Xingli Jia, Xuefang Qin, Wuxiao Zhou, Xingpeng Chen, Shuangqing Li
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: crest vertical curve, exhaust emission, MOVES, operating mode distribution
The vertical curve is a major factor affecting vehicle exhaust (CO2, CO, NOx, PM2.5) emissions. This article takes a heavy-duty diesel truck as a typical vehicle, combining instantaneous speed, acceleration and the vehicle-specific power VSP to divide the operating mode, and the exhaust emission of a heavy-duty diesel truck is then calculated by using MOVES. Finally, the environmental modification factors (EMFs) are used to evaluate the influence of curvature change on the exhaust emissions. The results show that CO2 and PM2.5 emissions of heavy-duty diesel trucks are increasing with the curvature of the crest vertical curve changing; with the increase and decrease of curvature K of the crest vertical curve by 50%, CO and NOx emissions showed an increasing trend. Among the four main emissions, CO2 emission amount is the largest, followed by NOx, CO and PM2.5. The emission rates of CO2 and PM2.5 increase with the increase of curvature of the crest vertical curve, and the minimum values... [more]
Positive Aspects of Green Roof Reducing Energy Consumption in Winter
Peter Juras
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: comparison, green roof, longwave radiation, measurement, snow, winter
Greening structures attract worldwide attention because of their multidisciplinary benefits. Green roofs are considered one of the best ways to eliminate summer overheating, mitigate climate change, or reduce the urban heat island effect. The winter season and its impact on building energy consumption are often overlooked. Common standards do not take a green roof structure into consideration because of possible high water content in their layers. Additional roof layers may have a positive effect during the winter; they help reduce surface overcooling in cloudless winter nights. This paper analyses experimental measurements taken on two different extensive green roofs and compares the results with a single-ply roof (R) with a PVC membrane. Surface overcooling of the R due to radiation reaching up to 10 °C, whereas the green roof membrane is protected. The influence of thermal loss is not so important for the current climate in Central Europe, as the required U-values are lower than 0.1... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ammonia, boiling, heat transfer coefficient, narrow spaces, plate heat exchanger
This investigation aims to compare the experimental and theoretical ammonia boiling heat transfer coefficient in a plate heat exchanger (PHE). Measured data were gathered during functioning of a single stage vapor mechanical compression refrigeration system placed in the Thermal Systems Research Center of the Technical University of Civil Buildings Bucharest (TUCEB). Experimental values fall within the range of 1377−3050 W/m2K. Theoretical values were obtained from 12 correlations confirmed by the literature to date, developed for similar working conditions. The experimental values are close to the theoretical ones for Shah and Jokar correlations applied for a vapor quality of 0.5. The theoretical values are in the range of 1440−2076 W/m2K and 1558−2318 W/m2K, respectively. Shah correlation predicted 82.35% of all data within the ±30% error band at an MAE value of 14.23%, and Jokar et al. predicted 76.47% of all data within the ±30% error band with an MAE value of 17.7%.

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ARDL, CO2 emissions, energy production, GDP, geopolitical risk, renewable energy sources
The advent of various initiatives around the globe in shaping an energy transition towards a “greener” energy production future sparked a research interest towards the determinants that will shape their success. In this paper, we depart from the relevant literature evaluating the potential effect of geopolitical tensions on renewable energy investments, building on an explicit quantitative approach that provides clear empirical evidence. In doing so, we compile a large panel of 171 economies and measure the effect of geopolitical risk on “green” investing as measured by popular geopolitical risk indices, while controlling for all major variables proposed by literature. Our flexible Autoregressive Distributed Lag model with heterogenous effects across economies suggests that geopolitical risk has a significantly measurable effect on green investments both in the short and the long run. In fact, our results suggest that proper model specification is robust across alternate risk assessmen... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: diesel bus, eco-cooperative adaptive cruise control, eco-driving, field test, fuel consumption model, GLOSA, signalized intersection
In this study, a Green Light Optimal Speed Advisory (GLOSA) system for buses (B-GLOSA) was developed. The proposed B-GLOSA system was implemented on diesel buses, and field tested to validate and quantify the potential real-world benefits. The developed system includes a simple and easy-to-calibrate fuel consumption model that computes instantaneous diesel bus fuel consumption rates. The bus fuel consumption model, a vehicle dynamics model, the traffic signal timings, and the relationship between vehicle speed and distance to the intersection are used to construct an optimization problem. A moving-horizon dynamic programming problem solved using the A-star algorithm is used to compute the energy-optimized vehicle trajectory through signalized intersections. The Virginia Smart Road test facility was used to conduct the field test on 30 participants. Each participant drove three scenarios, including a base case uninformed drive, an informed drive with signal timing information communicat... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: breakthrough experiment, coke oven gas, gas separation, ZIF-8 slurry
A large amount of COG (coke oven gas) is produced from coking plants every year, which contains 55−60% H2. In this work, the breakthrough separation of H2 from COG with ZIF-8/ethylene glycol-water slurry was studied. Following the investigation of the (ab-ad)sorption isotherms of the single component gas CH4 and H2, the main components of coke oven gas, in different slurries and their corresponding viscosities, and the influence of the operating conditions on the dynamic performance of CH4/H2 separation in slurry were studied in a bubble column. Low temperature, inlet flow rate, high pressure, and solid content can extend the breakthrough time, where the longest breakthrough time interval between H2 and CH4 can be as long as 70 min, meaning the high purity of H2 product could be obtained easily. All the results of this work prove the feasibility of the slurry method to separate CH4/H2 mixture and provide a theoretical basis for practical industrial applications.

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: lithium-ion battery, Methodi Ordinatio, ProKnow-C, recycling, valuable metals
Recycling lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) plays an important role in environmental preservation since it prevents heavy metals from polluting the soil and underground water through the recovering of valuable metals. The interest in LIB recycling has grown in recent years due to the environmental and economic gains which can be seen by increasing number of articles and publications. This review uses two methodologies: ProKnow-C and Methodi Ordinatio to create a bibliographic portfolio (BP) that defines the state-of-the-start literature in LIB recycling. This review is vital because it proposes a database of a finite number of publications of relevant authors and articles to service new research on the LIB recycling theme. The research started off with 2515 articles related to the search query which were later filtered and treated to be systematically analyzed. After filtering, 591 articles were left in the filtered raw article database (FRA-database). The efficiency and parameters of ProKn... [more]

Keywords: enhanced surfaces, heat pipes, heat recovery systems, heat sinks, microchannels, time-resolved thermography, variable conductance
This paper addresses a multiscale approach for heat recovery systems, used in two distinct applications. In both applications, a microscale approach is used (microchannel heat sinks and heat pipes) for macroscale applications (cooling of a photovoltaic—PV cell), and the thermal energy of exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine is used for thermoelectric generators with variable conductance heat pipes. Several experimental techniques are combined such as visualization, thermography with high spatial and temporal resolution, and the characterization of the flow hydrodynamics, such as the friction losses. The analysis performed evidences the relevance of looking at the physics of the observed phenomena to optimize the heat sink geometry. For instance, the results based on the dissipated heat flux and the convective heat transfer coefficients obtained in the tests of the microchannel-based heat sinks for cooling applications in PV cells show an improvement in the dissipated power at... Zongming Yang, Mykola Radchenko, Andrii Radchenko, Dariusz Mikielewicz, Roman Radchenko
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: excessive refrigeration energy, gas turbine, hybrid absorption–ejector chiller, two-stage intake air cooling
Gas turbine intake air cooling (TIAC) by exhaust gas heat recovery chillers is a general trend to improve turbine fuel efficiency at increased ambient temperatures. The high efficiency absorption lithium−bromide chillers of a simple cycle are the most widely used, but they are unable to cool inlet air lower than 15 °C. A two-stage hybrid absorption−ejector chillers were developed with absorption chiller as a high temperature stage and ejector chiller as a low temperature stage to subcool air from 15 °C to 10 °C and lower. A novel trend in TIAC by two-stage air cooling in hybrid chillers has been substantiated to provide about 50% higher annual fuel saving in temperate climate as compared with absorption cooling. A new approach to reduce practically twice design cooling capacity of absorption chiller due to its rational distribution with accumulating excessive refrigeration energy at decreased thermal loads to cover the picked demands and advanced design methodology based on it was prop... Keywords: Biomass, contamination, fly ash, gasifier, poisoning, SOFC
The integration of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) with biomass gasification reactors raises the possibility of solid particle contamination of the gaseous fuel entering the cell. Technical specifications from SOFC manufacturers, among other sources, claim that SOFCs do not tolerate the presence of solid particles in fuel. However, there is very limited literature on the experimental investigation of feeding SOFCs with particulate matter aerosols. In this study, a standard 5 × 5 cm anode-supported SOFC was fueled by two types of aerosols, namely, (1) inert powder of grain sizes and concentration equivalent to gasifier fly ash and (2) a real downdraft gasifier fly ash, both suspended in a gaseous fuel mixture. For reference, cells were also investigated with a dust-free fuel gas of the same composition. A straightforward negative influence of the inert powder aerosol could not be confirmed in experiments with a duration of 6 days. That said, the introduction of carbonaceous fly ash aeros... [more]

Keywords: energy consumption, Energy Efficiency, solar energy, ventilation
The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of a low-cost solar collector to pre-heat ventilation air in commercial broiler buildings on supplemental heating demand and air quality during the cold season. Six black fabric-based solar collectors of 36 m2 each were installed on the south-facing rooftop of a broiler house. The solar collectors provided fresh warm air into the house during the ON cycle of minimum ventilation and during the OFF cycle of minimum ventilation when the temperature under the collectors met certain criteria. The daily cumulative duration of solar collectors in operation averaged 125 and 133 min during the first two or four weeks of brooding in the fall and winter flocks, respectively. When in operation, the solar collectors were able to raise up to 20 K above the ambient temperature, reducing fuel usage by 7% in the fall and winter flocks. The greatest challenge of solar collector utilization was the collectors providing less than half of ventilation ai... [more]

Keywords: cluster analysis, genetic type of kerogen, oil gas, shale gas, total organic carbon (TOC), unconventional resources
In the last decade, exploration for unconventional hydrocarbon (shale gas) reservoirs has been carried out in Poland. The drilling of wells in prospective shale gas areas supplies numerous physicochemical measurements from rock and reservoir fluid samples. The objective of this paper is to present the method that has been developed for finding similarities between individual geological structures in terms of their hydrocarbon generation properties and hydrocarbon resources. The measurements and geochemical investigations of six wells located in the Ordovician, Silurian, and Cambrian formations of the Polish part of the East European Platform are used. Cluster analysis is used to compare and classify objects described by multiple attributes. The focus is on the issue of generating clusters that group samples within the gas, condensate, and oil windows. The vitrinite reflectance value (Ro) is adopted as the criterion for classifying individual samples into the respective windows. An addi... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: continuum damage mechanics, hydraulic fracturing, natural fractures, permeability, reservoir
The presence of natural fractures can significantly affect the quality of hydraulic fracturing operations in tightsand and shale or oil/gas formations. This paper describes the procedure used to model natural fractures with continuum damage tensor and the resulting orthotropic permeability tensor. A damage model that uses damage variable in tensor form is presented. In the procedure presented, a nonnegligible angle is assumed to exist between directions of principal stresses in the formation and in the natural-fractures-related damage tensor, and this difference in orientation is modeled by introducing local directions in the model. A damage-dependent permeability tensor in tabular form is then proposed. A second case scenario when the directions of principal stresses and natural fractures align is also analyzed. Numerical results of fracture distribution are presented for both cases, and differences can be seen from the computed contour of the damage variable. The results indicate tha... [more]

Chao-Ming Huang, Shin-Ju Chen, Sung-Pei Yang
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: gray wolf optimizer, parameter estimation, two-diode model
This study presents a parameter estimation method that uses an enhanced gray wolf optimizer (EGWO) to optimize the parameters for a two-diode photovoltaic (PV) power generation system. The proposed method consists of three stages. The first stage converts seven parameters for the two-diode model into 17 parameters for different environmental conditions, which provides more precise parameter estimation for the PV model. A PV power generation model is then established to represent the nonlinear relationship between inputs and outputs. The second stage involves a parameter sensitivity analysis and uses the overall effect method to remove the parameters that have smaller effect on the output. The final stage uses an enhanced GWO that is associated with measurement data to optimally estimate the parameters that are selected in the second stage. When the parameters are estimated, the predicted value for the PV power output is calculated for specific values of solar irradiation and module tem... [more]
District Heating of Buildings by Renewable Energy Using Thermochemical Heat Transmission
Robert E. Critoph, Angeles M. Rivero Pacho
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Absorption, heat district networks, heat pumping, thermochemical networks
The decarbonisation of building heating in urban areas can be achieved by heat pumps connected to district heating networks. These could be ‘third-generation’ (85/75 °C), ‘fourth-generation’ (50/40 or 50/25 °C) or ‘fifth-generation’ (near ambient) water loops. Networks using thermochemical reactions should require smaller pipe diameters than water systems and be more economic. This work investigates thermochemical transmission systems based on liquid−gas absorption intended for application in urban district heating networks where the main heat source might be a MW scale heat pump. Previous studies of absorption for heat transmission have concentrated on long distance (e.g., 50 km) transmission of heat or cold utilizing waste heat from power stations or similar but these are not directly applicable to our application which has not been investigated before. Absorbent-refrigerant pairs are modelled using water, methanol and acetone as absorbates. Thermodynamic properties are obtained from... [more]

Keywords: hardware and software implementation, hot water system, permafrost region, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar energy
Acceleration of energy transition will become the crucial social, political and technical challenge of the 21st century and will be largely associated with the growing use of renewable energy sources, including solar power. This study provides some experimental results of using solar hot water systems (HWS) embedded in apartment buildings located in the energy-efficient district called Zhatay in Yakutsk city, in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). The low annual solar fraction of HWS was found for 2019. It is equal to 0.2869 and caused by thermal energy loss from the hydraulic circuit during the nighttime. The study suggests increasing solar fraction in HWS and implementing a software and hardware system. The experimental evaluation of these studies was performed by testing a solar water heating pilot plant in Kaftanchikovo village in Tomsk Region (Western Siberia). As a result of HWS testing, it was found that the annual solar fraction can be significantly increased by preventing the hea... [more]

Keywords: field application, load transfers, power systems data, preprocessing, standard patterns
Data-based decisions have been being made in various fields due to the development of sensors throughout the industries. Likewise, in the power system field, data-based decisions are being made in various tasks, including establishing distribution investment plans. However, in order for it to have validity, it is necessary to get rid of abnormal data or data with low representativeness of a temporary nature. Although in general, such a series of processes are done by preprocessing, the those of power system data should be handled not only noise but also data fluctuations caused by temporary change in operations such as load transfers, as mentioned above. In addition, the characteristics of load data of distribution lines (DLs) can be different depending on the characteristics of the load itself, the characteristics of the connected DLs, and regional characteristics of each DLs, so it is essential to propose and apply the optimized preprocessing method for each DL. In this study, theref... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: comprehensive logistics service, intermodal loading unit, offering complexity, service complexity, transshipment terminal
Transshipment is the process of off-loading an intermodal loading unit (for example, different types of containers, semitrailers, swap-bodies, and so on) from one means of transport (for example, a vessel, a freight railcar, etc.) and loading it onto another. Such a process, as well as other logistics services related to loading units, may take place at a transshipment terminal, which is the intermediate node added to an intermodal transport network when combining two or more liner services that facilitate freight transport. Growing customer requirements affect transshipment terminal operations and contribute to the development of comprehensive logistics services. Terminal clients expect the delivery of complex services that often pose serious challenges to terminals providing these services. The specific decision-making tools are essential for facilitating the shaping of terminals’ complex service offerings. In this study, we investigated the issues connected to the complexity of logi... Keywords: impedance, lattice spacing, lithium-ion batteries, morphology
The study about the low-temperature performance of lithium-ion batteries (LIB) is of great significance at extreme temperatures, such as polar scientific research, space exploration, deep-sea exploration, military fields, and so on. In this study, normal devices and symmetrical devices were fabricated by ternary Li(Ni0.5Mn0.3Co0.2)O2 as cathode and graphite as anode at 25 and −20 °C. The results show that the specific discharge capacity of normal device is up to 120 mAh g−1 at 1 C and 25 °C. The specific capacity and energy density at 0.2 C and −20 °C are 106.05 mAh g−1 and 376.53 mWh g−1, respectively, which can reach 92.82% of that at 1 C and 25 °C. The value of activation energy Ea of the interface reaction of the LIB is calculated to be 63.72 kJ/mol by the Arrhenius equation. When the temperature dropped from 25 to −20 °C, the lattice spacing of Li1−x(Ni0.5Mn0.3Co0.2)O2 hardly changed, while the lattice spacing (002) of graphite reduces 0.00248 Å. March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery management system, cell inconsistency, maximum peak current estimation
In this study, an online cell screening algorithm is proposed to estimate the maximum peak current considering the cell inconsistencies in battery packs for electric vehicles. Based on the equivalent circuit model, the maximum peak current is mathematically defined, and the inconsistency parameters affecting the maximum peak current are analyzed. The proposed algorithm compares the inconsistency parameters of each cell and subsequently selects a cell or a group of cells whose voltage can exceed the allowable voltage range. The maximum peak current is determined based on the selected cells, while ensuring that all the cells are charged and discharged within the allowable voltage range. The feasibility and superiority of the proposed algorithm are verified through an experiment conducted on a commercially manufactured battery pack for electric vehicles.

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: heat treatment, lithium metal, native film, solid electrolyte interphase, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy
This study aims to improve the electrochemical properties of lithium metal for application as a negative electrode in high-energy-density batteries. Lithium metal was heat-treated at varying temperatures to modify the native and solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) films, which decreased the interfacial resistance between the lithium electrode and electrolyte, thereby improving the cycling performance. Moreover, the influence of the native and SEI films on lithium metals depended on the heat-treatment temperature. Accordingly, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was performed to investigate the chemical composition of the native and SEI films on the heat-treated lithium metals before and after immersion in an organic electrolyte solution. The XPS results revealed the high dependence of the chemical composition of the outer layer of the native and SEI films on the heat-treatment temperature, implying that the native and SEI films can be effectively modified by heat treatment.
