Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: alternative fuel, biodiesel, diesel engine, emissions, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, waste cooking oil
As non-renewable conventional fossil fuel sources are depleting day by day, researchers are continually finding new ways of producing and utilizing alternative, renewable, and reliable fuels. Due to conventional technologies, the environment has been degraded seriously, which profoundly impacts life on earth. To reduce the emissions caused by running the compression ignition engines, waste cooking oil (WCO) biodiesel is one of the best alternative fuels locally available in all parts of the world. Different study results are reviewed with a clear focus on combustion, performance, and emission characteristics, and the impact on engine durability. Moreover, the environmental and economic impacts are also reviewed in this study. When determining the combustion characteristics of WCO biodiesel, the cylinder peak pressure value increases and the heat release rate and ignition delay period decreases. In performance characteristics, brake-specific fuel consumption increases while brake-specif... [more]

Co-Digestion of Rice Straw with Cow Manure in an Innovative Temperature Phased Anaerobic Digestion Technology: Performance Evaluation and Trace Elements
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, cow manure, methane, nutrients, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, rice straw, temperature, trace elements
Rice straw is an agricultural residue produced in abundant quantities. Open burning and plowing back the straw to the fields are common practices for its disposal. In-situ incorporation and burning cause emissions of greenhouse gas and particulate matter. Additionally, the energy potential of rice straw is lost. Anaerobic digestion is a technology that can be potentially used to utilize the surplus rice straw, provide renewable energy, circulate nutrients available in the digestate, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from rice paddies. An innovative temperature phased anaerobic digestion technology was developed and carried out in a continuous circulating mode of mesophilic and hyperthermophilic conditions in a loop digester (F1). The performance of the newly developed digester was compared with the reference digester (F2) working at mesophilic conditions. Co-digestion of rice straw was carried out with cow manure to optimize the carbon to nitrogen ratio and to provide the essential t... [more]

Grid Services and Stress Reduction with a Flywheel in the Rotor of a Wind Turbine
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flywheel, grid frequency, grid service, inertia, low voltage ride through, mechanical stress, power system stabilizer, variable inertia, vibration, wind turbine
Wind power penetration increases in most grids and the sizes of wind turbines increase. This leads to increasingly tough requirements, which are imposed on wind turbines, both from the grid as well as from economics. Some of these partially contradictory requirements can only be satisfied with additional control mechanisms in the wind turbines. In this paper, such a mechanism, i.e., a hydraulic−pneumatic flywheel system in the rotor of a wind turbine, is discussed. This flywheel system supports a wind turbine in providing grid services such as steadying the power infeed, fast frequency response, continuous inertia provision, power system stabilization, and low voltage ride-through. In addition, it can help mitigate the stress on the mechanical structure of a wind turbine, which results from varying operating points, imbalances in the rotor, gravitation that acts on the blades, in-plane vibrations, and emergency braking. The study presented in this paper is based on simulations of a pub... [more]

Gasification of Psidium guajava L. Waste Using Supercritical Water: Evaluation of Feed Ratio and Moderate Temperatures
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biomass waste, gasification, Psidium guajava L., supercritical, Water
Biomass waste, as raw material for renewable energy, is an attractive alternative since it does not compete with human food supply. An emerging alternative for its treatment is supercritical water gasification (SCWG), due to the high moisture content of some types of biomass. On this regards, guava fruit (Psidium guajava L.) is one of the most wasted agro-food products in Mexico. This motivated us to evaluate gasification of guava waste on dry biomass base under supercritical water conditions for the first time, with the aim of analyzing the impact of moderate temperatures and feed ratios as reaction parameters on gas products. Temperature was varied in the range of 673.15−773.15 K and using a batch reactor loaded with biomass:water (B:W) mass ratios of 1:1, 1:4, and 1:6. Furthermore, the obtained solid, liquid, and gas phase products were characterized. Hydrogen (H2), carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH4), ethane (C2H6), propane (C3H8), and butane (C4H10) were... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electric vehicle, energy harvesting, linear electromagnetic generator, maximum power point tracking, power converter
This paper investigates an energy-harvesting system that uses of vibration energy at a shock absorber for electric vehicles. This system mainly comprises a linear electromagnetic generator and synchronous buck converter. To obtain the electrical energy through a linear electromagnetic generator, the perturb and observe maximum power point tracking (P&O MPPT) scheme is applied at the converter. The power converter circuit is designed with a diode rectifier and synchronous buck converter. The generated electric power is able to transmit to the battery and the damping force of the shock absorber is adjusted by the controlled current of generator. The linear electromagnetic generator was designed as a single phase eight-slot eight-pole tubular permanent magnet machine. The performance of the proposed energy-harvesting system was verified through simulations and experiments.

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: building-integrated photovoltaic system, buildings, integrated façades, nZEB, water storage
Buildings play an active role in the global energy consumption and are required to not only minimize their energy use, but also generate energy in a sustainable manner. The integration of renewable energies in building elements can improve their overall performance, as they are able to replace common construction materials, while offering both electrical and thermal energy. The scope of this paper is to present the first results of an experimental study of a Building-Integrated Photovoltaic system combined with a water storage tank (BIPV-WS), a combined integration not extensively studied yet. Both layers are separated by a ventilated air cavity, and the thermal behavior of the system was analyzed experimentally in real functioning conditions. The water tank performs as a thermal storage, maintaining a regular temperature of about 20−30 °C during a typical winter day of Lisbon for a period of 11 h. Moreover, through the ventilation of the air cavity, the heat provided by the solar pane... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ANOVA, DoE, electrolysis, nanobubble
(1) The generation of nanobubbles by electrolysis is an interesting method of using electrical energy to form bubble nuclei, effectively creating a multiphase system. For every process, the effectiveness of nanobubble generation by electrolysis depends on various process parameters that impact should be determined. (2) In this work, the electrolytic generation of hydrogen and oxygen bubbles was performed in a self-built setup, in which a Nafion membrane separated two chambers. The generation of bubbles of both gases was investigated using Box−Behnken experimental design. Three independent variables were salt concentration, current density, and electrolysis time, while the dependent variables were Sauter diameters of generated bubbles. An ANOVA analysis and multivariate regression were carried out to propose a statistical and power model of nanobubble size as a process parameter function. Practical Aspects of Cylinder Deactivation and Reactivation
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: control strategy, cylinder deactivation, engine control, experimental analysis, gas spring operation, mode switching, skip-firing
Cylinder deactivation is an effective measure to reduce the fuel consumption of internal combustion engines. This paper deals with several practical aspects of switching from conventional operation to operation with deactivated cylinders, i.e., gas spring operation with closed intake and exhaust valves. The focus of this paper lies on one particular quantity-controlled stoichiometrically-operated engine where the load is controlled using the valve timing. Nevertheless, the main results are transferable to other engines and engine types, including quality-controlled engines. The first aspect of this paper is an analysis of the transition from fired to gas spring operation, and vice versa, as well as the gas spring operation itself. This is essential for mode changes, such as cylinder deactivation or skip-firing operation. Simulation results show that optimizing the valve timing in the last cycle before deactivating/first cycle after reactivating a cylinder, respectively, is advantageous... [more]

Global Energy Production Computation of a Solar-Powered Smart Home Automation System Using Reliability-Oriented Metrics
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fault coverage, global energy production, hybrid testing, smart home automation system, solar reliability factor, solar tracker
This paper presents a modified global energy production computation formula that replaces the traditional Performance Ratio (PR) with a novel Solar Reliability Factor (SRF) for mobile solar tracking systems. The SRF parameter describes the reliability and availability of a dual-axis solar tracker, which powers a smart home automation system entirely by using clean energy. By applying the SRF in the global energy production formula of solar tracking systems, we can predict the energy generation in real time, allowing proper energy management of the entire smart home automation system. Regarding static deployed Photovoltaic (PV) systems, the PR factor is preserved to compute the power generation of these devices accurately. Experimental results show that the energy production computation constantly fluctuates over several days due to the SRF parameter variation, showing a 26.11% reduction when the dual-axis solar tracker’s availability is affected by system errors and maximum power gener... Pyrolysis Characteristics of Undervalued Wood Varieties in the Portuguese Charcoal Sector
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biomass, carbonization, charcoal, pyrolysis, woody residues
Charcoal production in Portugal is mostly based on the valorization of woody residues from cork oak and holm oak, the latter being considered a reference feedstock in the market. Nevertheless, since wildfire prevention became a priority in Portugal, after the recent dramatic wildfires, urgent actions are being conducted to reduce the fuel load in the forests, which is increasing the amount of biomass that is available for valorization. Additionally, biomass residues from agriculture, forest management, control of invasive species, partially burnt wood from post-fire recovery actions, and waste wood from storm devastated forests need also to be considered within the national biomass valorization policies. This has motivated the present work on whether the carbonization process can be used to valorize alternative woody biomasses not currently used on a large scale. For this purpose, slow pyrolysis experiments were carried out with ten types of wood, using a fixed bed reactor allowing the... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coal mine, distance measuring, indoor locating system, roadheader, RTLS, ultrasonic transducers
Determining the location of objects, for example roadheader in a hard coal mine, is a task that should be automated in the conditions of state-of-the-art mining. Current solutions do not meet the user’s expectations due to the lack of the possibility of automation, maladjustment to the environment of a hard coal mine or not meeting the legal requirements. The article describes the initial stage of work on an automatic system for determining the position of machines in difficult underground conditions, including the analysis of requirements and constraints, an overview of available solutions, technologies and algorithms, as a result of which devices were selected for further tests. To determine the location, it is necessary to take distance measurements with high accuracy, despite the disturbances resulting from the working environment. Combustion Modes and Unsteady Characteristics during the Condition Transition of a Scramjet Combustor
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: blowout, condition transition, flame oscillation, flame stabilization, unsteady combustion
To investigate the combustion modes and unsteady characteristics during the condition transition of a scramjet combustor, a series of experiments were carried out under the condition of Mach 2.52 supersonic incoming flow, the corresponding stagnation pressure and temperature of which were 1.6 MPa and 1486 K, respectively. A fuel supply system that could dynamically adjust the injection pressure was adopted to simulate the condition transition stage of a scramjet. Based on the advanced combustion diagnosis technique, the transient chemiluminescence image and the wall pressure were recorded during the whole combustion process. Three typical modes of turbulent combustion occurred when the injection pressure drop gradually increased. The jet flame was stable after the condition transition when the injection pressure drop was relatively low. An unstable combustion phenomenon accompanied by intermittent local extinction and reignition could be found near the blowout limits. With a further in... [more]

A Modification of the Perturb and Observe Method to Improve the Energy Harvesting of PV Systems under Partial Shading Conditions
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: maximum power point tracking algorithm, partial shading, photovoltaic systems
There are multiples conditions that lead to partial shading conditions (PSC) in photovoltaic systems (PV). Under these conditions, the harvested energy decreases in the PV system. The maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller aims to harvest the greatest amount of energy even under partial shading conditions. The simplest available MPPT algorithms fail on PSC, whereas the complex ones are effective but require high computational resources and experience in this type of systems. This paper presents a new MPPT algorithm that is simple but effective in tracking the global maximum power point even in PSC. The simulation and experimental results show excellent performance of the proposed algorithm. Additionally, a comparison with a previously proposed algorithm is presented. The comparison shows that the proposal in this paper is faster in tracking the maximum power point than complex algorithms.

Image Preprocessing for Outdoor Luminescence Inspection of Large Photovoltaic Parks
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: camera calibration, EL image processing, electroluminescence imaging, lens distortion, pattern detection, PV modules
Electroluminescence (EL) measurements allow one to detect damages and/or defective parts in photovoltaic systems. In principle, it seems possible to predict the complete current/voltage curve from such pictures even automatically. However, such a precise analysis requires image corrections and calibrations, because vignetting and lens distortion cause signal and spatial distortions. Earlier works on crystalline silicon modules used the cell gap joints (CGJ) as calibration pattern. Unfortunately, this procedure fails if the detection of the gaps is not accurate or if the contrast in the images is low. Here, we enhance the automated camera calibration algorithm with a reliable pattern detection and analyze quantitatively the quality of the process. Our method uses an iterative Hough transform to detect line structures and uses three key figures (KF) to separate detected busbars from cell gaps. This method allows a reliable identification of all cell gaps, even in noisy images or if disco... [more]

Design of All-Small-Molecule Organic Solar Cells Approaching 14% Efficiency via Isometric Terminal Alkyl Chain Engineering
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: alkyl chains, morphology, organic solar cell, small-molecule donor
Morphology is crucial to determining the photovoltaic performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). However, manipulating morphology involving only small-molecule donors and acceptors is extremely challenging. Herein, a simple terminal alkyl chain engineering process is introduced to fine-tune the morphology towards high-performance all-small-molecule (ASM) OSCs. We successfully chose a chlorinated two-dimension benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene (BDT) central unit and two isomeric alkyl cyanoacetate as the end-capped moieties to conveniently synthesize two isomeric small-molecule donors, namely, BT-RO-Cl and BT-REH-Cl, each bearing linear n-octyl (O) as the terminal alkyl chain and another branched 2-ethylhexyl (EH) as the terminal alkyl chain. The terminal alkyl chain engineering process provided BT-RO-Cl with 13.35% efficiency and BT-REH-Cl with 13.90% efficiency ASM OSCs, both with Y6 as the electron acceptor. The successful performance resulted from uniform phase separation and the favor... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air-cooled, aviation, multiphase, PEMFC, specific power, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)
One of the marketing challenges of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for various applications is enhancing flight durability. Due to the superior characteristics of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), they have the potential to reach a longer flight time and higher payload. In this regard, a numerical assessment of a UAV air-cooled PEMFC is carried out using a three-dimensional (3-D), multiphase, and non-isothermal model on three flow fields, i.e., unblocked bean-shaped, blocked bean-shaped, and parallel. Then, the results of single-cell modeling are generalized to the PEMFC stack to provide the power of 2.5 kW for a UAV. The obtained results indicate that the strategy of rising air stoichiometry for cooling performs well in the unblocked bean-shaped design, and the maximum temperature along the channel length reaches 331.5 K at the air stoichiometric of 30. Further, it is found that the best performance of a 2.5 kW PEMFC stack is attained by the bean-shaped design without bloc... [more]

A Spectral Model of Grid Frequency for Assessing the Impact of Inertia Response on Wind Turbine Dynamics
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: grid frequency, inertia response, rate of change in frequency, spectral model, wind turbine
The recent developments in renewable energy have led to a higher proportion of converter-connected power generation sources in the grid. Operating a high renewable energy penetration power system and ensuring the frequency stability could be challenging due to the reduced system inertia, which is usually provided by the conventional synchronous generators. Previous studies have shown the potential of wind turbines to provide an inertia response to the grid based on the measured rate of change of the grid frequency. This is achieved by controlling the kinetic energy extraction from the rotating parts by its converters. In this paper, we derive a spectral-based model of the grid frequency by analyzing historical measurements. The spectral model is then used to generate realistic, generic, and stochastic signals of the grid frequency for typical aero-elastic simulations of wind turbines. The spectral model enables the direct assessment of the additional impact of the inertia response cont... [more]

Keywords: Batteries, life-cycle cost, optimal sizing, photovoltaic water pumping, storage technologies, system architectures
Photovoltaic water pumping systems (PVWPS) are a promising solution to improve domestic water access in low-income rural areas. It is challenging, however, to make them more affordable for the local communities. We develop here a comparative methodology to assess relevant features of both widely employed PVWPS architecture with water tank storage, and hardly used PVWPS architecture with a battery bank instead of tank storage. The quantitative comparison is carried out through techno-economic optimization, with the goal of minimizing the life cycle cost of PVWPS with constraints on the satisfaction of the water demand of local inhabitants and on the groundwater resource sustainability. It is aimed to support decision-makers in selecting most appropriate storage for domestic water supply projects. We applied the methodology in the rural village of Gogma, Burkina Faso. Results indicate that the life-cycle cost of an optimized PVWPS with batteries is $24.1k while it is $31.1k if a tank is... [more]

Keywords: decline curve analysis (DCA), economic performance shale gas, ellipsoidal hydrofractures, geometry effective propped volume (EPV), shale gas 3D production model
We analyze the effect that the geometry of the Effective Propped Volume (EPV) has on the economic performance of hydrofractured multistage shale gas wells. We study the sensitivity of gas production to the EPV’s geometry and we compare it with the sensitivity to other parameters whose relevance in the production of shale gas is well known: porosity, kerogen content and permeability induced in the Stimulated Recovery Volume (SRV). To understand these sensitivities, we develop a high-fidelity 3D numerical model of shale gas flow that allows determining both the Estimated Ultimate Recovery (EUR) of gas as well as analyzing the decline curves of gas production (DCA). We find that the geometry of the EPV plays an important role in the economic performance and gas production of shale wells. The relative contribution of EPV geometry is comparable to that of induced permeability of the SRV or formation porosity. A Methodology for Estimating the Position of the Engineering Bedrock for Offshore Wind Farm Seismic Demand in Taiwan
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ground model, offshore wind farm, seismic demand
Taiwan lies in the circum-Pacific earthquake zone. The seabed soil of offshore wind farms in Taiwan is mainly composed of loose silty sand and soft, low-plasticity clay. The seismic demand for offshore wind turbines has been given by the local code. Ground-motion analysis is required to consider the site effects of the soil liquefaction potential evaluation and the foundation design of offshore wind turbines. However, the depth of the engineering bedrock for ground motion analysis is not presented in the local code. In this study, we develop a three-dimensional ground model of an offshore wind farm in the Changhua area, through use of collected in situ borehole and PS (P wave (compression) and S (shear) wave velocities) logging test data. The engineering bedrock is the sediment at the depth where the average shear wave velocity of soil within 30 m, Vsd30, is larger than 360 m/s. Impact on Current-Interrupting Characteristic by Parameter Settings of Superconducting Hybrid DC Circuit Breaker
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: parameter settings, quench characteristic, step-changing case method, superconducting hybrid DC circuit breaker
DC faults cause severe disruption in not only the DC system but also the AC system because the fault current is very large and rapidly increases. The DC circuit breaker used to separate the DC faults from the power system is still being researched, but it is very expensive due to the use of multiple power semiconductors to interrupt a large fault current in a short time. However, if the quench characteristic of a superconductor is used, the amplitude of fault current can be reduced. Therefore, it is possible to effectively interrupt a large fault current even if a relatively cheap mechanically passive DC circuit breaker is used. In the current study, a superconducting hybrid DC circuit breaker is proposed, and the limiting characteristics of each element are analyzed. By using two superconducting elements, the quench occurs sequentially twice according to the magnitude of the fault current, and the current-limiting reactor and resistance are used. If a current-limiting reactor is used... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide Capture, CFB boiler, DR-VPSA, flue gas, SO2/NOx removal
The problem of reducing carbon dioxide emissions from flue gas, particularly from flue gas originating from coal-firing CFB systems, is currently an important challenge. Many centers around the world have tested post-combustion CO2 capture systems. One of these systems, operated using DR-VPSA adsorption technology (dual-reflux vacuum pressure swing adsorption), was tested under the Strategic Project in Poland. The flue gas in this study originated from a supercritical CFB boiler (460 MWe). An important problem involved in capturing CO2 from flue gas is the occurrence of SO2 and NOx. These substances have a negative effect on the CO2 adsorption process. In this study, commercial impregnated activated carbon was used to remove SO2 and NOx from CFB flue gas in the pre-treatment section during the tests of a pilot CO2 capture unit in a large-scale CFB boiler at the Lagisza Power Plant (Poland).
