Compositional Simulation of Geological and Engineering Controls on Gas Huff-n-Puff in Duvernay Shale Volatile Oil Reservoirs, Canada
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Duvernay shale, EDFM, huff-n-puff, sensitivity analysis, volatile oil
Duvernay shale is a world class shale deposit with a total resource of 440 billion barrels oil equivalent in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin (WCSB). The volatile oil recovery factors achieved from primary production are much lower than those from the gas-condensate window, typically 5−10% of original oil in place (OOIP). The previous study has indicated that huff-n-puff gas injection is one of the most promising enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods in shale oil reservoirs. In this paper, we built a comprehensive numerical compositional model in combination with the embedded discrete fracture model (EDFM) method to evaluate geological and engineering controls on gas huff-n-puff in Duvernay shale volatile oil reservoirs. Multiple scenarios of compositional simulations of huff-n-puff gas injection for the proposed twelve parameters have been conducted and effects of reservoir, completion and depletion development parameters on huff-n-puff are evaluated. We concluded that fracture cond... [more]

Farmer Interest in and Willingness to Grow Pennycress as an Energy Feedstock
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: interest, oilseed cover crops, pennycress, willingness to grow
Pennycress can be used as a renewable biomass because its harvested seeds can be converted into biofuel, supplying, for example the aviation industry. Pennycress can be adopted as a winter cover crop to make extra profit in addition to summer cash crops. This study ascertains influences on row crop farmers’ interest in growing pennycress to supply a biofuels industry. The study uses data from a survey of row-crop farmers in seven US states. Effects of farm and farmer attributes on acceptance of a farmgate pennycress price are measured. Nearly 58% were interested in growing pennycress if profitable. Among those interested, 54.4% would accept the farmgate pennycress price offered. Positive influences on interest included farm size, education, and familiarity with pennycress, while concern about knowledge on growing pennycress, and use of no-till practices had negative influences. Farmers aged 40 to 65 were more likely to accept the price, while share of rented hectares and no debt had po... [more]

A Fundamental Study on the Development of New Energy Performance Index in Office Buildings
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: building energy, curtain wall building, EnergyPlus, window properties, window-to-floor ratio
Recently, there have been significant concerns regarding excessive energy use in office buildings with a large window-to-wall ratio (WWR) because of the curtain wall structure. However, prior research has confirmed that the impact of the window area on energy consumption varies depending on building size. A newly proposed window-to-floor ratio (WFR) correlates better with energy consumption in the building. In this paper, we derived the correlation by analyzing a simulation using EnergyPlus, and the results are as follows. In the case of small buildings, the results of this study showed that the WWR and energy requirement increase proportionally, and the smaller the size is, the higher the energy sensitivity will be. However, results also confirmed that this correlation was not established for buildings approximately 3600 m2 or larger. Nevertheless, from analyzing the correlation between the WFR and the energy requirements, it could be deduced that energy required increased proportiona... [more]

Wide Range Series Resonant DC-DC Converter with a Reduced Component Count and Capacitor Voltage Stress for Distributed Generation
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bidirectional switch, conversion efficiency, series resonant converter (SRC), wide range voltage regulation
This paper proposes a galvanically isolated dc-dc converter that can regulate the input voltage in a wide range. It is based on the series resonance dc-dc converter (SRC) topology and a novel boost rectifier. The proposed topology has a smaller number of semiconductors than its SRC-based existing topologies employing an ac-switch in the boost rectifier. The proposed dc-dc converter comprises only two diodes and one switch at the output side, while the existing solutions use two switches and two diodes to step up the voltage. The proposed converter boosts the input voltage within a single boosting interval in the positive half-cycle of the switching period. In addition, the resonant current in the negative half-cycle is sinusoidal, which could enhance the converter efficiency. The resonant capacitor voltage is clamped at the level of the output voltage. Therefore, the voltage stress of the capacitor could significantly reduce at various input voltage and power levels. This makes it perf... [more]

Performance of a Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine with Various Convergent Nozzles and Chamber Lengths
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: counter-propagation, detonation, injection recovery, rotating detonation rocket engine, wave dynamics
A rotating detonation rocket engine (RDRE) with various convergent nozzles and chamber lengths is investigated. Three hundred hot-fire tests are performed using methane and oxygen ranging from equivalence ratio equaling 0.5−2.5 and total propellant flow up to 0.680 kg/s. For the full-length (76.2 mm) chamber study, three nozzles at contraction ratios ϵc = 1.23, 1.62 and 2.40 are tested. Detonation is exhibited for each geometry at equivalent conditions, with only fuel-rich operability slightly increased for the ϵc = 1.62 and 2.40 nozzles. Despite this, counter-propagation, i.e., opposing wave sets, becomes prevalent with increasing constriction. This is accompanied by higher number of waves, lower wave speed Uwv and higher unsteadiness. Therefore, the most constricted nozzle always has the lowest Uwv. In contrast, engine performance increases with constriction, where thrust and specific impulse linearly increase with ϵc for equivalent conditions, with a 27% maximum increase. Additional... [more]

The Impact of Economic and Non-Economic Incentives to Induce Residential Demand Response—Findings from a Living Lab Experiment
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: (non)-economic incentives, behavioral change, COVID-19 pandemic, energy consumption behavior, flexibility, living lab, residential demand response, smart home, technology acceptance, technology adoption
This study assesses the impact of economic and non-economic incentives to induce demand response in private households. The experiment was realized by a three-months residential phase in which two tenants lived in the Energy Smart Home Lab, an experimental lab with the equipment of a modern smart home. The tenants received calls to action (CtAs) on a regular basis, incentivized economically or by moral nudges with a social or environmental background. A mixed-methods approach, consisting of smart meter data analysis, a value scale assessment, surveys and interviews, assessed the tenants’ reactions on their energy consumption behavior towards the CtAs. The smart meter data shows that the tenants performed the majority of CtAs, revealing no significant difference between economic or non-economic incentives. Results from the value scale, the interviews and the surveys indicate that this behavior might be due to the tenants’ high tendency towards biospheric and altruistic values and a high... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biofuels, molecular analysis, pyrolysis, ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry
Biofuel produced from biomass pyrolysis is a good example of a highly complex mixture. Detailed understanding of its composition is a prerequisite for optimizing transformation processes and further upgrading conditions. The major challenge in understanding the composition of biofuel derived from biomass is the wide range of compounds with high diversity in polarity and abundance that can be present. In this work, a comprehensive analysis using mass spectrometry is reported. Different operation conditions are studied by utilizing multiple ionization methods (positive mode atmospheric pressure photo ionization (APPI), atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) and electrospray ionization (ESI) and negative mode ESI) and applying different resolving power set-ups (120 k, 240 k, 480 k and 960 k) and scan techniques (full scan and spectral stitching method) to study the complexity of a pyrolysis biofuel. Using a mass resolution of 960 k and the spectral stitching scan technique gives... [more]

Differences of Carbon Emission Efficiency in the Belt and Road Initiative Countries
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: carbon emission efficiency, differences, the Belt and Road Initiative, the Logarithmic Mean Divisia index, the Theil index
Carbon emission efficiency, which is mainly affected by economic output, energy efficiency and energy structure, is the effect of carbon emissions generated in economic activities. Improving carbon emission efficiency and narrowing regional differences are very important for green development in Belt and Road Initiative regions with developing countries as the main body. The existing literature mostly uses the Theil index to study the temporal differences in carbon emission efficiency, but spatial differences and the reasons for the differences have rarely been examined. This paper measures the differences of carbon emission efficiency using the Theil index and examines the reasons based on the Logarithmic Mean Divisia index (LMDI) method in five groups of 60 Belt and Road Initiative countries. The results show that the Theil index of carbon emission efficiency in these countries is 0.196, with an intra-group difference of 0.165 and an inter-group difference of 0.031. Between most of t... Effect of Magnesium Additives on Phosphorous Recovery during Sewage Sludge Combustion and Further Improvement of Bioavailable Phosphorous
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bioavailability, combustion, drop tube furnace, magnesium, phosphorous, sewage sludge
Sewage sludge (SS), a solid waste taking up a large amount of public resources, contains abundant phosphorous and urgently needs appropriate recovery, but incineration, the existing popular SS treatment method, fails to reuse phosphorous as a feasible product due to the poor phosphorous bioavailability of SS ash. Based on the mono-combustion of SS, magnesian minerals comprising of magnesium oxide were doped with SS to carry out the behavior of magnesium in phosphorous capture and its sensitivity to subsequent thermochemical modification. Five percent MgO improved phosphorous capture, and its effectiveness was disturbed by sulfur at 900 °C. The more H2O that was pumped into the atmosphere, the more phosphorous was captured by 5% MgO. The capacity of MgO in phosphorous capture was inferior to that of CaO. The utilization efficiency of MgO for phosphorous capture was inferior to that of CaO. A total of 7.2% MgO succeeded in recovering 97.46% phosphorous with 5% H2O at 900 °C. A total of 1... [more]

Inventories of Short-Lived Fission Gas Nuclides in Nuclear Reactors
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: burnup, fission gaseous nuclides, inventory, reactor power, source term
Taking inventories in reactor cores is critical for understanding their radioactive source terms and establishing the relationship between the activity concentration in the primary loop and the status of the reactor core’s fuel. However, there is a niche in which a simple but accurate relationship between reactor conditions and nuclide inventories can reliably predict the fission gas nuclide activities of the reactor core in the primary loop. In this study, a simple and efficient model called “Inventories of a Point Reactor for Fission Gas Nuclides” (IPRFGN) was proposed to calculate and interpret such inventories, in which a 10 MW high-temperature gas-cooled experimental reactor (HTR-10) was used as the test case. The present study findings were consistent with those of a general point−depletion burnup code such as the KORIGEN code. Here, the relative error was <1%. Based on the application of the IPRFGN model in HTR-10, the results indicate that the proposed IPRFGN model has provi... [more]

Reliability Enhancement of Fast Charging Station under Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment Failures and Repairs
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: charging reliability, charging resource availability, DC fast charging, electric vehicles, EV user satisfaction
This work focuses on the enhancement of the charging reliability of both scheduled (SEVs) and opportunistic (UEVs) electric vehicle (EV) users in an EV fast charging station (FCS). The proposed charging coordination strategies allow UEVs to exploit unused charging resources to optimally utilize the limited charging resources of FCS. However, the optimum utilization of limited charging resources of an FCS while assuring a reliable charging process for plugged-in EVs under random failures of electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) is a real challenge for the FCS controller. When the FCS admits UEVs in addition to SEVs, assuring a satisfactory quality of service to both EV user categories is also dispensable. Therefore, we analyze the performance of reservation of off-board mobile chargers (MOBCs) to enhance the charging reliability of EV users while achieving high charging resource utilization. This work proposes resource allocation and charging coordination strategies for an FCS where... [more]

The Concept and Understanding of Synchronous Stability in Power Electronic-Based Power Systems
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: converter, phase-locked loop, power electronic-based power system stability, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, synchronous stability
Synchronous stability in power systems is of essential importance for system safety and operation. For the phase-locked loop (PLL)-based synchronous stability in power electronic-based power systems, which has recently stimulated interest in researchers in the field of electrical power engineering, but is still controversial, this paper divides the topic into two aspects, including the PLL device stability and the system stability. It is found that the PLL device is always stable and the error between the PLL output angle θpll and the terminal voltage angle θt is always finite. Therefore, the synchronization of power electronic-based power systems should be understood as the output synchronization between the electrical rotation vectors (θt or θpll) from each item of grid-tied equipment, rather than the synchronization of the PLL device itself. In addition, it is found that θpll plays an active role in the system synchronization dynamics not only in electromagnetic timescales but also... [more]

Research on Temperature Rise of Type IV Composite Hydrogen Storage Cylinders in Hydrogen Fast-Filling Process
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fast-filling, hydrogen storage cylinder, numerical simulation, temperature rise
The internal pressure and temperature of type IV on-board hydrogen storage cylinders constantly change during the hydrogen fast-filling process. In this work, a 2D axisymmetric computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is established to study the temperature rise of hydrogen storage cylinders during the fast-filling process. The hydrogen filling rate, ambient temperature, volume, and hydrogen inlet temperature were investigated to evaluate their effects on temperature rise inside the cylinders. The effects of the inlet pressure rise and pre-cooling patterns on the temperature rise of large-volume type IV hydrogen storage cylinders are analyzed, and the optimal filling strategy is determined. The research results show that a greater filling rate causes a higher hydrogen temperature rise at the end. The ambient temperature increases linearly with the maximum hydrogen temperature and decreases linearly with the state of charge (SOC). As the volume increases, the temperature rise of the cyl... Keywords: conversion, Hydrogen, methane, Modelling, Natural Gas, non-catalytic partial oxidation, reactor, synthesis gas
The review contains a comparative analysis of studies on the production of hydrogen and syngas based on the processes of partial oxidation of natural gas and other types of gas feedstock. The results presented in the literature show the high potential of non-catalytic autothermal processes of partial oxidation of hydrocarbons for the development of gas chemistry and energetics. The partial oxidation of hydrocarbons makes it possible to overcome such serious shortcomings of traditional syngas production technologies as technological complexity and high energy and capital intensity. The features of non-catalytic partial oxidation of hydrocarbon gases, the obtained experimental results and the results of kinetic modeling of various options for the implementation of the process, which confirm the adequacy of the kinetic mechanisms used for the analysis, are considered in detail. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flow and heat transfer, mathematical model, microencapsulated phase change slurry, numerical simulation, thermal regulation, thermal storage
Microencapsulated phase change slurry (MEPCS), prepared by mixing microencapsulated phase change materials (MEPCMs) with water or other carrier fluids, is widely used in different applications such as for thermal regulation or heat storage systems. The transient thermal-hydraulic behavior accompanying the phase change process of the MEEPCS has a significant impact on the system performance. However, the heat and mass transfer during the phase change of the MEPCS is a complex multiscale process, due to the complex phase change of small particles and the complex coupling between the particles and carrier fluids. The numerical methods have been proved to be efficient and powerful means to investigate such complex phase change problems. However, the mathematical model is the critical factor determining the accuracy of the numerical methods, and is still under development. This review summarized the mathematical models proposed for the thermal-hydraulic processes of the MEPCS, compared the... [more]

Frequency Stabilization in an Interconnected Micro-Grid Using Smell Agent Optimization Algorithm-Tuned Classical Controllers Considering Electric Vehicles and Wind Turbines
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electric vehicles, frequency regulation, micro-grid, PID controller, smell agent optimization, wind turbine
In micro-grids (MGs), renewable energy resources (RESs) supply a major portion of the consumer demand. The intermittent nature of these RESs and the stochastic characteristics of the loads cause a frequency stabilization issue in MGs. Owing to this, in the present manuscript, the authors try to uncover the frequency stabilization/regulation issue (FRI) in a two-area MG system comprising wind turbines (WTs), an aqua-electrolyzer, a fuel cell, a bio-gas plant, a bio-diesel plant, diesel generation (DG), ship DG, electric vehicles and their energy storage devices, flywheels, and batteries in each control area. With these sources, the assessment of the FRI is carried out using different classical controllers, namely, the integral (I), proportional plus I (PI), and PI plus derivative (PID) controllers. The gain values of these I, PI, and PID controllers are tuned using the recently proposed smell agent optimization (SAO) algorithm. The simulation studies reveal the outstanding performance o... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coal-measure shale reservoir, continental shale, logging, marine shale, marine–continental transitional shale, organic carbon content, shale reservoir
Total organic carbon content is the important parameter in determining the quality of hydrocarbon source rocks. To accurately evaluate the TOC parameters of shale reservoirs and coal-measure shale reservoirs, the method to improve the accuracy of a reservoir TOC parameter calculation is investigated using the continental shale A1 well, the marine shale B1 well, and the marine-continental transitional shale C1 well as examples. Each of the three wells characterize a different paleoenvironmental regime. The ∆log R method based on natural gamma spectroscopy logging is proposed to calculate the TOC of shale reservoirs, and the dual ∆log R method based on natural gamma spectroscopy logging is proposed to calculate the TOC of coal-measure shale reservoirs. The results show that the proposed new method can reduce the absolute error by about 0.06~7.34 and the relative error by about 6.75~451.54% in the TOC calculation of three wells.
