Management and Economic Sustainability of the Slovak Industrial Companies with Medium Energy Intensity
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: economic sustainability, factor analysis, Industry 4.0, mechanical engineering industry, Slovakia
Industry 4.0 and related automation and digitization have a significant impact on competition between companies. They have to deal with the lack of financial resources to apply digital solutions in their businesses. In Slovakia, Industry 4.0 plays an important role, especially in the mechanical engineering industry (MEI). This paper aims to identify the groups of financial ratios that can be used to measure the financial performance of the companies operating in the Slovak MEI. From the whole MEI, we selected the 236 largest non-financial corporations whose ranking we obtained according to the amount of generated revenues in 2017. Using factor analysis, from eleven traditional financial ratios, we extracted four independent factors that measure liquidity (equity to liabilities ratio, quick ratio, debt ratio, net working capital to assets ratio, current ratio), profitability (return on sales, return on investments), indebtedness (financial leverage, debt to equity ratio), and activity (... Impact of Dropwise Condensation on the Biomass Production Rate in Covered Raceway Ponds
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biofuel, bioprocess engineering, design, light transfer, Modelling, photobioreactor
This study investigates the effect of condensed water droplets on the areal biomass productivity of outdoor culture systems with a free surface, protected by a transparent window or cover to prevent contamination and to control the growth conditions. Under solar radiation, evaporation from the culture causes droplets to condense on the interior surface of the cover. To quantify the effect of droplets on the system’s performance, the bidirectional transmittance of a droplet-covered window was predicted using the Monte Carlo ray-tracing method. It was combined with a growth kinetics model of Chlorella vulgaris to predict the temporal evolution of the biomass concentration on 21 June and 23 September in Los Angeles, CA. A droplet contact angle of 30∘ or 90∘ and a surface area coverage of 50% or 90% were considered. Light scattering by the condensed droplets changed the direction of the incident sunlight while reducing the amount of light reaching the culture by up to 37%. The combined eff... [more]

Investigation of Buckwheat Hulls as Additives in the Production of Solid Biomass Fuel from Straw
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ash, biofuel production, buckwheat hulls, composition, mixture, wheat straw
The aim of this study was to further increase the amount of straw that can be used to produce solid biofuels, as currently only about 130−140 thousand of the 3 million tonnes of straw collected annually in Lithuania are used for solid biofuel production. Therefore, the use of buckwheat hulls as an additive in solid biofuel production was investigated. Mixtures of wheat straw and buckwheat hulls were used for this research, with an increase in buckwheat hulls from 25% to 75% of the total weight of the mixture. Results of the analysis of the chemical composition, moisture, ash, and volatile matter content of the mixtures, as well as their ash properties, were compared with the corresponding results obtained with pure buckwheat hulls, wheat straw, and wood chips. It is observed an increase in all ash melting temperatures by increasing the portion of buckwheat hulls in the mixture. Additionally, the ash shrinkage starting temperature was shown to increase as the total content of buckwheat... [more]

Variation and Prediction Methods of the Explosion Characteristic Parameters of Coal Dust/Gas Mixtures
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: characteristic parameters, coal dust, gas, hybrid explosion, prediction model
In order to investigate the change law of the explosion characteristic parameters of hybrid mixture of coal dust and gas, and then establish an effective prediction method of these parameters, the maximum explosion pressure, explosion index, and lower explosion limit of coal dust and gas mixtures were measured in a standard 20 L spherical explosion system. Four different kinds of hybrid mixture were selected in this study and they are composed of coal dust with different components and gas respectively. According to the measured results, the change law of the explosion characteristic parameters of hybrid mixture of coal dust and gas was analyzed, and the prediction method of these parameters was discussed. The results show that the addition of gas to a coal dust cloud can obviously increase its maximum explosion pressure and explosion index and notably reduce its minimum explosion concentration. On increasing the gas equivalent ratio, the maximum explosion pressure of coal dust and gas... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coincident peak, customer satisfaction, demand response, electric vehicles, energy storage systems, home energy management, loss of life, renewable energy sources, transformer aging
This paper proposes a Home Energy Management System (HEMS) that optimizes the load demand and distributed energy resources. The optimal demand/generation profile is presented while considering utility price signal, customer satisfaction, and distribution transformer condition. The electricity home demand considers electric vehicles (EVs), Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs), and all types of non-shiftable, shiftable, and controllable appliances. Furthermore, PV-based renewable energy resources, EVs, and BESSs are utilized as sources of generated power during specific time intervals. In this model, customers can only perform Demand Response (DR) actions with contracts with utility operators. A multi-objective demand/generation response is proposed to optimize the scheduling of various loads/supplies based on the pricing schemes. The customers’ behavior comfort level and a degradation cost that reflects the distribution transformer Loss-of-Life (LoL) are integrated into the multi-obje... [more]

Use of Gas Desorption Effect in Injection Systems of Diesel Engines
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: compression ignition engines, desorption effect, exhaust gas, gas dissolution, high-pressure pump, injection pump, injection systems, pump with hypocycloid drive
The article presents a concept of improving operation of the engine with the effect of gas desorption from a solution with nucleation of gas bubbles. This concept consists in dissolving gas in diesel fuel until the solution is in equilibrium. At a later stage, the phenomenon is reversed, and the gas is released from the solution during its injection into the combustion chamber. The purpose of the study is to present the idea of the desorption effect along with a thermodynamic analysis of the process and to study its impact on the operation of a diesel engine. The article also describes the most important features of the injection pump adapted to employ the desorption effect, which is a proprietary, patented solution. The conducted engine preliminary tests concerned the most important parameters of the engine’s operation (indicated pressure course, pressure growth rate, heat release rate, etc.) and the emission of harmful compounds (PM—particulate matter, CO, HC, and NOx—nitrogen oxides... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: boiler-turbine coupling, exergy method, system optimization, thermal performance analysis, ultra-supercritical double reheat cycle
In order to solve the existing problems of large mean heat transfer temperature differences of regenerative air heaters and high superheat degrees of regenerative extraction steam in double reheat coal-fired power generation systems, two new design schemes of ultra-supercritical double reheat cycles are proposed, which can realize the deep boiler-turbine coupling among the heat transfer processes of air, feeding water and regeneration extraction steam on the base of the principle of energy level matching. A typical 1000 MW ultra-supercritical double reheat cycle system is selected as the reference system and the overall system model is built by using the Ebsilon simulation software. The performances of two new systems are analyzed by using both the exergy method and energy equilibrium method. The results show that net output powers of both new systems 1 and 2 increase by 6.38 MW and 6.93 MW, respectively, and the standard coal consumptions of power generation decrease by 1.65 g/kWh and... A Probable Origin of Dibenzothiophenes in Coals and Oils
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aromatic sulfur heterocyclics, dibenzothiophene, homolysis, hydroarylation, phenyldibenzothiophene, thiophenolate
To probe the possibility of thiophenolate as an origin of dibenzothiophenes (DBTs) and establish the detailed chemical transformations from thiophenolate to DBTs, the thermal degradation of thiophenolate has been carried out at various temperatures. The characterizations of both gaseous products and solid residues indicate that DBTs together with benzene, diphenyl sulfide, and diphenyl disulfide are the major degradation products. The presence of benzene supports that the thermal degradation of thiophenolate begins with the homolysis of Ar‒H bonds. The subsequent hydroarylation followed by the elimination and cyclization reactions facilely generates DBTs. The transformation of thiophenolate to DBTs is chemically simple and highly geochemically feasible. It readily unifies the chemical pathways involved in the generation of DBTs from thiophenolate and that of dibenzofurans from phenolate in nature.

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: 3-dimensional column, CO2 dissolution, convection, oil, porous media, reservoir conditions
During CO2 storage, CO2 plume mixes with the water and oil present at the reservoir, initiated by diffusion followed by a density gradient that leads to a convective flow. Studies are available where CO2 convective mixing have been studied in water phase but limited in oil phase. This study was conducted to reach this gap, and experiments were conducted in a vertically packed 3-dimensional column with oil-saturated unconsolidated porous media at 100 bar and 50 °C (representative of reservoir pressure and temperature conditions). N-Decane and crude oil were used as oils, and glass beads as porous media. A bromothymol blue water solution-filled sapphire cell connected at the bottom of the column was used to monitor the CO2 breakthrough. With the increase of the Rayleigh number, the CO2 transport rate in n-decane was found to increase as a function of a second order polynomial. Ra number vs. dimensionless time τ had a power relationship in the form of Ra = c×τ−n. The overall pre... [more]

Design and Verification of the LQR Controller Based on Fuzzy Logic for Large Wind Turbine
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fuzzy logic, linear quadratic regulator (LQR), variable speed variable pitch (VSVP), wind tunnel test, wind turbine scaled model
In this study, a linear quadratic regulator based on the fuzzy logic (LQRF) control algorithm for a variable-speed variable-pitch wind turbine was designed. In addition, to verify the optimum performance of the controller, simulations and wind tunnel tests were conducted. In the simulation, the performances of the proportional-integral (PI) and LQRF algorithms were compared in the transition region and the rated power region. In the wind tunnel test, the applicability of the LQRF algorithm was verified by comparing it with the conventional PI algorithms. The results showed that when compared with the PI control, the proposed LQRF control reduced the tower vibration by up to 12.50% depending on the operating region. Furthermore, the power deviation was reduced by 38.93%. These tests confirmed that the proposed LQRF control increases the power performance and structural stability of wind turbines compared with conventional PI controls.

Water Extraction from Air: A Proposal for a New Indicator to Compare Air Water Generators Efficiency
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air to water technology, atmospheric water condensation, coefficient of performance, energy efficiency ratio, refrigeration, water extraction
Water extraction from air, based on reverse cycle systems, is becoming a technology more and more diffused and various models of air to water generators (AWG) are now available, all claiming the best efficiency. To date, there is not a standard indicator stating energy efficiency for AWGs, neither in the literature nor in technical practice. The only evaluation parameter, that can be found is a sort of specific energy consumption (SEC) without any clear indications about the involved calculation terms, definition of hypotheses, or environmental conditions. The current work is a first proposal of an indicator to standardise the AWG efficiency evaluation. The indicator is called WET (Water Energy Transformation); it states water production as a useful effect of an AWG machine and calculates its energy performance with an approach similar to COP (Coefficient of Performance) and EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) evaluation. The indicator is meant to be a normalised tool that permits comparing... [more]

Selection of Heat Pump Capacity Used at Thermal Power Plants under Electricity Market Operating Conditions
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electricity market, heat pumps, heat supply, thermal power plants
The percentage of heat pumps used in thermal power plants (TPPs) in the fuel and energy balance is extremely low in in most countries. One of the reasons for this is the lack of a systematic approach to selecting and justifying the circuit solutions and equipment capacity. This article aims to develop a new method of calculating the maximum capacity of heat pumps. The method proposed in the article has elements of marginal analysis. It takes into account the limitation of heat pump capacity by break-even operation at electric power market (compensation of fuel expenses, connected with electric power production). In this case, the heat pump’s maximum allowable capacity depends on the electric capacity of TPP, electricity consumption for own needs, specific consumption of conditional fuel for electricity production, a ratio of prices for energy resources, and a conversion factor of heat pump. For TPP based on combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) CCGT-450 with prices at the Russian energy re... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery equalization, electric vehicle, flyback transformer, Step Size Factor, variable step size generalized predictive control
The inconsistency in large-scale battery pack significantly degrades the performance of electric vehicles. In order to diminish the inconsistency, the study designs an active equalization method comprising of equalizer and equalization strategy for lithium-ion batteries. A bidirectional flyback transformer equalizer (BFTE) is designed and analyzed. The BFTE is controlled by a pulse width modulation (PWM) controller to output designated balancing currents.
