Crashed Electric Vehicle Handling and Recommendations—State of the Art in Germany
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: accident, battery, electric vehicle, Energy Storage, fire extinguishing, handling, high voltage, recommendation, rescue service, thermal runaway
In the near future, electric powered vehicles will represent a major part of the road traffic. Accordingly, there will be a natural increase of accidents involving electric vehicles. There are not many cases of such accidents yet and therefore the experience and correct handling are still partially open points for the involved parties, such as the rescue services for example. The aim of this work is to provide a complete overview of the accident handling sequence in Germany, starting with the damaged vehicle on site and moving on to the risks and challenges for the stakeholders, such as transport and recycling companies. Arising from the developed overview, a handling recommendation for yet undiscussed points is given. Especially, different extinguishing and deactivation methods are compared and discussed. Due to a lack of a common live-feed from battery data on site, other criteria have to be taken into account to assess the state of the battery. The wrecked vehicle—including the high... [more]

Efficiency Enhancement on Hybrid Power System Composed of Irreversible Solid Oxide Fuel Cell and Stirling Engine by Finite Time Thermodynamics
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: finite-time thermodynamics, hybrid system, Solid Oxide Fuel Cell, Stirling Engine
This paper presents the work for efficiency enhancement on a hybrid power system with an irreversible Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) and Stirling Engine (SE) for various system design using the approach of finite-time thermodynamics. The SOFC-based cogeneration system was integrated with an SE and several heat components. The effects of design configurations using various interface components on system performance were investigated. By analyzing the SE with finite-time thermodynamics and considering multiple irreversible factors of output power given by the SOFC, the efficiency of the calculation can be more practical and accurate. In this study, the working efficiency of the proposed hybrid system was enhanced by 16.37% compared to that of the conventional system at an intermediate temperature of 873 K. The design approach proposed herein is considered an essential package for building highly efficient power systems working in the intermediate temperature range.

Pressurized Steam Conversion of Biomass Residues for Liquid Hydrocarbons Generation
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bio-oils, Biomass, grape residue, liquefaction, pyrolysis, steam
Biomass residues are often considered as a resource if conveniently converted in fuel and alternative feedstock for chemical processes, and their conversion into valuable products may occur by different pathways. This work is focused on the thermochemical conversion at moderate temperature and in steam atmosphere, a mild process in comparison to hydrothermal liquefaction, followed by extraction of soluble products in a solvent. Such process has been already applied to various residues and here extended to the case of marc, the residual pomace from wine making, largely produced worldwide. A pressurized batch reactor was used for the quantitative determination of produced solid and liquid fractions, and their qualitative characterization was performed by instrumental analyses. The pressurized steam conversion of marc was effective, providing a yield in liquid fraction, upon extraction in solvent, up to 30% of the raw dried biomass. The use of polar and nonpolar solvent for the extraction... [more]

Case Study of Roadway Deformation Failure Mechanisms: Field Investigation and Numerical Simulation
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: complex engineering geological conditions, failure mechanisms, field investigation, PFC
The safety of underground roadways is a major issue in mining engineering, with economic impacts and potential threats to the lives of workers. Elucidating the deformation failure mechanisms is necessary to solve these problems. The deformation failure modes and characteristics of roadways buried at various depths were investigated using a detailed field survey in the Jinchuan nickel mine. At greater depths, roadway deformation was more serious, the creep phenomena were more prominent, and support structures were more prone to failure. Numerical simulations were performed on the roadways under various geo-stresses and rock mass structures, which indicated that the roadway deformation mode was mainly controlled by a rock mass structure in a lower stress environment and the control effect was weakened with the gradual increase of ground stress. Six deformation failure types were proposed to examine roadway deformation failure mechanisms. Field representation of each failure type was char... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: alkaline-earth metals, basicity, biodiesel, heterogeneous catalysts, operation conditions, recycle, transesterification, vegetable oils, wasted cooking oils
Biodiesel produced through catalytic transesterification of triglycerides from edible and non-edible oils and alcohol is considered an alternative to traditional petro-diesel. The interest in the use of alkaline earth metal oxides as heterogeneous basic catalysts has increased due to their availability, non-toxicity, the capacity to be reused, low cost, and high concentration of surface basic sites that provide the activity. This work is a compilation of the strategies to understand the effect of the source, synthesis, and thermal treatment of MgO, CaO, SrO, and BaO on the improvement of the surface basic sites density and strength, the morphology of the solid structure, stability during reaction and reusability. These parameters are commonly modified or enhanced by mixing these oxides or with alkaline metals. Also, the improvement of the acid-base properties and to avoid the lixiviation of catalysts can be achieved by supporting the alkaline earth metal oxides on another oxide. Additi... [more]

Numerical Analysis of the Energy Consumption of Ventilation Processes in the School Swimming Pool
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air flow rate, air parameters, energy consumption, heat recovery, indoor swimming pool, ventilation
Ventilation of an indoor swimming pool is a very energy consuming process. This is a result of, among other things the required high value of the ventilation air volume flow rate, calculated on the basis of the moisture gains in the facility. The total energy consumption consists of the heat required to heat this air and the electricity needed to transport it. It is possible to reduce the ventilation air volume flow rate by assuming the correct value of specific humidity of the supply and indoor air, but then a deterioration of thermal-moisture conditions in the building can be expected. The aim of this paper was to examine how the reduction of the supply air volume flow rate affects the energy consumption for indoor swimming pool ventilation. It was also checked how this consumption can be reduced by using two-stage heat recovery in the air handling unit. Multi-variant simulations of energy consumption for indoor swimming pool ventilation were carried out using the IDA ICE software fo... [more]

Determination of Zero Dimensional, Apparent Devolatilization Kinetics for Biomass Particles at Suspension Firing Conditions
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biomass devolatilization, biomass pyrolysis, devolatilization model, partial least squares regression (PLS), suspension firing
As part of the strive for a carbon neutral energy production, biomass combustion has been widely implemented in retrofitted coal burners. Modeling aids substantially in prediction of biomass flame behavior and thus in boiler chamber conditions. In this work, a simple model for devolatilization of biomass at conditions relevant for suspension firing is presented. It employs Arrhenius parameters in a single first order (SFOR) devolatilization reaction, where the effects of kinetics and heat transfer limitations are lumped together. In this way, a biomass particle can be modeled as a zero dimensional, isothermal particle, facilitating computational fluid dynamic calculations of boiler chambers. The zero dimensional model includes the effects of particle aspect ratio, particle density, maximum gas temperature, and particle radius. It is developed using the multivariate data analysis method, partial least squares regression, and is validated against a more rigorous semi-2D devolatilization... [more]

On the Use of Modern Engineering Codes for Designing a Small Wind Turbine: An Annotated Case Study
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aerodynamics, engineering codes, pitch, stall, wind turbine
While most wind energy comes from large utility-scale machines, small wind turbines (SWTs) can still play a role in off-grid installations or in the context of distributed production and smart energy systems. Over the years, these small machines have not received the same level of aerodynamic refinement of their larger counterparts, resulting in a notably lower efficiency and, therefore, a higher cost per installed kilowatt. In an effort to reduce this gap during the design of a new SWT, the scope of the study was twofold. First, it aimed to show how to combine and best exploit the modern engineering methods and codes available in order to provide the scientific and industrial community with an annotated procedure for a full preliminary design process. Secondly, special focus was put on the regulation methods, which are often some of the critical points of a real design. A dedicated sensitivity analysis for a proper setting is provided, both for the pitch-to-feather and the stall regul... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: crystalline massif, geothermal water, geothermometers, hydrochemistry, Lądek-Zdrój, medicinal water, Poland
Lądek-Zdrój is situated within the tectonic unit of the Lądek-Śnieżnik metamorphic complex. Thermal water is captured by five springs and borehole L-2. These waters are characterized by TDS content in the range of 160−230 mg/L and predominance of HCO3− (15−100% meq), SO42+ (10−36% meq), and Na+ (57−91% meq) ions. Increased concentrations of radon, hydrogen sulfide, and fluoride ions (7−13 mg/L) determine the medicinal properties of these waters, classified as thermal waters of Na-HCO3-(SO4), F−, H2S, Rn type, with temperatures of 18 to 30 °C and 41 to 45 °C in springs and in the L-2 borehole, respectively. At the turn of 2018 and 2019, a new borehole LZT-1 was drilled in the area of Lądek-Zdrój. It captured thermal waters with a temperature of 37.4 °C at the outflow. The water temperature at the bottom of the heated borehole reached about 59 °C. Keywords: backward-facing step, boundary layer, cavity, cylinder, heat transfer enhancement, high turbulence, rib, separated flows
The study of flows with a high degree of turbulence in boundary layers, near-wall jets, gas curtains, separated flows behind various obstacles, as well as during combustion is of great importance for increasing energy efficiency of the flow around various elements in the ducts of gas-dynamic installations. This paper gives some general characteristics of experimental work on the study of friction and heat transfer on a smooth surface, in near-wall jets, and gas curtains under conditions of increased free-stream turbulence. Taking into account the significant effect of high external turbulence on dynamics and heat transfer of separated flows, a similar effect on the flow behind various obstacles is analyzed. First of all, the classical cases of flow separation behind a single backward-facing step and a rib are considered. Then, more complex cases of the flow around a rib oriented at different angles to the flow are analyzed, as well as a system of ribs and a transverse trench with strai... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy consumption, households, platform
The ongoing digitization of the economy has led to the creation and functioning of platform model socio-economic systems. It is also reflected in the changes in patterns of energy consumption in households. In the first cross-section, it is an industrial revolution, with environmental benefits. However, platforms are primarily a revolution in the consumption sphere, and here, the effects of digitization are not fully recognized. Our social needs are increasingly met “through accessibility” without us leaving our home. Due to the home’s multifunctionality, based on the availability of platform services, household energy consumption should be viewed differently today than before. The article aims to show the changes in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) household energy consumption between 2008−2018 and their assessment through the prism of the economy’s platformization methods. The study presents the changes in energy consumption in households and determines the correlations between platf... [more]

Robust Digital Control Strategy Based on Fuzzy Logic for a Solar Charger of VRLA Batteries
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: buck converter, digital MPPT, fuzzy logic controller, PV standalone system, solar battery charger
This paper presents the design and implementation of a digital control strategy for a Buck converter, used as a solar charger of valve-regulated lead acid (VRLA) batteries. The control system consists of two fuzzy logic controllers (FLCs), which adjust the appropriate increment of the converter duty cycle based on battery state of charge according to a three-stage charging scheme. One FLC works as a maximum power point tracker (FLC-MPPT), while the other regulates the battery voltage (FLC-VR). This approach of using two different set of membership functions overcomes the limitations of the battery chargers with a single control function, where the voltage supplied to the battery is either not constant due to the operation of the MPPT algorithm (possibly damaging the battery) or is constant due to the operation of the voltage control (hence, MPP cannot be achieved). In this way, the proposed control approach has the advantage of extracting the maximum energy of the PV panel, preventing... [more]

Performance Analysis and Optimization of a Vertical-Axis Wind Turbine with a High Tip-Speed Ratio
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dynamic pitch, Optimization, performance, vertical-axis wind turbine
In this work, the aerodynamic performance and optimization of a vertical-axis wind turbine with a high tip-speed ratio are theoretically studied on the basis of the two-dimensional airfoil theory. By dividing the rotating plane of the airfoil into the upwind and downwind areas, the relationship among the angle of attack, azimuth, pitch angle, and tip-speed ratio is derived using the quasi-steady aerodynamic model, and aerodynamic loads on the airfoil are then obtained. By applying the polynomial approximation to functions of lift and drag coefficients with the angle of attack for symmetric and asymmetric airfoils, respectively, explicit expressions of aerodynamic loads as functions of the angle of attack are obtained. The performance of a fixed-pitch blade is studied by employing a NACA0012 model, and influences of the tip speed ratio, pitch angle, chord length, rotor radius, incoming wind speed and rotational speed on the performance of the blade are discussed. Furthermore, the optimi... [more]

Voltage Optimization in MV Network with Distributed Generation Using Power Consumption Control in Electrolysis Installations
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electrolysis, Hydrogen, power to gas, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, voltage control, voltage quality
Connecting a large number of distributed sources to the medium and low voltage grid poses many problems. The most important of these are the voltage changes inside the network, what can be observed when the power flow from these sources towards the HV/MV (High Voltage/Medium Voltage) transformer station. In particular, if the power consumption in nodes of the MV network is small and the distance between the place of installation of the source and the substation is large, increases and changes in voltage may be dangerous for the insulation of the network and burdensome for the consumers connected to it. The solution most frequently used to control voltage increases is the appropriate setting of the controller that affects the on-load tap changer of the MV/HV or even MV/LV (Medium Voltage/Low Voltage) transformer. It is also possible to regulate the reactive power of the sources and, of course, to limit their generated active power (curtailment of generation). The development of energy s... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dimensioning, efficiency, Energy Storage, grid code, renewable energies, supercapacitor, Wave Energy
The aim of this paper is to present a methodology for dimensioning an energy storage system (ESS) to the generation data measured in an operating wave energy generation plant connected to the electric grid in the north of Spain. The selection criterion for the ESS is the compliance of the power injected into the grid with a specific active-power ramp-rate limit. Due to its electrical characteristics, supercapacitor (SC) technology is especially suitable for this application. The ESS dimensioning methodology is based on a mathematical model, which takes into account the power generation system, the chosen ramp-rate limit, the ESS efficiency maps and electrical characteristics. It allows one to evaluate the number of storage cabinets required to satisfy the needs described, considering a compromise between the number of units, which means cost, and the reliability of the storage system to ensure the grid codes compliance. Japan’s energy consumption in 2018 was about 2.5 times that in 1975, with the increase in the household sector being the largest at 28%. Most of primary energy is still fossil fuel, and it is urgent to reduce energy consumption in the household sector. The purpose of this paper was to identify ways to reduce household energy consumption without compromising the quality of life in residence. However, the reduction methods vary by region, building specifications, household type, equipment specifications, season, and weather. The value of this paper is based on a systematic analysis of home energy management systems (HEMS) data from about 50,000 households under various conditions. We are analyzing ways to reduce energy consumption. Few studies have analyzed this much back-up data, which is likely to lead to a reduction in CO2 emissions across the household sector. Experimental Study on Behavior of Coolants, Particularly the Oil-Cooling Method, in Electric Vehicle Motors Using Hairpin Winding
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electric vehicles, hairpin winding, mixture of oil and air, oil cooling, thermal management, traction motors
This paper analyzes the characteristics of oil behavior in the oil-cooling of motors with hairpin winding to understand how to maximize cooling performance. The oil cooling is performed by directly spraying oil onto the motor components. The results show that as the temperature of the oil increases, the viscosity decreases, and the oil film is formed more evenly; however, oil splashing also increases. Similarly, as the flow rate increases, oil splashing also increases, but the amount of oil forming the oil film increases. However, the oil film is not affected by the rotor’s rotation. In contrast, the immersed oil is found to be closely related to the rotor’s rotation. As the rotational speed increases, the immersion oil is mixed with the air, and oil churning occurs. The mixing phenomenon increases as the temperature and flow rate of the oil increases. The higher the oil level, the greater the oil churning. As the oil is mixed with air, the heat transfer coefficient decreases, which ad... [more]

A Robust Nonlinear Controller for PMSG Wind Turbines

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: lyapunov, nonlinear control, permanent magnet synchronous generator, wind turbine controls
In this paper, a nonlinear backstepping controller is proposed to manage the performance of a full-variable permanent magnet synchronous generator wind turbine. This nonlinear controller achieves a rotational speed objective for the generator and is validated through Lyapunov-based stability analysis. Additionally, this objective is accomplished without a measurement for wind speed that influences the wind torque. The proposed scheme is compared to a typical linear controller through simulation results. Simulation tests are performed to compare the response time and average error of each controller in both a drastic and realistic dynamic wind environment. These results demonstrate that the proposed controller is far more robust to wind turbulence than traditional control schemes. The simulation results of this study indicate a 1000% increase in response time and 3000% decrease in average controller error.

Keywords: 2D model tests, chemical flooding, chemical flooding, heavy oil, heavy oil recovery mechanisms, Hele-Shaw cell
This study aims to develop a visual understanding of the macro-displacement mechanisms associated with heavy oil recovery by water and chemical flooding in a 2D system. The sweep efficiency improvements by water, surfactant, polymer, and surfactant-polymer (SP) were evaluated in a Hele-Shaw cell with no local pore-level trapping of fluids. The results demonstrated that displacement performance is highly correlated to the mobility ratio between the fluids. Surfactant and water reached similar oil recovery values at similar mobility ratios; however, they exhibited different flow patterns in the 2D system—reductions in IFT can lead to the formation of emulsions and alter flow pathways, but in the absence of porous media these do not lead to significant improvements in oil recovery. Polymer flooding displayed a more stable front and a higher reduction in viscous fingering. Oil recovery by SP was achieved mostly by polymer rather than due to the effect of the surfactant. Efficiently storing energy on a large scale poses a major challenge and one that is growing in importance with the increasing share of renewables in the energy mix. The only options at present are either pumped hydro or compressed air storage. One novel alternative is to store energy using liquid air, but this technology is not yet fully mature and requires substantial research and development, including in-depth energy and exergy analysis. This paper presents an exergy analysis of the Adiabatic Liquid Air Energy Storage (A-LAES) system based on the Linde−Hampson cycle. The exergy analysis was carried out for four cases with different parameters, in particular the discharge pressure of the air at the inlet of the turbine (20, 40, 100, 150 bar). The results of the analysis show that the greatest exergy destruction can be observed in the air evaporator and in the Joule−Thompson valve.
