April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Modelling, wind power plant (WPP), wind turbine (WT), wind turbine generator unit (WTGU), wind turbine power coefficient
The load demand to a power grid, as well as the interest in clean and low-cost energy resources, has led to the high integration of wind power plants into power system grids. There are grid code standards that are set for the design and integration of these wind power plants. These codes often look at the design operation of the wind power plant in islanded mode, where possible analysis of the most sensitive power system quantities such as voltage, frequency, reactive power, etc. is carried out. Therefore, in this study, attention was paid to the application of these codes to keep the design and integration of wind power plants well standardized as much as possible. The purpose of this paper is to review and discuss the literature and theory about the design of wind turbine generators and model and simulate a large-scale wind power plant. The modeling was successfully carried out on RSCAD, and the results obtained show that the wind power plant can be further used for other studies suc... [more]
A Novel ZVS/ZCS Push-Pull LC Resonant DC-DC Converter for Energy Sources
You-Kun Tai, Kuo-Ing Hwu
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DC-DC converter, push-pull topology, resonant converter, zero current switching, zero voltage switching
In this paper, a novel soft switching push-pull LC resonant DC-DC converter for energy sources is presented. In a high step-up converter, the input of primary side possesses low voltage and high current, so the losses caused by the current account for most of the total power loss. At the same time, the high-voltage stress of the high-voltage output components on the secondary side is also a major problem. Therefore, a high-gain isolated push-pull converter with a secondary-side resonant circuit is proposed, so that the primary-side switches have zero voltage switching (ZVS) and the secondary-side diodes have zero current switching (ZCS). The push-pull structure can reduce the number of active switches, so that the total power loss on the primary side can be reduced. The converter has a resonant tank circuit arranged between the secondary side of isolation transformer and the high-voltage output rectification module. The high-voltage output rectifier module adopts a full-bridge architec... [more]

April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: building simulation, excess renewable energy, thermal energy storage
In electrical grids with a high renewable percentage, weather conditions have a greater impact on power generation. This can lead to the overproduction of electricity during periods of substantial wind power generation, resulting in shutoffs of wind turbines. To reduce such shutoffs and to bridge periods of lower electricity production, three thermal energy storage systems (TESs) have been developed for space heating and domestic hot water. These include a water-based thermal system (WBTS), a thermally activated building system (TABS), and a high-temperature stone storage system (HTSS). The paper explains the development of computer models used to simulate the systems and their successful verification using field measurements. Target values to cover about 90% of building heating demand with excess electricity were found to be achievable, with performance ratios depending on storage size, particularly for WBTS and HTSS. The TABS’ storage capacity is limited by building geometry and the... [more]

April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Biomass, boudouard reaction, char combustion, downdraft gasifier, gasification, kinetics, pyrolysis, Simulation, spruce, steam gasification
In this study, biomass−specific gasification data is experimentally collected for numerical simulations of fixed−bed reactors. Since biomass properties vary, it is crucial to have characteristic biomass data. Extensive data is collected to determine an appropriate description of specific biomass behavior, including basic data (e.g., heating value, size, densities, ultimate and total analysis etc.), biomass pyrolysis and heterogeneous gasification reaction data. Heterogeneous reactions were comparatively investigated in the forms of powder, particles, and a fixed−bed. The powder was investigated in depth with CO2, O2, and H2O (gas fraction 5−20 vol.%; temperature CO2, O2 and H2O, respectively, at 730−790 °C, 360−405 °C, 720−780 °C), while particle reactions and fixed−bed reaction were only studied with CO2. A model description for a fixed−bed batch reactor was applied, modified, and compared to experimental fixed−bed batch reactor results. This study concludes that determining the appro... [more]

Pawel Witczak, Michal Swiatkowski
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electromagnetic forces, finite elements, fluid vibration, power transformer, structural vibration
This article presents a step-by-step methodology for calculating transformer tank vibrations caused by electromagnetic forces. This approach uses 3D finite element models for both magnetic and structural calculations. Particular attention was paid to the description of momentum transfer between structural and fluid areas of the transformer. The actual geometry of the coils in the phase windings was taken into account. The dominant role of the axial component of the Lorentz force is the main conclusion of the article. The results are given in the form of three-dimensional displacement fields of the transformer tank presented together with the acoustic pressure field in the oil. The theoretical analysis is verified by laser-scanned vibration patterns on the tank wall.

April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 1D/0D model, emissions, lean combustion, performance, pre-chamber geometry
This paper presented an experimental and numerical study of pre-chamber volume, number of orifices and orifice diameter influence on engine performance and emissions. All the measurements were performed on a single cylinder test engine at fixed engine speed of 1600 rpm, while engine load was varied by a change of the excess air ratio in the main chamber from a stochiometric mixture to a lean limit. The total of nine pre-chamber variants comprised three different pre-chamber volumes, two orifice number combinations (six and four orifices) and nine different orifice diameters. It was observed that the pre-chamber volume affects the indicated efficiency in a trend which is mostly independent of excess air ratio, with the efficiency gain between the best and worst results ranging from 1 to 4.4%. While keeping the same pre-chamber volume and the total cross-sectional area of the orifices, the larger number of orifices show better performance on two out of three investigated pre-chamber volu... April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: contingency analysis, intentional attacks in transmission system, optimal power flow, optimal transmission switching, power electrical network security
Currently, operating electrical power systems (EPS) is a complex task that relies on the experience of the operators or the strength of algorithms developed for autonomous operation. The continuous operation of EPS is vulnerable to intentional cybernetic and physical attacks. With the most significant extension and distribution in the EPS, the transmission lines are most exposed to potential attacks. Before this, the entire behavior of the EPS changes, and, on occasions, a blackout can even be generated. The present investigation focused on developing a methodology for reconfiguring the power system against intentional attacks, considering the topology change through optimal switching of transmission lines (OTS) based on optimal DC flows and quantifying the contingency index, which allows for the identification of the weaknesses of the EPS. The methodology was applied to the IEEE 30−bus system, and contingencies were randomly generated, as is typical with intentional attacks. The study... [more]

April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Absorption, fractal dimension, ion diffusion, pore throat, tight sandstones
The degree of salinity in the hydraulic fracturing rejection fluid of the Shaximiao reservoir in the central Sichuan Basin is high, and the underlying mechanism causing this salinity is not clearly understood. We evaluated the rock structure of tight sandstone, including rock composition, pore structure, ion diffusion, and adsorption behavior, to determine how the rock structure influences the mechanism of the sandstone’s interaction with the fracturing fluid. X-ray diffraction revealed that the rock mineral fraction has a significant clay mineral concentration. The results of linear swelling experiments revealed that the water sensitivity of tight sandstone reservoirs exhibits moderately robust characteristics. The time required for salt ion diffusion stabilization is much longer than that required for self-imbibition stabilization, and the diffusion of salt ions is almost log-linear with time after imbibition stabilization. The diffusion rates of salt ions were determined for differe... [more]
Diesel Spray Liquid Length Imaging at High Pressure

April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Diesel spray, liquid core, shadowgraph
Engine efficiency and emissions depend on the fuel atomization and dispersion. The fuel atomization and dispersion depend heavily on the ambient pressure and temperature. In this work, to study Diesel sprays in engine conditions, an electrically heated, constant-volume, pressurized vessel was designed and manufactured. The controlling electronics and software were developed and tested to ensure safe and precise operation. A commercial Bosch six-hole automotive Diesel injector was used. The spray spatial and temporal development were studied. In the literature, spray liquid length and cone angle are extensively used to quantify fuel dispersion. In this work, these parameters were quantified using a high-speed shadowgraph technique. Models were derived to describe the temporal evolution of the liquid core. Such models can be used to predict the Diesel spray behaviour and the engine performance.

Keywords: flame quenching, hydrocarbon emissions, thermal swing, YSZ
Future vehicle powertrain systems with internal combustion engines must achieve higher efficiencies and further reduced pollutant emissions. This will require the application of new advanced technologies. Against this background, this paper presents a holistic approach to reduce temporally the wall heat losses, and hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions with thermal coatings on the combustion chamber walls. For this purpose, an yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) coating is applied and evaluated by different methods. The thin layer in combination with the low thermal effusivity of the material allows the wall temperature to follow the gas temperature and perform a so-called thermal swing. The interaction between an uncoated and a YSZ-coated wall with the flame front as well as partially burned gas was investigated. First, in terms of the coating’s potential to reduce the flame quenching distance using an optical method in a constant volume combustion chamber. Second, regarding its infl... [more]
Optimization of Fracturing Parameters by Modified Genetic Algorithm in Shale Gas Reservoir
Xin Zhou, Qiquan Ran
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fracturing parameter optimization, production prediction, SGA, shale gas fracturing horizontal well, XGBoost
Shale gas reservoirs have extremely low porosity and permeability, making them challenging to exploit. The best method for increasing recovery in shale gas reservoirs is horizontal well fracturing technology. Hence, fracturing parameter optimization is necessary to enhance shale gas horizontal fracturing well production. Traditional optimization methods, however, cannot meet the requirements for overall optimization of fracturing parameters. As for intelligent optimization algorithms, most have excellent global search capability but incur high computation costs, which limits their usefulness in real-world engineering applications. Thus, a modified genetic algorithm combined based on the Spearman correlation coefficient (SGA) is proposed to achieve the rapid optimization of fracturing parameters. SGA determines the crossover and mutation rates by calculating the Spearman correlation coefficient instead of randomly determining the rates like GA does, so that it could quickly converge to... April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: capture, CCUS, storage, transport, utilization
The problem of global warming and climate change has attracted global attention, and reducing the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere is an important step towards solving the problem. This paper mainly introduces the current development status, research hotspots, challenges and some emerging technologies of carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS). Among CO2 capture technologies, solvent absorption technology is currently the most mature and widely used technology, among which ionic liquid technology has great application prospects because its molecular structure can be designed and different functional groups can be connected. The surface functionalization of metal−organic frameworks in the adsorption method endows them with excellent CO2 adsorption capacity. In CO2 transportation, temperature and pressure must be considered in pipeline transportation, because they will affect the phase state of CO2 transportation. The impact of impurities on CO2 pipeline transportation is a... [more]

Keywords: battery lifetime, decentralized control, droop control, hybrid energy storage system, MPPT algorithms, supercapacitor
Employment of a battery energy storage system to compensate for the generation-consumption mismatch is a vital element for a resilient microgrid. However, the frequent (i.e., short-term) cyclic activity and the abrupt current variations (i.e., high di/dt) have adverse effects on the energy-type battery’s lifespan. On the other hand, the power-type supercapacitor energy storage system (SCES) has almost zero lifetime degradation when it is subjected to irregular charging/discharging patterns. Therefore, the hybridization between them can reduce battery stress levels. This study proposes a droop control algorithm with multiple segments for a SCES/battery hybrid energy storage system (HESS) that is employed in a solar/wind DC microgrid. The presented control scheme is decentralized since it avoids the central controller (CC) and the communication links between the controllers of SCES and battery units. To eliminate the short-term cyclic operation of the battery, the SCES regulates the bus... [more]

Keywords: frequency containment reserve, structural loading, wind energy, wind turbine control, wind turbine main bearing
The components of an operational wind turbine are continuously impacted by both static and dynamic loads. Regular inspections and maintenance are required to keep these components healthy. The main bearing of a wind turbine is one such component that experiences heavy loading forces during operation. These forces depend on various parameters such as wind speed, operating regime and control actions. When a wind turbine provides frequency containment reserve (FCR) to support the grid frequency, the forces acting upon the main bearing are also expected to exhibit more dynamic variations. These forces have a direct impact on the lifetime of the main bearing. With an increasing trend of wind turbines participating in the frequency ancillary services market, an analysis of these dynamic forces becomes necessary. To this end, this paper assesses the effect of FCR-based control on the main bearing lifetime of the wind turbine. Firstly, a control algorithm is implemented such that the output po... [more]

The ferrocyanide-based organic redox flow battery (ferrocyanide-based ORFB), based on electrochemistry, has become a potential energy storage technology due to its low price, eco-friendliness, safety, and convenience. However, its low efficiency and poor mass transfer performance hinder the application of the ORFB. The influence of the electrode shape (trapezoid, sector, and rectangle) on the mass transfer and battery performance are studied based on a numerical model, which is verified by the experiments. The results show that battery performance of the trapezoid electrode is better than that of the sector and rectangle electrode. The discharge voltage of the rectangle battery is the lowest, and the discharge voltage of the trapezoid battery is the highest. The discharge voltage of the rectangle battery is 4.47% lower than that of the trapezoid battery. The uniformity factor value of the trapezoid battery is 26.9% higher than that of the rectangle battery. The trapezoid shape is the b... [more]
Cooling of Concentrated Photovoltaic Cells—A Review and the Perspective of Pulsating Flow Cooling

April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: concentrated solar cell, CPV cooling mechanism, electrical and thermal efficiency, heat transfer enhancement, high heat flux dissipation, solar energy
This article presents a review to provide up-to-date research findings on concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) cooling, explore the key challenges and opportunities, and discuss the limitations. In addition, it provides a vision of a possible future trend and a glimpse of a promising novel approach to CPV cooling based on pulsating flow, in contrast to existing cooling methods. Non-concentrated photovoltaics (PV) have modest efficiency of up to around 20% because they utilise only a narrow spectrum of solar irradiation for electricity conversion. Therefore, recent advances employed multi-junction PV or CPV to widen the irradiation spectrum for conversion. CPV systems concentrate solar irradiation on the cell’s surface, producing high solar flux and temperature. The efficient cooling of CPV cells is critical to avoid thermal degradation and ensure optimal performance. Studies have shown that pulsating flow can enhance heat transfer in various engineering applications. The advantage of pulsat... [more]

Keywords: flash boiling spray, high-pressure injection, liquid ammonia, NH3, zero-carbon fuel
Liquid ammonia is an ideal zero-carbon fuel for internal combustion engines. High-pressure injection is a key technology in organizing ammonia combustion. Characteristics of high-pressure liquid ammonia injection is lack of research. Spray behaviors are likely to change when a high-pressure diesel injector uses liquid ammonia as its fuel. This study uses high-speed imaging with a DBI method to investigate the liquid penetration, width, and spray tip velocity of high-pressure liquid ammonia injection up to 100 MPa. Non-flash and flash boiling conditions were included in the experimental conditions. Simulation was also used to evaluate the results. In non-flash boiling conditions, the Hiroyasu model provided better accuracy than the Siebers model. In flash boiling conditions, a phenomenon was found that liquid penetration and spray tip velocity were strongly suppressed in the initial stage of the injection process, this being the “spray resistance phenomenon”. The “spray resistance pheno... [more]

Keywords: criterion method, electric power system, instability of generation, renewable energy sources, reserve means, similarity theory
This paper presents a method for refining the forecast schedule of renewable energy sources (RES) generation by its intraday adjustment and investigates the measures for reserving RES with unstable generation in electric power systems (EPSs). Owing to the dependence of electricity generation by solar and wind power plants (PV and WPPs, respectively) on natural conditions, problems arise with their contribution to the process of balancing the power system. Therefore, the EPS is obliged to keep a power reserve to compensate for deviations in RES from the planned generation amount. A system-wide reserve (mainly the shunting capacity of thermal and hydroelectric power plants) is used first, followed by other means of power reserve: electrochemical, hydrogen, or biogas plants. To analyze the technical and economic efficiency of certain backup means, mathematical models based on the theory of similarity and the criterion method were developed. This method is preferred because it provides the... [more]
