April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bioheat transfer, dual-phase-lag model, Fibonacci polynomials, Fibonacci wavelets, hyperthermia treatment, initial and boundary conditions, multilayer skin tissue, tumor
In this article, a novel wavelet collocation method based on Fibonacci wavelets is proposed to solve the dual-phase-lag (DPL) bioheat transfer model in multilayer skin tissues during hyperthermia treatment. Firstly, the Fibonacci polynomials and the corresponding wavelets along with their fundamental properties are briefly studied. Secondly, the operational matrices of integration for the Fibonacci wavelets are built by following the celebrated approach of Chen and Haiso. Thirdly, the proposed method is utilized to reduce the underlying DPL model into a system of algebraic equations, which has been solved using the Newton iteration method. Towards the culmination, the effect of different parameters including the tissue-wall temperature, time-lag due to heat flux, time-lag due to temperature gradient, blood perfusion, metabolic heat generation, heat loss due to diffusion of water, and boundary conditions of various kinds on multilayer skin tissues during hyperthermia treatment are brief... Thermal Analysis of a Solar External Receiver Tube with a Novel Component of Guide Vanes
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: external receiver, guide vane, heat transfer, molten salt, solar power tower
The heat transfer performance of a solar external receiver tube with guide vanes was numerically studied under non-uniform heat flux conditions. Models of the smooth tube and the tube with guide vanes were built. The distributions of the temperature, velocity, turbulence intensity, and Nu predicted by these two models were compared to investigate the heat transfer enhancement and the mixing effect of the guide vanes. The effect of the Re and the α on the heat transfer enhancement was also studied. The results show that the guide vanes form spiraling flows, reduce the maximum tube and molten salt temperatures, and improve the heat transfer. In addition, a more uniform temperature distribution is achieved compared to the smooth tube, allowing the molten salt to work safely under higher heat flux conditions in the receiver tube with guide vanes. It was observed that a larger Re enhances the heat transfer on the tube wall and achieves a longer effective distance of enhanced heat transfer i... [more]

Solar Radiation on a Parabolic Concave Surface
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: non-uniform incident radiation, parabolic concave surface, self-shading
Curved structures are used in buildings and may be integrated with photovoltaic modules. Self-shading occurs on non-flat (curved) surface collectors resulting in a non-uniform distribution of the direct beam and the diffuse incident solar radiation along the curvature the surface. The present study uses analytical expressions for calculating and analyzing the incident solar radiation on a general parabolic concave surface. Concave surfaces facing north, south and east/west are considered, and numerical values for the annual incident irradiations (in kWh) are demonstrated for two locations: 32° N (Tel Aviv, Israel) and 52.2° N (Lindenberg, Germany). The numerical results show that the difference in the incident global irradiation for the different surface orientations is not very wide. At 32° N, the irradiation difference between the south and north-oriented surface is about 15 percent, and between the south and east surface orientation it is about 9.6 percent. For latitu... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, automotive, Batteries, electric vehicles, energy reliability, hybrid vehicles, improved generalization, online application, parallel layer extreme learning machine, state of health
The online estimation of battery state of health (SOH) is crucial to ensure the reliability of the energy supply in electric and hybrid vehicles. An approach for enhancing the generalization of SOH estimation using a parallel layer extreme learning machine (PL-ELM) algorithm is analyzed in this paper. The deterministic and stable PL-ELM model is designed to overcome the drift problem that is associated with some conventional machine learning algorithms; hence, extending the application of a single SOH estimation model over a large set of batteries of the same type. The PL-ELM model was trained with selected features that characterize the SOH. These features are acquired as the discrete variation of indicator variables including voltage, state of charge (SOC), and energy releasable by the battery. The model training was performed with an experimental battery dataset collected at room temperature under a constant current load condition at discharge phases. Model validation was performed... New Insights into Crust and upper Mantle Structure in Guangdong Province, China and Its Geothermal Implications
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: 2D inversion, crust-upper mantle structure, geothermal energy, Guangdong Province, Late Mesozoic granite, magnetotellurics
Southeast Asia contains significant natural geothermal resources. However, the mechanism for generating geothermal anomalies by the crust−mantle structure still needs to define. In this study, we focused on Guangdong Province, China. We conducted three magnetotelluric profiles to interpret the crust and upper mantle structure beneath the Guangdong Province and its geothermal implications. Based on data analysis results, a two-dimension inversion was conducted on the dataset. The inversion model revealed that there is a presence of upwelling channels, and some channels are connected with shallow crustal fault zone; the thickness of crust and lithosphere in Guangdong Province is relatively thin. Such a special crust and upper mantle structure form high surface heat flow. Merged with previous research, our results imply that massive Late Mesozoic granites, which contain high radioactive heat generating elements, are distributed on the surface and underground of Guangdong Province. Effects of Module Spatial Distribution on the Energy Efficiency and Electrical Output of Automotive Thermoelectric Generators
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy harvesting, series parallel connection, TEG, thermoelectricity
Automotive thermoelectric generators (ATEGs) are devices used to harvest waste energy from the exhaust gases of internal combustion engines. An ATEG is essentially formed by three main elements: (1) heat absorber in contact with exhaust gases; (2) thermoelectric modules that directly convert heat into electricity; (3) heat sink to increase the heat transfer through the system. Thermoelectric modules (TEM) are commonly based on small-scale commercial units, with tenths of them needed to assemble a full ATEG device. Thus, several thermal and electrical connections between TEMs can be implemented. Previous studies focused on the implications on the output power. Here, we investigated the effects of using different module connections on the energy efficiency and on the electrical outputs (voltage and current). The study was carried out numerically with ATEGs that used from 4 to 100 individual TEMs. Series, parallel and square connections were investigated under two different engine operati... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: antenna array, digital pre-distortion (DPD), linearization, multiple input multiple output (MIMO), over-the-air (OTA)
Transmitter antenna arrays are typically coupled to several RF chains, which imposes stringent requirements on the linearization of each power amplifier (PA) present in the system. For this and other reasons discussed in this work, Over-the-air (OTA) linearization methods are considered to linearize transmitter antenna arrays in 5G scenarios. However, several factors need to be considered when applying OTA linearization methods. In this paper, an extended critical review of validated OTA linearization methods is presented. The main goal is to point out and discuss the most prominent methods, in order to determine which one is the most suitable for a specific application. In particular, analysis for each method is performed and, subsequently, their benefits and the disadvantages are systematically discussed. This is sought to fill-in a gap in the scientific literarure and, thus, to help radio-frequency engineers in the implementation of OTA digital pre-distortion (DPD) techniques for mu... [more]

Steady State Experimental Characterization of a Twin Entry Turbine under Different Admission Conditions
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: experimental, steady flow, turbine, turbocharging, twin entry
The increasingly restrictive limits on exhaust emissions of automotive internal combustion engines imposed in recent years are pushing OEMs to seek new solutions to improve powertrain efficiency. Despite the increase in electric and hybrid powertrains, the turbocharging technique is still one of the most adopted solution in automotive internal combustion engines to achieve good efficiency with high specific power levels. Nowadays, turbocharged downsized engines are the most common solution to lower CO2 emissions. Pulse turbocharging is the most common boosting layout in automotive applications as the best response in terms of time-to-boost and exhaust energy extraction. In a high-fractionated engine with four or more cylinders, a twin entry turbine can be adopted to maximize pulse turbocharging benefits and avoid interaction in the discharge phase of the cylinders. The disadvantages of the twin entry turbine are mainly due to the complexity of the exhaust piping line and the high amoun... [more]

Effect of Temperature Conditions on Flame Evolutions of Turbulent Jet Ignition
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combustion modes, ignition characteristics, pressure wave, temperature conditions, turbulent jet ignition
Turbulent jet ignition technology can significantly improve lean combustion stability and suppress engine knocking. However, the narrow jet channel between the pre-chamber and the main chamber leads to some difficulties in heat exchange, which significantly affects combustion performance and mechanical component lifetime. To clarify the effect of temperature conditions on combustion evolutions of turbulent jet ignition, direct numerical simulations with detailed chemical kinetics were employed under engine-relevant conditions. The flame propagation in the pre-chamber and the early-stage turbulent jet ignition in the main chamber were investigated. The results show that depending on temperature conditions, two types of flame configuration can be identified in the main chamber, i.e., the normal turbulent jet flame propagation and the spherical flame propagation, and the latter is closely associated with pressure wave disturbance. Under low-temperature conditions, the cold jet stoichiomet... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CO emissions, combustion zone, fuel consumption, miniature gas turbine, NOx emissions, water fuel emulsion
Miniature gas turbines (MGT) are an important part of the production of electric energy in distributed systems. Due to the growing requirements for lower emissions and the increasing prices of hydrocarbon fuels, it is becoming more and more important to enhance the efficiency and improve the quality of the combustion process in gas turbines. One way to reduce NOx emissions is to add water to the fuel in the form of a water-based emulsion (FWE). This article presents the research results and the analysis of the impact of the use of FWE on CO and NOx emissions as well as on fuel consumption in MGT GTM-120. Experimental tests and numerical calculations were carried out using standard fuel (DF) and FWE with water content from 3% to 12%. It was found that the use of FWE leads to a reduction in NOx and CO emissions and reduction in the consumption of basic fuel. Impact of Advanced Load-Frequency Control on Optimal Size of Battery Energy Storage in Islanded Microgrid System
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery energy storage system, islanded microgrid, load frequency control, optimal sizing
The application of battery energy storage (BES) in microgrid systems has attracted much attention in recent years. It is because the BES is able to store excess power and discharge its power when needed. In islanded microgrid systems, BES is starting to be considered as a unit that can regulate the system frequency. The control used in the BES to display frequency regulation performance is called load-frequency control (LFC). However, this participation resulted in the large size of the battery and high expansion planning cost. In this paper, an advanced LFC control that has frequency limitation compared to traditional LFC is proposed. The proposed control implies droop control as the base and has frequency limitations. Compared to the traditional LFC, the proposed control can reduce the system expansion planning costs. A performance simulation was done to validate battery performance. The results of the numerical simulation showed that the proposed control participated in reducing the... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: carbon capture and storage (CCS), CO2 geological storage, directional permeability, permeability
This study conducted core sampling of an offshore borehole for geological reservoir characterization of a potential CO2 storage site in southeast Korea. From this, two promising geological formations at ~739 and ~779 m were identified as prospective CO2 storage reservoirs. Injection efficiency and CO2 migration were evaluated based on directional measurements of permeabilities from core plugs. The directional transport properties were determined using both a portable probe permeameter and a pressure cell capable of applying different in situ confining pressures. Both steady state and unsteady state measurements were used to determine permeability—the method selected according to the expected permeability range of the specific sample. This expected range was based on rapid screening measurements acquired using a portable probe permeameter (PPP). Anticipated performance of the prototypical CO2 injection site was evaluated based on flow modeling of the CO2 plume migration pathway includin... [more]

Contribution of Wind Farms to the Stability of Power Systems with High Penetration of Renewables
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: droop control, fast frequency response, inertia emulation, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, wind power systems
Power system inertia is being reduced because of the increasing penetration of renewable energies, most of which use power electronic interfaces with the grid. This paper analyses the contribution of inertia emulation and droop control to the power system stability. Although inertia emulation may appear the best option to mitigate frequency disturbances, a thorough analysis of the shortcomings that face real-time implementations shows the opposite. Measurement noise and response delay for inertia emulation hinder controller performance, while the inherently fast droop response of electronic converters provides better frequency support. System stability, expressed in terms of rate of change of frequency (ROCOF) and frequency nadir, is therefore improved with droop control, compared to inertia emulation.

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: feasibility, multi criteria decision analysis, photovoltaics, solar energy, solar farm
The growth of solar energy is projected to slow down during 2023−25 despite the fall in costs due to economic deceleration, reduced incentives, and market barriers including the lack of relevant and flexible energy project planning and decision-making tools. This study proposes a flexible and computationally simple multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA)-based model that takes technical, financial, environmental, social and legal aspects of all project options as input and outputs a feasibility score for each option, which enables ranking the options and identifying the best alternative. The proposed model is applied to a real-world photovoltaic solar farm planned at a site in England and comprising nine different configurations formed by varying system capacity, energy storage option, mode of stakeholder, and network connections. Nonequilibrium Entropy Conservation and the Transport Equations of Mass, Momentum, and Energy
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy applications, Energy Efficiency, second law, theory of entropy conservation
Nonequilibrium statistical mechanics or molecular theory has put the transport equations of mass, momentum and energy on a firm or rigorous theoretical foundation that has played a critical role in their use and applications. Here, it is shown that those methods can be extended to nonequilibrium entropy conservation. As already known, the “closure” of the transport equations leads to the theory underlying the phenomenological laws, including Fick’s Law of Diffusion, Newton’s Law of Viscosity, and Fourier’s Law of Heat. In the case of entropy, closure leads to the relationship of entropy flux to heat as well as the Second Law or the necessity of positive entropy generation. It is further demonstrated how the complete set of transport equations, including entropy, can be simplified under physically restrictive assumptions, such as reversible flows and local equilibrium flows. This analysis, in general, yields a complete, rigorous set of transport equations for use in applications. Finall... [more]

Simulation Verification of Overcurrent Protection Operation in Power Networks Integrating Renewable Energy Sources in Energy Communities
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: distributed generation, energy communities, power system protection, protection system testing
This publication discusses the risks of further use of classical overcurrent protections in modern power systems. The increasing penetration of renewable energy sources has caused a lot of challenges, among other things, the development of energy communities that balance local generation and consumption. Usually the interconnection line between the energy community and power systems are only used to balance the shortage or overflow of energy. As a result, most of the time these connections can be low loaded. Such a state can cause incorrect operation of power system protection approached, because the current level values are smaller than the required activation level for the protections. This article presents the potential incorrect operation of digital power system protection with overcurrent function. The obtained simulation results clearly show that the correctness of protection operation is strongly dependent on the level load of lines and the parameters and structure of the protec... [more]

Keywords: discrete element method, gravity-driven granular flow, heat transfer enhancement, oscillation, pin-fin plate
In this paper, the heat transfer of pin-fin plate unit (PFPU) under static and oscillating conditions are numerically studied using the discrete element method (DEM). The flow and heat transfer characteristics of the PFPU with sinusoidal oscillation are investigated under the conditions of oscillating frequency of 0−10 Hz, amplitude of 0−5 mm and oscillating direction of Y and Z. For the basic single stage cycle, the exergy destruction is mainly accrued in the desorber (49%), followed by the adsorber (27%), evaporator (13%), condenser (9%), and expansion valve (2%). The exergy destruction for the preheating process is approximately 35% of the total exergy destruction in the desorber. By contrast, the precooling process is almost 58% of the total exergy destruction in the adsorber. The exergy destruction decreases when increasing the recooling-water and the dead state temperatures, while the exergy effici... [more]
