Catarina Pinho Correia Valério Bernardo, Ricardo A. Marques Lameirinhas, João Paulo Neto Torres, António Baptista
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: economic analysis, nanostructures, photovoltaic technology, shading, solar energy, viability
Renewable resources for producing energy for self-consumption are growing, namely solar energy. This work focuses on the comparison of photovoltaic systems for energy production for self-consumption on a property in three different regions of Portugal using traditional and emerging technologies, without batteries’ implementation. According to Portuguese law, there is no stipulated value for selling surplus energy produced by a self consumption unit, to the public grid. In order to analyse the economic viability of the project, two scenarios are studied: the delivery, at zero cost of the surplus energy produced to the grid, and its sale. Furthermore, the same analysis is carried out considering partial shading on the photovoltaic generator. The results show that if there is no surplus production sale to the grid, the project becomes economically unviable for the four PV technologies. Otherwise, for the traditional technologies, the project is economically viable, presenting a payback ti... [more]

April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: gas hydrate promoters, hydrogen hydrate, hydrogen storage
Clathrate and semi-clathrate hydrates have recently been gaining major interest as hydrogen storage material. The benefits of hydrates, such as reversible formation and dissociation, their environmentally friendly nature, economical costs, and lower fire risk, make them one of the most promising hydrogen storage materials. One of the major challenges when storing hydrogen in hydrate crystals is the extreme pressure and temperature conditions required for the formation of hydrogen hydrates. Solving the problems of extreme pressure and temperature through the use of promoter molecules would make these materials a promising storage medium with high potential. Through the use of efficient, economical, and green promoter molecules, hydrogen hydrate can be used to store large amounts of hydrogen economically and safely. This review aims to present a comprehensive summary of the different hydrate promoters that have been tested specifically in terms of hydrogen storage. The hydrate promoters... [more]

Keywords: alkaline (earth) metals, chemical looping, hematite, lignite, transition metals
Chemical looping (CL) technology is a novel technology for the clean and efficient use of energy. Oxygen carriers (OCs) are the cornerstone of CL technology. The development of low−cost, high−performance OCs is crucial for the application of CL conversion. Hematite, one of the natural Fe−based OCs, has several advantages (e.g., low cost and environmental friendliness), but its low reactivity limits its application in CL. The performance of hematite can be effectively improved by modifying some of its active components. This study explored the improvement of hematite reactivity by adding alkaline (earth) metals (K, Na, and Ca) and transition metals (Ni, Cu, and Mn). The crystal phases of the OCs were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the results revealed that the addition of metals significantly changed the phase of the original hematite. The active solid solution of K−Fe−O and Na−Fe−O species exhibited strong catalytic activity to facilitate lignite char conversion. The... [more]

April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cooling methods, efficiency, heat sink, photovoltaic–thermoelectric generator
The photovoltaic panel has become the most promising alternative technology for energy demand. Solar trackers have been used to improve the efficiency of a photovoltaic panel to maximize the sun’s exposure. In high temperatures, however, the photovoltaic efficiency is significantly reduced. This study observes photovoltaic/thermoelectric generator performance driven by a dual-axis solar tracking system. A photovoltaic/thermoelectric generator panel was built and equipped with angle and radiation sensors. A microcontroller processes the sensor signal and drives the motor to follow the sun’s movement in two-axis directions. Thermocouples are mounted on the photovoltaic and thermoelectric generator surfaces to monitor the temperature. The result shows that the temperature of the photovoltaic/thermoelectric generator is lower than that of the photovoltaic one. However, a contradiction occurred in the output power. The efficiency of the combined photovoltaic/thermoelectric generator was 13.... [more]

April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Hydrogen, Ni catalyst, oil pyrolysis, Steam Reforming, waste plastic
Sustained increase in plastic use has placed a significant burden on waste disposal infrastructure. Pyrolysis is the process of decomposing high-molecular-weight compounds by heating waste plastics at 500−1000 °C without oxygen. This process considerably reduces greenhouse gas emissions and has a high alternative energy effect (0.57 TOE ton−1). After a separation process, the oil produced by pyrolysis (C5−C20) can yield naphtha oil (C6−C7). Subsequently, hydrogen can be produced through a reforming reaction of this naphtha oil. Here, we produced hydrogen from waste plastic pyrolysis oil over a Ni/Ce-Zr-Mg/Al2O3 catalyst using a steam reforming process. A model oil combining the major substances of C6 and C7 (hexane, hexene, heptane, heptene, and toluene) was formed. From the reaction products, the hydrogen yield was obtained based on analysis of H2, CO, and CO2 concentrations using gas chromatography. The effect of N2 and O2 addition on hydrogen yield was analyzed within a temperature... [more]
An Adaptive Matrix Method for the Solution of a Nonlinear Inverse Heat Transfer Problem and Its Experimental Verification
Piotr Duda, Mariusz Konieczny
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: complex shape, experimental verification, non-linear inverse problem, online
An adaptive matrix inverse (AMI) method is presented to identify the temperature and unknown boundary heat flux in a domain of a regular or irregular shape with temperature-dependent properties. The nonlinear problem is broken down into a number of linear submodels, and for each submodel, the temperature is obtained in measuring points. Next, based on the matching degree between the temperatures measured and calculated by each prediction submodel, the submodels are weighted and combined to create the full model for the solution of an inverse nonlinear heat transfer problem. Comparisons are also made with the existing multiple model adaptive inverse (MMAI) algorithm and method based on the Levenberg−Marquardt algorithm (LMA). The results of the presented numerical tests for undisturbed and disturbed “measuring” data indicate that the heat fluxes identified by the AMI method are close to the exact values. The application of the presented method for bodies with an irregular shape is also... [more]

Keywords: current error, current transformer, distorted current, distorted voltage, higher harmonics, instrument transformer, phase displacement, resonance, self-generation, transformation accuracy, voltage error, voltage transformer
Power grids are a combined system where the electrical energy produced by the power plants is transmitted to consumers. This forms a specific interdependence where the recipients have a significant impact on the power quality. Therefore, the nonlinear loads connected by households and industrial customers cause current and voltage distortion in the power networks. This creates the need for accurate measurement of nonsinusoidal voltage and current composed not only from the fundamental component but also containing higher harmonics, interharmonics, and subharmonics. In order to ensure high transformation accuracy of distorted current and voltage, the inductive instrument transformers have to be tested in these conditions. Many papers describe their behavior during the transformation of sinusoidal current or voltage. Nowadays, the scientific field in this scope is focused on the evaluation of their exploitation properties for distorted signals. The common problem of inductive instrument... [more]

Keywords: battery usage strategy, driving pattern recognition, FCS integration, fuel cell/battery, integrated EMS, online optimization, real-time control, stochastic operating conditions
Integrating hydrogen fuel cell systems (FCS) remains challenging in the expanding electric vehicle market. One of the levers to meet this challenge is the relevance of energy supervisors. This paper proposes an innovative energy management strategy (EMS) based on the integrated EMS (iEMS) concept. It uses a nested approach combining the best of the three EMS categories (optimization-based (OBS), rules-based (RBS), and learning-based (LBS) strategies) to overcome the real-time operating condition limitations of the fuel cell hybrid electric vehicle (FCHEV). Through a fuel cell/battery hybrid architecture, the purpose is to improve hydrogen consumption and manage the battery state of charge (SOC) under real-time driving conditions. The proposed iEMS approach is based on an OBS with optimal control to make the energy-optimal decision. However, it requires the adaptations of real-time operating conditions and a dynamic SOC horizon management. These requirements are supported by combining a... [more]

April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: conventional and nonconventional fuels, engine combustion process analysis, substitute fuels
The classification of engine fuels was systematised in the present study. The basic evaluation criterion included the type of raw material used for the production of motor fuel and the prevalence of its usage. There was a reason for the purposefulness of searching for new kinds of engine fuels not only for the sake of environmental protection but also for the rational use of natural resources. The concept of substitute fuels was methodically presented. The criteria for the qualification of substitute fuels for internal combustion engines were systematised. Using the example of fuels produced from bio-oils, tests were carried out to assess the prospects of considering bio-oil fuels as substitute ones for self-ignition engines. Accordingly, an analysis was, inter alia, conducted on the fuel combustion process in the cylinder of a test self-ignition engine. Based on the results obtained, the thesis was formulated that rapeseed methyl ester (RME) fuel can be considered a substitute fuel fo... [more]

Keywords: Biomass, pyrolysis, volatile–char interactions
The course of pyrolysis of pea husks was studied. It was stated that the compaction of a sample during its pyrolysis causes an almost two-fold increase in the content of hydrocarbons in the composition of volatile products in the temperature range of 350−470 °C. Low density polyethylene (LDPE), novolac, and coal tar pitch (CTP) wastes were added to feedstocks in the amount of 2 wt% in order to decrease the contribution of saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons along with oxygen-containing compounds in volatile products. The analysis of the obtained products of pyrolysis was conducted using the techniques of thermogravimetry/Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TG/FT-IR), attenuated total reflectance (ATR) and ultraviolet (UV)-spectroscopies, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCMS), X-ray diffractions (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). It was determined that pitch took the first place in a series of effectiveness in decreasing... [more]

Keywords: battery, Energy, Energy Efficiency, Energy Storage, lithium, numerical model, sustainability in energy systems, thermal runaway
Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have circumvented the energy storage landscape for decades. However, safety concerns about liquid−electrolyte-based LIBs have challenged their mobilization. Lithium polymer (LiPo) batteries have gained rising interest due to their high thermal stability. Despite an array of commercially available LiPo batteries, limited studies have ventured into modeling. Numerical simulations allow low-cost optimization of existing battery designs through parameter analysis and material configuration, leading to safer and more energy-efficient batteries. This work examined the electrochemical, thermal, and thermal runaway behavior of a lithium cobalt oxide cathode, graphite anode, and poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) electrolyte pouch-type LiPo battery using COMSOL Multiphysics®, and validated results with experimental data. The simulated potential curve exhibited strong agreement with experiment data, while the temperature profile during discharge displayed... [more]

Keywords: evaluation method, Hutubi UGS, pressure monitoring, underground natural gas storage
The regulation of the seasonal energy supply for natural gas and the storage of fossil energy are important to society. To achieve it, storing a large amount of natural gas in porous underground media is one of the government’s choices. Due to the successful lesson learned from the oil and gas industry, natural gas storage in underground porous media has been regarded as the most potential long−term energy storage method. In this paper, we developed a new workflow to evaluate the performance of gas reservoir−type underground natural gas storage (UGS). The theoretical background of this workflow includes the correction of the average formation pressure (AFP) and gas deviation factor by error theory and the analytical mathematical model of UGS wells. The Laplace transform, line source function, and Stehfest numerical inversion methods were used to obtain pressure solutions for typical vertical and horizontal wells in UGS. The pressure superposition principle and weighting method of the g... [more]

Given the concern for maintaining voltage stability in power systems integrated with renewable power systems due to a mismatch in generation and demand, there remains a need to invoke flexible alternating current transmission system (FACTS) devices in the distribution network. The present paper deals with identifying the locations of placement of a static var compensator in an experimental IEEE 14-bus system; the voltage drop in different buses in an IEEE 14-bus system is calculated by the standard formula. The total voltage drop in the network (TVDN) is also calculated as a reference. The ranking of buses in order of decreasing voltage drop is made, and the weak buses are identified as those showing the maximum or near-maximum voltage drop for the installation of a Static Var Compensator (SVC). The optimum usable size is calculated using a Genetic Algorithm approach to optimize the installation cost. After size optimization, installing a 2 MW solar generator is considered for the weak... A sliding mode control-based model reference adaptive system (SMC-MRAS) estimator for sensor-less control of doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) systems in wind turbine applications is proposed in this paper. The proposed SMC-MRAS estimator uses the rotor current as a variable of interest. The proposed SMC-MRAS estimator has the advantage of being immune to machine parameter variations. The SMC parameters are designed using the Lyapunov stability criteria. The performance of the proposed SMC-MRAS estimator is validated using simulations in MATLAB/SIMULINK. A comparative study between the proposed SMC-MRAS estimator and the PI-MRAS estimator is also conducted to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed SMC-MRAS estimator.

Keywords: energy self-consumption, mathematical modeling, multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM), Optimization, renewable energy community
By 2050, the European Union plans to make Europe the first carbon-neutral continent and a global leader in climate-green industries. Recently, many decisions have been taken in the world to ensure the energy transition from fossil fuel to renewable energy. The creation of renewable energy communities (REC) is among the solutions used to increase this transition. This study presents 16 different configurations for energy self-consumption in RECs containing different industrial factories. One mathematical model is proposed for each configuration, and they have been solved according to different criteria. The comparisons are made between these configurations according to economic, environmental, technical, and social criteria. Then, four multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods are used to choose the best configurations considering all the criteria. For this purpose, the achieved results from the mathematical models are used as input for the MCDM methods. The findings demonstrate tha... [more]

Keywords: heat transfer, insulating liquid, power transformers, temperature distribution
The power transformer plays an important role in electric power systems. One of the conditions for the proper operation of the transformer is to ensure a sufficiently low temperature. This condition can be met if the heat exchange is effective. Heat transfer depends, among other things, on the electrically insulating liquid. The thermal property describing the ability of a liquid to transfer heat is the heat transfer coefficient α. At the design stage of the transformers, it is most often assumed that the value of the α coefficient is constant and equal to 100 W·m−2·K−1. Such simplifications can lead to the improper design of the transformer since this factor depends on many factors. The article presents the results of research on the dependence of the heat transfer coefficient α on the type of electrical insulation liquid, the thermal load of the cooled surface, and the length of the heating element. Four types of electrical insulating liquids were considered: mineral oil, synthetic e... [more]

Keywords: condensation, contact angle, fluid density variation near wall, ghost fluid layer, lattice Boltzmann method
Various numerical schemes of contact angle are widely used in pseudopotential lattice Boltzmann model to simulate substrate contact angle in condensation. In this study, effects of numerical schemes of contact angle on condensation nucleation and heat transfer simulation are clarified for the first time. The three numerical schemes are pseudopotential-based contact angle scheme, pseudopotential-based contact angle scheme with a ghost fluid layer constructed on the substrate with weighted average density of surrounding fluid nodes, and the geometric formulation scheme. It is found that the subcooling condition destabilizes algorithm of pseudopotential-based contact angle scheme. However, with a ghost fluid layer constructed on the substrate or using geometric formulation scheme, the algorithm becomes stable. The subcooling condition also decreases the simulated contact angle magnitude compared with that under an isothermal condition. The fluid density variation near a microcavity wall s... [more]

Keywords: electric vehicles, empirical data analysis, power curve, public charging station, standard load profile
Electric vehicles are becoming dominant in the global automobile market due to their better environmental friendliness compared to internal combustion vehicles. An adequate network of public charging stations is required to fulfil the fast charging demands of EV users. Knowing the shape and amplitude of their power curves is essential for power purchase planning and grid capacity sizing. Based on a large-scale empirical and representative dataset, this paper creates standard load profiles for various power levels, station sizes, and operating environments. It is found that the average power per charge point increases with rated station power, particularly for a rated power above 100 kW, and decreases with the number of charge points per station for AC chargers. For AC chargers, it is revealed how the shape of the power curve largely depends on the environment of a station, with urban settings experiencing the highest average power of 0.71 kW on average leading to an annual energy sale... Keywords: city logistics, Customer as a Service Provider (CaaSP), Energy Efficiency, logistics service providers, low-emissions transport, urban deliveries
Smart cities need energy-efficient and low-emission transportation for people and goods. Most studies focus on sustainable urban-transportation systems for passengers. Freight transportation in cities has increased significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to greenhouse gases emissions and negative externalities, such as traffic congestion. The purpose of this paper is to identify through a systematic literature review which innovations (hardware and software) applied by logistics service providers (LSPs) in sustainable urban freight (SUF) are suitable to support the transition to energy-efficient smart cities. We propose to classify the existing innovations in last-mile delivery for SUF into categories: (1) urban freight consolidation and/or trans-shipment; (2) the Consumer as a Service Provider (CaaSP); (3) choice of transportation modes. We introduce the concept of CaaSP as an innovative solution in last-mile delivery (LMD), where customers take over some transport operati... [more]

Keywords: high-temperature degradation, high-temperature steam electrolysis, hydrogen production efficiency, Optimization, solid oxide electrolysis cell
Solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) have great application prospects because of their excellent performance, but the long-term applications of the stacks are restricted by the structural degradation under the high-temperature conditions. Therefore, an SOEC degradation model is developed and embedded in a process model of the high-temperature steam electrolysis (HTSE) system to investigate the influence of the stack degradation at the system level. The sensitivity analysis and optimization were carried out to study the influence factors of the stack degradation and system hydrogen production efficiency and search for the optimal operating conditions to improve the hydrogen production efficiency and mitigate the stack degradation. The analysis results show that the high temperature and large current density can accelerate the stack degradation but improve the hydrogen production efficiency, while the high temperature gradually becomes unfavorable in the late stage. The low air-to-fuel... [more]

Keywords: DC–DC boost converter, grid connection, inverter, photovoltaic (PV) cell, quasi Z-source, switched-inductor cell
The main drawback of DC-source-based renewable energy sources (RESs), such as photovoltaic (PV) panels or fuel cells (FCs), is that the voltage generated by a panel or cell is less than the required voltage for connection to a DC−AC inverter for grid applications. In this paper, a single-switched DC−DC boost converter equipped with a quasi-impedance source inverter (QZSI) with a modified switching model is proposed to increase the output voltage of these RESs and convert it to a fixed AC grid voltage for loads. By changing the position of the inductor in a classic step-up converter and using a switched-inductor block, the input current ripple is significantly decreased, and the reliability and long-life of the input sources are increased, which is the main contribution of this work. The quality of the generated AC voltage and the low amount of total harmonic distortion (THD) in the projected topology are significant, and no overshoot and undershoot have been reported for both output vo... Keywords: EV, heavy vehicles, hybrid powertrains, MBT
The performance of modern, new generation-armored vehicles would greatly benefit from overall engineering, optimization, and integration techniques of advanced diesel engines-electrified transmissions. Modern axial flux electric motors and controllers are perfectly able to replace the classical automatic gearbox and complex steering system of traditional Main Battle Tanks. This study shows a possible design of a serial hybrid electric power pack for very heavy tanks with a weight well over 50 tons. The result is a hybrid power system that improves the overall performance of armored vehicles off-road and on-road, improving the acceleration and the smoothness of the ride. In addition, fuel consumption will be reduced because the internal combustion engine operates at fixed rpm. The electric motors will outperform the traditional engines due to their very high torque output even at “zero speed”. The weight of a hybrid system has also been calculated. In fact, in many cases, it is possible... [more]

The rapid development of photovoltaic technology provides more possibilities for the efficient application of solar energy in buildings. This research proposed a phase change material (PCM) heat storage wall system with a “four-layer” structure. A performance test platform using low voltage DC was built to study the mechanism of electric thermal conversion of the graphene electrothermal film and the heat transfer characteristics of the “four-layer” structure. As shown in the experimental results, under the voltages of 24 V, 32 V and 42 V, (1) with the increase in voltage, the temperature of the electrothermal film increases, while its electrothermal conversion efficiency decreases from 85% to 75%; (2) during the heat storage process, because of its latent heat storage characteristics, the temperature of the PCM wallboard is 3~5 °C lower than that of the cement wallboard, but the effective heat storage increases by 59~65%; (3) during the heat release process, the effective heat release... Keywords: bus air conditioning and heat pump, optimal charging amount, refrigerant distribution, transcritical CO2 cycle
To mitigate the contemporary environmental challenges and to respect the regulations on the progressive ban of hydrofluorocarbons (HFC), natural fluid CO2 was selected as an ideal refrigerant alternative in the transportation domain. In this study, the optimal CO2 charging amount and the refrigerant distribution in a bus air conditioning/heat pump system were analyzed in detail. The results showed that there was a plateau (so named by the best charging amount) of the CO2 charging amount in which the system performance reached an optimal value and maintained it nearly unchanged during this plateau while the performance declined on both sides of the plateau. In addition, the ambient temperature was found to have little effect on the determination of the refrigerant charging plateau, while the refrigerant distribution was affected by the ambient temperature to some extent. Due to the large thermal load and thermal inertia on a bus, the data and conclusions obtained are different from thos... [more]
