New Sensor for Medium- and High-Voltage Measurement
March 29, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: high voltage, measurement, medium voltage, power grid, sensor
Measurements of medium and high voltages in a power grid are normally performed with large and bulky voltage transformers or capacitive dividers. Besides installation problems, these devices operate in a relatively narrow frequency band, which limits their usability in modern systems that are saturated with power electronic devices. A sensor that can be installed directly on a wire and can operate without a galvanic connection to the ground may be used as an alternative voltage measurement device. This type of voltage sensor can complement current sensors installed on a wire, forming a complete power acquisition system. This paper presents such a sensor. Our sensor is built using two dielectric elements with different permeability coefficients. A finite element method simulation is used to estimate the parameters of a constructed sensor. Besides simulations, a laboratory model of a sensor was built and tested in a medium-voltage substation. Our results provide a proof of concept for th... [more]

Analysis of Current Transport Mechanism in AP-MOVPE Grown GaAsN p-i-n Solar Cell
March 29, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: carrier transport mechanism, defects, dilute nitrides, DLTS spectroscopy, GaAsN, J-V-T measurements, nitrogen interstitial, reciprocal lattice maps, recombination, solar cell, thermionic field emission
Basic knowledge about the factors and mechanisms affecting the performance of solar cells and their identification is essential when thinking of future improvements to the device. Within this paper, we investigated the current transport mechanism in GaAsN p-i-n solar cells grown with atmospheric pressure metal organic vapour phase epitaxy (AP-MOVPE). We examined the electro-optical and structural properties of a GaAsN solar cell epitaxial structure and correlated the results with temperature-dependent current-voltage measurements and deep level transient spectroscopy findings. The analysis of J-V-T measurements carried out in a wide temperature range allows for the determination of the dominant current transport mechanism in a GaAsN-based solar cell device and assign it a nitrogen interstitial defect, the presence of which was confirmed by DLTFS investigation.

A Coordinated Control of Offshore Wind Power and BESS to Provide Power System Flexibility
March 29, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery energy storage, charging/discharging control, coordinated control, flexibility, offshore wind power
The massive integration of variable renewable energy (VRE) in modern power systems is imposing several challenges; one of them is the increased need for balancing services. Coping with the high variability of the future generation mix with incredible high shares of VER, the power system requires developing and enabling sources of flexibility. This paper proposes and demonstrates a single layer control system for coordinating the steady-state operation of battery energy storage system (BESS) and wind power plants via multi-terminal high voltage direct current (HVDC). The proposed coordinated controller is a single layer controller on the top of the power converter-based technologies. Specifically, the coordinated controller uses the capabilities of the distributed battery energy storage systems (BESS) to store electricity when a logic function is fulfilled. The proposed approach has been implemented considering a control logic based on the power flow in the DC undersea cables and coordi... [more]

Does the Opening of High-Speed Railway Lines Reduce the Carbon Intensity of China’s Resource-Based Cities?
March 29, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: carbon intensity, China, difference-in-difference method, high-speed railway, resource-based city
The carbon intensity of China’s resource-based cities (RBCs) is much higher than the national average due to their relatively intensive mode of development. Low carbon transformation of RBCs is an important way to achieve the goal of reaching the carbon emissions peak in 2030. Based on the panel data from 116 RBCs in China from 2003 to 2018, this study takes the opening of high-speed railway (HSR) lines as a quasi-experiment, using a time-varying difference-in-difference (DID) model to empirically evaluate the impact of an HSR line on reducing the carbon intensity of RBCs. The results show that the opening of an HSR line can reduce the carbon intensity of RBCs, and this was still true after considering the possibility of problems with endogenous selection bias and after applying the relevant robustness tests. The opening of an HSR line is found to have a significant reducing effect on the carbon intensity of different types of RBC, and the decline in the carbon intensity of coal-based... [more]

The Network Topology Metrics Contributing to Local-Area Frequency Stability in Power System Networks
March 29, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: disturbance, frequency stability, graph laplacian, network topology, power system
The power system network topology influences the system frequency response to power imbalance disturbances. Here, the objective is to find the network metric(s) contributing to frequency transient stability. The graph Laplacians of six 4-node network topologies are analysed using Spectral Graph Theory. For homogeneous network connections, we show that the node degree measure indicates node robustness. Based on these analytical results, the investigation expands to a 10-node network topology consisting of two clusters, which provide further insight into the spectral results. The research then involves a simulation of a power imbalance disturbance on three 20-node networks with different topologies based on node degree, where we link the node degree measure to imbalance disturbance propagation through Wave Theory. The results provide an intuitive understanding of the impact of network topology on power system frequency stability. The analytical and simulation results indicate that a node... [more]

Integrated Optimal Design of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator for Smart Wind Turbine Using Genetic Algorithm
March 29, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: direct drive permanent magnet synchronous generator, finite element analysis, optimization and genetic algorithm, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, small wind turbine, wind energy
In recent years, the investment in the wind energy sector has increased in the context of producing green electricity and saving the environment. The installation of small wind turbines (SWTs) represents an actual strategy for meeting energy needs for off-grid systems and certain specialized applications. SWTs are more expensive per kilowatt installed as compared to large-scale wind turbines. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to produce an economical technology for the wind power market offering low-cost SWTs. The idea consists of considering a simple structure of the wind turbine using direct-drive permanent magnet synchronous generator (DDPMSG). DDPMSGs are the most useful machines in the wind energy field thanks to several advantages, such as elimination of noise and maintenance cost due to suppression of the gearbox and absence of the rotor circuit excitation barriers by the presence of the permanent magnets (PMs). Their major downside is the high cost of active materi... [more]

March 29, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: alkaline electrolysis, Biomass, CCU, green methanol, oxyfuel, power-to-X, renewables
A revolution of the global energy industry is without an alternative to solving the climate crisis. However, renewable energy sources typically show significant seasonal and daily fluctuations. This paper provides a system concept model of a decentralized power-to-green methanol plant consisting of a biomass heating plant with a thermal input of 20 MWth. (oxyfuel or air mode), a CO2 processing unit (DeOxo reactor or MEA absorption), an alkaline electrolyzer, a methanol synthesis unit, an air separation unit and a wind park. Applying oxyfuel combustion has the potential to directly utilize O2 generated by the electrolyzer, which was analyzed by varying critical model parameters. A major objective was to determine whether applying oxyfuel combustion has a positive impact on the plant’s power-to-liquid (PtL) efficiency rate. For cases utilizing more than 70% of CO2 generated by the combustion, the oxyfuel’s O2 demand is fully covered by the electrolyzer, making oxyfuel a viable option for... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, engineering-procurement-construction (EPC), information retrieval, invitation-to-bid (ITB) document, Machine Learning, named-entity recognition (NER), natural language processing (NLP), phrasematcher, Python, spaCy, text mining
Contractors responsible for the whole execution of engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) projects are exposed to multiple risks due to various unbalanced contracting methods such as lump-sum turn-key and low-bid selection. Although systematic risk management approaches are required to prevent unexpected damage to the EPC contractors in practice, there were no comprehensive digital toolboxes for identifying and managing risk provisions for ITB and contract documents. This study describes two core modules, Critical Risk Check (CRC) and Term Frequency Analysis (TFA), developed as a digital EPC contract risk analysis tool for contractors, using artificial intelligence and text-mining techniques. The CRC module automatically extracts risk-involved clauses in the EPC ITB and contracts by the phrase-matcher technique. A machine learning model was built in the TFA module for contractual risk extraction by using the named-entity recognition (NER) method. The risk-involved clauses col... [more]

Frequency Scan−Based Mitigation Approach of Subsynchronous Control Interaction in Type-3 Wind Turbines
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: doubly fed induction generator, power system transients, series compensation, subsynchronous control interaction, wind farms
Integration of wind energy resources into the grid creates several challenges for power system dynamics. More specifically, Type-3 wind turbines are susceptible to subsynchronous control interactions (SSCIs) when they become radially connected to a series-compensated transmission line. SSCIs can cause disruptions in power generation and can result in significant damage to wind farm (WF) components and equipment. This paper proposes an approach to mitigate SSCIs using an online frequency scan, with optimized phase angles of voltage harmonic injection to maintain steady-state operation, to modify the controllers or the operating conditions of the wind turbine. The proposed strategy is simulated in PSCAD/EMTDC software on the IEEE second benchmark model for subsynchronous resonance. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of this strategy by ensuring oscillations do not grow.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: low head axial-flow turbine, overtopping, Wave Energy
Overtopping-type wave power conversion devices represent one of the most promising technology to combine reliability and competitively priced electricity supplies from waves. While satisfactory hydraulic and structural performance have been achieved, the selection of the hydraulic turbines and their regulation is a complex process due to the very low head and a variable flow rate in the overtopping breakwater set-ups. Based on the experience acquired on the first Overtopping BReakwater for Energy Conversion (OBREC) prototype, operating since 2016, an activity has been carried out to select the most appropriate turbine dimension and control strategy for such applications. An example of this multivariable approach is provided and illustrated through a case study in the San Antonio Port, along the central coast of Chile. In this site the deployment of a breakwater equipped with OBREC modules is specifically investigated. Axial-flow turbines of different runner diameter are compared, propo... [more]

Comprehensive Review on Smart Techniques for Estimation of State of Health for Battery Management System Application
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Battery Management System, data driven techniques, hybrid electric vehicles, Li ion, SEI layer, SOH
Electric Vehicles (EV) and Hybrid EV (HEV) use Lithium (Li) ion battery packs to drive them. These battery packs possess high specific density and low discharge rates. However, some of the limitations of such Li ion batteries are sensitivity to high temperature and health degradation over long usage. The Battery Management System (BMS) protects the battery against overvoltage, overcurrent etc., and monitors the State of Charge (SOC) and the State of Health (SOH). SOH is a complex phenomenon dealing with the effects related to aging of the battery such as the increase in the internal resistance and decrease in the capacity due to unwanted side reactions. The battery life can be extended by estimating the SOH accurately. In this paper, an extensive review on the effects of aging of the battery on the electrodes, effects of Solid Electrolyte Interface (SEI) deposition layer on the battery and the various techniques used for estimation of SOH are presented. March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: chemical reactor model, hydrodearomatisation, hydrodesulphurisation, hydrotreating, industrial process
Over the years, the hydrotreating process has been considerably improved in order to facilitate the production of environmentally friendly diesel fuels by reducing sulphur and aromatics concentrations, as mandated by contemporary emissions regulations. In this study, different kinetic models for the hydrodearomatisation reaction and the influence of reaction rate on performance of the industrial trickle bed reactor for hydrotreating of gas oil and light cycle oil fractions were analysed. The impact on reactor temperature, catalyst wetting efficiency, and conversion of sulphur and aromatics were determined. The results of simulations were compared with experimental data from an industrial test run and the best model for the observed process is proposed. Reactor performance and overall efficiency of the process is strongly dependent on the kinetics of hydrodearomatisaton with respect to aromatics conversion but even more so with respect to the temperature increase in the reactor, which a... Keywords: assessment, comprehensive evaluation function, exponential degradation model, prediction, self-organizing feature map, wind turbines
Vibration signals contain abundant information that reflects the health status of wind turbine high-speed shaft bearings ((HSSBs). Accurate health assessment and remaining useful life (RUL) prediction are the keys to the scientific maintenance of wind turbines. In this paper, a method based on the combination of a comprehensive evaluation function and a self-organizing feature map (SOM) network is proposed to construct a health indicator (HI) curve to characterizes the health state of HSSBs. Considering the difficulty in obtaining life cycle data of similar equipment in a short time, the exponential degradation model is selected as the degradation trajectory of HSSBs on the basis of the constructed HI curve, the Bayesian update model, and the expectation−maximization (EM) algorithm are used to predict the RUL of HSSBs. First, the time domain, frequency domain, and time−frequency domain degradation features of HSSBs are extracted. Second, a comprehensive evaluation function is construct... [more]

Evaluating the Context-Dependent Total-Factor Energy Efficiency of Counties and Cities in Taiwan
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: context-dependent data envelopment analysis (CD-DEA), directional distance function (DDF), frontier level, quasi-fixed inputs, total-factor energy efficiency (TFEE)
This paper applies the context-dependent total-factor energy efficiency (CD-TFEE) to determine the multi-layer disaggregate energy efficiency frontiers of twenty administrative regions in Taiwan for the year of 2016. The CD-TFEE overcomes the shortcoming of conventional TFEE index that TFEE is not able to find the “closest target” for each inefficient region in the short run. Furthermore, the CD-TFEE scores here deal with four types of energy inputs (electricity for production, electricity for household and non-household lighting, diesel sales, and gasoline sales), illustrating that multi-layer TFEE frontiers for each energy input in the case of Taiwan can be computed. Empirical results indicate that there are three levels of TFEE frontiers for electricity for production and four levels for other types of energy inputs. In addition, New Taipei City, Taipei City, Keelung City, and Penghu County are at the top level of TFEE frontier for all four energy inputs. This paper also demonstrate... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combustion, flame, injection strategy, optical engine, polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers
Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (PODE) are a newly appeared promising oxygenated alternative that can greatly reduce soot emissions of diesel engines. The combustion characteristics of the PODE and diesel blends (the blending ratios of PODE are 0%, 20%, 50% and 100% by volume, respectively) are investigated based on an optical engine under the injection timings of 6, 9, 12 and 15-degree crank angles before top dead center and injection pressures of 100 MPa, 120 MPa and 140 MPa in this study. The results show that both the ignition delay and combustion duration of the fuels decrease with the increasing of PODE ratio in the blends. However, in the case of the fuel supply of the optical engine being fixed, the heat release rate, cylinder pressure and temperature of the blend fuels decrease with the PODE addition due to the low lower heating value of PODE. The addition of PODE in diesel can significantly reduce the integrated natural flame luminosity and the soot formation under all injec... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Concentrating Photovoltaic System, experimental analysis, Fresnel lens, optical and energy comparison, point-focus configuration, spherical mirror
Since there are not standard configurations of the Concentrating Photovoltaic (CPV) systems, several types of optics are designed and analyzed. In this paper, the optical performances of a spherical mirror and a commonly used Fresnel lens of the same diameter are compared, highlighting their impact on the CPV system energy performance. First, the absolute and percentual variation trends of optical concentration factor and optical efficiency as function of the distance between each optical system and receiver are analyzed. The concentration levels obtained by means of the spherical mirror are much higher than the Fresnel lens, with maximum values of optical efficiency equal to 72.8% and 24.1%, respectively. The analysis of the concentration reduction due to a solar-tracking failure has also allowed the estimation of the acceptance angle, thus observing that the spherical mirror requires a less accurate solar tracker with respect to the Fresnel lens, especially if a secondary optics is a... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: property tax, real estate tax, renewable energy source in Poland, taxation
(1) Background—The aim of this paper was to indicate whether the taxation of facilities related to renewable or low-emission energy differed significantly from that of facilities generating electricity from coal. (2) Methods—The research was conducted using a descriptive method, and because of the legal nature of the article, a crucial role was played by the dogmatic method. (3) Results—The thesis according to which only the “construction part” is subject to the property tax is the result of many years of disputes between the taxpayers and the tax authorities. In practice, it is difficult to compare the tax burden on assets related to coal and low-emission power generation because of the construction of the tax base in Polish property tax law. Most often, however, the tax burden on assets, which is calculated in the context of the amount of energy produced, tends to favour coal-fired power generation. (4) Conclusion: The property tax regulations in Poland treat the assets used for ener... [more]

Keywords: engine load, fuel evaporation, idling, mid-wave infrared (MWIR)
Pre-catalyst engine emissions and detrimental injector deposits have been widely associated with the near-nozzle fluid dynamics during and after the injection events. Although the heating and evaporation of fuel films on the nozzle surface directly affects some of these processes, there are no experimental data for the transient evolution of nozzle surface temperature during typical engine conditions. In order to address this gap in knowledge, we present a non-intrusive approach for the full-cycle time resolved measurement of the surface temperature of production nozzles in an optical engine. A mid-wave infrared high-speed camera was calibrated against controlled conditions, both out of engine and in-engine to account for non-ideal in surface emissivity and optical transmissivity.
