April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CCHP microgrid, comprehensive value, electrical energy storage, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, robust optimization
The combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) microgrid system is good for energy gradient utility. At the same time, it can promote the renewable energy (RE) consumption and abate environmental pollution. In a CCHP microgrid system, the electrical energy storage (EES), which can storage and release electrical energy, plays an indispensable role. A robust optimization model of the CCHP microgrid participating in power market transaction is constructed to calculate the CCHP microgrid operation cost in 4 cases. The results show that the EES can significantly reduce the cost of the CCHP microgrid by 13.21%, compared with 8.36% in Group 1 without renewable energy. The EES can reduce the reserved capacity of micro gas turbine units to deal with the precariousness of RE generation and then reduce the CCHP microgrid operation cost by reducing the purchase of energy from the power grid and arbitrage. Finally, the calculation method of comprehensive value of the EES is constructed. The compre... [more]

Keywords: fault-tolerant, markov model, multistring converter, photovoltaic, reliability
In photovoltaic (PV) systems, the reliability of the system components, especially the power converters, is a major concern in obtaining cost effective solutions. In order to guarantee service continuity in the case of failure of elements of the PV converter, in particular, semiconductor switching devices, a solution is to design power converter with fault-tolerance capability. This can be realized by aggregating hardware redundancy on an existing converter, providing the possibility of replacement of faulty elements. This paper evaluates the reliability of a fault-tolerant power electronics converter for PV multistring application. The considered fault-tolerant design includes a single redundant switching leg, which is used in order to reconfigure the structure in case of a switch failure either on DC-AC or DC-DC stages. This paper details the reliability estimation of the considered PV multistring fault-tolerant converter. Furthermore, a comparison with a conventional structure witho... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Chinese market, cost economy, fuel cell, hydrogen energy, transportation field
China has become a major market for hydrogen used in fuel cells in the transportation field. It is key to control the cost of hydrogen to open up the Chinese market. The development status and trends of China’s hydrogen fuel industry chain were researched. A hydrogen energy cost model was established in this paper from five aspects: raw material cost, fixed cost of production, hydrogen purification cost, carbon trading cost, and transportation cost. The economic analysis of hydrogen was applied to hydrogen transported in the form of high-pressure hydrogen gas or cryogenic liquid hydrogen and produced by natural gas, coal, and electrolysis of water. It was found that the cost of hydrogen from natural gas and coal is currently lower, while it is greatly affected by the hydrogen purification cost and the carbon trading price. Considering the impact of future production technologies, raw material costs, and rising requirements for sustainable energy development on the hydrogen energy cost,... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: acetone-butanol-ethanol mixture, biodiesel, emissions, spray visualization
This study investigates the impact of an acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) mixture on spray parameters, engine performance and emission levels of neat cottonseed biodiesel and neat diesel blends. The spray test was carried out using a high-speed camera, and the engine test was conducted on a variable compression diesel engine. Adding an ABE blend can increase the spray penetration of both neat biodiesel and diesel due to the low viscosity and surface tension, thereby enhancing the vaporization rate and combustion efficiency. A maximum in-cylinder pressure value was recorded for the ABE-diesel blend. The brake power (BP) of all ABE blends was slightly reduced due to the low heating values of ABE blends. Exhaust gas temperature (EGT), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions were also reduced with the addition of the ABE blend to neat diesel and biodiesel by 14−17%, 11−13% and 25−54%, respectively, compared to neat diesel. Unburnt hydrocarbon (UHC) emissions were reduced with... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: back flashover, breakeven costs, dips, earthing profiles, lightning surge arrester, tower footing resistance
Earthing and protective devices such as line surge arrestors (LSAs) play an important role in areas with high lightning occurrence for overhead HVAC lines’ performance. A lightning stroke of high magnitude can lead to back flash-overs, and the resultant power surge on the phase conductor can cause instigate the line breaker operating to extinguish the power surge. This operation of the protective devices leads to consumer interruptions on the network, a loss of production, and negatively affects the economy. Studies have shown that reducing an earthing system’s values, which itself is costly, may not be sufficient to prevent back flashover and the associated customer production cost loss. A code was developed to determine the possibility of back flashover and the cost of various earthing schemes utilizing the MATLAB software analysis tool. This paper determines the possibility of a back flashover for various combinations of lightning strokes and earthing profiles. Tower Footing Resista... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CO2 emissions, electric vehicles, low-carbon, PLEXOS, power system flexibility, solar plants, wind plants
One of the major tools for the implementation of low carbon strategy goals is increasing the penetration of renewable sources, which are mostly intermittent in nature, into the power system that also increases the needs for additional storage and flexibility capacity in the system. Among other possible solutions, one very most promising tool is the significant electrification of the transport sector. A slightly modified and already verified power system model used for Croatian low-carbon strategy was used here. The PLEXOS software was used to model the Croatian power system by simulating different scenarios. Two scenarios were examined: with and without electric vehicles. This research aimed to evaluate the total decrease in CO2 emissions from both the transport and power sectors due to the increased number of electrical vehicles. The analysis of the Croatian power system was used to assess the flexibility potential of such a large number of electrical vehicles on power system flexibil... [more]

Keywords: electric ferries, electrification, energy storage systems, green energy, maritime industry
The electrification of vessels/ferries for green transformation requires onboard electrical energy storage as well as an energy supply network in the port area. In this context, a lot of efforts have been made in the last decade that have been reviewed in such a way that only a single aspect of the green transformation challenge is highlighted. Consequently, the objective of this research is to develop knowledge by examining the current state of affairs and provide, accordingly, abstract implementation guidelines for green transformation through vessel/ferry electrification. A comprehensive study on the electrification of vessels, in industry as well as in academia, is performed. Based on the data collected through a systematic study, a comparison of various pure electric and hybrid vessels in terms of certain performance attributes, such as battery capacity, passenger and cargo capacities, and size (length) of the vessel, is performed. Moreover, the distribution of vessels according t... [more]

Keywords: biogas production, conservation biomass, Energy Efficiency, GHG emissions, wetlands
We conducted the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) of energy production from biogas for maize and three types of wetland biomass: reed Phragmites australis, sedges Carex elata, and Carex gracilis, and “grassy vegetation” of wet meadows (WM). Biogas energy produced from maize reached over 90 GJ ha−1, which was more than four times higher than that gained from wetland biomass. However, an estimation of energy efficiency (EE) calculated as a ratio of energy input to the energy produced in a biogas plant showed that the wet fermentation (WF) of maize was similar to the values obtained for dry fermentation (DF) of sedge biomass (~0.30 GJ GJ−1). The greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions released during preparation of the feedstock and operation of the biogas plant were 150 g CO2 eq. kWhel.−1 for DF of sedges and 262 g CO2 eq. kWhel.−1 for WF of Phragmites. Compared to the prevailing coal-based power generation in Central Europe, anaerobic digestion (AD) of wetland biomass could contribute to a reduction... [more]

Keywords: aerophytic algae, biodiesel, GC–MS
The microscopic alga Coccomyxa subglobosa, collected from the Głowoniowa Nyża Cave (Tatra Mountains, Poland), is a source of fatty acids (FAs) that could be used for biodiesel production. FAs from subaerial algae have unlimited availability because of the ubiquity of algae in nature. Algal culture was carried out under laboratory conditions and algal biomass was measured during growth phase, resulting in 5 g of dry weight (32% oil). The fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) profile was analyzed by means of gas chromatography−mass spectrometry (GC−MS). The presence of lipids and chloroplasts in C. subglobosa was demonstrated using GC−MS and confocal laser microscopy. Naturally occurring FAMEs contained C12−C24 compounds, and methyl palmitate (28.5%) and methyl stearate (45%) were the predominant lipid species. Aerophytic algae could be an important component of biodiesel production, as they are omnipresent and environmentally friendly, contain more methyl esters than seaweed, and can be easily... [more]

Keywords: electric hybrid systems, electric marine propulsion, electric ships, electric vehicles
The article presents issues related to the possibility of using electric and hybrid systems to drive Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull (SWATH) vessels. Ships of this type have significantly less sway and heave compared to monohull crafts and catamarans. Thanks to the synergistic combination of the hydrodynamic properties of SWATH hull and electric drive systems, they can be an interesting proposition for use in transport of passengers and offshore wind farms service crews. The paper presents comparative test results of an electric drive system powered by Hybrid Energy Storage System, which are a combination of systems consisting of batteries (BAT), hydrogen fuel cells (FC) and diesel generators (D). For the presented configurations of propulsion systems, mathematical models taking into account the hydrodynamic resistance of the hull of the vessel have been developed and implemented in the Modelica simulation environment. The tests carried out for various configurations of the drive syste... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: micro-cogeneration, parametric analysis, PVT, thermal storage tank, TRNSYS
Photovoltaic-thermal panels are hybrid systems that combine the two types of conventional solar energy technologies (photovoltaic and thermal panels) and simultaneously generate both thermal and electrical energy in a micro-cogeneration system. Like any co-generation system, there is an optimal balance that can be achieved between the thermal and electrical energy produced. For this reason, it is important to establish the relationship and inter-connection between the two. Limited research is available on the cogeneration interaction in a PVT system, so the novelty of this article lies in the consideration of the entire energy system connected to the PVT panel, including the storage tank and the consumer demand curve, and the investigation of the thermal parametric variation. This study analyses the impact of the variation of some thermal parameters of a domestic hot water tank on the electrical efficiency of a photovoltaic-thermal panel. Keywords: activation time, discharge time, multi-objective genetic algorithm, thermal batteries
Activation time and discharge time are important criteria for the performance of thermal batteries. In this work a heat transfer analysis is carried out on the working process of thermal batteries. The effects of the thicknesses of heat pellets which are divided into three groups and that of the thickness of insulation layers on activation time and discharge time of thermal batteries are numerically studied using Fluent 15.0 when the sum of the thickness of heating plates and insulation layers remain unchanged. According to the numerical results, the optimal geometric parameters are obtained by using multi-objective genetic algorithm. The results show that the activation time is mainly determined by the thickness of the bottom heat pellet, while the discharge time is determined by the thickness of the heat pellets and that of the insulation layers. The discharge time of the optimized thermal battery is increased by 4.08%, and the activation time is increased by 1.23%.

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbonization, change in volume, freezing, plasticization, pyrolysis, storage
The course of thermal behavior of a fresh bituminous high-volatile coal during carbonization and pyrolysis was compared to that of this coal thawed after storage. The research was carried out using the following techniques: X-raying, thermogravimetry/Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (TG/FT-IR), extraction, Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopes (DRIFT), Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR), and SEM. The increase in range of the viscous-liquid state and a decrease in temperature of its appearance were stated along with the formation of a more compact residue at the re-solidification stagtablee for the thawed coal during its carbonization. There is a fourfold reduction in the charge volume. The leakage of bitumen that contains 87 At % of C atoms from swollen grains and a fourfold increase in the yield of the material extracted from these grains are the proof of a greater plasticization of thawed coal. During the pyrolysis of thawed coal, the yield in volatile p... [more]

Keywords: doubly fed induction generator, fuzzy logic controller, Genetic Algorithm, maximum power point tracking, proportional integral, variable speed wind turbine
This paper is interested in studying a system consisting of a wind turbine operating at variable wind speeds, and a two-feed asynchronous machine (DFIG) connected to the grid by a stator and fed by a transducer at the side of the rotor. The conductors are separately controlled for active and reactive power flow between the stator (DFIG) and the grid. The proposed controllers generate reference voltages for the rotor to ensure that the active and reactive power reaches the required reference values, to ensure effective tracking of the optimum operating point and to obtain the maximum electrical power output. Dynamic analysis of the system is performed under variable wind speeds. This analysis is based on active and reactive energy control. The new work in this paper is to introduce theories of genetic algorithms into the control strategy used in the switching chain of wind turbines in order to improve performance and efficiency. Keywords: anthracite, creep, improved steady−creep rate method, long−term strength, test
Coal pillars from old mines undergo creep, a type of time−dependent deformation. Research on underground engineering stability of coal mines has increasingly focused on long−term strength as an important mechanical index of the creep characteristics of coal pillars. This study performed conventional triaxial compression and triaxial creep tests of anthracite under different confining pressures. The creep law of anthracite and the long−term strength of anthracite was studied according to the test results. The test results demonstrated the following: (1) The conventional elastic modulus and peak strain of anthracite increased exponentially with the confining pressure. (2) Under low stress levels, anthracite exhibited only instantaneous deformation and attenuation creep. In contrast, anthracite exhibited instantaneous deformation, attenuation creep, and steady creep under high stress levels; accelerated creep occurred until failure when the stress reached a particular value. Keywords: continuous casting slab, FE model, inclusion migration, surface defect, ultralow carbon steel
Slivers on the surface of rolled plates, which are serious defects for interstitial-free (IF) steel, occur mainly as a result of inclusions in continuous casting (CC) slabs. It is, therefore, important to study inclusions in CC slabs in terms of their migration towards the surface during hot rolling. To investigate inclusion migration during the hot rolling of ultralow carbon steel, a 3D numerical model was constructed using the finite element method. The positions of the inclusions in the surface layer of an IF steel slab (50 mm) were tracked during hot rolling using a node-tracking method. Furthermore, the study analyzed the effects of scarfing on inclusion migration during hot rolling and inclusion distribution in a hot-rolled plate. During the hot-rolling process, inclusions in the wide faces of the intermediate slab gradually migrated to the surface of the intermediate slab. Owing to a thickness reduction, accumulation areas of inclusions were finally generated at the edge of the... [more]

Hydrogen liquefaction is an essential section for efficient storage and transportation of hydrogen energy. Both the Claude cycle and Brayton refrigeration cycle are available for large-scale hydrogen liquefaction systems. Two large-scale hydrogen liquefiers with the liquefaction capacity of 120 t/d based on the Brayton refrigeration cycle and the Claude cycle, respectively, are analyzed and compared in this study. Sensitivity analysis is used to optimize the parameters of two liquefaction systems in HYSYS. According to the results, the exergy loss and specific energy consumption of the Claude liquefier are 18.98 MW and 5.62 kWh/kgLH, which are 6.6% and 4.4% less than those of the Brayton liquefier, respectively. Exergy analysis reveals the exergy loss of compression and expansion systems in the Claude liquefier is less than that of the Brayton liquefier, while the exergy loss of the throttle valve in the Claude liquefier is more notable. In addition, the molar flow rate of hydrogen use... [more]

Keywords: chemical looping, economic analysis, oil shale-to-liquid fuels, solid heat carrier moving bed with internals, technical analysis
The solid heat carrier moving bed with internals is an advanced oil shale retorting technology. However, the retorting gas produced by pyrolysis is generally used as fuel gas. The content of CO, H2, and CH4 in the retorting gas is high, and direct combustion leads to resource waste and environmental pollution. In addition, heteroatomic sulfur and nitrogen, as well as unsaturated hydrocarbons, reduce the quality of shale oil. To solve these problems, this paper proposed a chemical looping enhanced oil shale-to-liquid fuels (CLeSTL) process. The chemical looping hydrogen production technology is applied to convert retorting gas to hydrogen, and the hydrogen produced is used for shale oil hydrogenation to improve the oil quality. In this paper, the new process is modeled and simulated; then technoeconomic analysis is carried out. Technical analysis shows that shale oil yield is increased from 65% to 95.7% and the yield of light fraction is increased from 20% to 64%−83%. Economic analysis... [more]

Keywords: capital cost target, energy recovery, general method, Heat Exchanger Network, pinch analysis, spaghetti structure
Pinch analysis is vital in optimizing heat exchanger networks (HENs). Targeting methods are used when determining cost effectiveness with pinch analysis. However, the existing targeting methods for the capital cost of HEN are not suitable for wide application scenarios. Therefore, we developed a high-accuracy general capital-cost-targeting method. It is built on a final structure that was evolved from the spaghetti structure of HEN through four loop elimination stages. This structure helps to reduce the prediction deviation of the method. To achieve high adaptability while establishing this method, we considered the different heat exchanger cost categories, different cost laws for one stream pair, and area limitations of heat exchangers that may be encountered in practice. In addition, allowing streams to use individual temperature difference contributions enhances the method’s predictive capacity. The potential defects of the method found in numerical experiments and case studies were... [more]

Sludge pyrolysis is a promising method for treating excess sludge as a by-product of municipal sewage plants, allowing for energy self-sufficiency and resource recovery. Before sludge pyrolysis begins, a few conditioning agents are added to the sludge that promote sludge dewatering. Potassium ferrate (K2FeO4) is applied as a conditioning agent with both cracking and flocculation effects, but the effects of K2FeO4 on the release characteristics of nitrogen, sulfur, and chlorine during sludge pyrolysis have not been elucidated. In this study, we analyzed the sludge pyrolysis characteristics and chemical state changes of N, S, and Cl contaminants in the dewatered sludge after K2FeO4 conditioning before and after pyrolysis. Further, the release characteristics of condensable/noncondensable gases during pyrolysis were assessed using thermogravimetric mass spectrometry (TG-MS) and pyrolysis−gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) analyses before and after conditioning. We found that... [more]
