Shuhei Yamano, Atsushi Akisawa
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: high-speed DG, load sharing, medium-speed DG, microgrid, mixed-integer programming
This study investigates the additional installation of a high-speed diesel generator to independent microgrids (MG) such as remote islands where relatively efficient medium-speed diesel generators (DGs) are mainly used. While small-sized and lightweight, high-speed DGs are not widely spread for continuous usage because their efficiency is lower than that of the medium-speed DGs. The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of the new method of load sharing optimization to improve the economy by interconnecting a high-speed DG to an independent MG where the medium-speed DGs are operated. The study investigates the effect of operation cost reduction by installing the new load sharing method of operation following the load sharing pattern derived by the mixed-integer programming. As a result of this study, there was some effect to installing a high-speed DG operated by the conventional method. In addition, by adding the new method of load sharing with optimization, the econo... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery storage, computation burden, MPPT, PMSG, predictive control, ripples, standalone operation, wind power
This paper introduces a new formulated control scheme for enhancing the dynamic performance of a wind driven surface permanent magnet synchronous generator. The designed control scheme is based on predictive control theory, in which the shortcomings of previous predictive controllers are avoided. To visualize the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme, the performance of the generator was dynamically evaluated under two different operating regimes: grid connection and standalone operation in which a battery storage system was used to enhance the power delivery to the isolated loads. In addition, a detailed performance comparison between the proposed controller and traditional predictive controllers was carried out. The traditional control topologies used for comparison were the model predictive direct power control, model predictive direct torque control, and model predictive current control. A detailed description of each control scheme is introduced illustrating how it is confi... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: demand response, demand-side management, K-mean clustering, standalone hybrid renewable energy system
Many countries have larger land areas and scattered communities. Therefore, to electrify them, small standalone power systems are the more preferred and cost-efficient solution as compared to utility grid extensions. The main objective of a standalone power system is to supply cleaner, cheaper, and uninterrupted electricity. However, for standalone power systems, demand-side management always remains a challenging task. In this paper, a load scheduling algorithm driven by K-mean clustering and linear integer programming to schedule consumers’ appliances for the upcoming day is proposed. In addition, the basic power to run the necessary appliances is kept available in the system all the time. Furthermore, to assist the consumer in every situation, the battery storage system and the overall system size reduction are also taken into consideration. Consumer input is also used in scheduling the appliances. The proposed method is evaluated on the publicly available real-world dataset; the si... [more]
Wind Turbine Power Maximization Using Log-Power Proportional-Integral Extremum Seeking
Devesh Kumar, Mario A. Rotea
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: log-of-power (LP) feedback, proportional-integral extremum seeking control (PIESC), wind turbine power maximization
This paper proposes a Log-Power Proportional-Integral Extremum Seeking Control (LP-PIESC) framework for maximizing the power capture of a wind turbine operating at below-rated wind speeds, i.e., the so-called region-2 of a turbine’s power curve. Extremum seeking control (ESC) has emerged as a viable algorithm to maximize energy capture for a wind turbine operating in region-2. Despite the encouraging results of early ESC strategies, the basic algorithm suffers from slow and inconsistent convergence behavior under changing wind speed within region-2. It has been shown that replacing the power signal with its logarithm results in an algorithm that is robust and predictable even when the mean wind speed varies. In addition, new studies have suggested that replacing conventional ESC with proportional plus integral ESC (PIESC) results in faster convergence to optimal conditions. In the current paper, the idea of log-power feedback is merged with the PIESC scheme and is applied to tune the p... [more]

Ričardas Krikštolaitis, Vincenzo Bianco, Linas Martišauskas, Sigita Urbonienė
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electricity, energy security, indicators, Natural Gas
This work aims to present an analysis of electricity and natural gas supply security in the four European Union countries with the highest level of consumption, namely Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. The goal of the study is to use and adapt a set of 22 indicators for estimating the level of energy security. The evaluation of an index called “Energy Security Level”, measuring the overall energy security, is performed for the period 2006−2018 in order to compare its evolution in each of the analyzed countries. The application of the proposed indicator system demonstrates which measures weakened or strengthened energy security in the past. The analysis of the energy security level demonstrates that Germany and France perform better than Italy and Spain in terms of energy security assurance. The main factors for these differences are the rich energy mix for Germany and the massive presence of nuclear power in France. These two elements make German and French energy systems more resilie... [more]

Keywords: biohydrogen, feedstock, Fermentation, Fossil Fuel, global warming, substrate pretreatment
Hydrogen is an economical source of clean energy that has been utilized by industry for decades. In recent years, demand for hydrogen has risen significantly. Hydrogen sources include water electrolysis, hydrocarbon steam reforming, and fossil fuels, which emit hazardous greenhouse gases and therefore have a negative impact on global warming. The increasing worldwide population has created much pressure on natural fuels, with a growing gap between demand for renewable energy and its insufficient supply. As a result, the environment has suffered from alarming increases in pollution levels. Biohydrogen is a sustainable energy form and a preferable substitute for fossil fuel. Anaerobic fermentation, photo fermentation, microbial and enzymatic photolysis or combinations of such techniques are new approaches for producing biohydrogen. For cost-effective biohydrogen production, the substrate should be cheap and renewable. Substrates including algal biomass, agriculture residue, and wastewate... [more]

In this study, the use of compressed and liquefied natural gas is evaluated for heavy-duty passengers (HDPV) and freight vehicles (HDFV). The evaluation is conducted considering the socioeconomic and vehicle fleet characteristics of Colombia. The energy consumption, the CO2, and the pollutant emissions of a baseline and four natural gas penetration scenarios are analyzed. The results show that the inclusion of natural gas reduces the energy consumption per capita of the HDPV and HDFV by up to 40% by 2050. Furthermore, PM2.5 emissions per capita are reduced up to 77% for HDPV and 90% for HDFV, while CO emissions per capita decreased by 82%. Additionally, the technological renovation of HDFV emerges as an effective way to reduce pollutant emissions in the medium term. The establishment of strategies to make HDFV cleaner and more efficient is imperative for the long term. Finally, a sensitivity analysis is conducted to evaluate the influence of the gross domestic product per capita (GDPc)... [more]

Keywords: absorptance coefficient, concentrated photovoltaics, honeycomb, integration of renewable energy in industry, solid oxide electrolyzer cells, thermolysis
This paper presents a novel system design that considerably improves the entrapment of terrestrial ultraviolet (UV) irradiance in a customized honeycomb structure to produce hydrogen at a standard rate of 7.57 slpm for places with a UV index > 11. Thermolysis of high salinity water is done by employing a solid oxide electrolyzer cell (SOEC), which comprises three customized, novel active optical subsystems to filter, track, and concentrate terrestrial UV solar irradiance by Fresnel lenses. The output of systems is fed to a desalinator, a photovoltaic system to produce electrical energy, and a steam generator with modified surface morphology to generate the required superheated steam for the SOEC. A simulation in COMSOL Multiphysics ver. 5.6 has shown that a customized honeycomb structure, when incorporated on the copper−nickel surface of a steam generator, improves its absorptance coefficient up to 93.43% (48.98%—flat case). This results in generating the required superheated steam of... [more]

The transport sector is one of the main barriers to achieving the European Union’s climate protection objectives. Therefore, more and more restrictive legal regulations are being introduced, setting out permissible limits for the emission of toxic substances emitted into the atmosphere, promoted biofuels and electromobility. The manuscript presents a computer tool to model the total energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions of vehicles with an internal combustion engine of a 2018 Toyota Camry LE. The calculation tool is designed in the OpenModelica environment. Libraries were used for this purpose to build models of vehicles in motion: VehicleInterfaces, EMOTH (E-Mobility Library of OTH Regensburg). The tool developed on the basis of actual driving test data for the selected vehicle provides quantitative models for the instantaneous value of the fuel stream, the model of the instantaneous value of the carbon dioxide emission stream as a function of speed and the torque generated... March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: coverage ratio, module layout, temperature uniformity, thermoelectric power generation
Due to the low efficiency of thermoelectric generators (TEGs), many scholars have focused on the structural optimization of TEGs rather than on the optimization of the layout of thermoelectric modules. We aimed to investigate the effect of module layout on the output power of an automotive exhaust thermoelectric power generation system. The module spacing and module coverage ratio were compared under different working conditions based on a numerical simulation. The results show that, under high-temperature conditions, when the module spacing expands from 5 mm to 35 mm, the output power growth rate of modules of different sizes ranges between 8% and 9%. Moreover, under low-temperature conditions, a high coverage ratio of modules will not increase the total output power but, instead, make it decline. In fact, choosing a larger-size module can improve the temperature uniformity, thereby increasing the output power of the automotive thermoelectric power generation system. Hence, the presen... Improvements in miniaturization and boosting the thermal performance of energy conservation systems call for innovative techniques to enhance heat transfer. Heat transfer enhancement methods have attracted a great deal of attention in the industrial sector due to their ability to provide energy savings, encourage the proper use of energy sources, and increase the economic efficiency of thermal systems. These methods are categorized into active, passive, and compound techniques. This article reviews recent passive heat transfer enhancement techniques, since they are reliable, cost-effective, and they do not require any extra power to promote the energy conversion systems’ thermal efficiency when compared to the active methods. In the passive approaches, various components are applied to the heat transfer/working fluid flow path to improve the heat transfer rate. The passive heat transfer enhancement methods studied in this article include inserts (twisted tapes, conical strips, baffles,... [more]

The penetration of renewable energy is one of the main challenges for sustainable energy development. Local governments across the European Union commit to development and implementation of the Sustainable Energy (and Climate) Action Plan. This paper focuses on the case of Lithuania—a Central and Eastern European country. Almost one-third of Lithuanian municipalities have joined the Covenant of Mayors and prepared the plans that include SWOT analysis. However, there is a lack of information on how those plans contribute to climate change mitigation and sustainable energy development. This study identifies the links between key policy financial instruments, increasing energy efficiency. The Strategic Action Plans aimed at reducing GHG emissions and energy consumption in Lithuanian municipalities are analyzed. The challenges in promoting the renewable energy generation in Lithuanian rural regions are discussed. Moreover, the importance of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats... [more]

This paper exposes the many flaws in the article “Through the Eye of a Needle: An Eco-heterodox Perspective on the Renewable Energy Transition, authored by Siebert and Rees and recently published in Energies as a Review. Our intention in submitting this critique is to expose and rectify the original article’s non-scientific approach to the review process that includes selective (and hence biased) screening of the literature focusing on the challenges related to renewable energies, without discussing any of the well-documented solutions. In so doing, we also provide a rigorous refutation of several statements made by a Seibert−Rees paper, which often appear to be unsubstantiated personal opinions and not based on a balanced review of the available literature.

Keywords: carbonate reservoirs, EOR, high-salinity, surfactant-flooding, surfactants
Surfactant flooding can mobilize trapped oil and change the wettability of the rock to be more hydrophilic, which increases the oil recovery factor. However, the selection of surfactants is difficult in the case of high salinity conditions. In this work, we synthesized three novel anionic-nonionic surfactants based on widely used nonionic surfactant nonylphenol polyethoxylated (NPEO) and evaluated their efficiencies for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in high salinity water (20% NaCl). The modified surfactants showed a decrease in interfacial tension (IFT) up to 10 times compared with the nonionic precursor. All surfactants had changed the wettability of rock to be more hydrophilic according to contact angle measurements. The effectiveness of surfactants was proved by spontaneous imbibition experiments, in which the synthesized surfactants showed a better displacement efficiency and increased oil production by 1.5−2 times. Filtration experiments showed an increase in oil recovery factor by... [more]

Keywords: critical pillar width, cutting height, mining influence, roof cutting and pressure relief
The application of roof-cutting and pressure-relief gob-side entry retention plays a critical role in controlling the stability of the surrounding rock at the entry, easing continuity tension and improving resource recovery ratio. The excavation of the 360,803 airway in Xinji No. 1 Mine is affected by intense mining of the 360,805 working face. Hence, to address the stability problem of surrounding rock in the 360,803 airway, rock mass blast weakening theory was used in this study to analyze the blasting stress of columnar charged rock mass and obtain the radiuses of crushed, fractured, and vibration zones under uncoupled charging conditions. The reasonable array pitch, length, and dip angle of boreholes were determined according to the pressure-relief range of the blasting fracture. The migration laws of roof strata were explored based on a mechanical model of overlying roof strata structure on the working face. Subsequently, the horizon, breaking span, and caving sequence of hard roo... [more]

Keywords: CO2 emissions, industry, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, Sub-Saharan Africa
This study aims to explore the relationship between industry value added, renewable energy, and CO2 emissions in a sample of 44 Sub-Saharan African countries over the period 2000−2015. This study makes several important contributions to extant research. While existing research was focused on the renewable energy-CO2 emissions nexus, the current study assesses the moderating role of the renewables sector in the industrialization-CO2 emissions relationship. In addition, this study considers whether EKC relationships will hold after accounting for structural transformations (including industrial contributions to GDPs). Moreover, we are revising the existence of the EKC framework for the Sub-Saharan African countries. Using a two-step system GMM estimator, we found that the share of industry in GDP has a significant positive impact on CO2 emissions, while renewable electricity output reduces CO2 emissions. If causal, a one percentage point increase in renewable electricity output reduces c... [more]

Keywords: dual clutch transmission, dual mass flywheel, finite element method, hybrid dual clutch transmission, hybrid electric vehicle, rotor dynamics, static deflection
Recent studies show that hybrid powertrains with dual clutch transmission are becoming more common. This is mainly influenced by the fact that they have higher efficiency, allow power-on shifting, and are more compact. However, the electric motor attached to the primary shaft of the transmission might represent some critical issues in statics and dynamics due to additional torque, inertia, and working irregularities. This paper aims to investigate the influence of the electric motor integration in the transmission on the reliability of the overall system. The focus is on the investigation of potential over stresses of the ICE bearings due to the bending of the gearbox primary shaft. To achieve the aim, the static and the rotor dynamic analysis of the inner and outer primary shafts is performed. The numerical analyses show the potential critical issues that can arise from the excessive manufacturing and assembling tolerances, the interaction of the e-machine torque irregularities and in... Keywords: Adsorption, deep marine, effect of pore size, high temperature and high pressure, molecular simulation, shale gas reservoir
Deep marine shale gas reservoirs are extremely rich in the Sichuan basin in China. However, due to the in situ conditions with high temperature and high pressure (HTHP), in particular reservoir pressure being usually much higher than the test pressure, it is difficult to accurately clarify the adsorption behavior, as seepage theory plays an important role in shale gas reserves evaluation. Therefore, three kinds of sorbent, including illite, quartz and kerogen, and two simulation methods, containing the grand canonical ensemble Monte Carlo method and molecular dynamics method, are synthetically used to determine the methane adsorption behavior under HTHP. The results show that both absolute adsorption and excess adsorption decrease with the increase of temperature. When the pressure increases, the absolute adsorption increases quickly and then slowly, and the excess adsorption first increases and then decreases. The superposition of wall potential energy is strongest in a circular hole,... [more]

Keywords: hole transport layer, perovskite, power conversion efficiency, reliability, stability
In this study, we report a perovskite solar cell (PSC) can be benefited from the high quality of inorganic nickel oxide (NiOx) as a hole transport layer (HTL) film fabricated from the physical vapor deposition (PVD) process. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PSC is found to depend on the thickness of NiOx HTL. The NiOx thickness is optimized via quantitative investigation of the structure, optical and electrical properties. With an active area of 11.25 cm2, a PSC module (25 cm2) with a PCE of 15.1% is demonstrated, while statistically averaged PCE = 18.30% with an open voltage (Voc) 1.05 V, short-circuit current density (Jsc) 23.89 mA/cm2, and fill factor (FF) 72.87% can be achieved from 36 devices with smaller active areas of 0.16 cm2. After the stability test at 40% relative humidity (RH) and 25 °C for 1200 h, the highest performance NiOx-based PSC is shown to be about 1.2−1.8 times superior to PEDOT:PSS organic HTL based PSC at the same environment.
