. Herein, we present that interdiffusion of the same molecules is possible when a bilayers of donors and acceptors are exposed to solvent vapor. Poly(3-hexyl thiophene) (P3HT), and poly[N-9′-heptadecanyl-2,7-carbazole-alt-5,5-(4′,7′-di-2-thienyl-2′,1′,3′-benzothiadiazole) (PCDTBT) were used as donors and two types of fullerene derivatives were used as acceptors: phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC60BM) and phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC70BM), Secondary ion mass spectrometry depth profiling revealed that the interpenetration of donors and acceptors induced by solvent vapor annealing was dependent on solvent vapor and component compatibility. Exposure to chloroform vapor resulte... [more]

Keywords: cylinder temperature, engine performance, piston ring coating
An engine must operate at an appropriate working temperature, the wear resistance of the engine parts must be increased, and frictional loss of energy must be reduced to increase performance and reduce exhaust pollution. This study determines the effect of cylinder temperature and different coatings for piston rings on engine characteristics. Ni-W alloy and Ni-W-BN(h) composite coatings are applied to the compression ring, and the dynamometer test is performed over 50 h using different operating parameters. The experimental data are analyzed by curve fitting for engine performance with cylinder temperature (Tsc) and the concentration of exhaust pollution particles. The experimental results show that a Ni-W alloy plating increases the wear resistance of piston rings. A Ni-W-BN(h) composite coating contains self-lubricating particles, which increases the wear resistance and lubricating properties. In terms of engine performance, Ni-W-BN(h) coated piston rings give the best brake mean eff... [more]

Keywords: collective self-consumption, district heating and cooling, heat pumps, PV, Renewable Energy Community
Renewable Energy Communities have been recently introduced in European legislation to promote distributed generation from renewable energy sources. In fact, they allow to produce and consume energy from shared local power plants. Low temperature district heating and cooling networks with distributed heat pumps have demonstrated their capability to exploit renewable and waste heat sources in the urban environment. Therefore, they are considered a promising infrastructure to help decarbonize the building sector. As their main operating cost is the electricity purchased by the utility for heat pumps and circulation pumps, this work investigates whether a Renewable Energy Community could help mitigate such cost by sharing electricity produced by local photovoltaic (PV) systems. The research relies on computer simulations performed with both physical and statistical models for the evaluation of electrical load profiles at the district level. Results show that due to the different seasonalit... [more]

Keywords: squealer tip, tip leakage flow, tip leakage loss, transonic turbine, vortex breakdown
Cavity width and height are two key geometric parameters of squealer tips, which could affect the control effect of squealer tips on tip leakage flow (TLF) of gas turbines. To explore the optimal values and the control mechanisms of cavity width and height, various cases with different cavity widths and heights are investigated by solving the steady Reynolds Averaged Navier−Stokes (RANS) equations. In this study, the range of cavity width is 9.2−15.1 τ, and that of cavity height is 1.0−3.5 τ. The results show that the optimal value of cavity height is 2.5−3.0 τ, and that of cavity width is about 10.0−10.5 τ. The small cavity width could restrain the breakdown of tip leakage vortex (TLV) and reduce the extra mixing loss. Both small cavity width and large cavity height could enhance the blocking effect on the TLF, reducing the corresponding mixing loss. However, both of them will inhibit the length of the scraping vortex (SV), which is bad for the control of loss. In addition, large cavi... [more]

Keywords: biodiesel blends, combustion pressure raise, CVCC, heat release rate
This paper presents the comparison of combustion characteristics in a constant volume combustion chamber (CVCC) with alternative fuel biodiesel blends. To achieve this goal, a CVCC experimental was established, and the biodiesel was made from fish oil and was used as test fuel. The combustion process of diesel fuel (B0) and bio-diesel 10% (B10) will be investigated based on doing experiments with two conditions: air-fuel mixed before and after ignition timing. The influence of the oxygen concentration on the burning process is also being investigated. The results of the research show that the heat release rate of B0 is faster and higher than that of B10 in the case of air-fuel mixed before ignition timing. In the case of after ignition timing, these values are almost similar to B0 and B10.
