April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Alternative Fuels, emissions, low-temperature combustion, premixing ratio, reactivity-controlled compression ignition engine
Environmental concerns over automotive exhaust emissions and consumer demand for higher fuel efficiency have led to the development of low-temperature combustion concepts. The reactivity-controlled compression ignition (RCCI) engine is one among them and has the potential to reduce NOx and smoke emissions simultaneously. In this concept, a low-reactivity fuel is injected into the intake port and another high-reactivity fuel is injected into the cylinder directly. This results in reactivity stratification and provides more control over the rate of heat release. However, operating parameters such as reactivity of fuels, premixing ratio, injection strategies, exhaust gas recirculation ratio, piston bowl geometry, and compression ratio influence emissions formation. The article reviews recent developments on the effect of the above operating parameters on the performance and emission characteristics of RCCI engines operated with alternative fuels. The combustion strategies used to extend t... [more]

April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dual-motor electric drive system, dynamic characteristics, electromechanical coupling, hybrid electric vehicle, impact energy
The electric mode is the main operational mode of dual-motor hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), so the reliability of the dual-motor electric drive system (DEDS) is particularly important. To research the electromechanical coupling mechanism of the DEDS of HEVs, firstly, considering the time-varying mesh stiffness of gears and the nonlinear characteristics of inverters, an electromechanical coupling dynamics model of the DEDS was established, including the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) and the gear transmission system. Then, the electromechanical coupled dynamic characteristics of the DEDS in the single-motor and dual-motor drive modes were analyzed under steady-state and impact load conditions, respectively. The results show that the motor stator current frequency is modulated by the complicated gear meshing frequency, and the operation state of the gear transmission system can thus be monitored in the stator current. Impact load causes the instantaneous torsional vibration... [more]

Keywords: data center, Energy Efficiency, energy proportionality, power consumption
Contemporary megawatt-scale data centers have emerged to meet the increasing demand for online cloud services and big data analytics. However, in such large-scale data centers, servers of different generations are installed gradually year by year, making the data center heterogeneous in computing capability and energy efficiency. Furthermore, due to different processor architectures, complex and diverse load dynamic changing, business coupling, and other reasons, operators pay great attention to processor hardware power consumption and server aggregation energy efficiency. Therefore, the simulation and analysis of the energy efficiency characteristics of data center servers under different processor architectures can help operators understand the energy efficiency characteristics of data centers and make the optimal task scheduling strategy. This is very beneficial for improving the energy efficiency of the production system and the entire data center. The Escope simulator designed in... [more]

Keywords: heat flux, magnetic field, Newtonian heating, Sisko fluid, spectral relaxation method
The present study investigates the steady three-dimensional flow of a Sisko fluid over a bidirectional stretching sheet under the influence of Lorentz force. Heat transfer effects have been carried out for constant heat flux and Newtonian heating systems. The transformed governing equations of the flow model are solved by using the spectral relaxation method (SRM), taking into account similarity transformations. The effects of controlling parameters on flow and derived quantities have been presented in the form of graphs and tables. Numerical benchmarks are used to characterise the effects of skin friction and heat transfer rates. It is noticed that in the case of Newtonian heating, the rate of heat transfer is higher than that in the constant heat flux case. As the stretching parameter increases, the fluid temperature decreases in both Newtonian heating and constant heat flux. It was discovered that successive over (under) relaxation (SOR) approaches will considerably boost the conver... [more]

Keywords: ARIMA model, copula function, Genetic Algorithm, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, scenario generation
Determining the operation scenarios of renewable energies is important for power system dispatching. This paper proposes a renewable scenario generation method based on the hybrid genetic algorithm with variable chromosome length (HGAVCL). The discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is used to divide the original data into linear and fluctuant parts according to the length of time scales. The HGAVCL is designed to optimally divide the linear part into different time sections. Additionally, each time section is described by the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model. With the consideration of temporal correlation, the Copula joint probability density function is established to model the fluctuant part. Based on the attained ARIMA model and joint probability density function, a number of data are generated by the Monte Carlo method, and the time autocorrelation, average offset rate, and climbing similarity indexes are established to assess the data quality of generated scenarios... Keywords: desalination, energy storage systems, energy sustainability, renewable energy resources
Recently, water desalination (WD) has been required for the supply of drinking water in a number of countries. Various technologies of WD utilize considerable thermal and/or electrical energies for removing undesirable salts. Desalination systems now rely on renewable energy resources (RERs) such as geothermal, solar, tidal, wind power, etc. The intermittent nature and changeable intensity constrain the wide applications of renewable energy, so the combination of energy storage systems (ESSs) with WD in many locations has been introduced. Thermal energy storage (TES) needs a convenient medium for storing and hence reuses energy. The present work provides a good background on the methods and technologies of WD. Furthermore, the concepts of both thermal and electrical energy storage are presented. In addition, a detailed review of employing ESSs in various WD processes driven by RERs is presented. The integration of energy storage with water desalination systems (WDSs) based on renewable... [more]

Keywords: coal mine goafs, methane explosions, spontaneous coal combustion, three stages, ventilation dilution
In coal mine goafs, spontaneous combustion of coal can result in methane accumulation, which raises the danger of methane explosion disasters. As an atmospheric control tool, ventilation is applied to ensure air quality for avoiding disasters in underground mines. However, during the process of the spontaneous combustion of coal in coal mine goafs, the impact of ventilation dilution on the possible methane explosions induced by coal combustion has not been well investigated. In this study, a validated gas flow model for the spontaneous coal combustion environment in goafs of coal mines is adopted to investigate the influence of ventilation dilution at the three stages of the spontaneous combustion of coal. The research conclusions suggest that (1) ventilation dilution is a quick measure to dilute methane concentration and intensify heat transfer in the vertical direction in coal mine goafs; (2) ventilation dilution can lessen the danger of methane explosions by diluting methane concent... Keywords: hybrid electrolytes, liquid electrolytes, quasi-solid electrolytes, sodium-ion batteries, solid electrolytes
Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are one of the recent trends in energy storage systems due to their promising properties, the high abundance of sodium in the Earth’s crust, and their low cost. However, the commercialization process of SIBs is in the early stages of development because of some challenges related to electrodes and electrolytes. Electrolytes are vital components of secondary batteries because they determine anode/cathode performance; energy density; operating conditions (electrochemical stability window, open circuit voltage, current rate, etc.); cyclic properties; electrochemical, thermal, mechanical, and dimensional stability; safety level; and the service life of the system. The performance of the battery is based on the structural, morphological, electrical, and electrochemical properties of the electrolytes. In this review, electrolytes used for SIBs are classified according to their state and material, including liquid, quasi-solid, solid, and hybrid, and recent advance... [more]

Keywords: açaí seeds, acidity, chemical activation, liquid hydrocarbons, pyrolysis
In this study, we investigated the acid (HCl) and alkali (KOH) chemical activation of açaí seeds (Euterpe Oleraceae, Mart.) pre-treatment before pyrolysis at temperatures of 350−450 °C in order to assess how reactions proceed when affected by temperature. Chemical composition of bio-oil and aqueous phase were determined by GC-MS and FT-IR. The bio-char is characterized by XRD. For the activation with KOH, the XRD analysis identified the presence of Kalicinite (KHCO3), the dominant crystalline phase in bio-char, while an amorphous phase was identified in bio-chars for the activation with HCl. The experiments have shown that bio-oil yield increases with temperature for the KOH activated biomass and decreases for the acid activated one. The KOH bio-oil is primarily composed of alcohols and ketones, showing the lowest acid values when compared with the HCl one, which is composed mainly of carboxylic acids and phenols. An increase in alcohol content and a decrease in ketones in the KOH bio-... [more]

Plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) and distributed generation (DG) can positively and negatively impact the distribution system. Therefore, this paper presents the modeling and analysis of DG and PEVs’ penetration levels of the three-phase unbalanced radial distribution system. The study aims to optimize the distribution system’s DG sizing and PEV charging to minimize total power loss. The test system is the 4th circuit of the Nonsung service station along Thaharn Road, Muang District, Udon Thani, Thailand. According to objective function and constraints, such control variables as installation buses and rated outputs of DG and the penetration levels of PEVs were obtained to evaluate the total power loss. Significantly, the charging demand of PEVs is an uncertain load estimated by queuing theory integration with the minimization tool called the differential evaluation (DE) method. According to the result comparison of a four case simulation, the total power losses of queuing theory and DE... [more]

Today, increasing numbers of batteries are installed in residential and commercial buildings; by coordinating their operation, it is possible to favor both the exploitation of renewable sources and the safe operation of electricity grids. However, how can this multitude of battery storage systems be coordinated? Using the Application Programming Interfaces of the storage systems’ manufacturers is a feasible solution, but it has a huge limitation: communication to and from storage systems must necessarily pass through the manufacturers’ cloud infrastructure. Therefore, this article presents an IoT-based solution which allows monitoring/controlling battery storage systems, independently from the manufacturers’ cloud infrastructure. More specifically, a home gateway locally controls the battery storage using local APIs via Wi-Fi on the condition that the manufacturer enables them. If not, an auxiliary device allows the home gateway to establish a wired communication with the battery stora... [more]

Keywords: Europe and North Africa, hybrid HVAC-HVDC, renewable energy systems
Renewable energy sources (RESs) and electricity demand are not evenly distributed geographically across Europe. Thus, harvesting the wind energy from the north and solar energy from the south and delivering them to the demand in central Europe is a more viable solution. However, the present High-voltage alternating current (HVAC) transmission grids have been sometimes congested; thus, High-voltage direct current (HVDC) provides another possibility along the existing HVAC infrastructure. In this paper, we propose a hybrid HVAC-HVDC grid, allowing a large penetration of concentrated RES in Europe and North Africa. More specifically, the HVDC network is constructed to transfer wind and hydro electricity from northwestern Europe and solar electricity from north Africa, while the HVAC network is used to distribute electricity within each country or among adjacent areas. To quantitatively evaluate the feasibility and relevant performances, multiple dimensions of indicators are designed. Empl... [more]

In this study, we developed a 3D-model-based technology that can evaluate solar access by analyzing solar radiation and shade to find the optimal location for a solar system. We developed an algorithm that can quickly calculate viewshed by applying ray-casting technology, which is useful in the field of computer graphics. To apply the developed technology, an unmanned aerial vehicle (DJI MAVIC 3) was used to create a 3D model by taking 320 photos of the Kangwon National University Samcheok campus. To verify the developed technology, a comparison with image-based analysis using a 360-degree camera was performed for 30 points. As a result of applying the developed technology to the study area, it was possible to calculate the solar access for each point. In general, image-based analysis exaggerates the effects of objects such as trees, whereas the developed technique can produce realistic results if the 3D objects were well built. There is a significant energy transition in progress globally. This is mainly driven by the insertion of variable sources of energy, such as wind and solar power. To guarantee that the supply of energy meets its demand, energy storage technologies will play an important role in integrating these intermittent energy sources. Daily energy storage can be provided by batteries. However, there is still no technology that can provide weekly, monthly and seasonal energy storage services where pumped hydro storage is not a viable solution. Herein, we introduce an innovative energy storage proposal based on isothermal air compression/decompression and storage of the compressed air in the deep sea. Isothermal deep ocean compressed air energy storage (IDO-CAES) is estimated to cost from 1500 to 3000 USD/kW for installed capacity and 1 to 10 USD/kWh for energy storage. IDO-CAES should complement batteries, providing weekly, monthly and seasonal energy storage cycles in future sustainable energy gr... [more]
