The Degree of Polymerization in a Prediction Model of Insulating Paper and the Remaining Life of Power Transformers
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: correlation, degree of polymerization, furfuraldehyde, insulating paper, multiple linear regression, power transformers
The aging of power transformers causes several defects and damages in the insulating system, especially in the insulating paper. The degradation of the insulating paper generates dissolved gases in the insulating oil, which are measured by gas chromatography and used as an indicator of the insulation status. The state of the insulating paper can be identified based on the degree of polymerization (DP) measurement. In some cases, when the measurement of DP is difficult, estimating DP can be accomplished through gathering information about some of the testing parameters, such as the dissolved gases (DGA), breakdown voltage (BDV), oil interfacial tension (IF), oil acidity (ACI), moisture content (MC), oil color (OC), dielectric loss (Tan δ), and furans concentration specifically (2-furfuraldhyde (FA)). The statistical tools (correlation and multiple linear regression), based on 131 transformer samples, can be used to build a relation linking DP and one or more of the previous parameters t... [more]

Double-Layer Metal Foams for Further Heat Transfer Enhancement in a Channel: An Analytical Study
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: analytical solution, forced convection heat transfer, heat transfer enhancement, porous media
A local thermal non-equilibrium analysis of heat and fluid flow in a channel fully filled with aluminum foam is performed for three cases: (a) pore density of 5 PPI (pore per inch), (b) pore density of 40 PPI, and (c) two different layers of 5 and 40 PPI. The dimensionless forms of fully developed heat and fluid flow equations for the fluid phase and heat conduction equation for the solid phase are solved analytically. The effects of interfacial heat transfer coefficient and thermal dispersion conductivity are considered. Analytical expressions for temperature profile of solid and fluid phases, and also the channel Nusselt number (NuH) are obtained. The obtained results are discussed in terms of the channel-based Reynolds number (ReH) changing from 10 to 2000, and thickness ratio between the channel height and sublayers. The Nusselt number of the channel with 40 PPI is always greater than that of the 5 PPI channel. It is also greater than the channel with two-layer aluminum foams until... [more]

Spectacular Enhancement of the Thermal and Photochemical Stability of MAPbI3 Perovskite Films Using Functionalized Tetraazaadamantane as a Molecular Modifier
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: complex lead halides, molecular additives, molecular modifiers, perovskite solar cells, photostability, thermal stability
Perovskite solar cells represent a highly promising third-generation photovoltaic technology. However, their practical implementation is hindered by low device operational stability, mostly related to facile degradation of the absorber materials under exposure to light and elevated temperatures. Improving the intrinsic stability of complex lead halides is a big scientific challenge, which might be addressed using various “molecular modifiers”. These modifiers are usually represented by some additives undergoing strong interactions with the perovskite absorber material, resulting in enhanced solar cell efficiency and/or operational stability. Herein, we present a derivative of 1,4,6,10-tetraazaadamantane, NAdCl, as a promising molecular modifier for lead halide perovskites. NAdCl spectacularly improved both the thermal and photochemical stability of methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) films and, most importantly, prevented the formation of metallic lead Pb0 as a photolysis product. Dynamic Prioritization of Functions during Real-Time Multi-Use Operation of Battery Energy Storage Systems
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery energy storage system, converter control, fast reserve, frequency containment reserve, island operation, multi-use operation, synthetic inertia, value stacking, voltage control
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) based on Li-Ion technology are considered to be one of the providers of services in the future power system. Although prices for Li-Ion batteries are falling continuously, it is still difficult to achieve profitability from a single service today. Multi-use operation of BESS in order to reach a so-called “value-stacking” of services therefore is a hotly debated topic in literature, since such an operation holds the potential to increase profitability dramatically. The multi-use operation of a BESS can be divided into two parts: the operational planning phase and the real-time operation. While the operational planning phase has been examined in many studies, there seems to be a lack of discussion for the real-time operation. This paper therefore tries to address the topic of the real-time operation in more detail. For this reason, this paper discusses concepts for implementing a real-time multi-use operation and introduces the novel concept of dynam... [more]

Effect of Soiling on Solar Photovoltaic Performance under Desert Climatic Conditions
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: building integrated photovoltaics, dust, photovoltaic, soiling, solar energy
The solar irradiation at the gulf Arabia is considered one of the highest in the world. However, this region is classified as a desert with high dust accumulation. Thus, the objective of this study is to analyze the effect of soiling and the photovoltaic (PV) tilt angle on the performance of 2.0 MWp of car park PV plant in Oman. Experimental measurements were taken and a model was developed for simulation. The power generation by the cleaned PV system was measured as 1460 kW around noon. After one week of operation, the power production (at the same irradiance level) reduced to 1390 kW due to soiling. It further reduced to 1196 kW and 904 kW after three and five weeks of operation, respectively. The results also show that a soiling-percentage of 7.5% reduced the monthly electricity generation (307 MWh) by 5.6% and a soiling-percentage of 12.5% reduced the generation by 10.8%. Furthermore, the increase in tilt is not recommended due to the duo-pitch canopy effect of the car park where t... [more]

Investigation on the Operating Conditions of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Based on Constant Voltage Cold Start Mode
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cold start, constant voltage mode, operating conditions, proton exchange membrane fuel cell
The cold start property is one of the main factors restricting the fuel cell application in the automotive field. The constant voltage cold start method of the fuel cell works under low start voltage and produces high heat, which can shorten the start-up time of the fuel cell at low temperature and has the opportunity to be applied to fuel cell vehicles. Meanwhile, in the constant voltage cold start mode, the fuel cell needs to operate under a large current, and more water is generated during the start-up process. Thus, the optimization of operating conditions for the constant voltage cold start is particularly important. However, there are relatively few studies on the optimization of operating conditions for the constant voltage cold start with a single-cell voltage less than 0.3 V. In this work, the cold start experiment of the fuel cell with constant voltage is carried out. According to the cold start experiment, the different cold start voltage, back-pressure, and the inlet flow r... [more]

100% Renewable Energy Scenarios for North America—Spatial Distribution and Network Constraints
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: 100 percent renewable energies, capacity expansion modeling, electricity market integration
The urgency to combat climate change and the widely distributed, increasingly competitive renewable resources in North America are strong arguments to explore scenarios for a renewable energy supply in the region. While the current power system of North America is heavily dependent on fossil fuels, namely natural gas, coal and oil, and some nuclear power plants, some current policies at the state level, and future federal policies are likely to push the share of different renewable sources available in Mexico, the U.S., and Canada. This paper explores three scenarios for a renewable energy supply, using a bottom-up energy system model with a high level of spatial and time granularity. The scenarios span the extremes with respect to connecting infrastructure: while one scenario only looks at state-level supply and demand, without interconnections, the other extreme scenario allows cross-continental network investments. The model results indicate that the North American continent (a) has... [more]

Assessment of Offshore Wave Energy Resources in Taiwan Using Long-Term Dynamically Downscaled Winds from a Third-Generation Reanalysis Product
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dynamical downscaling, reanalysis product, Taiwanese waters, wave energy resource, WRF model
In this study, long-term wind fields during 1991−2010 from the Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR) were dynamically downscaled over Taiwan and its offshore islands at a 5 km horizontal resolution using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. Simulations of the 10 m (above sea level) dynamically downscaled winds served as the atmospheric forcing for driving a fully coupled wave-circulation model. The sea states of the waters surrounding Taiwan during 1991−2010 were hindcasted to evaluate the offshore wave energy resources and optimal wave energy hotspots. This study reveals that the southeastern offshore waters of Taiwan and the Central Taiwan Strait exhibited the highest mean wave power density (WPD), exceeding 20 kW/m. The annual mean WPD, incidence of the hourly WPD greater than or equal to 4 kW/m, monthly variability index and coefficient of variation of the WPD indicated that the sea areas located between Green Island and Orchid Island (OH_1), southeast of Orchid Is... Study on Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical Coupling and the Stability of a Geothermal Wellbore Structure
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cold water injection, geothermal wellbore structure, integrity, thermo-hydro-mechanical coupling
For processes such as water injection in deep geothermal production, heat transfer and fluid flow are coupled and affect one another, which leads to numerous challenges in wellbore structure safety. Due to complicated wellbore structures, consisting of casing, cement sheaths, and formations under high temperature, pressure, and in situ stress, the effects of thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) coupling are crucial for the instability control of geothermal wellbores. A THM-coupled model was developed to describe the thermal, fluid, and mechanical behavior of the casing, cement sheath, and geological environment around the geothermal wellbore. The results show that a significant disturbance of effective stress occurred mainly due to the excess pore pressure and temperature changes during cold water injection. The effective stress gradually propagated to the far-field and disrupted the integrity of the wellbore structure. A serious thermal stress concentration occurred at the junction of the ca... [more]

Contradictory Conservation: The Role of Leadership in Shaping Energy Efficiency Culture in Urban Residential Cooperative Buildings
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: behavior, Energy Efficiency, leadership, organizational culture, residential buildings
In addition to formalized leadership roles within organizations, leadership can also influence members through informal channels. This work argues that multifamily residential buildings can be viewed as organizations and, as such, explores the influence that informal leaders can wield in shaping culture around the motivation for conserving energy. This work draws on qualitative fieldwork conducted in a Brooklyn cooperative building. Findings indicate that the study building benefitted from the leadership of a long-standing board member, which contributed to the implementation of a number of energy efficiency initiatives. Interestingly, this leadership also led to a culture of cost efficiency over environmental concern as the motivating force behind these initiatives. This narrative was well disseminated, with most residents reporting that the building does not have a culture of conservation, despite a strong energy efficiency leaning. Thus, this work posits that leadership can greatly... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy promotion, energy storage system, Optimization, photovoltaic energy, rate for renewable energy
Various incentive schemes are being implemented to improve the economic return of distributed energy resources (DERs). Accordingly, research on the optimal capacity design and operations of photovoltaic (PV) power generation and energy storage systems (ESSs) is important to ensure the economic efficiency of DERs. This study presents the models of optimal capacity and facility operation methods based on long-term operational changes of DERs in a building with self-consumption. Key policy variables are derived for a renewable energy system. We first analyzed the operating environments of the DERs according to the basic types of PVs and ESSs, and by examining the detailed benefit structure of a special rate for renewable energy. The optimal capacity of PVs and ESSs with the lowest net cost was estimated using various parameters in consideration of long-term operations (~15 years), and by setting rules for a special rate for renewable energy. It was confirmed that the combined use of peak... [more]

Investigation of the Carrier Movement through the Tunneling Junction in the InGaP/GaAs Dual Junction Solar Cell Using the Electrically and Optically Biased Photoreflectance Spectroscopy
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electrically biased photoreflectance, InGaP/GaAs dual junction solar cell, optically biased photoreflectance, tunnel junction
For examining the carrier movements through tunnel junction, electrically and optically-biased photoreflectance spectroscopy (EBPR and OBPR) were used to investigate the internal electric field in the InGaP/GaAs dual junction solar cell at room temperature. At InGaP and GaAs, the strength of p-n junction electric fields (Fpn) was perturbed by the external DC bias voltage and CW light intensity for EBPR and OBPR experiments, respectively. Moreover, the Fpn was evaluated using the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) of the Franz—Keldysh oscillation from PR spectra. In the EBPR, the electric field decreased by increasing the DC bias voltage, which also decreased the potential barrier. In OBPR, when incident CW light is absorbed by the top cell, the decrement of the Fpn in the GaAs cell indicates that the photogenerated carriers are accumulated near the p-n junction. Photogenerated carriers in InGaP can pass through the tunnel junction, and the PR results show the contribution of the modification... [more]

A New Modeling Framework for Multi-Scale Simulation of Hydraulic Fracturing and Production from Unconventional Reservoirs
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hydraulic fracturing, multi-scale, Simulation
This paper describes a new modeling framework for microscopic to reservoir-scale simulations of hydraulic fracturing and production. The approach builds upon a fusion of two existing high-performance simulators for reservoir-scale behavior: the GEOS code for hydromechanical evolution during stimulation and the TOUGH+ code for multi-phase flow during production. The reservoir-scale simulations are informed by experimental and modeling studies at the laboratory scale to incorporate important micro-scale mechanical processes and chemical reactions occurring within the fractures, the shale matrix, and at the fracture-fluid interfaces. These processes include, among others, changes in stimulated fracture permeability as a result of proppant behavior rearrangement or embedment, or mineral scale precipitation within pores and microfractures, at µm to cm scales. In our new modeling framework, such micro-scale testing and modeling provides upscaled hydromechanical parameters for the reservoir s... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: autoignition, fuel modification, indicator research, jet fuels, optical research
The condition of the natural environment, including breathable air, indicates that actions are to be taken related to the reduction of exhaust emissions from transport. One of the sectors of transport is aviation. The reduction of emissions is tightly related to the types of fuels in this sector of transport. In the paper, the authors propose the application of a new generation of jet fuels. A full exploration of the physicochemical properties of these fuels requires research under actual engine operation. The conducted research pertains to the autoignition of modified jet fuels in terms of the thermodynamic indicators and optical analyses of the early phase of flame development. The investigations were conducted using a Rapid Compression Expansion Machine with a simultaneous recording of images using a high-speed camera. Owing to this technique, the authors could assess the thermodynamic properties and analyze the early flame development processes. The investigations enabled the asses... [more]

Attitudes on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) as a Mitigation Technology within the UNFCCC
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: BECCS, Carbon Capture, CCS, CCUS, DAC, DACCS, mitigation, negative emissions, NETs, side-events, UNFCCC
Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is a technology for mitigating emissions from large point-source industries. In addition to the primary role of reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, CCS forms the basis for two large-scale negative emissions technologies by coupling geologic CO2 storage with bioenergy (BECCS) and direct air carbon capture (DACCS). Despite its inclusion within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), CCS has been largely unsupported by UNFCCC delegates because of its association with fossil fuels. We evaluate data from surveys given since 2015 to UNFCCC delegates at the Conference of the Parties (COPs) to ascertain how attitudes about bioenergy, BECCS, and CCS may be changing within the UNFCCC. The results show a positive change in attitudes over time for both fossil CCS and BECCS. Using a unique data analysis method, we ascertain that, in some instances, popularity of BECCS increased due to an increased acceptance of CCS despite lo... [more]

Interpretation of Gas/Water Relative Permeability of Coal Using the Hybrid Bayesian-Assisted History Matching: New Insights
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: assisted history matching, Bayesian adaptive direct search, coalbed methane, JBN method, relative permeability, unsteady-state flooding tests
The relative permeability of coal to gas and water exerts a profound influence on fluid transport in coal seams in both primary and enhanced coalbed methane (ECBM) recovery processes where multiphase flow occurs. Unsteady-state core-flooding tests interpreted by the Johnson−Bossler−Naumann (JBN) method are commonly used to obtain the relative permeability of coal. However, the JBN method fails to capture multiple gas−water−coal interaction mechanisms, which inevitably results in inaccurate estimations of relative permeability. This paper proposes an improved assisted history matching framework using the Bayesian adaptive direct search (BADS) algorithm to interpret the relative permeability of coal from unsteady-state flooding test data. The validation results show that the BADS algorithm is significantly faster than previous algorithms in terms of convergence speed. The proposed method can accurately reproduce the true relative permeability curves without a presumption of the endpoint... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: patents, sleeve valves, two-stroke
At the beginning of the 20th century the operational issues of the Otto engine had not been fully resolved. The work presented here seeks to chronicle the development of one of the alternative design pathways, namely the replacement for the gas exchange mechanism of the more conventional poppet valve arrangement with that of a sleeve valve. There have been several successful engines built with these devices, which have a number of attractive features superior to poppet valves. This review moves from the initial work of Charles Knight, Peter Burt, and James McCollum, in the first decade of the 20th century, through the work of others to develop a two-stroke version of the sleeve-valve engine, which climaxed in the construction of one of the most powerful piston aeroengines ever built, the Rolls-Royce Crecy. After that period of high activity in the 1940s, there have been limited further developments. The patent efforts changed over time from design of two-stroke sleeve-drive mechanisms... [more]

A Harmonic Compensation Method Using a Lock-In Amplifier under Non-Sinusoidal Grid Conditions for Single Phase Grid Connected Inverters
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: lock-in amplifier, Rotatory Reference Frame (RRF), Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), single-phase grid connected inverters
The power quality of grid-connected inverters (GCIs) is attracting a lot of attention as the number of distributed generation systems with renewable energy sources are increased. It is well known that the harmonics present in the grid have a lot of detrimental effects on the equipment and devices connected to a power system network such as heating and derating. These effects lead to problems in terms of safety and lifespan. Therefore, harmonic standards such as IEEE 519 and P1547 suggest that GCIs should achieve total harmonic distortion (THD) of the output current that is less than 5%. However, it is not easy to achieve the current THD of GCIs that is less than 5% with only an output filter under distorted grid conditions. In this paper, a harmonic compensation method using a lock-in amplifier (LIA) is proposed. Due to the outstanding performance of the LIA, accurate information of the harmonics can be obtained. This information is used to eliminate the harmonics by the simple PI cont... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: advanced compression ignition (ACI), knock, low temperature heat release (LTHR), multimode, octane index (OI), octane sensitivity, partial fuel stratification (PFS), spark assisted compression ignition (SACI)
Modern boosted spark-ignition (SI) engines and emerging advanced compression ignition (ACI) engines operate under conditions that deviate substantially from the conditions of conventional autoignition metrics, namely the research and motor octane numbers (RON and MON). The octane index (OI) is an emerging autoignition metric based on RON and MON which was developed to better describe fuel knock resistance over a broader range of engine conditions. Prior research at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) identified that OI performs reasonably well under stoichiometric boosted conditions, but inconsistencies exist in the ability of OI to predict autoignition behavior under ACI strategies. Instead, the autoignition behavior under ACI operation was found to correlate more closely to fuel composition, suggesting fuel chemistry differences that are insensitive to the conditions of the RON and MON tests may become the dominant factor under these high efficiency operating conditions. Investigation into the Impact of the Composition of Ethanol Fuel Deposit Control Additives on Their Effectiveness
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: engine deposits, Ethanol, fuel, tests
An increasing percentage of ethanol in fuel leads to significant changes in polarity and solubility, which makes conventional gasoline deposit control additives (DCAs) difficult to dissolve in ethanol fuels, resulting in the formation of deposits on engine elements. Critical areas of deposit formation in an engine are constituted by inlet valves, combustion chambers, and fuel injectors. As a consequence, operational parameters of the engine are disturbed to a large extent by the total effect of the deposits. To prevent the aforementioned phenomena, in the operation of engines fueled with ethanol-containing blends, it is necessary to use specifically prepared DCAs. The paper briefly presents a process of development of DCAs dedicated to high-ethanol fuels. Each of the prepared DCA formulations contained a substance having detergent-emulsifying properties (referred to in the text as DEM), a carrier oil, and a solvent. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: heat pipe heat exchanger model, improved thermal performance, minimum vapor temperature, novel model, phase change thermal resistance
Heat pipe heat exchangers (HPHEXs) are widely used in various industries. In this paper, a novel model of a liquid−liquid heat pipe heat exchanger in a countercurrent manner is established by considering the evaporation and condensation thermal resistances inside the heat pipes (HPs). The discrete method is added to the HPHEX model to determine the thermal resistances of the HPs and the temperature change trend of the heat transfer fluid in the HPHEX. The established model is verified by the HPHEX structure and experimental data in the existing literature and demonstrates numerical results that agree with the experimental data to within a 5% error. With the current model, the investigation compares the effectiveness and minimum vapor temperature of the HPHEX with three types of HP diameters, different mass flow rates, and different H* values. With the advent of restructuring in the power industry, the conventional unit commitment problem in power systems, involving the minimization of operation costs in a traditional vertically integrated system structure, has been transformed to the profit-based unit commitment (PBUC) approach, whereby generation companies (GENCOs) perform scheduling of the available production units with the aim of profit maximization. Generally, a GENCO solves the PBUC problem for participation in the day-ahead market (DAM) through determining the commitment and scheduling of fossil-fuel-based units to maximize their own profit according to a set of forecasted price and load data.
