Keywords: anaerobic digestion (AD), ash chemistry, bio-coal, biogas (BMP), blending, combustion, digestate, hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC), lignocellulosic biomass, process water
Hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC) can be integrated with anaerobic digestion (AD) for the treatment of digestate, resulting in a solid hydrochar or bio-coal and a process water, which can be recirculated back into AD to produce biogas. The properties of digestate-derived hydrochars do not lend themselves to producing high quality bio-coal and blending with lignocellulosic feedstocks can improve its properties. This study investigates the co-processing of sewage sludge (SS) digestate with three lignocellulosic biomass (grass, privet hedge, and woodchip). The calorific value of the resulting bio-coal is increased following co-processing, although feedstock interactions result in non-additive behaviour. The largest increase in calorific value was observed for co-processing with woodchip. There is evidence for non-additive partitioning of metals during co-processing resulting in only moderate improvements in ash chemistry during combustion. Co-processing also effects the composition of proc... [more]

Daniele Tomatis, François Bidault, Adrien Bruneton, Zarko Stankovski
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ALAMOS, graphical user interface, lattice transport computer codes, Silène
This article presents an overview of the graphical user interfaces (GUIs) developed at CEA/SERMA (Service d’Études des Réacteurs et de Mathématiques Appliquées) in Saclay, France, which have been used for over forty years by engineers and scientists to build geometries and meshes for general-purpose lattice transport calculations (neutrons and photons). Several applications make use of these calculations, from fuel assembly to full core design, criticality and safety, needing consistency check of the geometry and input properties before starting any lattice calculation. The software pattern design of the GUIs is briefly discussed, showing also the rationale behind the two interfaces for the construction of the geometries for simple fuel assemblies and complex motifs including the reflector (colorsets). The new GUI, ALAMOS, specifically developed for APOLLO3® with a Python Application Programming Interface (API), is here presented as the successor of Silène, which was the first GUI rele... [more]

Keywords: curtailed energy, Energy Storage, flexibility, hydrogen storage, renewable energy sources, underground salt cavern
Hydrogen is becoming an increasingly important energy carrier in sector integration for fuel cell transportation, heat and electricity. Underground salt caverns are one of the most promising ways to store the hydrogen obtained from water electrolysis using power generation from renewable energy sources (RES). At the same time, the production of hydrogen can be used to avoid energy curtailments during times of low electricity demand or low prices. The stored hydrogen can also be used during times of high energy demand for power generation, e.g., with fuel cells, to cover the fluctuations and shortages caused by low RES generation. This article presents an overview of the techniques that were used and proposed for using excess energy from RES for hydrogen production from water and its storage techniques, especially in underground salt caverns, for the aforementioned purpose, and its feasibility. This paper compares and summarizes the competing technologies based on the current state-of-t... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: BES, bioelectricity, concentration, conductivity, MFC, Modelling
Bioelectrochemical systems have been the focus of extensive research due to their unique advantages of converting the chemical energy stored in waste to electricity. To acquire a better understanding and optimize these systems, modelling has been employed. A 2D microbial fuel cell (MFC) model was developed using the finite element software Comsol Multiphysics® (version 5.2), simulating a two-chamber MFC operating in batch mode. By solving mass and charge balance equations along with Monod−Butler−Volmer kinetics, the operation of the MFC was simulated. The model accurately describes voltage output and substrate consumption in the MFC. The computational results were compared with experimental data, thus validating the model. The voltage output and substrate consumption originating from the model were in agreement with the experimental data for two different cases (100 Ω, 1000 Ω external resistances). A polarization curve was extracted from the model by shifting the external resistance gr... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: accelerated aging, implantable batteries, lithium titanium oxide, overdischarge, sacral nerve stimulation, spinal cord stimulation
For implanted medical devices containing rechargeable batteries, maximizing battery lifetime is paramount as surgery is required for battery replacement. In non-life-sustaining applications (e.g., spinal cord stimulators or sacral nerve modulation), these implants may be left unused and unmaintained for extended periods, according to patient preference or in the case of unexpected life events. In this study, we examine the performance of two commercial lithium-ion cells intended for implantable neurostimulators (using lithium titanium oxide (LTO) and graphite as the negative electrode) when subjected to repeated deep overdischarge and to aging at a high state of charge (SOC). The graphite-based cells exhibited significant performance decline and swelling after overdischarge and became unable to store a charge after 42 days at 0 V. In contrast, the LTO-based cells exhibited minimal changes in performance even after 84 days (the length of the study) at 0 V. When subjected to an accelerat... [more]

Mateusz Szul, Tomasz Iluk, Jarosław Zuwała
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biogenic residues, BtX, Carbon Dioxide, CFB, gasification, pressure gasification
This research discusses the results of experiments performed on a large-scale gasification installation to determine the influence of total system pressure and partial pressure of CO2 on the efficiency of conversion and the quality of the produced gas. The three tested feedstocks were bark, lignin and a blend of bark and wheat straw, while softwood pellet (SWP) was used as a reference fuel. A mixture of O2/CO2/H2O was used as a gasification agent. The tests were devised to validate the previously proposed process parameters, verify whether similar ash agglomeration problems would occur and compare the thermal behaviour of the feedstocks converted in close-to-industrial process conditions. An understanding of the effect of using CO2 for gasification was further deepened, especially regarding its influence on the yield of H2 and temperature profiles of the fluidized bed. The influence of gasification pressure was predominantly visible in higher yields of all hydrocarbons (including CH4)... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: acceptability, acceptance, airborne wind energy, opposition, perception, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Airborne wind energy (AWE) systems use tethered flying devices to harvest higher-altitude winds to produce electricity. For the success of the technology, it is crucial to understand how people perceive and respond to it. If concerns about the technology are not taken seriously, it could delay or prevent implementation, resulting in increased costs for project developers and a lower contribution to renewable energy targets. This literature review assessed the current state of knowledge on the social acceptance of AWE. A systematic literature search led to the identification of 40 relevant publications that were reviewed. The literature expected that the safety, visibility, acoustic emissions, ecological impacts, and the siting of AWE systems impact to which extent the technology will be accepted. The reviewed literature viewed the social acceptance of AWE optimistically but lacked scientific evidence to back up its claims. It seemed to overlook the fact that the impact of AWE’s charact... March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: comprehensive performance evaluation, densification, liquid hydrogen, liquid oxygen, subcooling combination matching
Densified liquid hydrogen/liquid oxygen is a promising propulsion fuel in the future. In order to systematically demonstrate the benefits and challenges of densified liquid hydrogen/liquid oxygen, a transient thermodynamical model considering the heat leakage, temperature rise, engine thrust, pressurization pressure of the tank, and wall thickness of tank is developed in the present paper, and the performance of densified liquid hydrogen/liquid oxygen as propulsion fuel is further evaluated in actual application. For liquid hydrogen/liquid oxygen tanks at different structural dimensions, the effects of many factors such as temperature rise during propellant ground parking, lift of engine thrust, mass reduction of the tank structure, and extension of spacecraft in-orbit time are analyzed to demonstrate the comprehensive performance of liquid hydrogen/liquid oxygen after densification. Meanwhile, the problem of subcooling combination matching of liquid hydrogen/liquid oxygen is proposed... [more]

Keywords: certification, grid emulator, hardware-in-the-loop, nacelle test bench, wind turbine
Recently developed nacelle test benches for wind turbines, equipped with multi-physics Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) systems, enable advanced testing and even certification of next-generation wind turbines according to IEC61400-21. On the basis of three experiments carried out with a commercial 3.2 MW wind turbine, this paper shows to which extent test bench hardware and HiL systems influence certification results. For the crucial Fault-Ride-Through tests, all deviations were found to be below 1% compared to field and simulation results. For this test, the power HiL system and the accuracy of its impedance emulation are found to be of most relevance. The results for the test items Frequency Control and Synthetic Inertia were found to be more sensitive to shortcomings of the mechanical HiL with its control system. Based on these findings, the paper mentions general procedures to ensure the quality of test benches with HiL systems and, with that, ensure the quality of certification.

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: climate change reduction, green renewable energy, rice straw, vegetable waste management
With reference to the province of Novara in northwest Italy, this study aims to raise awareness about the environmental benefits that can derive from the use of alternative rice straw management practices to those currently in use, also highlighting how the use of these straws for energy purposes can be a valid alternative to the use of non-renewable resources. Using the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) method, the two rice straw management practices currently in place (open field combustion and straw incorporation) were compared with an alternative strategy consisting in their collection and removal. The results show that removal of straw allows reducing the emissions of pollutants significantly: about one-hundredth of the PM (Particulate Matter) formation compared to the open-field burning and about one-tenth of the ozone depletion (CFCs, HCFCs, halons, etc.) compared to both the other two practices. Moreover, the LCA results show how the use of rice straw to produce energy as an alternat... [more]

Keywords: azimuth, failure damage evaluation, failure location, fluid–solid coupling, stress concentration, wind turbine blade
Blades in strong wind conditions are prone to various failures and damage that is due to the action of random variable amplitude loads. In this study, we analyze the failure of 1.5 MW horizontal axis wind turbine blades. The computational fluid dynamics unsteady calculation method is used to simulate the aerodynamic load distribution on the blade. Fluid−structure coupling methods are applied to calculate the blade stress. The results show that the equivalent stress of the blade is the largest when the azimuth angle is 30°, and the maximum equivalent stress is 20.60 MPa. There are obvious stress peaks in six sections, such as r/R = 0.10 (the span length of blade/the full length of the blade = 0.10). The frequency of damage that is caused by the stress in each area of the blade is determined based on the blade damage. The frequency of gel coat cracking in the blade tips and leaves is 77.78% and 22.22%, respectively, and the frequency of crack occurrence is 87.75%, 10.20% and 2.05%, respe... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: co-current heat exchanger, flow boiling, heat transfer coefficient, mini-channel, Trefftz functions
This paper presents the results of research on heat transfer during fluid flow in a heat exchanger with two rectangular mini-channels. There was Fluorinert FC-72 flow, heated by the plate in the hot mini-channel, and co-current flow of distilled water in the cold mini-channel. Both fluids were separated by the copper plate. A thermal imaging camera was used to measure the temperature distribution of the outer surface of the heated plate. The purpose of the calculations was to determine the heat transfer coefficients at the contact surfaces: the heated plate—FC-72 and FC-72—the copper plate. Two mathematical models have been proposed to describe the heat flow. In the 1D approach, only the heat flow direction perpendicular to the fluid flow direction was assumed. In the 2D model, it was assumed that the temperature of the heated plate and FC-72 and the copper plate meet the appropriate energy equation, supplemented by the boundary conditions system. In this case, the Trefftz functions we... [more]

Keywords: AVL ECXITE/CRUISE M, belt starter generator, MATLAB/Simulink, P0 mild hybrid power train, realistic driving conditions, simulations, vibration control
In order to meet the increasingly stricter emissions’ regulations, road vehicles require additional technologies aimed at the reduction of emissions from the internal combustion engine (ICE). A favorable solution from the standpoint of costs and simplicity of integration is a 48-V electrical architecture utilizing a low-voltage/high-power induction machine, which operates as the so-called engine belt starter generator (BSG) coupled via a timing belt with the ICE crankshaft within a P0 mild hybrid power train and used for starting up and boosting of the ICE power output, as well as for recuperating kinetic energy during vehicle deceleration. The aim of this work was to design a vibration damping system for the belt transmission within the so-called front end accessory drive (FEAD), which couples the BSG with the ICE crankshaft and to test the control system by means of simulations for realistic operating regimes of the P0 mild hybrid power train in order to show the functionality of the... Krzysztof Dmitruk, Andrzej Sikorski
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active frequency drift, anti-islanding detection, energy quality, predictive control, renewable energy source, three-phase converter
The article presents a modified standard Active Frequency Drift (AFD) method used to detect unintentional island operation in converters generating electricity from renewable energy sources to the power grid. The primary aim of each of the island operation detection methods is the possibility of shortening the energising of a separate part of the power grid. The proposed method eliminates fragments of the reference current signal when it reaches a constant value for a particular time. This part of the signal is replaced with the hyperbolic sine function. It allows reducing the value of Total Harmonic Distortions (THD) while maintaining the same effectiveness of island operation detection. The article contains a detailed description of the newly proposed type of disturbance generation. The proposed solution is verified by conducting simulation and laboratory tests. The possibility of shortening the island operation detection time is proven by increasing the maximum distortion introduced... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy transition, flexibility, green hydrogen (H2), hydrogen-production costs, operation mode, power-to-gas, renewable energies
Green hydrogen produced by power-to-gas will play a major role in the defossilization of the energy system as it offers both carbon-neutral chemical energy and the chance to provide flexibility. This paper provides an extensive analysis of hydrogen production in decentralized energy systems, as well as possible operation modes (H2 generation or system flexibility). Modelling was realized for municipalities—the lowest administrative unit in Germany, thus providing high spatial resolution—in the linear optimization framework OEMOF. The results allowed for a detailed regional analysis of the specific operating modes and were analyzed using full-load hours, share of used negative residual load, installed capacity and levelized cost of hydrogen to derive the operation mode of power-to-gas to produce hydrogen. The results show that power-to-gas is mainly characterized by constant hydrogen production and rarely provides flexibility to the system. Main drivers of this dominant operation mode i... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bubbling fluidized bed, electro-thermal energy storage, finned tubes, fluidized bed heat exchanger, heat transfer, horizontal tubes, sandTES, thermal energy storage
The sandTES technology utilizes a fluidized bed counter current heat exchanger for thermal energy storage applications. Its main feature is an imposed horizontal flow of sand (SiO2) particles fluidized by a vertical air flow across a heat exchanger consisting of several horizontal rows of tubes. Past international research on heat transfer in dense fluidized beds has focused on stationary (stirred tank) systems, and there is little to no information available on the impact of longitudinal or helical fins. Previous pilot plant scale experiments at TU Wien led to the conclusion that the currently available correlations for predicting the heat transfer coefficient between the tube surface and the surrounding fluidized bed are insufficient for the horizontal sand flow imposed by the sandTES technology. Therefore, several smaller test rigs were designed in this study to investigate the influence of different tube arrangements and flow conditions on the external convective heat transfer coef... March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fuzzy systems, invisible power generation, power estimation, representative PV sites, Solar Photovoltaic
In recent years, the penetration of photovoltaic (PV) power generation in Taiwan has increased significantly. However, most photovoltaic facilities, especially for small-scale sites, do not include relevant monitoring and real-time measurement devices. The invisible power generation from these PV sites would cause a huge challenge on power system scheduling. Therefore, appropriate methods to estimate invisible PV power generation are needed. The main purpose of this paper is to propose an improved fuzzy model for estimating the PV power generation, which includes the clustering processing for PV sites, selection of representative PV sites, and the improvement of the conventional fuzzy model. First, this research uses the K-nearest neighbor (KNN) algorithm to fill in some of the missing data; then, two clustering algorithms are applied to cluster all the photovoltaic sites. Next, the relationship between the power generation of a single PV site and the total generation of all sites at t... [more]

Keywords: biocrude, hydrodenitrogenation, hydrothermal liquefaction, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, SAF
Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) uses heat and pressure to liquefy the organic matter in biomass/waste feedstocks to produce biocrude. When hydrotreated the biocrude is converted into transportation fuels including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Further, by liquifying the organic matter in wet wastes such as sewage sludge, manure, and food waste, HTL can prevent landfilling or other disposal methods such as anerobic digestion, or incineration. A significant roadblock to the development of a new route for SAF is the strict approval process, and the large volumes required (>400 L) for testing. Tier α and β testing can predict some of the properties required for ASTM testing with <400 mL samples. The current study is the first to investigate the potential for utilizing wet-waste HTL biocrude (WWHTLB) as an SAF feedstock. Herein, several WWHTLB samples were produced from food waste, sewage sludge, and fats, oils, and grease, and subsequently hydrotreated and distilled to produce SAF sa... [more]

Keywords: demand response, elasticity of substitution, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, wholesale electricity market
The energy transition has shown that fossil generation can be complemented with renewable energy and other resources capable of providing flexibility to the energy system’s operation, in compliance with the wholesale electricity market’s rules. This paper proposes a market-based methodology for introducing flexible demand in the energy dispatch, optimizing the scheduling of electricity system operation in the short-term, and considers the challenge of implementing an incentive scheme for participants in demand-response programs. The scheme includes the criteria of the elasticity of substitution and a renewable energy quota. This methodology is focused on a strategic demand shift to minimize the cost of supply; increase the dispatch of renewable energy; control CO2 emissions; and satisfy the generation, demand, and transmission operating constraints. These conditions encourage the development of a simulation tool that allows a sensitivity analysis to aid decision-making by operators and... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: atmospheric stability, meteorological mast, offshore wind, Richardson number, wind shear
South Korea is surrounded by the sea on three sides. The characteristics of offshore wind resources vary from region to region due to the influence of the distribution of the coastline and differences in roughness length and atmospheric stability between the coast and the sea. In particular, turbulent gusts and low-level wind shear occurring near the hub height of the wind turbine within the atmospheric boundary layer have a significant effect on the load of wind turbines. These severe weather phenomena are closely related to atmospheric stability. Therefore, the objective of this study is to determine differences in wind resource characteristics in the South Korean offshore and coast in relation to variations in atmospheric stability using observation data from the HeMOSU-1 meteorological tower in the West Sea and the Boseong meteorological observation tower on the southern coast. On the southern coast, changes in sea and land breezes are observed throughout diurnal and nocturnal peri... [more]

Keywords: backward reduction methodology, DG, gorilla troops optimizer, Monte Carlo simulation approach, radial distribution system, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar, uncertainties, Wind
Renewable distributed generators (RDGs) are widely embedded in electrical distribution networks due to their economic, technological, and environmental benefits. However, the main problem with RDGs, photovoltaic generators, and wind turbines, in particular, is that their output powers are constantly changing due to variations in sun irradiation and wind speed, leading to power system uncertainty. Such uncertainties should be taken into account when selecting the optimal allocation of RDGs. The main innovation of this paper is a proposed efficient metaheuristic optimization technique for the sizing and placement of RDGs in radial distribution systems considering the uncertainties of the loading and RDG output power. A Monte Carlo simulation method, along with the backward reduction algorithm, is utilized to create a set of scenarios to model these uncertainties. To find the positions and ratings of the RDGs, the artificial gorilla troops optimizer (GTO), a new efficient strategy that mi... [more]

Keywords: drone battery life, Energy Efficiency, force-sensing resistor, lateral misalignment, multi-turn copper wire coil, power consumption, single tube loop aluminum coil, vertical alignment
Recent major advancements in drone charging station design are related to the differences in coil design between the material (copper or aluminum) and inner thickness (diameter design) to address power transfer optimization and increased efficiency. The designs are normally challenged with reduced weight on the drone’s side, which can lead to reduced payload or misalignment position issues between receiver and transmitter, limiting the performance of wireless charging. In this work, the coil combination was tested in vertical alignment from 2 cm to 50 cm, and in lateral misalignment positions that were stretched across 2, 5, 8, 10, and 15 cm ranges. Simulated and experimental results demonstrated improved transfer distances when the drone battery load was 100 Ω. With the proposed design, the vertical transfer power that was achieved was 21.12 W, 0.460 A, with 81.5% transfer efficiency, while the maximum lateral misalignment air gap that was achieved was 2 cm with 19.22 W and 74.15% eff...
